“Sympathetic Students in Support of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria” — why not? As everyone knows, poverty causes terrorism, so sending them money will stop it, right? This is an appalling video, but even more appalling is the the fact that the Project Veritas people pitched this pro-Islamic State club in terms that coincided perfectly with prevailing dogmas that everyone at Barry no doubt takes for granted as axiomatically true — particularly the myth that poverty causes terrorism.
Note the weaselly language from the administrator about how “technically we’re at war with the Islamic State,” as constituting a possible obstacle the club might encounter in trying to aid the Islamic State.
“Catholic university officials caught on secret video approving student club devoted to raising money for ISIS, saying: ‘We’re here to get that done,'” by David Martosko, Daily Mail, March 30, 2015 (thanks to Anne Crockett):
Administrators at a Catholic university in Florida agreed to help an honors student start a campus club that would send money and supplies to the ISIS terror army.
Hidden camera footage released Monday morning shows officials and faculty at Barry University advising a senior โ identified only as ‘Laura’ โ about the best way to secure funding for a club she called ‘Sympathetic Students in Support of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.’
‘I want to start fundraising efforts on campus, and what I want to do is raise funds to send overseas,’ she told Derek Bley, the school’s Coordinator for Leadership Development and Student Organizations.
Bley offered to help her create the organization and agreed with her request to ‘pass out Islamic State flags and educate people’ at an annual student ‘Festival of Nations’ fair.
The video is from Project Veritas, a conservative ‘guerilla film-making group’ that last week captured a Cornell University dean agreeing that ISIS and Hamas would be welcome at the Ivy League school.
The Barry professor in charge of the undergraduate honors program agreed to serve as the pro-ISIS group’s faculty advisor after hearing that its mission would include ‘raising money and sending it to the Islamic State’
Barry University, based in Miami Shores, has received more than $112 million in federal grants and contracts, and another $109 million from Florida taxpayers since 2000, Project Veritas said Monday, citing figures from OpenTheBooks.com.
It also once received tuition money from retired NBA great Shaquille O’Neal, who graduated in 2012 with a doctorate in Education. His final ‘capstone project’ โ a load-lightened version of a doctoral dissertation โ focused on ‘humor and seriousness in leadership styles,’ according to the Miami New Times.
The school’s mission statement says ‘all members of our community’ must ‘accept social responsibility to foster peace and nonviolence.’
Yet Bley was enthusiastic about Laura’s terror-funding venture. ‘We’re not here to limit people and their clubs, he said. ‘If there a demand or a need, or an interest that students have to do this, we’re here to support that.’
‘If you’ve got … people who are interested, and this is something you want take and run with,’ he added. ‘we’re here to help you get that done.’…

Not beneficial for ANYONE living in the Middle East or anywhere else. We need a global revolution. This stupidity continues because we don’t react in an effective way. We need protesters on the streets weekly with placards and bull horns; a website; systems and procedures to take action and gain in numbers from the public and attention from elected officials.
TH says
If I were the bishop of that place I would call in the President of that Uni and would threaten them with withdrawing CAtholic identity from such a uni. That would mean that the Catholic alumni who support it would begin to think twice about giving their cash to such a sham of a supposed Catholic University. I would also send the tape to the Nunciature and to Rome. They need to be hit where it counts, which unfortunatley is not Catholic faith and moral teaching, but the pocketbood. The bishop is in charge of everything Catholic in his dioces. He could send in investigators and if he proves that it is no longer Catholic, as many of them aren’t, then he ought to publicly declare that it is no longer Catholic. Unfortunatley most bishops are wimpy and are afraid of controversy. The smart thing to do is to proceed on such a matter on an occasion when the media is busy with other issues.
Peggy says
Why are Christians so afraid of controversy? They are not. Why do we have to give in to them? I don’t care if they call me racist or hateful or islamophobic. That is a label someone else chooses to give me and I could choose to give them a worse one. Why does their opinion county more than mine?
We better stand up to them and if they call us names we can hit right back with a few choice names we have for them.

The Catholic Church has never been on the side of poor and oppressed people it claims to be on the side of. No love of Catholicism here. We have been Protestants in my family for centuries. In France my relatives had to register as Protestant in then Catholic France. It is our fault to let it get to this stage, it is bad as it is, really bad.

The video would be a lot stronger if they weren’t just dealing with clueless officials and faculty who didn’t appear very bright in the first place. These people didn’t appear to be very strong one way or another. They seemed to just want to appear to be doing their job without putting too much work into it. It’s hard to read evil intent into people who obviously simply want to coast along and don’t care one way or another what happens, as long as they can draw a check and go home by 5.
I guess the real question is whether universities serve any public function whatsoever. Does a degree mean anything at all nowadays, except that the student was able to sit more or less in one place for 4 years? Unquestionably, schools of science, engineering and applied fields such as agriculture provide the most value for students and taxpayers. Other than that, the question is, do the benefits of a degree justify the behemoth budgets and the routine impoverishment of students that is the price for providing these certificates of attendance?
Wellington says
Your first paragraph, RonaldB, reminded me of Hannah Arendt’s statement about the banality of evil. Your second paragraph goes to the heart of what I’ve been asserting for many years now and that is, with few exceptions, majoring anymore in the humanities or education is a waste of time and money. In fact, it can actually prove injurious to one’s overall mental condition, since indoctrination rather than true education is now the norm. Far better to go into engineering, science, agriculture or business, though I might add that the sciences have also started to be ruined by pc/mc.
voegelinian says
The Humanities in Academe as a whole are not as thoroughly corrupted as Wellington implies; it depends on the course, the topic, the professor, the department, the school; and so forth. If one takes any courses that are part of MESA (Middle East Studies Association), for example, one would be likely to be indoctrinated in pro-Islamic PC MC drivel (and worse, if the professor is Muslim). But courses in ancient history or medieval history are not likely to be so bad (with the exception of any courses dealing in matters that pertain to Islamic history), or in comparative literature (when not indulging in “Feminist Narratives” or Cornel West/Maya Angelou propaganda, and the like), or the history of art, or the history of philosophy, etc. (One program at the university I went to was called “History of Ideas” and had quite a few fine courses and teachers.)
Sure, there will always be the overarching backdrop to any academic course these days of the Twin First Commandment of PC MC: Self-flagellating self-criticism of the West / Irrational Respect for the “Other”, and if any course themes veer too closely into that territory, they will likely be tainted, to different degrees and in different ways (cf. the second clause of my first sentence in my first paragraph above). But I don’t think it’s as gloomy as some think.
Wellington says
Nice to see you more optimistic than I am, voegelinian. However, having spent a third of a century in education, one year as a graduate assistant in history, three years teaching history at the high school level, and twenty-nine years teaching history at the college level, what I noticed most glaringly over this third of a century was a massive decrease in historical knowledge among students (and in related knowledge areas like geography and economics). It was hard not to be pessimistic about this dismal reality.
By the time I left the teaching profession, young people who came into my classes, as intelligent as ever of course, knew virtually nothing of the past. I had to start from scratch——AND disabuse the little dears of an almost entirely negative view of the West. Though they knew little of Western history, the majority of them at least knew that it was the most terrible civilization that had ever existed. They also, speaking in the aggregate, couldn’t write nearly as well as when I first entered the education profession (so, by default, I had to become an English writing teacher as well).
To the extent that any history pre-1500 is taught anymore (and it really isn’t at all pre-college), it is riddled with pc/mc about such things as women’s rights and all the horrible homophobia going on in past centuries (but, to be sure, the medieval Islamic world was a hotbed of advanced thinking and tremendos tolerance). Ditto for post-1500 history. Basic courses with an overarching narrative within a chronological framework and taught with at least some objectivity are almost gone now at any level of education.. For instance, the required Western Civilization course I taught at the small college where I was on the faculty has been done away with, as has any history requirement. This has been repeated at one college or university after another, as another example, Northwestern University, which a few years ago did away with any history requirement but installed a course on diversity which every student, regardless of major, had to take.
In short, voegelinian, it’s worse than you realize. As a final example to illustrate my point here, shortly before I retired I had to take a leave of absence for medical reasons. While I was gone the substitute the college got for me assigned books trashing Western Civilization and actually said in class that the Middle Ages weren’t really worth studying because “nothing much happened.” She had a PhD in history.
Oh yeah, it is indeed worse than you realize, voegelinian. I could have written far, far more than I did about the descent of proper historical knowledge at ALL levels of education in America. Yes, far more. It is an ongoing tragedy and, once again, Islam is poised to advance itself because ignorance reigns elsewhere.

And I completely agree that the clueless faculty at Barry University doesn’t give a shit…”fill out these forms, get an advisor, and you’re good to go. We don’t care that your cause supports terrorists that murder in unspeakable fashion. Since you are only asking for flashlights, pens, pencils , paper for widowed mothers and their children, how can this NOT be deemed as a humanitarian crusade? Now, if you asked for weapons, passports to Syria, and a suicide vest, we would require you to obtain TWO faculty signatures to oversee your project.”
Fucked up…

Yes. I’d never heard of this “Project Veritas” before, but this sting op is well executed and slickly produced. I went to their website and they have many other projects they’ve done, most of them dealing with “conservative” issues unrelated to Islam (e.g., border patrol, Obamacare, the Al Sharpton scandal). One other sting op they did apparently had enormous consequences, but I had never heard about it before. They exposed the Leftist bias of NPR (a public funded national radio network based in the U.S.A.):
http://projectveritas.com/our-work/bias-national-public-radio
According to the Veritas page on this, the result of their embarrassing sting op included the following:
Vivian Schiller, president and CEO of NPR resigned.
Ron Schiller, vice president for development at NPR resigned.
Congress voted to defund NPR.
voegelinian says
I meant to add that this NPR sting op involved someone posing as a spokesman of a fictitious Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated group, offering a 5 million $$ donation to NPR. I haven’t watched it yet, but their brief description says:
With cameras rolling, the high-level NPR executive called Republicans and the Tea Party as “white, middle-America gun-toting” and โseriously racist, racist people.โ

This is exactly why I left the Catholic church many years ago. I read their doctrine, saw their actions. They are no longer the true church of JESUS CHRIST.
I saw the light and was saved.
Jay Boo says
What is the point you are trying to make here Joseph in reference to Catholic doctrine?
You suggest that Catholic doctrine is directly related to appeasement to Islam.
You could have cited the current Pope’s behavior or even some Second Vatican Council documents.
The way you phrased that though, seems to suggest that Catholicism itself is totally corrupted in contrast to your church which you did not mention.
Jay Boo says
Joseph since you did not capitalize (church) I assume that you did not mean The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons).
Joseph says
What I’m trying to say is that as in the times of JESUS, the Jews were hung up on the letter of the law and traditions. JESUS told them they were “white sepulchers” clean on the outside and full of death on the inside.
This is not against the people of the church, it is against the leaders.
One Sunday we were informed that a Muslim was going to be speaking to us next Sunday about Islam and how we are brothers. For a Muslim to spew his lies in GOD’S house was too much for me.
Catholics and Islam do not mix. They are diametrically opposed.
Yes Jay Boo I do believe that many of the leaders of the church are leading their flock down the wrong path. They are trying to send a message but I believe it is the wrong one.
On hindsight maybe I should have come back the next Sunday and stood up for the truth. This was back in 2004 and I admit I was very weak on the subject back then. That Muslim speaker would have blown me clear out of the water and I would have done more damage than good.
Do I believe that if you are Catholic that you are going to hell?? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Costco “night vision” flashlights? LOL! What a line, and the advisors didn’t seem to be listening. You could start a pork belly club to provide pork donations to Iran on this campus.
This video was hilarious and simultaneously frightening.
How did these “advisors” become adults without a sense of being Americans? They seem to be just as unaware of their responsibility as a citizen as they are of ISIS objectives. Their priority shoud be the safety of their students, institution, and country.
The blind-leading-the-blind “advisors” and the students might fall into the Stealth-Jihad ditch, together.

Mark says
I don’t get it. Is the Catholic church somehow working with Islam? Of so what do they think they will get out of it?
Jay Boo says
It is not the ‘the Catholic church’ working with Islam.
However there may be a lot of upper income docile Catholics especially the elite educated PC ones.
A working class back-country Southern Baptist would not likely be so worried about their PC image and would never fall for that, assuming of course that they knew what ISIS is.
Jay Boo says
Please give money for flashlights and pencils to the improvised widows of ISIS whose poor dead husbands have been unfairly vilified for being faithful child-raping & butcher-knife wielding Muslims just like Muhammad of whom ‘true’ liberals fawn over with delight with unbridled kiss-butt reverence.

That part I thought it was sublime, utterly stupid, how come the guy did not realize it was troll big time?
Flash lights? So the soldiers can be spotted in the dark and get killed, they are poor and don’t have night vision. Give me a break.

ISIS wants flashlights so they can find 9 year old virgin girls in hiding.
Dear administrator please advise us how to start a club to offer them aid.

Well, *I* am not surprised.
This is exactly the attitude that reigns supreme in what passes for academe these days.
The PC/MC tools have no moral compass whatsoever, of course they will agree to anything they think students want. No doubt those idiots would have as happily agreed to a club for Satanists who wanted to practice animal sacrifice.
I well remember, and this was over 30 **years** ago, Swansea University agreeing to host a conference for PIE (Paedophile Information Exchange) where its leader Tom O’ Carroll was to speak. They were utterly miffed and confounded when there was a tremendous outcry, and bleated about ‘freedom of speech’. That wasn’t freedom of speech, it was sheer enabling of evil.
There were Labour politicians involved in legally representing them as well, Harman and Hewitt.

I believe this is how religious extremists of all faiths behave. They tend to blindly support religious extremists of not just their faith but others as well. I am an atheist born from a Indian Hindu family settled in Sydney but respect other people’s beliefs as long as they keep their beliefs to themselves and not harm or force their beliefs upon others. I do not go about preaching or enforcing atheism. I am always cautious dealing with people who are religious fanatics and obviously very guarded when it comes to Muslims.
Western Canadian says
This is how extremists from ALL faiths behave? You would be well advised to make a effort to educate yourself, before again making a total ass out of yourself.
Devout Jews and Christians, and devout muslims and devout atheists all behave the same way???
A truly devout Jew or Christian will build a church or a school if they have the resources to do so, and volunteer to assist in the church or school if they are not rich…. A truly devout muslim will burn down the same church or school, with its occupants inside for the crime of being ‘unislamic’.
And you cannot see any difference between them. You are truly blind and stupid.
Vijay says
Religious extremism of all faiths is bad but Muslims take it to level beyond comprehension.
Take this for example – Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, a U.S. organization that โdefends the rights of Catholics,โ issued a statement in response to the Charlie Hebdo murders titled โMuslims are right to be angry.โ
“What unites Muslims in their anger against Charlie Hebdo is the vulgar manner in which Muhammad has been portrayed. What they object to is being intentionally insulted over the course of many years. On this aspect, I am in total agreement with them.
Stephane Charbonnier, the paperโs publisher, was killed today in the slaughter. It is too bad that he didnโt understand the role he played in his tragic death. In 2012, when asked why he insults Muslims, he said, โMuhammad isnโt sacred to me.โ Had he not been so narcissistic, he may still be alive. Muhammad isnโt sacred to me, either, but it would never occur to me to deliberately insult Muslims by trashing him.”
I originally come from Kerala, India which has the largest and oldest Christian population in India. Not all of them are the most tolerant of people. Back in my college days I had a Christian colleague who openly stated that she would never in her life step foot in a Hindu temple. She spat out what she ate when she was told that it was an offering from a temple. I currently have a colleague at work who is a Jehovah’s witness who many times stated that Muslims have a right to defend their religion.
Just because I do not believe in organised religion and and I am cautious dealing with religious extremists and intolerant people does not make me an ass.
Western Canadian says
Your response is merely generalized babbling, in no way relating to my response to your ignorant and bigoted drivel……. I have had to opportunity to discuss islam with JH, and they do NOT make any comments that echo your made up conversation with a co-worker. As for Donohue, most catholics regard him as a weak, politically correct buffoon and sell-out.
Mirren10 says
”I believe this is how religious extremists of all faiths behave. They tend to blindly support religious extremists of not just their faith but others as well.”
You have a point, Vijay, but in my estimation it is a minimal one.
Your quote from Bill Donahue ? OK, the man is an ass, who has no understanding of free speech, but I certainly don’t believe he, or any other Christians, would react *violently* to a criticism of their faith.
The vile ”Piss Christ”, and the picture of the Virgin Mary done in faeces, did **not** evoke murderous violence from Christians, nor did they advocate the murder of the ‘artists’.
I believe that is the essential point, here.

If you do renounce the Catholic church, make sure it is for the right reasons, like the doctrine set forth by the leaders, not because of the people sitting around you. Finding a church with the right doctrine is VERY hard, been there, done that. PLEASE DO NOT lose you faith in Jesus Christ, He is the REAL head of the church, he never lies and is always true and faithful. Remember even Jesus had problems with the Jewish leaders, so much so that they crucified Him. However this had to be done so Jesus could conquer death for the salvation of man. Pray on it and you will get your answer.
Good luck to you and I WILL be praying for you.

Folks, this Veritas video is a set-up job. Barry University, in Miami, has a website. Please go there and read what the president, Dominican Sister Linda Bevilacqua, has to say about the video. The video is just another crude attempt to bash the Catholic Church. As Sister B. says, “there never was, and never will be a campus club that supports terrorists.” Also, bear in mind that Pope Francis has stated publicly that ISIS must be stopped (and he doesn’t imply peaceful dialogue).
