Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Robert Spencer in PJ Media: Iowa Has Spoken: Islam Is Peaceful

Feb 11, 2015 7:47 pm By Robert Spencer

quran2In PJ Media I discuss a new poll that shows how effective counterfactual propaganda can be:

A new poll has shown that a majority of Republicans and an overwhelming percentage of Democrats who are likely participants in the Iowa presidential caucuses think Islam is peaceful. Now if we could ship them over to the Islamic State, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Thailand, the Philippines and a few other hot spots, they could work on convincing the people who seem to have the hardest time grasping this point: Islamic jihadists.

The Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll was conducted during the last week of January by Selzer & Co. of West Des Moines. Pollsters asked 402 Republicans and 401 Democrats which one of these two statements more closely reflected their own views: “Islam is an inherently violent religion, which leads its followers to violent acts,” or “Islam is an inherently peaceful religion, but there are some who twist its teachings to justify violence.”

Fifty-three percent of the Republicans and eighty-one percent of the Democrats chose the second option. Thirty-nine percent of the Republicans and thirteen percent of the Democrats said that they thought Islam was violent, with the remaining eight percent of the Republicans and six percent of the Democrats apparently not sure why they were being asked about Cat Stevens.

This shows the effectiveness of the constant barrage of media propaganda, the never-ending avalanche of articles and learned talking heads assuring us that when we see Muslims brandishing Qur’ans and screaming “Allahu akbar” as they kill infidels, it doesn’t really have anything to do with Islam. Fifty-three percent of Republicans and 81% of Democrats have been brainwashed to deny what is painfully obvious. The religion whose holy book says “slay them wherever you find them” three times (2:191; 4:89; 9:5) and calls upon believers to wage war against and subjugate members of what are commonly known as the other two great Abrahamic faiths (9:29), and that exhorts believers to behead unbelievers (47:4) is peaceful. Iowa has spoken.

What’s that? The Jewish scriptures contain some violent bits, and therefore Islam is no more violent than Judaism or Christianity? Well, in fact, neither the Jewish nor Christian scriptures have any open-ended and universal calls to believers to wage war against and subjugate unbelievers comparable to Qur’an 9:29, and both Jewish and Christian traditions have mainstream interpretations of violent passages that reject literalism, while literalism is mainstream in Islamic tradition. Nonetheless, the invoking of supposedly comparable passages of the Bible to dismiss concerns about violent exhortations in the Qur’an has become commonplace in the public discourse – which shows how much the public discourse today has become indifferent to inconvenient facts.

Before the triumph of the politically correct ethos, this wasn’t even a controversial point. Majid Khadduri was an Iraqi scholar of Islamic law of international renown. In his book War and Peace in the Law of Islam, which was published in 1955 and remains one of the most lucid and illuminating works on the subject, Khadduri says this about jihad:

The state which is regarded as the instrument for universalizing a certain religion must perforce be an ever expanding state. The Islamic state, whose principal function was to put God’s law into practice, sought to establish Islam as the dominant reigning ideology over the entire world….The jihad was therefore employed as an instrument for both the universalization of religion and the establishment of an imperial world state. (P. 51)

Assuming the results are not made up (and a majority of 3 per cent is hardly something to write home about, unless one’s parents are easily pleased), it’s very telling that the ‘peaceful’ answer has a built-in get-out-of-jail-card for Islam’s profoundly violent nature.

I wonder what will it take, if ever, for America to wake up to Islam. In theory, I understand the reluctance of Americans to view Islam as dangerous. In reality, I don’t understand the total blindness to Islam while Muslims are killing everybody all over the world. I bet that much ignorance in the face of daily evidence has never happened in the history of mankind. Very strange. God help us!

Obama’s core support group continues to believe that global warming is our greatest threat. This “blame others” group what scares me. This group seems to be near 40% of our population and there is another 10% on the fence that could go either way. I think B.O.’s supporters are ignorant or biased and will never seek the truth. Even when they see something horrible happen in this country, in front of their very own eyes, they are most likely to blame Repubs for what ever horror they see. Even now, Obama scheme’s a 3 year losing war with ISIS for his supporters to blame on Republicans. (I hope the “not too bright” Repubs don’t take his bait.) Obama’s “blame everyone” crowd only want to blame others for everything bad in their lives. Hate and blame is their game.

Folks, I am an Iowan. All my friends and family (including myself) feel that islam, as a whole, is completely violent against the “unbeliever” and those believers who aren’t muslim enough. We feel that islam can NOT be reformed and that there are NO moderate muslims or extreem muslims. There are just muslims. And that islam should be de-classified as a religion because it resembles a cult more than it does a religion.

This pole was fixed and does not truely reflect the way Iowa voters feel about islam.

Public perception will only change if we involve the People.

The Constitution wisely gave us Referendums to take issues to the People to allow the People to make informed decisions.

We need people to debate on the Constitutionality of Sharia and even Islam in One Nation Under God.

The questions to debate is whether religion and politics are constitutionally separated. In other words, is Sharia permitted to become part of the consideration of justice? Christianity is founded on love for your neighbor and that notion finds its way into our Courts in a subtle way. However, the Ten Commandments are not part of the Constitution. Why then should Sharia be defended by the Constitution? A law that is based on inequality for men and directly opposite to the notion that it is self evident that all men are created equal cannot possibly be consistent with the Constitution and should be banned.

That is the explanation that the People need to debate . . . and soon.

If we dont do this, we will be beating our heads against a lot of walls.

We must involve the People if we want the People to understand that Islam is a coercive movement.

From the article – “Thirty-nine percent of the Republicans and thirteen percent of the Democrats said that they thought Islam was violent.”

    Well, it’s a start.

Keep soldiering on, guys and gals: because *if* this sample reflects the state of affairs among the two major parties in the USA, then you need to convince another twelve to thirteen percent of the Republicans in order to get them to the point where the majority view reflects reality.

It may well be easiest to work on the eight percent of Republican “fence-sitters/ “unsures”; that would get you to 47 percent, and then you only have to persuade some of the brainwashed over the line, to get a majority. Persuade the six percent of Democrat fence-sitters to come round to the “Islam is violent” position, and that would make 19 percent of Democrats. Add 19 to 47 and you’ve got 65 percent, both parties together.

Something else I would point out: those people who *have* worked out – probably for themselves – that Islam *is*, as Jacques Ellul put it, “fundamentally warlike”, are unlikely to change their minds. They have woken up, recognised a clear and present danger, to the nation and indeed to human civilisation in general. I would say that that 39 percent of Republicans, and that 13 percent of Democrats, who *agree* that Islam is inherently violent (and, therefore, presumably, regard it as dangerous), adding up to 52 percent of Americans, are very, very important. Because they represent people who have *resisted* the massive petrodollar funded Muslim propaganda that’s been going on ever-more-loudly and pervasively since the 1950s. Who have *not* been fooled. They’re the smart ones.

I have heard it said that in order to swing something, all you need is a committed and focused ten percent. Well: these figures tell us that the Islamosavvy constitute more than ten percent, *even* among the Democrats.

Yes, the currently-brainwashe are in the majority, but…how committed are they? Some would be; but many would be just ‘going with the flow’. I’d hazard a guess that the *un*-brainwashed, the Islamosavvy, are more focused, more committed, better informed and more independent-minded than those who blithely agreed with the idea that Islam is peaceful but just has a few unrepresentative bad apples.

So: don’t give up. Reread your copies of Citizen Warrior’s “Getting Through” and keep at it. You don’t have to persuade *everyone*; you’re aiming at the fence-sitters, because if you can get *them* to wake up, then you’ve got the numbers.

Also, don’t be discouraged if a particular person seems indifferent or rejects what you say. Because you don’t know when something you’ve said will come back to them, maybe days, weeks, months, even a few *years* later, and that little light will switch on.

Someone at the church I attend recently came up to me and confessed that when, some years ago, they read an article about Islam that I’d written for the parish magazine, they had been totally disbelieving; they’d thought I was exaggerating, “drawing the long bow”. But now…now..in the wake of events in Paris and in Sydney….they wanted to tell me that they thought I was *right*. That they believed me.

WHAT A STRANGE WAY TO PRESENT THE QUESTION. Selzer & Co – Please explain your logic.

Which one of these two statements more closely reflects your own views:
“Islam is an inherently violent religion, which leads its followers to violent acts,”
    or
“Islam is an inherently peaceful religion, but there are some who twist its teachings to justify violence.”

Where do these people get their news, their information? How could any American believe that islam is peaceful when muslims are killing hundreds of people every day in the name of islam?! I am through with idiots who refuse to see the truth or willfully deny it. I know that truth is the new hate speech but I don’t give a damn; I intend to tell it to everyone who will listen. They can snicker behind my back, tell me I’m a bigot, racist, islamophobe, walk away in disgust, or whatever they choose to do. But I believe it is my duty to inform the ignorant and some day my words will make an impact. I only hope it won’t be too late.
Sometimes I am encouraged by what I’m hearing on some of the conservative talk shows because they’re not beating around the bush with ‘radical islam’, or ‘moderate muslims’; they’re actually telling it like it is. But the islam-loving Obama administration still refuses to acknowledge violent islam and that is so dishonest but Obama is a pathological liar, or what should I expect? Why, why, why? I just don’t understand why we cannot name our enemy and our enemy is islam.

I have a friend, a former teacher, who heard a Muslim on TV explain that Islam was peaceful and said that ISIS was not representative of Islam. I told her that I had read the Qur’an and that Muslim lied which they were known to do. The next day I gave her the names of former Muslims who wrote books that explained Islam. She wasn’t interested. She thought that I was being too much of a zealot on the issue. Thus, the ignorance persists.

Quite frankly, I once thought Islam was peaceful too but the horrible acts that were being committed in the name of Islam were so numerous and yet so similar in many ways that the peaceful narrative didn’t fit the evidence. That made me want to learn more about Islam. The more I read, including the Qur’an, the more I realized that Muslims were lying to us. Islam is not nor has it ever been a religion of peace. Education is the only way that we can get people to see the truth. Unfortunately, too many people have not interest in learning the truth.

But people don’t want to hear it because they’ve been taught to associate any kind of criticism of Islam as bigotry a long with they’ve bought into the warm feely version of the world libs love to cling to that everyone is good and only a very small handful of people are bad (and they’re all white), so they get auto-defensive when you tell them to check their own opinions with facts. The truth is too terrifying. It’s going to take more and more of this horror to make more of the willingly ignorant to face the music.

Don’t give up on your friend. Just give her some space, now, to chew over what you said. Try to stay cool (this is something I myself have *huge* difficulty doing; it is so hard to do, when you want to scream and grab them and shake them awake, because the danger is so real, and so huge, and so awful, you can see that train coming down the track and the person you’re trying to warn is just sitting in the middle of the railway track blinking at you and saying “train? what train?”). Wait a bit. Maybe next time – in a week, a month, a year, two years – some piece of flagrant Muslim mayhem happens she’ll *remember* what you said, and something will go “click* inside her head.

Regrettably, your teacher friend probably is very illustrative of the mindset of many. As she is a teacher, I’m guessing that she’s a progressive, or at least would not describe herself as conservative or (shudder) Republican.

One book I found very useful, and in fact was what got me really interested in Islam and its beliefs and practices is the incomparable “A God Who Hates” by Wafa Sultan. The title is catchy. a real plus. It’s the story of a woman whose father was assassinated by the Israeli intelligence services and named a martyr by none other than Gamal Abdel Nasser. Her accounts of living as a woman under sharia and of how women are constantly reminded of their inferiority doesn’t (if I recall) mention Quranic texts, but powerfully shows their effects. I recommend it as an excellent primer on Islam and its real-world results on individual human beings.

I actually sent a copy the a minister whose church had its outside bulletin board give a shout-out to Muslims for the feast of al-Fitr. He did read it. I don’t know if it changed his mind; a preconception is a terrible thing to lose. But if you want a relatively painless and actually engaging way to show how Islam affects real people, A God Who Hates is a good way to make the introduction.

I think the propensity of people to try to look the least ‘racist’ as possible in our culture (this isn’t found in India for example, they’re more outspoken about their opinions of others), because we’ve been so conditioned to know that we can’t ever say anything that even remotely could be construed as “wrong” because the consequences can be devastating, so we’ll pick the softer option when pressed by a stranger. I would bet if you asked these people in a comfortable setting with people they trust, way more would pick option #1.

It should be remembered that today’s Islamic scholars (who are called Maulavis) completely misunderstand jihad and misrepresent it to the general public. The public’s violent instincts are inflamed as a result and they are stripped of all noble human virtues. This is in fact what has happened. I know for certain that Muslim Clergies who persist in propagating these blood-spattered doctrines are in fact responsible for murders committed by ignorant, egotistical people who know nothing of why Islam was forced to fight battles in its early history. They should remember that their understanding of jihad is not at all correct, and that human sympathy is its first casualty. Those who possess sight, read the ahadith and ponder over the Holy Qur’an should understand well that the kind of jihad practiced by many of today’s barbaric people is not Islamic jihad. Rather, these misguided activities that have spread amongst the Muslims are instigated by nafse-‘ ammarah (self that incites to evil) or by a crude desire for Paradise. May God bring these ignorant Muslim Clergies back to the right path. They have misled the populace into believing that the keys to Paradise lie in beliefs that are oppressive, cruel and completely immoral. Can it be a good deed to shoot a complete stranger, intending to kill him while he is absorbed in thought? Is this religiousness? If these are acts of any virtue then animals are more virtuous than human beings.

Although ignorant Muslim Clergies have instructed the ordinary public in plunder and killing by calling these actions jihad, Christian clerigies have also done something similar. They have produced thousands of publications, journals and flyers alleging that Islam was spread by the sword. This literature, which has been distributed by wrongly claims that Islam is synonymous with violence.

The Christian priests have embarked on a very dangerous course of action. On one side, they falsely argue that the Qur’an summons Muslims to jihad at all times and occasions, as if seeking to draw attention towards this tradition. And then they incite the Muslims’ passion with provacative literature. It is unclear why these people naïvely fail to recognise that these actions can combine to produce dangerous consequences. I have written repeatedly that jihad is certainly not a Qur’anic commandment. The truth of the matter is simply that some of Islam’s early opponents wanted to forcibly restrain or rather annihilate it. Islam raised the sword against them only in selfdefense. This permission was for specified circumstances and not forever. Islam is not responsible for the erroneous or self-serving actions of the monarchies that came after the time of the Prophet (sa).

Anyone who raises the issue of jihad to deceive ignorant Muslims in fact wants to promote this poisonous habit. It would have been better if Christian clerics, upon duly examining history, had emphasised that there is no doctrine of such jihad in Islam, and that there is no injunction to convert people to Islam by force. The Holy Qur’an is the book that contains the following verse:(al- Baqarah, 2:257),This means that there should be no compulsion in matters of religion. Can we conclude that such a book teaches warfare? What complaint can we lodge against Muslim Clergies when the Christian clergies have also failed to adopt the path of truth, which would have been beneficial in promoting the policies of the government.

The people’s penchant for violence has increased as a result of the combined testimony of the Muslim and Christian clerics. it is essential that our government prohibit them. (Ruhanikhazain)

There will be an evolutionary process, which has been repeated in past centuries, wherein the vast majority of people deny or minimize a nascent evil, until it’s reached a ‘break-out threshold,’ to borrow a term relative to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. In this case it’s due to political correctness and the thoroughly misinformed notion that all polities and government structures are morally equivalent. We can thank our public ‘education’ system for that.
In the interim we will begin seeing periodic attacks on US soil, similar or worse than the Boston bombing, which are notoriously difficult to prevent, short of establishing martial law. Parts of Europe are suffering from what amounts to civic internal bleeding as they have ignorantly allowed the jihadists to establish separate enclaves within their nations–what might be called ‘wakeful cells’ as opposed to sleeper cells.
Although we can be thankful for people like Mr. Spencer, who tirelessly educate the masses, and for those like us who submit letters to the editor to get the word out, it’s going to be a long slog, with many casualties. Here is a link to a letter I wrote that was published last week in the Colorado Springs paper:
