The Hamas-linked terror organization known as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) will trumpet this as a victory for “Islamophobia,” and fundraise off it. But it is actually a victory for common sense, as explained here.
“Duke Cancels Plan for Muslim Call to Prayer From Tower,” by Jonathan Drew, Associated Press, January 15, 2015:
Duke University has canceled its plan to use the tower of its chapel for a weekly, amplified call to prayer for Muslims.
In a release Thursday, the university said Muslims will instead gather on the quadrangle before heading into a room in the chapel for their weekly prayer service.
“Duke remains committed to fostering an inclusive, tolerant and welcoming campus for all of its students,” said Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations. “However, it was clear that what was conceived as an effort to unify was not having the intended effect.”
Under the canceled plan, members of the school’s Muslim Students Association would have recited the call lasting about three minutes from the bell tower. However, the plan drew the ire of evangelist Franklin Graham, the son of the Rev. Billy Graham, who urged Duke alumni to withhold support because of violence against Christians that he attributed to Muslims. He wrote on Facebook that the decision is playing out as “Christianity is being excluded from the public square.”
The chapel is identified by the school as a Christian church but also hosts Hindu services and has been used for Buddhist meditations.
The chapel’s associate dean for religious life, Christy Lohr Sapp, said before the plans were canceled that the move showed the school’s commitment to religious pluralism. In a column written for the News and Observer in Raleigh, Lohr Sapp acknowledged the headlines generated by violence by extremists in ISIS, Boko Haram and al-Qaida, contrasting it to what’s happening on campus….
mortimer says
There are limits to which a consecrated Christian church may extend their sanctuary space. Nothing which substantially conflicts with Christian ethics should take place in a Christian holy place…for instance…IDOLATRY.
The worshipping of Islam’s black stone (actually several stones) is frankly the worshipping of an idol which the 2nd Commandment forbids. Islamic prayer is not then lawful in a Christian church.
mortimer says
FALSE ADVERTISING IN ISLAMIC CALL TO PRAYER
After 1400 years of evidence it is concluded that the Islamic call to prayer is false advertising. It says, ‘Come to success, come to success’, but all Islamic countries are dysfunctional, un-free, misogynistic and backward.
Islam is a call to FAILURE! The Islamic call to prayer should therefore be prohibited. It is false advertising.
R Cole says
Don’t forget it is a very seductive false advertisement – it not only calls its followers to success by practicing the daily rituals [to a fault] – it tells men they will be made more intelligent.
And that while the rest of humanity is ‘ignorant’ those in Islam are not… [Think: Wizard of Oz {…you already have a brain}]
But what has it all boiled down to in 1400 yrs – if you separate the humanity from the religious practice and the actions within the religion – for say Iran – you get ‘death to America’ – ‘Allah Akbar – Kill the Infidel – Convert or Die!!’ And the big question to ponder with your higher Islamic intelligence is – ‘Should apostates from Islam be put to death?’
But the feeling that you will be made superior over others by joining – is one of the most attractive things about the religion – this is where even [non-practising] moderates will come out ferociously against any challenge to the faith – because the heart of the teachings of Islam is based on the promotion of supremacy – over all men. Islam as the guiding example!!
We have freedom of religion – freedom of belief – if you wish to believe your belief endows you with a special supremacy – according to our fundamental beliefs – you can believe as you wish – but when you start to use violence and trickery – to foist those views onto others – then what we are dealing with is thuggery.

The MSA – is designated a terrorists organisation by the UAE – and Duke University would do well to wonder why that is?
Kepha says
The worship of Hindu gods or Buddhist Bodhisattva. are also idolatry. Some of us would include as well the crucifix or Sallman’s purported +Head of Christ_ or other similar attempts to portray the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. However, I suppose that the denominational sponsors of Duke University are not as precisian as Uncle Kepha.
jihad3tracker says
To Mortimer and Kepha and others mentioning the Rev. Dr. Billy Graham and his son Franklin (commenting below) :
As an American in his mid-60s, my bet for why the Muslim azan got canceled ?? Someone from the Graham ministry found out about it.
North Carolina and Billy Graham are deeply linked in respected heritage and tireless evangelism. For literally decades, the “Come to Christ” work of Dr. Graham was worldwide. He was a “star” of the faith.
The dean and chaplaincy of Duke University just could not ignore a warning of truth from Franklin Graham about what it was stepping into. Count this one in our victories . . .
Kepha says
jihad3tracker, maybe you’re right. I see you’re a little older than I am. However, I’m a little surprised that Duke would be so sensitive to what the Graham ministry has to say.
Jacksonl03 says
The alternative to this sort of mess is a policy of not accommodating any religion in an otherwise academic setting. Sounds damn good to me.
Bill says
A better alternative is realizing that CHRISTIANS founded America and CHRISTIANS wrote the First Amendment and the Constitution and that PROTESTANT CHRISTIANITY is especially responsible, complicit and collaborative with tolerance, self government, separation of powers, individual rights, separation of church and state (not antagonism toward religion by the state) and tolerance. Also it would be helpful if you recognized the ISLAM IS A TOXIC POLITICAL IDEOLOGY THAT IS INHERENTLY AND THOROUGHLY ABUSIVE, AUTHORITARIAN, MYSOGONYSTIC, INTOLERANT, VIOLENT, SUPREMACIST, TOTALITARIAN, CLEPTOCRATIC AND SEXUALLY PERVERSE.
Cunamarra says
Excellent and honest response Bill. To not accept Christianity is one thing, to not appreciate and acknowledge Judaeo-Christianity’s overwhelmingly positive influence upon civilized culture, history and law is indicative of intellectual and moral perversity.
Oliver says
And IF NOT FOR A JEW, CHAIM SOLOMON, WHO (went bankrupt and died in debtors prison doing so) finanvcing the Revolution by giving supplies (food, ammunition, etc) to G. washington’s army (on credit and never paid for-hence why he went bankrupt), Washington would most likley have lost to the Hessians. (Most –if not almsot all- “British” soldiers were Hessians; most of the officers, however, were British).
But, rather then chapels (I went to a Catholic/Jesuit University, so no issue, was a Catholic chapel) why not just have rooms, that can be used for religious or sevcular meetings? Solves, in my view, any issues.
Jacksonl03 says
Okay. Neat. But all this can be covered in the history seminar. Doesn’t mean we have to accommodate religious services and the associated discord on campus does it.
Bill says
I don’t think you understand. America, the West, liberty, freedom, our classic liberal ideas are CHRISTIAN (especially Protestant, Puritan, Calvinist) in origin. If you relegate an ideology as hostile to our liberty, intolerant, authoritarian and supremacist as Islam to equality with Christianity you will capitulate to Islam. Also, you will not be able to win or even hold your own in the ideological war with Islam without the Christians. Protestant Christianity is the foundation of conservative Americanism. This is still a fact. Progressive, atheist, Democrat Party, RHINO politics will submit to Islam. Christians will fight.
Oliver says
Bill,
I am not saying that Christianity is (morally equivalent) to Islam. Nor the reverse. islam is evil.
I also do not see ALL ATHEISTS; DEMOCRATS AND RINOS AS BEING SUBMISSIVE. And as for Christians will fight. Like they have been doing in Iraq?
And the Founding Fathers were (mostly if not all) Deists, not practicing Christians.
wiederganger says
Agree with the comment about Islam.. However when it comes to Christianity, Protestantism in particular, and its historical advocacy of tolerance, ask any true-blooded irishman about oliver Cromwell and you just might hear a slightly different opinion..
Bill says
Let’s begin here: ALL CHRISTIAN SECTS HAVE MANY INSTANCES OF A VERY, VERY, bad record. That being said, it is indisputable that the U.S. was founded as a Protestant, Calvinist, Puritan nation and that those Protestants, in the context of history, were leaders in liberty. The writers of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were 99% Protestants with varying degrees of orthodoxy. Protestantism has traditionally been anti-monarchical, especially the Puritans and were anti-authoritarian, hated even the notion of infallibility, and stood for the rule of law and a separation of powers. Attack Protestant Christianity in our heritage and you will lose America.
Oliver says
Bill,
I learned that the majority of the Founding Fathers WERE DEISTS. They beleived in G-d but not religion.
mariam rove says
That is not an alternative. That is called surrendering to Muslim, Jihadists and stealth jihadists. I was born and raised a Muslim and the Islamic mentality is to take over. Dracula says
Ordinarily I’d agree with you, but Duke is a private institution founded by protestants. I expect them to promote religious events in the name of a particular religion and the fact that they still want to find ways to accommodate other religions is a gesture of magnanimity.
Oliver says
Dracula,
I thought hat Duke was founded (or the $$$ for it given) by the Duke Family, which made its money (primarily) from cigarettes. And not founded as a religious university. Was/am i incorrect?
Kepha says
So, Jackson, only the Evolutionary Materialists are allowed to call their traditions of discourse “education” or “academic”? They’ve got their own unproven axioms as well (called “dogma” when the other guy speaks). This sounds as fanatic, intolerant, and liberty-denying as any Taliban spokesman.
In the Western world, the whole idea of the university–a place where the whole realm of knowledge could be brought together and shared–was a Christian invention. It’s statements like yours, clearly absorbed from the morass of American public miseducation, that lead me to introduce myself not as a history teacher, but as a professional swindler of the young and their families.
Maybe you ought to go read Alasdair MacIntyre’s _Whose Justic? Which Rationality?_ It might awaken you from your axiomatic slumbers.

The question is, why must a church school or university which identifies with any Christian denomination, be made to allow worship inside its walls by people of other religions?
This is not the same as a restaurant which allows all races, ethnic groups, professionals, laborers, etc. to enter and eat. It isn’t the same as a doctor treating all races, ethnicities, professions, etc.
Religion is in a category all by itself. Kind of like a family, which doesn’t invite just anyone in the neighborhood to come in and eat and to be told the cook must prepare any and all dishes requested by strangers.

It’s a-l-l-a-h.
Our moon-god has no second name,
it’s A-L-L-A-H.
Oh we kill kafir most every-day,

As a couple of the comments in the original article stated, the Muslim call to prayer is an amplified declaration of the superiority of Allah over all others. For a Christian organization to invite this while fellow Christians are being murdered and harassed all over the world by Allah-worshipers is clearly insane.
By contrast a church bell goes ding dong. It does not proclaim domination or demand submission.
The Muslim call is loud, obnoxious and hectoring. Repeated 5x a day it is more of a Communist style attempt at brain washing than any sort of sacred melodic reminder
Greyhound Fancier says
Most beautiful sound in the world per our President.

It amazes me how stupid a university can be.
After three minutes of having to listen to Arabic babble over loudspeakers… do I then have to listen to three minutes of Latin babble, three minutes of Hindu babble, three minutes of Sioux worship, three minutes of Greek Orthodoxy, three minutes of Tibetan Buddhist chants, Australian Aboriginal didgeridoo, Norse screams to Odin, etc., etc.? How many religions are there in Duke? Even at 50, it could take half the day to get through all this noise.
Why can’t these people get an iPhone app or a $3 watch with an alarm? You mean to seriously tell me that people can’t get to prayers unless someone tells them over loudspeakers?
I can’t imagine a more blatant use of government or a university pushing a religion on someone than having them blast prayers over a loudspeaker for three minutes to tens of thousands of people… all on the lame excuse that you completely unable to figure out when to pray without this. Can folks just get their school work done in peace?
Debbie says
They’re still going to let the Muslim students “gather on the quadrangle” before heading in to pray. Why? Why is a public gathering necessary? Do Christians or Jews or any other group insist on public gatherings before they pray as a group? No. No they don’t. The Muslims will use this to intimidate, antagonize, and claim possession.

Right you are, Arafat. In fact, generally speaking, the more prestigious the American university the more it has become pc/mc stupid. Oh yeah, it’s the Sixties coming back to bite the American Republic in the butt big time. It’s telling and highly instructive that just about the most unfree places in all of America are where its colleges and universities are located. No wonder the Islamic world is pouring so much money into American higher education. After all, liberty and Islam have nothing in common. Increasingly neither do liberty and American higher education. So sad. A brutal reality however.

“Hundreds of alumni and donors threatened to withdraw financial support within hours of the announcement.”
People who support a Christian university in North Carolina are likely to already have an opinion on Islam, whether they read the Koran or not. They’ve associated Islam with violence against everyone and want nothing to do with it. I suspect their logic follows “If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat.” Sometimes the right answer is obvious.
I don’t see how we can have religious pluralism if we treat all the religions as if they are the same! It’s like owning a mongrel dog and claiming that it represents every breed. It’s a real problem within the United Methodist Church where it seems many pastors seem to believe that one’s choice of faith is arbitrary. The pastors at a local church here have rented out the parsonage to an imam. A business transaction, but does a church really want to rent to someone who preaches against it?

The Duke University decision to cancel the Islamic call for prayer wasn’t a triumph of common sense at all. It was a triumph of money. Duke could see that a decision to allow the Islamic call to prayer would cause the alumni endowment fund to dry right up. And that was all-important.

Reasonable religious accomodations make sense. However the request to broadcast the Islamic call to prayer throughout the campus would be extremely unreasonable for the University. Here is why:
1. It occur in mid afternoon on Friday which is a school day with on going classes.
2. It extends for a long time (3-5 minutes).
3. It is someone talking in a foreign language and it is very distracting. Hard to concentrate. Not like bells or music.
4. It is very frequent with the potential of being extended to 5 times a day because that is how many daily prayers are there in Islam.
Mike at the Beach says
I grow weary, too, of the constant “Christianity has its history of violence, too” line of thought. Stipulated! How about this, though- Western religions and philosophy left 99% of that in the dust bin of history hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Try to find a Blasphemy trial in the US in the past century (or ever). On the other hand, when was the last Muslim terror attack AT UNC…2006. As a religion and cultural schema, Islam is stuck in the 14th Century; some Muslim scholars are beginning to discuss the need for their own Reformation, which (with their history of openness and progressiveness) should only take another millennium or so to knock out.
