Lebanon: Top Sunni authority files judicial complaint against satirist for defaming Islam

Feb 24, 2015 11:50 am By Robert Spencer

Charbel KhalilApparently mocking the Islamic State is, for these Lebanese Sunni clerics, defaming Islam — a telling admission in itself. In any case, the increasingly frequent calls for self-censorship from Barack Obama and the Leftist elites are in service of this: the enforcement of Sharia blasphemy laws. If the current regime gets its way, those laws are coming to the U.S., and with the demonization of foes of jihad terror, in effect they’re already here.

“Lebanese satirist in hot water over claims he defamed Islam,” Associated Press, February 23, 2015:

BEIRUT — A Lebanese satirist appeared before a prosecutor in Beirut on Monday, after the country’s top Sunni religious authority filed a judicial complaint against him for allegedly defaming Islam.

Charbel Khalil found himself in hot water after he shared a photo on social media last week that was perceived by some as insulting to Islam.

The photo shows a woman wearing a short dress under a black robe, sitting on a black bed-cover with the Islamic slogan “There is no God but God and Muhammad is his Prophet” on it in white Arabic letters. The cover resembled the banner of the extremist Islamic State group, which has seized large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria.

The photo was accompanied by the words: “sexual jihad under the Prophet’s umbrella??”

Khalil appeared before prosecutor Nada Asmar on Monday. A group of supporters, including Lebanese artists and colleagues, protested outside the judicial palace, some carrying banners that read “Je suis Charbel.”

The phrase “Je suis Charlie” — or I am Charlie — has been adopted by supporters of freedom of speech after last month’s murderous spree in Paris at the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which had lampooned Islam and other religions.

Khalil directs the comedy program “Basmat Watan,” which in Arabic means “a nation’s smiles.” The program pokes fun at politicians of all stripes. In 2006, Khalil spoofed Hezbollah’s leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, sparking street demonstrations by supporters of the Shiite militant group’s leader who burned car tires and blocked roads in protest.

Khalil on Monday told reporters that the photo he shared on Twitter meant to shine a light on the harm being done by IS militants to Islam.

“The free judiciary has triumphed today,” he said, after he was let go by the investigating judge.

The case, however, was referred to an appeals court and Khalil was banned from traveling pending an investigation.

The complicated Lebanese Politics… Charbel Khalil is a Christian, unfortunately one of the followers of turncoat General Michel Aoun, currently allied with Hizballah (was their enemy a few years ago). His satire is directed today against Sunnis, totally ignoring Shiaa, as part of a political war Aoun is waging against those opposing his presidential bid, mainly the Christian Extreme Rightwing “Lebanese Forces party” and their “semi-liberal” Sunnis allies followers of the Hariri movement.. In Lebanon the Christians who once created this country and who are barely 40% today after they were abandoned by the west to fight a civil war against Muslims (Syrian, Palestinian, and Islamic mercenaries from all over the world) 1975-1990, find themselves in defacto alliances with local Muslim forces. However, in Lebanon 90% of the Shiaa population follow the most radical Shiaa party in existence, Hezbollah, while about 80% of Sunnis follow one of the “most liberal”l Sunni movement in history, Hariri’s Future movement. Lebanon is a very interesting case to be studied, Lebanon was a country created by the Only FREE christians in the Middle East, The Maronite Catholics who refused to live under any sort of Islamic law or even influence, contrary to other Middle East Christians who developed the Stockholm Syndrome and became Dhimmis by Excellence!

The free judiciary let him go, but the Sharia judiciary will not.

Islam allows one-way mockery only, since Islam is a supremacist political ideology.

It would appear that Khalid’s main beef would be that IS ’embarrasses islam’.

Hardly the sort of person we should embrace as either an apostate, or a counter-jihadist.

In fact, I would characterise this sort of nonsense as merely an example of mohammedans, who possess a modicum of self awareness, inculcated by prooximity to Western values, attempting to whitewash islam, in the hope we will swallow their metetricious bullshit.

When people like Khalid actually do something , or say something, that actually endangers their own precious hides; that’s when I might finally believe in their windy, self aggrandizing rhetoric.

I have more respectfor the SA bloke who purportedly toreup the koranonfacebook.

lol that’s a beautiful story. Well Britain and France, here is your future. Just a short time ago, not 100s of years ago, but like 40? Beirut was called the PARIS of the Middle East. Prophetic, no?

In 1976, the commander of the unified Christian Forces, Bashir Gemayel after being abandoned by the West said in several interviews and speeches, “One day, the West will come to ask for our advice on how to face them.”

Yes, Beirut under Christian rule was the Paris of the Middle East, the same Beirut under Muslim rule became another Kabul… and this will be fate of every city/nation when Muslim demographics take over.

Here’s a conundrum for Barack Hussein Obama. Apparently mocking the Islamic State is, for these Lebanese Sunni clerics, defaming Islam — a telling admission in itself. Charbel Khalil a Lebanese satirist appeared before a prosecutor in Beirut on Monday, Mocking Islamic State is defaming Islam; mocking Islamic State wich has nothing to do with Islam is defaming Islam!? I say it’s pretty obvious in the name Islamic State. WUWT?
