Speaking before Al-Azhar and the Awqaf Ministry on New Year’s Day, 2015, in connection to Prophet Muhammad’s upcoming birthday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a vocal supporter for a renewed vision of Islam, made what must be his most forceful and impassioned plea to date on the subject.
Among other things, Sisi said that the “corpus of [Islamic] texts and ideas that we have sacralized over the years” are “antagonizing the entire world”; that it is not “possible that 1.6 billion people [reference to the world’s Muslims] should want to kill the rest of the world’s inhabitants—that is 7 billion—so that they themselves may live”; and that Egypt (or the Islamic world in its entirety) “is being torn, it is being destroyed, it is being lost—and it is being lost by our own hands.”
The relevant excerpt from Sisi’s speech follows (translation by Michele Antaki):
I am referring here to the religious clerics. We have to think hard about what we are facing—and I have, in fact, addressed this topic a couple of times before. It’s inconceivable that the thinking that we hold most sacred should cause the entire umma[Islamic world] to be a source of anxiety, danger, killing and destruction for the rest of the world. Impossible!
That thinking—I am not saying “religion” but “thinking”—that corpus of texts and ideas that we have sacralized over the years, to the point that departing from them has become almost impossible, is antagonizing the entire world. It’s antagonizing the entire world!
Is it possible that 1.6 billion people [Muslims] should want to kill the rest of the world’s inhabitants—that is 7 billion—so that they themselves may live? Impossible!
I am saying these words here at Al Azhar, before this assembly of scholars and ulema—Allah Almighty be witness to your truth on Judgment Day concerning that which I’m talking about now.
All this that I am telling you, you cannot feel it if you remain trapped within this mindset. You need to step outside of yourselves to be able to observe it and reflect on it it from a more enlightened perspective.
I say and repeat again that we are in need of a religious revolution. You, imams, are responsible before Allah. The entire world, I say it again, the entire world is waiting for your next move… because this umma is being torn, it is being destroyed, it is being lost—and it is being lost by our own hands.
Note: It is unclear if in the last instance of umma Sisi is referring to Egypt (“the nation”) or if he is using it in the pan-Islamic sense as he did initially to refer to the entire Islamic world.

In saying this, Sisi has made himself number one target for assassination. The Muslim Brotherhood, ISIS and other Terrorists will have to kill him now that his views have been announced to the world. The fact that he is correct makes it even more hateful to these people!

I was thinking the same.
Now, Sisi will need to be careful even of his own shadow.
Because we know that even his bodyguards may agree to kill him.

I do believe that Muslims will dwell in their darkness forever, now in their temporal miserable life and after death in eternal darkness. But we thank God that He is successful in drawing unto Himself at least a few by their hearing and believing the saving Gospel message. Just what i have been telling Muslims directly or Indirectly. stop forcing your beliefs on the other religious groups. People who think for themselves, like my self question, if Islam is a “Religion of Peace” why are you killing each other?
That j kind of behavior makes it seem like a religion of ignorance.
Next practice Islam as a religion and Government as non-religious. Hatred of Islam is increasing and I believe a modern crusade will be to reduce people of the Islamic faith down to only ten thousand followers. In other words Muslim Genocidal Battles..
Patncats says
If Islam is a religion of peace why are they killing us? In the Koran the kill list is Jews Christians apostates non-believers gay folks & hypocrites. @ Libyan Jihad
You’re a liar. This man is a decent person. He is decent precisely because he knows nothing about the True Islam.
And yes, Egyptian not only tolerate al Sisi, but they totally agree with him. They want a new interpretation of Islam, a truely peaceful one (if such a version of Islam actually exists.)
Muslims tolerating Islam itself, and the PIG who founded it, for 14 centuries is what really drives *me* mad.
The fall of Islam has started, it’s only a matter of time before Muslims themselves start leaving this satanic cult in the millions. Get used to it, it’s coming.
mortimer says
Yes, Sisi is the best. He has spoken the plain truth. Islam actually does call on Muslims to be HUNTERS OF HUMANS and to KILL THEM ALL if they do not accept Mohammed is a valid prophet.
This is tremendous honesty.
The POINT of this is: If Allah wants 7 billion murdered, THEREFORE ISLAM IS FALSE.

And you, Libyan Jihad, are exactly what Mr. Sisi is talking about. You scream about Sisi being a ruthless war cirminal and tyrant, but your own movement has more than enough innocent blood on its hands. You present yourselves as brave and principles–and the world saw Bin Laden boast of how only Muslims could be brave enough to pull off 9/11, only to see him and his supporters whining that it was really the Joooooooooooz who pulled 9/11 as soon as the first American daisy cutter fell near him. I would not be surprised if the fish of the Arabian Sea are now unfit for human consumption from contact with Bin Laden’s corpse! C’mon–your boys think you’re superior to Western homosexuals, but you sodomized Amb,. Stevens as you killed him!
You deny that Jesus paid for our sins by his atoning death on the cross, so your religion demands rivers of human blood as a supposed catharsis, and then wonders why after you stop the killing, you’re left with nothing but slums surrounded by deserts. So you demand more pillaging, looting, and killing!

Lets hope he learns from Atatürk biggest mistake of allowing a few of the Islamic supremacist to live.
Funny thing though, they said he was a joooo also.
Bukkdem Jizheads says
For those who don’t know about Kemel Atatürk, he was the only Muslim general who won a battle in WWI – Gallipoli. He was a hero to Turkey and could have become a dictator. Sisi is a sissy compared to Atatürk. To bring this Muslim country to enlightenment and prosperity, Atatük had to profoundly change Turkey. He set up himself as president and a government by electoral vote. He changed their alphabet and school curricula to Western. He banned the veil and polygamy and opened universities to women.
There’s no hope for any Muslim country unless these kind of measures are taken, and of course it takes killing a lot of imams.
Salah says
President Sisi is actually challenging Muslim clerics. He’s “subtly” giving them two options:
1- Change the violent “thinking” of Islam….if you can!
2- If you can’t…declare bankruptcy!!!
Al Sisi is backed by all if not most the Egyptian people, the great majority of which are Muslims. What does this tell us?
It tells us what I’ve been saying here on JW for years and years:
MOST Muslims are DECENT persons who want nothing to do with violence (thus contradicting Muhammad’s teachings.)
MOST Muslims simply want to live and let live (which is an un-Islamic concept.)
MOST Muslims are living in a state of fear and/or ignorance, they are held captives by a HANDFUL of extremely violent Muslims (i.e. True Muslims.)
MOST Muslims would be more than happy to LEAVE Islam, BUT they’re not yet willing to die for such a liberation.
Give them KNOWLEDGE and PROTECTION, then say…bye bye Islam.
Al Sisi, a man of righteousness and justice, is trying to do just that.

Wellington says
I’m a bit unclear, Salah, how to reconcile your two posts—-the first at 4:50 P.M and the second at 5:14 P.M. Do people like Sisi and so many other Egyptians want, as you wrote in your earlier post, “a new interpretation of Islam,” or is it the case that, per your exact words again in your 5:14 P.M., that “MOST Muslims would be more than happy to LEAVE Islam?” Ah, which is it? Are you perhaps saying that UNLESS a majority of Egyptians get “a new interpretation of Islam” they will then be “happy to LEAVE Islam? If so, I remain dubious, but please clarify if you could.
In any case, Happy New Year, Salah. May 2015 be a year in which millions of Muslims who haven’t yet realized that Islam is just about the greatest con job of all time realize this.
Salah says
Hi Wellington, a very happy New Year to you and your loved ones.
As you probably know, I firmly believe that most Muslims are still being held in the Islamic prison for two main reasons: Ignorance and Fear (I am, of course, excluding True Muslims, these thugs are simply hopeless evil perverts.)
Most Muslims will leave islam if they actually read more about Muhammad, his life and his teachings. But this is not enough, they also need to know that they can safely leave this cult. That’s what I meant in my 5:14 P.M post.
Unfortunately, while Ignorance and Fear are indeed the main two reasons why Muslims are still Muslims, there are other less important reasons that we usually don’t think about. Pride is one of them. Conviction is another one.
Al Sisi and many Muslims are absolutely convinced that Islam is good. They believe that the violent verses of Medina were meant for a specific time and situation. These Muslims are too proud to admit that islam is wrong, they want to prove it right through a new interpretation of Muhammad’s teachings.
As a Catholic, I would like to see all Muslims (and non-Muslims) embrace Catholicism. But, as a human being, I frankly don’t care if they believe in whatever ideology they want as long as they reject violence.
So, if Muslims want to believe in a peaceful version of Islam (which does not exist) I’m OK with that.
As time goes by, these peaceful Muslims will eventually find out that they are following a non-existing religion.
So, yes, Muslims want to leave Islam but they also want to, let’s say, give Islam another LAST chance of reformation.
That’s what I think. I could be wrong.
Happy New Year.
Wellington says
Would, Salah, per your wish, that every Muslim woke up tomorrow a devout Catholic. My God, what a better world it would instantly be. By contrast, imagine if every Roman Catholic woke up tomorrow a devout Muslim. It would be catastrophic for the future of mankind. No one who would assert otherwise is deserving of any respect by those with common sense and accurate knowledge.
I, like you, think that Islam is in its last gasp. It will simply not be able to stand up to the scrutiny that our era is in the process of levelling at it. It is too absurd, too desultory, too totalitarian, too misogynistic and too stupid to survive modern inspection, the current crop of Western elites (Obama, Cameron, Merkel, Kerry, et al.) who keep making pathetic excuses for Islam notwithstanding. It will eventually collapse, both from within and without, though it won’t go peacefully, it won’t go quietly, and so mankind is in a lot of extra trouble as the 21st century rolls on because the death of Islam will not be a pretty thing. Quite the opposite I fear. Said death will be a protracted affair and all mankind will pay a price for it.
Always good to read what you have to say. I agree with most of what you say and even when I don’t I know I’m reading the ideas of someone who is highly knowledgeable and who deserves respect. Take care, Salah.
Salah says
@ Wellington
Thank you, Wellington.
Unfortunately, you’re absolutely right. Islam won’t go down without a lot of bloodshed.
Islam is like a mortally wounded beast. A dying beast is extremely dangerous, especially in its last gasp. Nonetheless, it is DYING.
voegelinian says
Islam has been “dying” for 1400 years. While nothing last forever (including the Athenian civilization Plato esteemed so much, and all civilizations before and since, eventually), that’s no guarantee Islam won’t last another few centuries — time enough for untold replications of what historian Will Durant wrote about just one area of the world — India — out of dozens where Islam spread:
“The Mohammedan Conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history…” — (page 459, Volume 1, of his eight volume Story of Civilization).
Sometimes it can be a strategic error to frame one’s opposition to a problem centrally in terms of some expectation that the problem will be solved by going away soon (whether through destruction, or dismantling, or withering away, or whatever). Sometimes this way of framing it can actually interfere with measures one needs to take to manage the problem, when one is busy being preoccupied with a final “solution” to it. (It’s also rather convenient that the very people who consistently put the brakes on any meme-pushing for the idea (and all policy begins with ideas) of Total Deportation of Muslims from the West, are also the people who, voilà!, also expect Islam to go away in the near future, even if they concede it won’t go away without a little bloodshed (though they don’t seem concerned to want to try to minimize that bloodshed by removing the millions of Muslims from the West who will most assuredly bring bloodshed to our streets in the coming decades if they remain here).)
On Sisi, in another JW thread I adverted to an important Andrew Bostom report from August that provides sound interpretation of evidence that Sisi is a normative Islamic jihadist and not some kind of “reformist” (and shame on any JWer for entertaining the notion that someone as learned in Islam as Sisi must be could possibly be a “reformist”!):
http://www.jihadwatch.org/2015/01/general-allen-us-must-defeat-the-idea-of-the-islamic-state/comment-page-1#comment-1171806
mortimer says
He’s asking them to destroy Islam.
Wellington says
If so, mortimer, than why would anyone want “a new interepretation of Islam,” as Salah claims Sisi and mucho numbers of Egyptian Muslims want? I mean if you want to destroy something, you don’t at the same time ask for a new interpretation of that something unless one is “extra Machiavellian” and I don’t detect that in Sisi (and, btw, is that a damn zebiba on his forehead?) and certainly not in the Egyptian populace as a whole.
BlueRaven says
“I say and repeat again that we are in need of a religious revolution. You, imams, are responsible before Allah. The entire world, I say it again, the entire world is waiting for your next move…”
Here is a great guy doesn’t want Islam to die but evolve and catch up with the 21st Century. He may be targeted by the likes of Jihad Libya, but his words are going to remain forever, long after the vile Sins of Islam are transformed and burnt into ashes. If Egypt swings in the right direction, I think Islam will topple like a pack of cards.
Angemon says
You know, my first thought was “whoa, this guy has balls, he’s going to have a target on his back and a bounty on his head”. But chances are he *already* had a target on his back and a bounty on his head. And what has he done so far to combat islamic “extremism” and promote “moderate” islam? Very little, if not nothing – and he was starting to get flack for it. As it is now, he had time to assess the situation and get an idea of where MB members/supporters/sympathizers are in the political and military apparatuses, of whom he can trust or not, and what he can and can’t do. While I applaud his speech, I’ll wait to see if he acts accordingly.
Jay Boo says
Islamic thinking needs a dose of reverse taqiyya Jiu Jitzu
I suspect that the best approach to talking with Muslims about Islam is to say categorically that Islam needs to be ‘reformed’ (as is it were possible to reform Islam) and then casually list off the many reasons that Islam is actually way beyond reform.
If one tells Muslims directly that Islam is beyond reform, it is the same thing as saying “Islam is a pile of crap” which it is and then they label that person a racist Islamophobe to ban them from speaking.
Wellington says
I agree, Jay Boo, with your approach. Though I am of the conviction that Islam is beyond reform, I don’t start out in argument that way with most, whether with Muslims or clueless dhimmis. Rather, I ask. as an American, how Islam can be reconciled with the basic freedoms of speech and religion guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution and with the Fourteenth Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection under the law. Of course, Islam can’t be reconciled with these constitutional guarantees. No way. And then I go from there, whether with Muslim or dhimmi.
Interesting rhetorical journey at times, to say the least, but what is the alternative? To give up? To despair? No way. Giving up and despairing are indulgences and not strategies. Besides, better dead than not free; better dead than living under the spiritual fascism which is Islam. Here New Hampshire’s state motto never ceases to inspire me———“Live Free Or Die.” (No way in hell that this state motto can be reconciled with Islam. Oh yeah, no way whatsoever.)
Jay Boo says
I can’t take credit for this technique though, Wellington
I noticed Ayaan Hirsi Ali used a modified pre-emptive version of this technique to take a bit of the wind out of the defenders of Islam’s sails before they got a chance to launch their Islamophobia armada.

Sisi: A voice of reason!!! We welcome the Islamic Reformation! He may very well cary Egypt, arguably the most influential Arabic country, into the 21st century… Let us hope. And I stand with the Egyptian people in their revolution (even as an American who knows their antipathy for our policies).
danny says
How can the reform be possible when the koran remain an ultimate source of inspiration for jihadist muslims? Will they tear of koran 5:51, 9:5, 9:29-30 etc from the koran?
Islam can only be reformed by letting muslims know how pervert their prophet is and giving them a historical background of their violent religion, from the 1st to the 5th caliph.
Matthieu Baudin says
Yes Danny, it may be that the Koran is unsalvageable, I’ve read it all and was appalled. But social movements and politics are driven by fallible people who can’t entirely untangle themselves from the cultural and religious baggage of their upbringing. Many Muslims would like to live quiet ordinary lives and be part of our modern universal civilization, unfortunately however they remain linked to a faith with a totalitarian backbone. At the present time it’s the more secular Kurdish fighters and individuals like Mr. Sisi who are taking the fight to the enemy and are the greatest hope for breaking the back of the current batch of millenarian fanatics in the middle east.
Elisheva says
I think Sisi is a powerful force with the Egyptian Military behind him. Qatar has renewed relations with Egypt and Hamas leadership is moving from Qatar to Iran. Iran is a worry to the Middle East with the US supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and Iran.

Agreed, wholeheartedly. Egypt has always been a beacon of hope in a the polluted sea of the North African occupation. To progress, everyone should be ready abandon ideas when new discoveries are made. Hell, scientists all over the world keep changing their theories about what constitutes nature all the time. So much so that they compete with each other intensely in this pursuit of truth. Psychology of today has given us an understanding of what makes people happy. However, religions concern themselves with what makes for happiness in the after life and claim to know everything about it when in fact there is not a shred of evidence. To accept what Sisi is saying will constitute a revolution. So why is Sisi imploring the Muftis to do it? What makes him think that these people who survive by collecting money by fooling their flocks will ever give up the formula that has worked for centuries in their favor? I think, it will be easier for them to have him murdered.
