It is much, much more likely that the Islamic State will see the Supreme Court decision on gay marriage as evidence of the U.S.’s decadence and societal decay, and that will only serve to embolden and encourage them. But there is another glaring fallacy in this “analysis”: “That’s the lesson of history,” Rosa Brooks asserts: “Brutality and fear can keep people down for only so long. The Nazis learned this; the Soviets learned it; the Ku Klux Klan learned it; Pol Pot learned it; the Rwandan génocidaires learned it.”
How, exactly, did they learn this? By viewing photos of gay rights supporters? Or of loving couples of whatever persuasion? Did a photo of an embracing couple move Adolf Hitler to tears and induce him to call his genocidal armies back home and close the extermination camps? Did a photo of smiling people make Pol Pot realize that his stacks and shelves full of skulls were a terrible mistake, and lead him to resign and spend the rest of his life as a florist?
No. This kind of thing never happened, and by no stretch of the imagination is it the “lesson of history.” If the Nazis ever learned that “#LoveAlwaysWins,” they learned it in the blood and chaos and ruin of Berlin, as Soviet troops ran wild and raped every young German woman they could catch. #LoveAlwaysWins, indeed. The groups Brooks names learned that #LoveAlwaysWins, if they ever learned it, at the point of a gun, when they were forced by violence to stop what they were doing. Yes, even the Klan was prosecuted in the “racist” United States. The only exception to this is the Soviet Union, but Mikhail Gorbachev didn’t oversee the dissolution of the Soviet Union because he realized that the United States was not an enemy, but just a big gay hunk of love. The Soviet Union collapsed under the economic pressure that Ronald Reagan brought to bear upon it, and the societal/cultural pressure that Pope John Paul II and Lech Walesa brought upon it. It might still exist today if Walesa hadn’t been willing to risk his life in the Gdansk Shipyard.
And that’s what will defeat the Islamic State today: people willing to risk their lives to safeguard the dignity and freedom of every human being. But those who are willing to do that are the very ones who, in a case of suicidal short-sightedness, are generally vilified as “racists” and “bigots” by the supporters of gay marriage.
“Can Gay Marriage Defeat the Islamic State? A few — admittedly sappy — thoughts on the power of #LoveWins,” by Rosa Brooks, Foreign Policy, June 26, 2015:
I was thinking about two sets of images this morning: one from an Islamic State-controlled city in Iraq, the other from the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C.
The first set of images, from early June, shows masked gunmen surrounding a crowd of people, mostly men. Some of the faces in the crowd show fear or hatred; others are studiously blank. But all eyes are fixed on the rooftop of a nearby building, where a blindfolded man is dangling upside down, his ankle held tightly by another masked man. Next image: The blindfolded man’s body plummets headfirst toward the pavement below. Final image: a crumpled, bloody heap on the ground, surrounded by a sea of faces. Headline and caption, from Fox News: “ISIS conducts more executions of men for being gay.… On June 3, 2015, Islamic State (ISIS) operatives in Iraq’s Ninveh province published photos of a public execution in Mosul of three men convicted of acts of homosexuality. The three men were blindfolded and dropped head first from the roof of a tall building in front of a large crowd of spectators, including children.”
The second set of images shows another crowd, thousands of miles away from the first. This crowd is full of men and women, all ages and all races, and they’re waving American flags and rainbow-colored flags. This crowd isn’t flanked by gunmen; no one looks frightened or enraged. This crowd is laughing and embracing; a few people are weeping, their faces lit with relief and joy. Caption from the Washington Post: “Gay rights supporters celebrate outside the Supreme Court in Washington after justices ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry, no matter where they live.”
I know which crowd I’d rather be in.
Do you want to fight the Islamic State and the forces of Islamic extremist terrorism? I’ll tell you the best way to send a message to those masked gunmen in Iraq and Syria and to everyone else who gains power by sowing violence and fear. Just keep posting that second set of images. Post them on Facebook and Twitter and Reddit and in comments all over the Internet. Send them to your friends and your family. Send them to your pen pal in France and your old roommate in Tunisia. Send them to strangers….
And I still have faith that this dream is the one that will prevail, in the end. That’s the lesson of history: Brutality and fear can keep people down for only so long. The Nazis learned this; the Soviets learned it; the Ku Klux Klan learned it; Pol Pot learned it; the Rwandan génocidaires learned it.One of these days, the Islamic State and al Qaeda will learn it too.
I’m not a big fan of Twitter, but for once there’s a Twitter hashtag worth quoting, though it took my 13-year-old daughter to point it out to me: #LoveWins….

Let’s see if I’m getting this “logic” straight:
– The islamic state considers the West (including America) to be a decadent land without morality.
– The islamic state considers homosexuality to be a perversion and a sin, and they execute homosexuals in horrific ways.
– Therefore, one way to fight the islamic state is to send pictures of gay people happily waving their flag to everyone you know and to strangers as well.
What. The F***?
Right, that worked out so well for Hindus after the creation of Pakistan… Heinlein put it succinctly in Starship Troopers:
“Anyone who clings to the historically untrue – and thoroughly immoral – doctrine that ‘violence never settles anything’ I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and of the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler could referee, and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk, and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms.“

This naivete reminds me of an anecdote I once heard of the Muslim conquest of northern India (aka Pakistan/Afghanistan). The Hindus apparently could not get their heads around the groundless, irrational, unprovoked violence that the Muslims used, and never understood or believed it (until their own throats were being slit). and so it was said, if the dynamic of the Hindu-Muslim encounters: “The Hindus sharpened their arguments while the Muslims sharpened their knives.”
We all know how THAT turned out.

Why not just go on over there and explain to the murderers that this new rule in the U.S. will put an end to their murdering, raping, stealing, destructive ways, and that they should immediately free all slaves and just go on back home from whence they came?
And if they don’t listen, just wave the flag around and say…..
Well, they wouldn’t be waving their flag for long, and they would be pleading to be spared. isis is a part of the wild beast, and it can’t be reasoned with, and it isn’t going to disband and quit killing because of a decision by a court in the U.S. If the ruling is anything to them, it is fuel for the fire.

Heed Paul the Apostle:
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hinder the truth in unrighteousness;
19 because that which is known of God is manifest in them; for God manifested it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse:
21 because that, knowing God, they glorified him not as God, neither gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts unto uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves:
25 for that they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile passions: for their women changed the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another, men with men working unseemliness, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was due.
28 And even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting;
29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 backbiters, hateful to God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, unmerciful:
32 who, knowing the ordinance of God, that they that practise such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but also consent with them that practise them. (Rom. 1:18-32).
The recent Supreme Court decision was one more instance of the United States arrogantly flicking the middle finger at God; the comments in _Foreign Policy_, a supposedly elite and intellectual publication, show that Paul’s assertion about those professing to be wise becoming fools has proven empirically true.
Somehow, elite Americans and Europeans believe that the desire of the ages is for women to want to destroy their children in the womb and for men to get themselves bu##ered (or do it to others). Now, one of their spokesthings thinks that showing how open and affirming the USA is towards homosexual marriage will convert the savage ISIL terrorist. Is this truly the stage to which America’s intellectual elite has fallen? I hate to contemplate an affirmative answer, but fear I must.
Back when I was a teen, my dear uncle (alov hasholom) observed the masses of ejjikated “kids” waving VC flags and sporting Mao buttons and declared that America’s intellectuals has gone mad. Unfortunately, a generation later, insanity appears to be the new normal.
It’s time for conservatives in this country to step up to the plate, organize, and push to undo the whole legacy of the Silly ‘Sixities and Sillier ‘Seventies. Don’t acquiesce to the faits accomplis that the Left keeps handing us. Sometimes people say things that are really silly. This is one of those occasions. Nazi Germany lost because it ran into more powerful forces including the Soviet Union. Pol Pot was driven out by the Vietnamese who considered him a sociopath. If the Islamic State loses, it will lose because it has just created too many enemies.
I do not think gay marriage is of any help to the U.S. in its foreign policy issues. I think the Islamic State and other enemies just see this as confirmation that we are a society in decline. In most of the Moslem world, homosexuals face prosecution for being homosexuals. In Africa, homosexuality is blamed for spreading disease and causing the continent to suffer from AIDs.
Whatever you think of the gay marriage decision, I don’t see this as helpful to the USA in Africa and Asia. .
Kepha says
David, I am with you on this one. As a matter of fact, I believe that SSM is something which, along with the amoral pragmatism of a ruling Communist elite in supporting its clients, will probably drive most of Asia and Africa towards a renewed Sino-Russian alliance.
Worst of all, as a Christian American who knows the Bible, I cannot see how an America that stands for the destruction of its own children (immolation to Ba’al?) and for the sin of sodom deserves to win.

“That’s the lesson of history,” Rosa Brooks asserts: “Brutality and fear can keep people down for only so long. The Nazis learned this; the Soviets learned it; the Ku Klux Klan learned it; Pol Pot learned it; the Rwandan génocidaires learned it.”
There is one primary difference between jihadis and all the above mentioned groups- Brutality and fear was rooted in the above mentioned groups’ ideologies, not their religions! As most of us know, religion tells followers what their very fundamental connection is with God, with co-religionists, and with the world. (This also applies to Atheistic religions e.g. Buddhism.) Think of a person’s psyche as an inverted pyramid, and think of the religion as something at the very base of this pyramid.
A follower can support one ideology or another if his/her religion itself is neutral regarding the issues in those ideologies. A follower can even switch ideologies without switching his/her [neutral] religion. For example, when the Germans became truly aware of the evil that Nazis had perpetuated, most dropped support for Nazism without needing to drop their religion.
But what if the religion itself embeds an ideology of brutality and fear. What if hatred and violence are commandments of the very ‘God’ of this religion. Yes I am talking about Islam! A believer in such religion is unlikely to change his/her outlook even in the face of brutality and fear. This is because religion supports us [emotionally] in good, but also in bad (e.g. during traumatic situations even if those situations were created by ourselves). Evidence, you say? Just look how Muslims behave. In the Islamic hellholes, Muslims spend their entire lives in brutality and fear but never rebel against Islam. Muslimahs, whether in Islamic countries or western ones, live in brutality and fear all their lives and still eulogize Islam.
Or look at the Christians of Middle East and North Africa (MENA). They have been living in brutality and fear ever since removal of Saddam Hussein (that I know of), but do not fight back because they believe Christians are supposed to suffer for Jesus.
The above mentioned ideologies only lasted a few decades. Islam has lasted 14 centuries and is powerful as ever. The same is true of Christians in MENA; They will keep suffering for another hundred years but will not fight back!
So much for “Brutality and fear can keep people down for only so long.” The likes of Rosa Brooks neither understand human psychology nor the role of religion in a person’s life. It is not surprising that they have a completely wrong idea of what the problem is, and what the solution needs to be.

RCCA says
Of all the things you could possibly say regarding this historic development Jihadwatch chooses an article to demean the event and by extension LGBT’s. Disappointing but not surprising.
Personally I looked at this event as a hopeful sign. Fifty years ago homosexuality was a taboo subject. No sane person would have ever predicted that gays would ever be out of the closet, let alone legally allowed the right to marry in all fifty states. Perhaps in the next fifty years we will see a reform in Islam and the end of jihad terrorism, Islamic supremacism, and the oppression of minorities, women, gays in Muslim countries, because of the efforts of ordinary people who will be inspired by example of the success of LGBT in the West.
RCCA says
For historical context see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonewall_riots

According to both gay (hate that word) acquaintances of mine who were there… The version of Stonewall anyone would hear about was a whitewash of abuse of young under aged boys….. Rather the same way that the movie ‘Milk’ was a dishonest whitewash of a cowardly child rapist….. Political Correctness on both counts.
RCCA says
I wasn’t mentioning Stonewall to glorify a gay bar but to point out that the changes and developments for homosexuals (the normal ones who are not pedophiles, etc.) goes beyond anything predictable.
Wellington says
JW demeaned nothing, RCCA. Rather, it pointed out the silliness of pie-in-the sky solutions.
As for Islam reforming, dream on. Islam is the only major religion which is also a totalitarian ideology and there is no reforming a totalitarian ideology. Might as well try to reform Nazism or Marxism.
Respecting your comment, “Disappointing but not surprising,” you gave away more than I think you realized. Really, you are either hopelessly naïve or something worse.
somehistory says
You gave a response before I was able to formulate my thoughts on his comment, and said it better too.
He did reveal a whole heck of a lot.
RCCA says
We just have a different view of history and vision of change. There’s no way either of us knows what will be fifty or a hundred years from now. That depends on what people do in the meantime. Muslims exist and are not going to disappear. I hope the progressives and reformers succeed. I think they need our support not our condemnation.
One thing that probably won’t ever change are people who defend their opinions through ad hominem attacks. I may disagree and I might not ever like you but at least I won’t attempt to invalidate you as a person by accusing you of possessing some secret horrible flaw. That was creepy.
Wellington says
When one asserts, RCCA, as you did, that someone else demeaned a person or persons, and then goes on to say that it is “disappointing but not surprising,” such kind of commentary is a personal attack whether you acknowledge this or not and also can leave a person (like me) wondering at the motivation of statements like these. Nothing creepy about what I said. You know, seems to me you can dish it out but you can’t take it.
Know Thy Enemy says
I re-read Robert’s commentary and I don’t see anything that is demeaning to the event. His commentary is completely neutral. All criticism, including of the sarcastic kind, is directed at Rosa Brooks’s and her FP article.
Now even though Jihadwatch is not a LGBT site, Robert has worked hard to bring attention to the oppression and persecution of LGBTs in Islamic societies. It is LGBTs themselves who reject Robert’s efforts and vilify him as a racist and bigot! So why should JW be squandering on champagne??
“Disappointing but not surprising.”
Usually there is this thing called self-respect in the brave who risk their lives for the good of everyone. In fact, self-respect is the very seed that makes them brave! Hence you shouldn’t be surprised.
“Perhaps in the next fifty years we will see a reform in Islam and the end of jihad terrorism…”
RCCA, tell me something: What good is it visiting JW year upon year and reading articles, if you fail to understand the nature of Islam correctly, and fail to understand that the only way a Muslim can truly reform is by becoming an Ex-Muslim!

Face it, the only way – the only way to defeat IS, AQ and the other dozens of Islamic Jihadist groups is to set aside democratic politeness and self imposed impotence for long enough to slaughter them.
