Italy: Muslims destroy and urinate on Virgin Mary statue

Friday, January 9. A man was kneeling in prayer before the statue of the revered Madonna, with the photograph of a loved one in hand, in the small chapel of St. Barnabas in Perugia (Italy), when he was attacked by five “immigrants.”

The first thing they did was rip the photo from his hands.

Next they unleashed their hatred against the image of the Virgin Mary. They broke the statue to pieces and then urinated on it.

Don Scarda, pastor of St. Barnabas, said the event was led by five “foreigners.”  By the time police arrived at the chapel, the unidentified attackers had already fled.

The incident has caused a stir among locals. Some have lambasted Pope Francis who is accused of appeasing immigrants—mostly Muslims—to wild extremes.   Earlier he had said that “Migrants, through their own humanity, cultural values, expand the sense of human brotherhood.”

Although the Diocese condemned the act of sacrilege against the Madonna statue, it also followed the Pope’s lead by absolving Islam of any responsibility for what happened.  In the words of Monsignor Paolo Giulietti, the auxiliary bishop of Città della Pieve, near Perugia:

For Islam, the figure of Mary is very important: she is the mother of the Prophet Jesus conceived in virginity, and the Blessed Virgin is the most holy woman.  Muslims pray at the Marian shrines in the Middle East. We cannot see in this act of vandalism—which as I said is wrong in every way—an episode of religious hatred. It is important not to feed mutual suspicion, especially at this time.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis has called on Catholics and Western people in general to refrain from insulting other religions—namely Islam: “It’s normal, it’s normal [violence]. One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people’s faith, one cannot make fun of faith.”

He made these statements on January 16, apparently in reference to the Charlie Hebdo massacre, when armed Muslims killed a dozen non-Muslims working for a satirical magazine that had mocked Islamic prophet Muhammad.

One wonders if the Pope would call it “normal” if members of his own flock were to murder those who urinated on the Virgin statue?

Thanks to funding from neighbors, the desecrated image could be restored and replaced in its original location. Hundreds of Catholics participated that day in a rosary of relief.

You mean there wasn’t tens of thousands marching in the streets yelling “Behead those who did this!”, there wasn’t a call at the UN to criminalize those who insult a religion, there wasn’t a call from mass media and politicians to curtail free speech? And no mosques were fire-bombed? No moslems were killed in retribution? You mean the community got together, condemmed the actions of the savages who did this, then fixed it?

    And meanwhile, the Pope and the Diocese cowered and begged forgiveness and understanding of the poor little moslem savages, who shouldn’t be held to account. Don’t want to stir up trouble, after all.

    Remarkable. Sad. Ridiculous. Foreboding.

    It only ever goes one way. Muslims literally get away with murder. Non-Muslims are sent to prison if they so much as offend Muslims.

  9. Mary is mentioned (positively) more times in the Quran than in the Bible.

    • The guy was praying in front of a statue. For muslims, that counts as idolatry.

  10. We’re rapidly moving toward two distinct political divisions (and societies). One is made up of liars, vandals, rioters, looters, thieves, bombers, murderers, barbarians, and their enablers where Islam fits so nicely. The other is everyone else aka the modern civilized world.

  11. Was raised Catholic and considering changing denominations now. We got a “Dhimmi” Pope and Vatican is appeasing and denying. Pope Urban II is spinning in his grave, I would expect a lightning bolt hitting Vatican any time from above or some sign that Vatican is way off course now.

    Will expect further nothing but further appeasement and grovelling from Vatican on anything Islamist or Jihadi. Shameful how this devolved.

    • The Church is the only means of Salvation Christ left us here on earth. If you are on a Ship during a major storm and two guys in the captains wheel are having a knife fight it would be idiotic to just jump ship. He hold on to dear life. It doesn’t matter what the Pope’s opinions are that should not get in the way of you developing your soul and becoming a Saint.

    • You should do a closer reading of teachings/history; and not from a sweep-that-under-the-rug Protestant source either. I find it odd when people say they’re going to leave Catholicism if they were raised as Catholics, all over what a freakin’ leader has to say. Even though there are thousands of versions of Protestants and many of the leaders are indeed awful and embarrassing and make non-religious people think that Christians are “nut cases.” A lot of those who want to leap probably have a weak faith to begin with though, and that’s why they’ve bought the nonsense from the obnoxious “Jesus is my boyfriend” churches which are all feel-good and focused on the individual’s “faith and faith” alone, type of mentality. Tradition should be appreciated and celebrated in my personal opinion. Western society lacks much of that today, while it still exists in non-western societies where Christians aren’t following the “trendy,” stripped back version Christianity. Other than of course, due to more recent missionaries who spread these ideas. The poor western Protestants, especially the recent converts; trying to tell me about the “true form” of Christianity in their holier-than-thou tone. Ummm…. Tell me what they could know about this while only having western family and living in a “mixed bag” or “secular” society, and only having just picked up a Bible (which apparently many cannot read properly despite their lording).

    • Certainly looks like this will be the last Pope.
      That means there will be a bloody battle soon between Islam and the rest of the world. I just hope that the rest of the world dumps PC and fights.

  12. I, for one, expect the Pope to call in to tell the migrants how their actions weren’t compatible with a “true reading” of islam.

    In any case, this is fodder to the idea that laws against insulting one’s religion should be made and enforced ASAP. It seems like Italy could pay their external debt on fines from muslims alone!

  13. This is an absolute disgrace! How dare they? One might quote God when he said to Satan ” From whence did you come?” I can not see God not punishing this grave act. It is just so foul is screams from the bowls of hell. Unfortunately even our own leader plays the role of diplomat. This is our Blessed Mother grow some balls and defend her! Second, to go along with those who diminish Christ as mere man and not defend His two Nature as God and Man is to engage in the very heresy itself. Blessed Mother pray for the West, Pray for our Pope, pray for conversion. Blessed Mother I am deeply sorry and Jesus I am sad and sorry your mother was gravely insulted.

    Muslims destroy Christian religious symbols: Christian religious leaders tell Christians not to be Islamophobic, not to retaliate and of course they maintain that this is not Islam’s fault and that Islam is a “religion of peace.”

  20. One needs to grasp the psychology of what is happening, and of islam, which is a collective psychology. What is happening is vast and quite frightening, and cannot be stopped with appeasements. What is being done now, to this important symbol, will soon be done to christians in their own lands, churches and homes, and worse still. These things have been under observation and in the works for a very long time. Only our eyes has been shut. Now an ultimate danger is upon us. We must unite and act.

This Argentinian should be more concerned with the thousands of Christians who are being murdered on a going basis by the religion of peace. You know…Suleiman, the Great, Caliph in the 1600’s vowed to stable his horses in St. Peter’s. Well. with leadership like this present pope ….Suleiman’s desire may still occur.

  23. As mortifying as this attack was, I am afraid that is not the first of its kind nor will it be the last of its kind. Not by a long shot. However we should not be dismayed by this . For each act of barbarism perpetrated by these invaders and their benefactors will inexorably draw us closer by degrees to that most glorious of days when the Christian people of Europe once more recognise themselves to be as such and come out of their torpor once and for all to reclaim what all thought was lost – Christendom – and the totality of their institutions – from the lowliest to the most high – both from these invaders and their treacherous enablers. Deus vult.
