In FrontPage today I examine Fox News’ notorious apology, and the need for it:
The Leftist media and Islamic supremacist groups have been doing a victory dance ever since Saturday night, when Fox News issued an apology for statements made on the air by terror expert Steve Emerson and others about Muslim no-go zones in Britain and France. However, the apology doesn’t say what it has widely reported as saying – and there is considerable evidence that Muslim areas in both countries are a growing law enforcement and societal problem.
Fox Report host Julie Banderas stated:
Over the course of this last week we have made some regrettable errors on air regarding the Muslim population in Europe, particularly with regard to England and France. Now, this applies especially to discussions of so-called ‘no-go zones,’ areas where non-Muslims allegedly aren’t allowed in and police supposedly won’t go.
To be clear, there is no formal designation of these zones in either country and no credible information to support the assertion there are specific areas in these countries that exclude individuals based solely on their religion.
There are certainly areas of high crime in Europe as there are in the United States and other countries — where police and visitors enter with caution. We deeply regret the errors and apologize to any and all who may have taken offense, including the people of France and England.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s joyous headline read: “Fox News admits ‘no-go zones’ are fantasy.” The far-Left Crooks and Liars blog exulted: “Fox Pundits Finally ‘Apologize’ After A Week Of Being Mocked For ‘No Go Zones’ Claim.” More restrained but still unmistakably gleeful was the New York Times: “Fox News Apologizes for False Claims of Muslim-Only Areas in England and France.” The Leftist media has seized on Fox’s apology to declare that there are aren’t any no-go zones in France or Britain – and by extension that there is no problem with Muslim populations in Europe. NewHounds’s summation was typical: “Fox News has become the laughingstock of Europe this week as first England and then France lampooned its ignorant, Islamophobic reporting.”
The only problem with all the cork popping around Fox’s apology was that there is a problem with Muslim areas in Europe – and the Fox apology didn’t go so far as to say there wasn’t. To be sure, the controversy began with undeniably inaccurate statements from Emerson. He said on Fox on January 11 that “there are actual cities like Birmingham that are totally Muslim, where non-Muslims just simply don’t go in.” That is false, and Emerson has acknowledged that and apologized.
However, Emerson was not guilty of fabrication, just of overstatement. Some of the comments on a piece in the UK’s Daily Mail about his gaffe and British Prime Minister David Cameron’s reaction to it (he called Emerson a “complete idiot”) insisted that Emerson was at least partially right: “Just shows cameron doesn’t even know what is happening in this country , as the news presenter is totally correct , its a no go zone .” “There ARE some parts of Birmingham where you darent or shouldn’t go !” “Is he far off the truth? Maybe it’s not true for Birmingham as a whole but there are certain areas where it is true. Certainly it is true of certain other Towns in the UK. Bradford, Leicester, Luton spring to mind.”
Fox’s apology stated that,
“To be clear, there is no formal designation of these zones in either country and no credible information to support the assertion there are specific areas in these countries that exclude individuals based solely on their religion.”
That says as much as it says, and no more. It says that neither the British nor the French government has designated any areas to be no-go zones where non-Muslims aren’t allowed in, and that there is no evidence that non-Muslims are not allowed into any areas in either country.
But this carefully worded statement does not actually say that there aren’t areas in Britain or France in which non-Muslims are menaced for not adhering to Islamic law. That is a real and abundantly documented problem. Emerson pointed to it when he said:
“In parts of London, there are actually Muslim religious police that actually beat and actually wound, seriously, anyone who doesn’t dress according to Muslim, religious Muslim attire.”
While Emerson’s implication that this was an ongoing phenomenon was false, there were indeed such Sharia enforcers in London between 2011 and 2013. In July 2011, the UK’s Daily Mail reported:
“Islamic extremists have launched a poster campaign across the UK proclaiming areas where Sharia law enforcement zones have been set up. Communities have been bombarded with the posters, which read: ‘You are entering a Sharia-controlled zone – Islamic rules enforced.’”
In December 2013, members of one of these self-styled “Muslim patrols” were imprisoned; according to the Guardian, in London they
“harassed people, berating them with shouts of ‘this is a Muslim area!’ They forced men to dump their alcoholic drinks, instructed women on the appropriate way to dress, and yelled insults at those they perceived to be gay.”
They didn’t just berate people; as Emerson said, they beat them. In YouTube videos, they threatened to do so, saying: “We are coming to implement Islam upon your own necks.” In June 2013, Muslims attacked an American who was drinking on the street, grabbing the bottle out of his hands and smashing him in the eye with it, causing permanent injury. In August 2013, according to the Daily Mail, “two brothers in law who went on a sponsored walk wearing comedy mankinis had to be picked up by police – after they were pelted with stones and eggs by residents who told them ‘this is a Muslim area’ and demanded they leave.”
A “Muslim area” – maybe even a “no-go zone.” Not in the sense that non-Muslims are barred from entering, but in that, if they do enter, they have to adhere to Sharia restrictions.
The Fox apology is all the more curious in light of the fact that others, even on the Left, have noticed the no-go zones in France before some Fox commentators began talking about them in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks. David Ignatius wrote in the New York Times in April 2002:
“Arab gangs regularly vandalize synagogues here, the North African suburbs have become no-go zones at night, and the French continue to shrug their shoulders.”
Newsweek, hardly a conservative organ, reported in November 2005 that
“according to research conducted by the government’s domestic intelligence network, the Renseignements Generaux, French police would not venture without major reinforcements into some 150 ‘no-go zones’ around the country–and that was before the recent wave of riots began on Oct. 27.”
The police wouldn’t venture into these areas without major reinforcements in 2005. Does anyone really think that the situation has improved in the intervening years?
And the day after the Charlie Hebdo massacre set off Fox’s discussions of no-go zones in France, the reliably Leftist New Republic wrote:
“The word banlieue (‘suburb’) now connotes a no-go zone of high-rise slums, drug-fueled crime, failing schools and poor, largely Muslim immigrants and their angry offspring.”
So something the New York Times noted in 2002 and Newsweek in 2005, and that the New Republic reported was still a problem in January 2015, is now something that Fox News has to apologize for discussing?
Clearly there is a problem in these areas. Two of the three Charlie Hebdo murderers were born and raised in France. Where did they get their ideas about killing blasphemers? Not from French schools. They learned them in the Muslim areas where they were born and raised. What’s more, France leads the West in the number of Muslims who have traveled from there to wage jihad for the Islamic State, with well over a thousand Muslims leaving France to join the caliphate. Where did they get their understanding of Islam?
In objecting to Fox’s coverage, the French government objected to claims that these areas were outside their control and subject to Sharia, but it is obvious that whatever control they do have over these areas is not enough to prevent the indoctrination of all too many young Muslims into the jihad ideology.
There needs to be a balanced, honest public discussion of these Muslim areas in Britain and France. The controversy over what has been said on Fox in recent weeks only obscures the need for that discussion. And Fox’s apology, however carefully worded, only plays into the hands of Leftists and Islamic supremacists who have a vested interest in rendering people ignorant and complacent about the reality of what is going on in these areas.
So now would be a good time for Fox to apologize for its apology – and to devote extended attention to the Muslim areas of Britain and France, and shed light on what is really going on in them. That would be to provide a service far greater than the usual surface-scratching of television news.

A whole lot to do about nothing…Certainly anyone can go anywhere they want, in ‘no go zones’, but why would kuffar want to besides emergency services?
Cant they read the signs? ‘Enter at your own risk’, ‘abandon hope all ye who enter here’, ‘sharia enforced’…Signs are not always posted, some of them are just good common sense. I suggest the editors of the gloating rags, visit one of these area’s and take a walk around after dark, if all they get is smiles and friendly greetings, then they can gloat…

The no-go zones are not a mirage…they are real. They are dangerous. A small group of American politicians casually visited such a no-go zone in Brussels. After a few minutes, a crowd of angry men was staring at the group with hostility. It became so dangerous, the police escort demanded the Americans leave. A former Marine put his hand inside his lapel and walked backwards until they left.

Wait what. I thought there were literally 751 “Sensitive Urban Areas” (“Zones Urbaines Sensibles”/ ZUS) that were officially so designated by the French government itself. Is that no longer the case? What am I missing here? Here’s a link to a WaTimes article from 2008 referring to these Areas.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jan/16/sensitive-urban-areas/
And I know for a fact that I have read [more than once] that these are areas officially so designated by either the French Police or the French government itself.
Can anybody shed any light here? Are there these 751 officially designated areas or not? And if there are, what’s the hubbub and why the apology?

Fox shouldn’t have fallen all over themselves apologizing. They should have cleared up the error then continued on with what is well-known and documented. All that bowing and scraping to CAIR comes off as no better than their detractors. Who’s dictating to them??
Anonymous 13 says
Dear Mr. R. Spencer:
It would be great to see you–and others in the conservative media–write a follow-up article to this one stating that if these “No-Go” areas really do not exist–whether officially or unofficially–then it would be a perfect opportunity for some Investigative Journalists who make this claim to conduct some actual “investigation” into this matter in order to empirically verify their allegedly assertion. For example, these journalists could, while wearing a concealed body camera, walk through a number of these “No-Go” areas at a decent time of night (10:00 pm or so) while acting in a flamboyantly homosexual manner, wearing a cross and a t-shirt with Mohammed on it, drinking alcohol, and repeating “Je suis Charlie!” (or something like this). Then, if nothing happens–as nothing should, if there are no “No-Go” zones and if freedom and the rule-of-law is respected in these locations–they have been proven correct. But if something does happen–which it will–the body camera can record the whole interaction from start to finish, including how the Muslims in the area react as well as how long the police take to respond after the journalist is inevitability assaulted, and also how the police will quietly tell the journalist after everything is over: “What the hell were you doing, man? Don’t you know this is a no-go area.”
Finally, in your article, you could make the prediction that absolutely no leftist journalist will actually conduct such an investigation to prove either the existence or non-existence of these alleged “No-Go” zones. And why? Because they all know that they actually exist and they all know that they would be risking life-and-limb if they tried such a stunt.
So the situation would be a win-win: if a journalist does undertake such an investigation, it will quickly and easily prove the existence of these “No-Go” areas, and if no journalist decides to undertake such an investigation, then it will show that they are cowards who all know that such zones exist, but they do not want to admit it.
Anyway, just a thought. Keep up the good work!
Anonymous 13.

I have been disappointing in FOX talking heads for some time. Megyn is a liberal in disguise, Hannity thinks Islam has been hijacked, they all remind us often about peaceful Mahoundians and how they all can’t be guilty. What they do is accurate, but not precise. None of them will cross the line into precisely. There is always some kind of deflection covering it. So far I’m surprised that Bill O is as accurate and PO’ed as he sounds, but he too hedges his bets.
Don McKellar says
There is only one thing to say about this affair:
Emerson needs to get his freaking act together before he ever shows up for another media interview and make sure he isn’t sloppy with his facts. He needs to take a page from Robert Spencer who is unassailable to the jackals of disinformation. The bleary-eyed leftist media and their Islamic supremacist masters are desperate for any tiny scrap they can get to blow completely out of proportion. Because there is virtually nothing — NOTHING! — to support the fantasy they try and portray about Islam. And the overwhelming run of jihad terror continues to escalate out of control, ripping apart their paper facade with every new vicious murder accompanied by the shriek of “Allah Ahkbar!”
Charles R.L. Power says
As best I can tell, you are admitting that the “no-go zones” story is an exaggeration, and whining that the exaggeration has been caught out. Then it’s clear you can’t tell much
Wellington says
Echoing Angemon, you indeed can’t tell much. There are definitely Muslim no-go zones in European nations like France and Britain. That was the whole point of the aritcle by Robert Spencer. Yes, Steve Emerson did overstate things about Birmingham but the error lay in, as Robert Spencer wrote, overstatement and not falsehood. There’s also the matter of leftist rags like The New York Times seizing upon any mistake made by those in the anti-jihad movement (and Emerson has been in this movement for over twenty years and has done outstanding work) in order to discredit it, all the while such leftist publications have gone out of their way on a grand scale to exculpate Muslim wrongdoing. Read more carefully next time, will ya’?
Charles R.L. Power says
Geez, you say “overstatement” and I say “exaggeration.” Neither is a great idea. Got it? I don’t know why I have to explain these things.
Wellington says
“Overstatement” v. “exaggeration” are of minimal difference, if any. The reason why I objected to your post, and I should have been clearer the first time, is your assertion that this article is evidence of “dodgy claims which make Jihad Watch look like a crank site.” Now, that is overstatement (or “exaggeration” if you like). I trust this time I have been crystal clear. So, a la your own words, “get a grip.”
voegelinian says
“As best I can tell, you are admitting that the “no-go zones” story is an exaggeration, and whining that the exaggeration has been caught out.”
Nope. The exaggeration was not caught out. The exaggeration which was partly inaccurate was strawmanned as completely false, then a tribalistic victory dance was done to intimidate everyone into conformity with the prevailing PC MC paradigm. Furthermore, the sloppiness of the mainstream media here has far worse consequences than does Emerson’s slip.
Thus, we see that “Charles R.L. Power” is perpetuating the same disinformation-by-mischaracterization indulged in by the mainstream media.
Charles R.L. Power says
Wow. “Partly inaccurate” but “strawmanned as completely false.” Hysterical, desperate hairsplitting. All comes down to NOT the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. NOT. When an honest journalist realizes that what he said is NOT THE TRUTH, he apologizes. Do you really truly not understand this?
marc says
I can give you a list of a dozen areas of London and the suburbs when you can can test how long you survive dressed like an English Jew wearing a kippa, let us know how you get on, most hospitals have internet access.
Charles R.L. Power says
The “no-go zones” were not presented where it was imprudent for Jews to go, but as areas where police refused to go. Can you give me a specific address in London or Paris or any other European city where the police will refuse to respond to a call? If not, the “no-go zone” story is false.
I’m not trying to defend Muslims or Islam. Islam is a lousy religion and Muslims have actually succeeded in making a bad thing worse. But it will not pay to tell stories which aren’t true.
Tim says
You don’t understand the no-go reference in Europe. You can’t say that police is too scared to enter any area in the US either since all they need to do is bring a swat team. But the public feels unsafe to enter areas. That’s what a no-go zone is.
Here’s only one example from British media itself and it only took me 2 seconds to find it. The rest you can do your own research for:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2541635/Murders-rapes-going-unreported-no-zones-police-minority-communities-launch-justice-systems.html
Charles R.L. Power says
Tim, if you are going to redefine “no-go zones” you can certainly find some. But I watch Fox News. Again and again and again it was said that there were areas of certain cities where police did not dare to go, and these were known as “no-go zones.” If you’re going to redefine these zones as “places where people don’t call the police when they should” or “places where people feel unsafe,” yeah, right, you’ll find such places in Baltimore, without benefit of Muslims.

I think it would be perfectly reasonable to say some areas of the “banlieues” of certain French cities are heavily Muslim and there are ones where strangers might feel uncomfortable and be at higher than usual risk. I’d just say that there has been an element of exaggeration, but I don’t think that should be used to pretend there are no problems, as this article says some parts of the press have done.
Regarding Muslim “religious police” in the UK, I do recall articles saying that gangs were operating at one point in the Brick Lane area of London, as informal “religious police”. I’m not sure if it’s supposedly still the case or not. Re. Birmingham, I don’t know the place well, but was certainly “allowed in” last time I went…
voegelinian says
I frankly don’t trust the mainstream news media to be doing their job investigating and reporting these phenomena. Given their record and comportment, I say the people have a right to believe what they want until the mainstream proves them wrong (definitively and substantively, of course); and not one second sooner.
Wellington says
I agree, voegelinian. The burden of proof by now has shifted to those who deny no-go zones and no longer rests upon those who assert that such zones exist. Steve Emerson’s statement about Birmingham was not accurate, but in typical “let’s-absolve-Muslims-of-any-wrongdoing” mode, the MSM and political elites and all the other predictable gang of dhimmi defenders of Islam, have parasitically seized upon this unfortuante mistake to dismiss, once again, the entire movement that is trying to warn the West in general of the spiritual fascism which is Islam.

At least Bobby Jindal had the guts to say that the issue is real when all the MSM news channels were giving a flood of apologies i.e. Ghetto-isation of Islamic communities – but this is a global phenomena – muslims in non-muslim secular societies set up no go zones where non muslims feel unsafe and / or are stopped in exercising their fundamental rights like women wearing clothes they like, eating/ drinking during a muslims fasting month, singing / celebrations etc. without having a muslim thug come up to you and say you cannot do this in a “Sharia compliant / Hallal area”.
Islam is not consistent with values enshrined in constitution of secular and free societies and followers of Islam need to reconsider moving to these societies and creating same environment in countries which they have left e.g. Pakistanis, Somalis, Palestinians etc.

The apology was made in the wrong fashion. They should have said instead, that they had a slip of the tongue. There indeed are MUSLIM ENCLAVES all over England and France – and many parts of Europe, where it is intimidating and threatening to go. This is absolutely 100% accurate. Let these socialist loonies play their games and lie, but everyone knows it is true. Fox has made themselves into a ridicule by apologizing in the wrong way.
If European media wants to ridicule fox anyone can make references to their own reporting and counter-sue them for false journalism if they claim these reports are suppose to be made up. They’re only painting themselves into a corner.

Daniel Pipes
I have visited predominantly immigrant (and largely Muslim) areas of Brussels, Copenhagen, Malmö, Stockholm, Berlin, Paris, and Athens. In the case of Paris, I spent time both in Belleville and in such suburbs as Sarcelles, Val d’Oise, and Seine Saint Denis.
Before my travels, I expected these areas to be similar to the worst areas of the United States, such as the Bronx or Detroit, where buildings are decrepit, streets menacing, and outsiders feel distinctly unwelcome.
My experiences starting in 2007 belied this expectation. All the immigrant areas turned out to be well maintained, with safe streets, and no sense of intimidation. I walked around, usually with camera in hand, and felt at ease. I encountered no difficulties at all.
That said, there is a reason why the French government calls these regions sensibles (sensitive, delicate). They contain many social pathologies (unemployment, drugs, political extremism), they seethe with antagonism toward the majority society, and are prone to outbreaks of violence.
So, from an American point of view, these areas are a bit confusing: potentially dangerous, yes, but in normal times very ordinary looking and with no sense of foreboding. Thus, the term no-go zone does not accurately reflect the situation.

zones are a reallity. Some even say that somedays they are the only french, spanish, belgians or wathever to ride the subway, because all the other people are imigrants or descendants….Years ago,in Norway where I was on an organized tour the GUIDE (spanish girl) told the group NOT TO GO to certains places, because it could be dangerous. I said years ago, and it was in 2007.

I’m not Jewish and grew up in a a Jewish area of an English city with no one feeling the least apprehension of Jews
. I cannot believe that it is possible for a Jew nowadays o live and grow up unharmed in a Muslim area of that same city. Don’t believe the peecee politicians. Read The Mail online for reports [and of course JH!].

Re: “To be clear, there is no formal designation of these zones in either country and no credible information to support the assertion there are specific areas in these countries that exclude individuals based solely on their religion.”
