The question is clear: are Americans going to stand for the freedom of speech and tell these offended Muslims that they’re just going to have to put up with being offended, as the rest of us do, or are we going to place cartoons of Muhammad off-limits, thereby submitting ourselves to Sharia blasphemy laws?
“Poster for free-speech forum sets off debate at University of Minnesota,” by Maura Lerner, Star Tribune, May 5, 2015 (thanks to Paul):
A poster for a campus forum on the limits of free speech has set off a debate at the University of Minnesota — about the limits of free speech.
The poster, which first appeared in January, prompted hundreds of complaints from Muslim students and others for reproducing a controversial illustration of the prophet Mohammed from the French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo.
But it’s the university’s response to the complaints — just weeks after the massacre at Charlie Hebdo — that drew fire from some faculty members.
After initially demanding that the posters be taken down, university officials quickly rescinded the ban, calling it a mistake. Then the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action investigated and advised the dean of liberal arts to disavow the use of the offending image and “use your leadership role to repair the damage” it caused in the Muslim community.
Jane Kirtley, a professor of media ethics and law, said she was taken aback by the U’s response. “There is no question in my mind that this [poster] was protected speech,” Kirtley said.
The incident, which has been simmering behind the scenes for months, first was reported April 29 in the Minnesota Daily. On Tuesday, it drew national attention in the online journal Inside Higher Ed, in the wake of Sunday’s attack by gunmen on an anti-Islam cartoon contest in Garland, Texas.
Prof. Bruno Chaouat said the January forum, which he helped to organize, was designed as “an opportunity to educate about free speech.” He called the university’s reaction — deciding to launch an investigation — part of a worrisome trend.
“I think what’s going on is a global problem … of self-censorship,” said Chaouat, who is chairman of the Department of French and Italian. In particular, he called the recommendation to disavow the poster “profoundly outrageous.”
John Coleman, the liberal-arts dean, said Tuesday he has no intention of following that recommendation. “I really think the important thing here is to affirm and reaffirm the importance of open debate,” he said in an interview. That freedom, he noted, applies to everyone, including “Muslim students, Christian students, Jewish students. We want everybody to feel that they are able to express their views and either agree or disagree.”
The poster featured a now-famous drawing of a tearful prophet Mohammed, holding a sign “Je Suis Charlie,” which appeared on the cover of Charlie Hebdo days after Islamic militants killed 12 staff members at the magazine’s Paris headquarters.
On the poster, the word “censored” was superimposed on the drawing, under the heading: “Can One Laugh At Everything? Satire and Free Speech After Charlie.”
Organizers say the forum drew more than 200 people.
Shortly afterward, eight people filed complaints with the Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action office, saying the depiction of Mohammed was offensive and insulting to Muslims. In addition, some 300 people, including 260 Muslim students, signed a petition calling the flier “very offensive.” “Knowing that these caricatures hurt and are condemned by 1.75 billion Muslims in the world, the University should not have re-circulated/re-produced them,” the petition said, and it urged the U to prevent it from happening again.
As a result, the office launched an investigation, questioning faculty organizers about why they used the image.
Kimberly Hewitt, the director, said her office had no choice but to investigate. “There are limits on free speech, and that would be where you have harassment of an individual based on their identity,” she said. “We got complaints from eight individuals and a petition from 300 people saying that they felt that this was insulting, disparaging to their faith.”
When word of the complaints got out, a college administrator sent out an e-mail asking that the fliers be taken down. Coleman, the dean, said he promptly reversed that order when he learned about it. “I needed to make it clear in my position that our support for academic freedom and freedom of speech is absolutely paramount,” he said.
In the end, the investigation concluded that the flier “does not rise to the level of discriminatory harassment that would violate University policy,” according to a March 27 report.
But it also found that, because many people found the poster “personally offensive and hurtful,” it had contributed to an “atmosphere of disrespect towards Muslims at the University.” In a letter to Coleman, Hewitt recommended that he “communicate that [the College of Liberal Arts] does not support the flier’s image of the Charlie Hebdo depiction of Muhammad.”
What a relief.

Someone needs to tell them that their constant complaining about being offended by everything is very offending to us and they must stop. If they don’t stop load them on a plane and ship them to a Muslim country for an extended holiday.

They complain because they see it as an opportunity to get brownie points with Allah, who is watching their every move, including which hand they use to potty themselves, and if they watched their feet correctly after passing wind.
On the face of it, there is no way you could be offended by something like this. It is non-offensive.

That is “washed their feet after passing wind” not “watched their feet after passing wind” that would be to easy and nonsensical.

They must also get some brownie points from Obama and his Muslim Brotherhood friends. Pamela Geller was turned away by the DHS and the FBI when she asked for their help. Obama is apparently leaving her to fend off ISIS assassination threats as punishment for offending Obama’s Brotherhood friends. Fortunately, The Weekly Standard and Hannity have brought this to light. I am sure we haven’t hear the last of this.

“U of Minnesota: Muslims enraged at Charlie Hebdo poster for free speech forum”.
So, just be “Enraged” Muslims, that IS YOUR Free Speech Rights in America.
Oh, I remember, “Free Speech” is “Blasphemy” to Muslims, and does NOT apply to Infidels, especially when Infidels expose the TRUTH about Bloody Butchering Islam and Islam’s Prophet Muhammed.
Islam – DEMANDING World Wide FORCED “Blasphemy Laws”, with CRIMINAL PENALTIES against ANYONE who “Blasphemes” Islam or Allah and Islam’s “Prophet” Muhammed , when on the other hand, Islam has NO compunction with Blaspheming and Degrading ANY Philosophy or Faith, with expected Impunity, that is NOT 100% espousing of Islam’s LIES.
Islam – NOT a Religion, much less of “Peace”, Islam has an appetite for territorial expansion and military conquest, through Taqiyya and Kitman – Islamic Lying and Deception, by gaining the trust of non-believers – “Infidels” in order to draw out their vulnerability and defeat them.
It’s important for concerned American citizens to understand that Islam, which means “submission,” is NOT a religion. It is a totalitarian ideology that exists in five phases, all of which exist in 2015 America.
However IF Muslim Lying and Deception doesn’t work, THEN the Muslims WILL FORCE it through Bloody “Jihad” Butchery.
Remember The Five Stages of Islam (Link Below).
And Remember also Islam’s Philosophy as to Women:
1. Women are covered from head-to-toe .
2. Female genital mutilation.
3. Muslim families, and getting flogged or even beheaded for getting raped also proves how special women are in the “religion of peace.”.
4. Honor killings are another wonderful example of the treatment of women in Islam.
5. Underage marriage is all too common in the Muslim world.
6. Forced marriage in the British Muslim community is also out-of-control.
7. Women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to drive.
8. Prostitution is a part of the Muslim world.

What will the Mohammedans do if the counter-jihad invents a few scurrilous rhymes like the following, used to ridicule Hitler and company during WWII – “Hitler/ he only has one b*ll/ Goering has two …but they are small/ Himmler is something sim’lar/ and Goebbels has got no b*lls at all”?
Ridiculing the enemy is just and appropriate when the enemy – as it was in that case, and as it also is in our present situation (indeed, our 1400-year-old predicament) – is deeply malevolent, bent on world conquest, delights in mass murder and torture, and is, to boot, puffed up like some evil toad with demoniacal pride and vanity.
My main complaint about Charlie Hebdo is that they didn’t go far enough; they didn’t, for example, expose and skewer Mohammed the rapist of Safiyya, Mohammed the rapist of terrified little 9 year old Aisha. Why didn’t they show a Wanted poster and a rap sheet? “Gang boss, caravan-robber, murderer and rapist, pedophile, slave trader, extortionist”. Imagine what they could have done with the Hadith that says black dogs are “Satan”, or the other one that teaches that a woman, a donkey or a dog, if they pass in front of a Muslim who is ‘praying’, create some kind of spiritual static that prevents a Muslim’s ‘prayers’ from getting through to infernal allah.

DDA, as much as I respect the bravery of the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists, I don’t believe that most of them actually know much about the “Prophet” at all, except that pious Muslims didn’t want anyone to draw him. The only actual criticism of Islam I ever saw there was a reference to Muslim violence—but even then, I’m not sure they understand that this is part and parcel of Islam.
Like you, I prefer cartoons and other work that actually exposes the vicious texts and tenets of Islam, and its appalling history. No matter how silly a cartoon, I also want it to educate.

The problem is that there is not a wall of separation between the easily demonstrable evil extremists, on the one hand, and the hundreds of millions of Muslims Who Just Wanna Have a Sandwich. The latter demographic, however diverse they may seem to be, are directly related by their Islam to the former (at least, that’s what an education in Islam shows us). This inevitably triggers the problem that any criticism, mockery, ridicule, and/or condemnation tends to spill over from the Tiny Minority of Extremists and begins to dab and smear with a broad brush those hundreds of millions of people throughout the world. The Counter-Jihad cannot continue equivocating on this forever.

It is understandable for many to wonder why bother insulting muhammad. Wouldnt the world be better if we just let this go. I too would agree, but the reality militates against this approach. Muhammad and his followers were never about living peacefully with those of other religions. Muhammad declared that he would continue to war on infidels until they accept his god and him as its prophet. Hence, the Jews and Christians that simply would not accept him were murdered and it is no different today. Those who think that letting this go is going to make things better have just chosen to remain silent in the face of the coming slaughter by those that are determined to carry out muhammad’s command. Hence, it is better that people be informed and hopefully they will realize that speaking out is the best defence, as well as the best offense. It allows and forces those who would simply resort to more force to defend their belief system and ultimately reflect on what they have believed. Ultimately,if we do not speak out, those ignorant from among us will be our worst enemies. We cannot afford to remain silent and allow islam to grow through ignorance.

Everybody talks about living with the consequences of your actions and beliefs.
Another way of putting it, is you have to live with the RESULTS of your actions and beliefs, and that’s why Christian countries are the way they are, the one Jewish country is the way it is, Muslim countries are the way they are, and Atheist countries (Officially, Communist) are the way they are.
Which Muslim and Atheist countries aren’t dictatorships.
Some are not as harsh, but in all, those who aren’t filthy stinking rich, are pretty much dirt poor.
It’s a simple fact.
The means and technology to become a first world nation are cheaper than ever, and available to the entire world.
That the leaders of those third worlds choose not to help their own people is why their nations are the way they are.
Everybody likes to blame the U.S., and there are corrupt companies in the U.S., but there’s no law saying some third world leader had to deal with a corrupt company. These leaders could have refused the bribes and whatever, ensuring a nation’s resources went into building its economy.
But they don’t because – and I’ve been through dozens of third world countries – the one thing they all have in common is that from top to bottom, all believe corruption – accepting bribes, embezzling funds and such – is just an accepted fact of life, and the higher you climb, the bigger the pot you have access to.
The police for instance, in these countries, think nothing of shaking down a person for whatever they think they can get. And of course there’s a tourist rate.
In such countries, anybody who has a government job, and many PAY to get the job in the first place – takes a kickback to do what should be their job.
I used to sail, and most countries to clear in it’s maybe a hundred bucks for the paperwork, and a couple hours time.
In India, it was three days and over $1500.00 because everybody wants a “Souvenir.” (Cash)
The guy who gave you the forms wanted a souvenir.
The guy who stamped the forms wanted a souvenir.
The guy who told you the next building or office we had to go to, wanted a souvenir.
The secretary to each office wanted a souvenir.
And nothing was even in the same building, so once the cabbie knew you were going to an official building, he padded his bill by driving around the city (Mumbai) for a while.
Several times the paper trail lead us right back to the same buildings, just on a different floor, and once, one secretary thought another had gotten more souvenirs, so she said our paperwork wasn’t right and tried to shake us down for more souvenirs. But the second, thinking, if there were more souvenirs to be had they were hers because the first had already had her shot, was having none of that, and they pretty much came to blows.
So long story short, the reason any countries is the way it is, is because of its own beliefs and culture.
And I already get enough flack from my buddies for sticking my foot in my mouth.
I don’t need the government sticking my backside in the slammer.

I would love to see Islam removed from the free world but we all know that isn’t going to happen. The one thing that makes Islam and Muslims so dangerous to our freedoms is Sharia. Every jurisdiction must pass a law that forbids Sharia and makes the advocating or use of it a first time deportable offense. Islam without Sharia is just another crackpot cult. If we start deporting Sharia advocators to countries where it is practiced it is a win win for everyone. They get their Sharia they want and we keep our freedoms. I can’t see a downside to this. There is on other thing, everytime Muslim pull an attack like Texas I have to smile. No Western nation allows anyone to chop off hands and/or feet; behead people; stone adulterers; execute gays and lesbians; whip people in public (for any reason, let alone for the “crimes” of fornication, alcohol drinking, etc.); etc. What the West needs to do is connect the two dots that are as plain as the nose on our face:
Dot 1: Islam.
Dot 2: Muslims.
(And, along with this elementary dot-connection, of course, the West needs to school itself on how pernicious, dangerous, deadly, seditious, evil, and antithetical to human rights Islam is — the Islam which (we reasonably conclude) all Muslims support.)
