“Raees Qazi made a living by selling bicycles on Craigslist, buying and selling goods at the Swap Shop flea market and doing maintenance work at a local mosque.” Watch for mosque leaders to say they hardly knew him, that he never attended prayers, that sometimes he would shout “extremist” statements and the brothers would gently remonstrate with him that he was behaving in an un-Islamic fashion, etc.
“Brothers from Oakland Park expected to plead guilty to NYC terror plot,” by Paula McMahon, Sun Sentinel, March 12, 2015:
Two brothers from Oakland Park are expected to plead guilty to federal terrorism charges today in a case that accuses them of plotting a terrorist attack on landmarks in New York City and assaulting two deputy U.S. Marshals while in custody.
Raees Alam Qazi, 22, and Sheheryar Alam Qazi, 32, are due to appear in federal court in Miami for the change-of-plea hearing.
The two were arrested in November 2012 after Raees Qazi returned after spending a few days bicycling around Manhattan scoping out potential targets that would result in mass casualties, according to the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Sheheryar Qazi knew what his brother planned to do and provided financial and practical support, authorities said.
The plot only made it to the planning stages, though investigators said they found bomb-making materials and components at the Qazi family’s apartment in Oakland Park. Investigators said the younger brother also consulted an al-Qaida article called “Make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom.”
The men, who have been locked up without bond since their arrests, were also charged with assaulting two federal marshals while they were being moved in April at the federal courthouse complex in downtown Miami.
Authorities said the brothers distracted the guards by simultaneously looking up and then punched and fought with the marshals while yelling out “God is Great” in Arabic….
