This is long overdue. Other countries in the West should follow suit. Obama should also consider imitating Abbott’s relative forthrightness in articulating what we’re up against: “The Islamist death-cult has declared war on the world.” The word “Islamist” is often used to create an artificial distance between jihadis and the teachings of Islam that inspire them, but at least Abbott is properly identifying the wellspring from which they come, which could lead to policies properly formulated to deal with the actual threat — policies that have so far been notably absent from the West’s response to the threat.
“‘The Islamist death cult has declared war on the world’: PM announces he will STRIP jihadists of their citizenship as it’s revealed THIRTY extremists have returned home to Australia from the Middle East,” by Freya Noble and Daniel Piotrowski, Daily Mail Australia, February 23, 2015 (thanks to Lookmann):
Many Australians who fight for the Islamic State will be stripped of their citizenship, the Prime Minister has announced, as part of tough new counter-terrorism laws.
The dramatic pledge came as a review released today revealed more than thirty Australians have returned home after fighting for jihadist causes overseas.
In a landmark national security address, Mr Abbott said the government will attempt to strip or suspend the citizenship of Australians with dual citizenship fighting overseas.
The government is also exploring taking away some of the rights of jihadists who are sole Australian citizens, Mr Abbott said.
That could include restricting their access to welfare payments, to consular help and their ability to leave or return to Australia.
‘The Islam-ist death-cult has declared war on the world,’ Mr Abbott said during today’s announcement.
‘We cannot allow bad people to use our good nature against us.’
He added that Sydney siege gunman Man Monis had been given the benefit of the doubt too many times, including with citizenship.
Mr Abbott also confirmed that ASIO is currently investigating thousands of terror leads and suspects, with 400 people deemed high risk.
‘That’s more than double the number a year ago,’ Mr Abbott told the assembled crowd, which included top national security officers from the Australian Federal Police.
A crackdown on so-called ‘hate preachers’ and the appointment of a national counter-terrorism tsar were also announced.
The public will have more information available to them about the country’s current terror threat – which now sits at high – so they can better understand the system and its levels.
Today’s address follows the release of government’s review of Sydney’s Martin Place siege on Sunday, which revealed crazed gunman Man Haron Monis ‘slipped through the cracks of the system’.
On Sunday when Mr Abbott released the review, he said that a shift in the balance between individual freedoms and community safety.
‘There is an ongoing and inevitable debate in a country such as ours … between the rights of the individual and the protection of the community,’ he said.
‘My judgment is that – while having always to respect both – the question of precisely where we draw the line in the era of terrorism will have to be reconsidered and the line may have to be redrawn.’
Despite an apparent 18 calls to ASIO in the days leading up to December 15 when Monis took 18 people hostage in the Lindt Cafe, authorities had deemed him as not a threat.
The inquiry report made a number of recommendations and Mr Abbott and NSW Premier Mike Baird said governments needed to learn lessons from the siege.
‘Plainly, this monster should not have been in our community,’ Mr Abbott said.
‘The difficulty is that while he was well and truly on a lot of radar screens, he was routinely assessed as not being a threat to himself or to the community.
‘Plainly, at some stage he did become a threat. We obviously do need more checks and more scrutiny in the visa process, in the citizenship process.’
The new counter-terrorism measures set to be announced on Monday are going to deal increasingly with ‘home-grown terrorists’, like Australia’s most wanted jihadists Mohammed Elomar and Khaled Sharrouf.
Sharrouf and Elomar both fled Australia to join the Islamic State insurgents fighting in Syria and Iraq in 2013 and in July 2014 the Australian Federal Police issued arrest warrants for the disturbed pair.
Sharrouf flew out of Sydney in December 2013 using his brother’s passport and was soon followed by his convert wife Tara Nettleton who brought their five children to the Middle East with her.
The men gained notoriety as part of the more than 100 Australians who have joined Islamic State after they posted disturbing photos of themselves holding up decapitated heads of Syrian soldiers last year.
Sharrouf even got his seven-year-old son to hold up the severed head of a soldier in the Syrian city of Raqqa, accompanied with the caption ‘that’s my boy’, in an image that shocked the world.

YES – it would be very appropriate if Obama, and his Administration, followed suit.
However, I doubt that would EVER occur, as long as Obama is in “Imperial”, Islam, Muslim, Pandering, Control of America.
Hopefully, our NEXT American Leader, and Administration, will NOT be “Owned” by Islam, and Maybe, just MAYBE, the “Black Flag of Islam” will NOT fly over the White House, as the Islamists have Threatened.
Don McKellar says
Of course that won’t happen with Obama.
He has placed the safety of moslems and the advancement of Islam over the safety of the American people and the advancement of liberty.

An excellent start. We were expecting something like this considering Abbot’s comments a few days ago. From his manner, I suspect that Abbot is testing the water of public opinion, and this will NOT be the end of Austraila’s response to Islamic terror.
So, we now have TWO world leaders showing balls: Abbot and Sisi.

Yes, Abbot and Harper, but NOT Sisi. The Counter-Jihad should never trust a Muslim (though a Muslim strongman (i.e., a dictator who is relatively West-friendly (for the wrong reasons, of course) and who keeps the natural, inevitable recrudescence of fanatical Islam in his society relatively in check) can be useful for our primary priority: the security of our societies)

voegelinian says
There are almost half a million Muslims in Australia composed of a mix of those who immigrated in the past (or even were born there) and those who have been streadily streaming in; with signs this tide of influx is only increasing; and Abbot shows no signs of slowing that tide of immigration down. After all, if Muslims are not stabbing or exploding, all Western countries are obliged to let them in to settle and plant their roots and tendrils deep into our soil as a Trojan Camel. And about that larger problem, even Abbot and Harper say and do nothing rational.
Georg says
‘We cannot allow bad people to use our good nature against us.’
Well if he’s letting so many Muslims into the country the electorate had better hold his feet to the fire on this. As we know, talk is cheap.

Paradoxically, the more our leaders claim that “Islam is th RoP”, the more the population thinks otherwise.

I wonder if “Islam is the RoP”, a deliberate policy to invoke a contrary response.
jihad me at hello says
David P. Goldman says something similar in his book “How Civilizations Die (And Why Islam Is Dying Too)”. He goes into detail over declining birth rates in the Muslim world, like how Irans birth rate has declined from 7 children per woman in the 1970’s to 1.5 children today. Mid this century it mean those born in the 1970’s will vastly outnumber the people being born now, who will be the main tax payers for an already backwards country. The author says things won’t be too rosy for Europe either but Europe at least has better technology and capital to deal with it, which Iran doesn’t, backing up the wounded beast concept seeing its own decline. Also interesting is that many middle class university educated Iranian woman who lack for nothing materially voluntarily enter prostitution, their nihilistic way of felling empowered. Such lack of hold of Islam on the mind within some areas of Iranian society will be a worry to fanatics, who feel they may have to push their agenda even harder.
Muhammad Bear says
Assuming this is Abbot’s intention, I wonder if the Executive branch of the Australian government actually has the power to strip someone of their citizenship without any due process.
I would have thought that the person would first need to be found guilty of a crime, in a court of law, for which forfeiture of citizenship is a punishment. I wonder what, if any law, these Jihadis have actually broken. From what I understand they have been fighting against the Syrian government and not the Australian government. If so, it may be a very unwelcome loophole in the law.
Regardless, from a civil liberties perspective, it would be setting a very dangerous precedent to strip someone of their citizenship with no due process before an independent court.
biff says
Progressives will use the courts as much as possible to block protecting the peacful citizens of the country.
It’s much more important that progressives demonstrate to each other how truly progressive they are.
Who will go the farthest in embracing a culture that wants your specifically dead. The crazier and more extreme the Muslim is that progressives support the more they are proving to us how progressive they are.
Their badge of honor comes when the Muslim they import and support finally kills one of their own family members in an act of terrorism.
Then finally they have another boy scout badge of “respecting all religions”.
The truely devout progressive will even support Muslims against their own family. That’s a sign of how far they are willing to go to earn their progressive, gluten free, sustainable cotton badge.
Muhammad Bear says
While I agree with a lot of what you say, by giving up our freedoms and safeguards in the name of security we play directly into the hands of Progressives. It’s all just Hegelian Dialectic in action: Problem, reaction, solution.
Statistically, as a Westerner, you are more likely to die from a bee sting than as the result of a terrorist attack.
Given these low odds, I would rather preserve my right to due process.
bewick says
Today it is statistically more likely that you’ll be killed by a bee sting – perhaps. What about tomorrow though? Given the exponential way in which islamism (and islam) is spreading “tomorrow” may not, after all, be a fictional time in the future. It might be in 6 months or less. For some , in Syria, Iraq, Libya “tomorrow” is already here and their chance of death by jihadi is already likely statistically greater than being killed by a bee sting. Whilst I fully respect due process it is a fact that desperate times demand desperate measures. The major problem is going to be those without dual citizenship.

We give up our freedoms no matter what we do.
The choice is between giving them up to regressive illiterate theocrats and their useful idiot jihadists or take steps via the democratic process to establish processes and actions that eliminate this vermin.
If this choice is explained to the population then, with the exception of progressive pathological altruists, unanimously they will support the latter.
Mr Abbot is one of all too few Western leaders (Stephen Harper is getting there) who recognises the issue. More importantly he speaks out clearly against it and allies to that positive action to combat it.
Three cheers for Mr Abbot!
RonaldB says
“Regardless, from a civil liberties perspective, it would be setting a very dangerous precedent to strip someone of their citizenship”
Absolutely correct. What the government can do to returning jihadists who are Australian citizens, it can do to anyone. In other words, using the same arbitrary powers, the Obama administration could strip the citizenship of anyone traveling to Israel. If you give the politicians you like the arbitrary power to ignore individual rights, the politicians you don’t like will have the same power.
Having said that, this is the consequence of uncontrolled immigration: you stress the security agencies, which need more power to provide the security. This raises the cost of security, deteriorates physical security in any case, and necessitates the shrinking of individual rights. There’s no way around it.
In fact, this is one of the objectives of stealth jihad, exactly as it was the objective of communists and anarchists: to destroy the foundations of their country so it could be replaced with their fanciful government, be it communism, anarchism, or sharia.
voegelinian says
” From what I understand they have been fighting against the Syrian government and not the Australian government.”

Jolly good job, old boy!
Muhammad Bear says
Well, I understand it well enough to know that when the Obama Administration was caught out supplying weapons to Al Qaeda following Benghazi that Al Qaeda needed a rebrand: ISIS.
I also understand it well enough to know that Al Qaeda was initially established by the CIA and implemented by Obama’s adviser, Zbignew Brezinski, and that Al Qaeda was originally a CIA code word for Mujahideen.
I understand it well enough to know that Syria needs to be removed before any attack on Iran can proceed. Syria has enough short range missiles to overwhelm the Israeli Iron Shield defense allowing Iran’s long range weapons to get through.
I understand it well enough to know that ISIS is being armed and financed by the Obama Administration.
And this means that I have to give up my rights?
I suggest that you sharpen your mental pencil.

I maintain that the West must come to the realization that the Islamic ideology which a Muslim ipso facto pledges allegiance to renders that Muslim logically and legally incapable of acquiring citizenship of any non-Islamic polity in the first place — and rather only enables him two options: 1) to overtly reject that citizenship through a frank hostility tantamount to a declaration of war against that polity; or 2) to feign assimilation and thereby to acquire the technically official, albeit superficial trappings of citizenship in order to wage stealth jihad against that polity (and by logical extension, through the logic of jihad, against all non-Muslim polities on Earth) through that false assimilation.
I.e., the Muslims upon whom various Western polities over the years (yea, decades) have — disastrously, through a colossal ignorance of Islam demonstrating a tragicomic dereliction of civic duty — conferred citizenship are not, and never were, actual citizens. And so, there is nothing there to “strip”, other than a superficial varnish of taqiyya — along with our suicidally ridiculous PC MC paradigm that continues to obscure our vision from seeing this larger picture of a global train wreck slowly but surely spiralling out of control as we diddle with our piddly dicks with our pants down and toilet paper hanging out of our collective asses.

The problem is pretty clear to Tony, but the real solution of ‘banning Islam’ is going to take time & will only occur when the ‘anti Islam parties’ gain more popularity. I dont know how many more beheadings, burnings, bombing or attacks it will take for Australia & the West to wake up, but hopefully its bloody soon!

I agree with you. Unfortunately, there are many in politics here in Australia and in our “enemedia” who are trying very hard to get rid of T Abbott. I do hope that they will not succeed and that the PM succeeds in his work in this area. There are too many people who are trying to side-track his efforts by maligning him for many things. Go Tony!

Good for Australia! I wish our so-called ‘leaders’ had even a shred of such courage. Actually, he may like to consider just simply stripping their passports and sending them back to whence they came! Of course, ‘the EUSSR would not permit us to do the same’, or so the Quisling, capitulating excuse goes. Until we accept that islam is at war with us all and until islam is proscribed as an illegal(cult) organisation, these outrages, rapes, murders will continue to accelerate like an evil 7th century virus, consuming civilisation until we are all back in the medieval dark ages (those of us that survive to enjoy slavery under the mohammedans)

Richthofen,
You got that right. People should realize that government, the bigger the worse, is the problem and not the solution.
Recall how NATO and the US bombed the Bosnian Serbs into submission when the Muslim militias attacked them;
Recall how the EU declares any interference with open borders to be illegal;
Recall how the International Court of Justice prevents the deportation of violent Muslim immigrants;
Recall the British banning of critics of Islam and the jailing of domestic critics of Islam;
Recall that the only plane allowed to fly in the United States just after 9/11 was carrying bin Laden relatives back to Saudi Arabia after cursory questioning by the FBI. Recall the many business dealings involving huge sums of money by the Bushes with Saudi Arabian princes;
In other words, in free countries, government works from the bottom up. The more unwarranted powers you give the government, the more difficult it will be to ultimately recreate a free society. Most emergency powers given for security reasons to a government are necessitated by bungling of the government in the first place. It’s like rewarding an alcoholic on a binge with yet more whiskey.

I cheer Mr. Abbott in his efforts to counter the Jihadis. I really like his statement, ‘We cannot allow bad people to use our good nature against us.’ Thank you for saying this. Civilized people do not engage in savage behaviour and as a consequence are helpless against it unless the government steps in. This is Mr. Abbott stepping in on behalf of not only the Australians, but the rest of us.
He is saying that he will take away their citizenship. But does that mean that they can still live in Australia or that they will be thrown out of the country?
I believe that he also the the alternative of imposing very long prison sentences on these people.

As an Australian, and a lifelong Conservative, it grieves me to say that Tony Abbott is being universally vilified within Australia, particularly for his stand against Islamic terrorism, to the extent that he will, quite possibly, only serve one term as Prime Minister of Australia. The alternate Prime Minister, Labor leader Bill Shorten, has no problem at all with unrestricted immigration from Islamic countries – and why should he when Muslims in Australia vote 90% plus for the Labor Party, and Muslim women have lots of babies, nearly all of whom will grow up to be lifelong Labor supporters. Muslim immigration is the gift that keeps on giving, so far as Labor is concerned.

Kudos to Mr.Abbot who is the only so-called leader to have the guts to call spade a spade . He reminds me of Winston Churchil whereas Barack and David of UK remind me of Nevil Chamberlin . Long live Australia and Long live Mr. Abbot! I am sure that his recent speech will go down in the history as one of the great speeches like that of Winston Churchill’s during the second world war.

Well said everyone. It is time that the Western/Christian world woke up fully to the Islamist threat. They can no longer be considered immigrants, but more realistically they are trying to populate the world with their twisted and evil form of religion. As well as not mixing in with the countries population they form no-go areas that are dangerous to enter.
If they do not like the new country they are in, they SHOULD go home.
