Ganor is quite right in saying that “deradicalization” doesn’t work: many such programs are based on the premise that the true teachings of Islam are peaceful, and so all that needs to be done is show the jihadis how they’re misunderstanding the Qur’an and overlooking its teachings of peace, and all will be well. But since the Qur’an and Sunnah are full of commands to make war against and subjugate unbelievers, the idea that jihadis can be “deradicalized” by reference to them is just a myth told to Infidel authorities to lull them into complacency.
Ganor is likewise quite right when he says: “We need to understand how terrorist groups such as Islamic State are recruiting young men and women.” We do need to understand that, and it isn’t hard to understand, but since it involves a direct appeal to Islamic authenticity, virtually all authorities choose to ignore it and search for other explanations. Ganor himself does this when “he said violent computer games might be fuelling some young people’s desire for a so-called ‘adrenaline’ rush.”
There are plenty of young non-Muslims who play violent computer games and yet never join jihad groups. The key element here is once again the one that no one wishes to acknowledge: Islam.
“Deradicalisation ‘practically impossible’: Counter-terrorism expert warns against reforming radicals,” by Danuta Kozaki, ABC.net.au, July 27, 2015:
A leading international counter-terrorism expert from Israel has issued a warning to Australia about the success rate of deradicalisation programs.
Professor Boaz Ganor, from the International Policy Institute for Counter Terrorism, has told a meeting in Sydney only a minority of deradicalisation cases work.
“I don’t believe in deradicalisation in general terms because once those people have been radicalised, it is practically impossible to uproot those ideas in their heads,” he said.
“However, I’m a great believer in prevention. A lot can be done in the education and religious systems to prevent those people who might be intrigued.”
Professor Ganor was speaking at a forum organised by the New South Wales Parliamentary Friends of Israel and the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies.
NSW Opposition frontbencher and deputy chairman of the parliamentary group Walt Secord said it was the difficult job of legislators to understand what programs work.
“I don’t know what the answer is,” he said.
“What do we do as legislators? Do we strip citizenship for foreign nationals if they fight for listed terrorist groups?
“Which programs work? It’s an issue jurisdictions around the world are grappling with.”
Professor Ganor said prevention was the key.
“We need to understand how terrorist groups such as Islamic State are recruiting young men and women,” he said.
He said violent computer games might be fuelling some young people’s desire for a so-called ‘adrenaline’ rush.
“Being offered by representatives of ISIS to do those barbaric things in real life — the adrenaline works.,” Professor Ganor said….
Don McKellar says
It’s like alcoholism — but with books! All the alcoholic has to do is open the bottle and take a drink and he’s off the wagon; all a jihadi has to do is open up a Koran or the hadiths and read and he’s off the wagon! An alcoholic not drinking doesn’t make booze change; a jihadi refraining from violence doesn’t make the Islamic texts change! It is what it is and they say what they say!
mortimer says
Many jihadists and fanatical Muslims experience what is known as SALAFI BURNOUT.
That means they become weary of the absurdities in Islam and just stop practicing them one day…stop ready the hate-filled Koran and hadiths and stop attending the mosque. They start acting like ordinary, secular people around them. They become non-practicing ‘cultural Muslims’ who kind-of believe, but won’t waste any more of their time.
Don McKellar says
Well, of course. Who can keep up that much insanity for too long? It’s against human nature. So they become like the majority of moslems. And then, somewhere else, other moslems are suddenly ignited by the evil in the books and they become jihadis. And they, if the former jihadis are nearby, become the target for a bully/attack/fight/sneer — maybe death — for not being devout and following the texts and exactly as they could. Yes, it’s an endless cycle, been going on for 1300 – 1400 years. Won’t end any time soon. Not with all that oil money fueling the global jihad, and all that politically correct welfare awaiting the devout moslem in the land of the kuffar! So don’t hold your breath waiting for it to all come crashing down.
JIMJFOX says
Better the jihadi takes a slug of Jim Beam- then he CAN’T be a devout muslim.
He might develop a craving for bacon…

Pretty much – “Professor” Ganor gets it both right and wrong at the same time.

Dr. Ganor’s right because Islam teaches violence from the beginning of Mohammed’s ministry to the end of Mohammed’s life.
The only way to deprogram jihadists is to TOTALLY DEBUNK Islam by using the ‘REVISIONIST’ theory which found Islam was created by scheming caliphs in the 200 years following Mohammed.
Telling Muslims to become ‘more Islamic’ is telling them to become ‘more VIOLENT’…and to imitate the savage barbarism of Mohammed.
That’s what all jihadists, especially ISIS, are doing.

Judging from the photos I’ve seen of these masked thugs and women in garbage bags I bet that they don’t have any High School yearbooks. All the pictures would look pretty much the same.

@Joseph. A-hahahahaha! You’re too much! I love it!!!!!
John spielman says
The reason that “deradicalization” does not and cannot work is because these people are either demon possessed or at least demon influenced by Allah/Satan and need deliverance from it by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, who is God incarnate

Amen John.

De-islamisation would be far more effective than de-radicalisation in preventing islamic terrorism.
Louise from Canada says
John you said it and it is so simple to understand. Why can’t others see it??
mortimer says
John spielman needn’t find a demon behind every Muslim, because the brainwashing within Islam well accounts for the intensity of delusion. An even more intense form of Islamic brainwashing is practiced by the Sufis. Some former Sufis have actually reported what appear to be phenomena associated with spirit possession.
Jaladhi says
When what we call radicalization is the normal religion for Muslims then how can one de-radicalize them. That would mean giving up their religion – plain and simple! Not gonna happen!!
Radical Islam is actually regular Islam for Muslims and they practice it. This is the reason you don’t find Muslim masses criticizing the so called radicals.
Proud Islamophobe says
“All that mattered, really, is that America is fundamentally racist.”
Gee, just like Islam is supremacist, intolerant, and simply evil??
These protectors of Islam get so emotional that they forget just how absurd they sound in making their various arguments.
And the whole conflating of Islam with being black is plain silly. Malcolm X tried it and it didn’t work in the end. Even he realized how absurd the whole exercise was.
This isn’t about race. It is about Islam. Of course they want to mislead others into on what’s really important.
RG says
@John spielman. Of course, you’re right! But the secular world wants to see a more practical explanation. Remember, God’s Word clearly tells us that, “spiritual things are spiritually discerned’. It’s not hard for a born-again Christian to discern demonic activity, if he’s truly living for Jesus, but we live in a world that is ruled by the powers of evil. I can understand your comment perfectly well, and I agree wholeheartedly, but the eyes of most secularists are blind! That’s why most people buy into ‘pc’ism’ with such voracity! It’s just incomprehensible for them to attribute a “religious order” to satanic activity, especially a religious order where the women actually wear ‘long flowing robes’!!! I understand perfectly well, that you are not saying that all muslims are demon-possessed–you said, ‘demon influenced’, — and there’s a big difference, which we both know. Muslims are ruled, by and large, by a spirit of islam and islam is beyond all doubt, a product of the mind of SATAN!!!!! Secularists will tell you that Hitler was satanic, and Jim Jones and Charles Manson and Timothy McVeigh, but muslims are just, well…. an ‘uneducated’ lot, unschooled in the ways of Western culture, or “they’re out of touch with the 21st century”. NO, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, John Spielman, THEY ARE “INFLUENCED BY SATAN” and their “religion” is the source of their totally confused state of mind! And the answer to the dilemma is nothing but a good old-fashioned walk down the “sawdust trail”–to use a cliché of our grandparents–it’s what modern Christians nowadays refer to as ACCEPTING CHRIST AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR!!!!! That’s the Answer–ALWAYS WAS, ALWAYS WILL BE!!!!!
JIMJFOX says
“the eyes of most secularists are blind!”
And where did you get this pearl of religious wisdom?
RG says
@JIMJFOX. It comes from the Book that most Westerners (religious or not) used to call the ‘Good Book’! Jesus said, ‘If the blind lead the blind, then both shall fall into the ditch.’ It’s the “wisdom” of the ages, from the mouth of our Creator Himself, which Western society now seems to want to throw on the trash heap! The reason we ‘civilized’ Americans and Westerners in general, are in the mess we’re in, is because we’ve exchanged the Truth (which is only found in our Lord and Savior) for our own selfish inventions (ideas)! Only fools deny the existence of God (not saying that you are one of them), and yes, it takes an ‘expert’ childlike heart to acknowledge my need and dependence on Him!!!
JIMJFOX says
Does it take an EXPERT to know this?
Evolution says
Australia… always blaming computer games for things that go wrong with children.
I played violent video games from a very young age up to my 30’s.
I’ve had fights started with me on public transport where I didn’t fight back.
The difference ? I’m not muslim.
If muslims can’t handle violent video games or girls not dressed as garbage bags, they should perhaps consider returning back to their own lands and “enjoying” their own culture.
Michael Copeland says
The individual who is ‘radicalized’ is not someone who is mistaken, who has gone ‘off the rails’, or missed the point. He is one who has bothered to study and understand the ROOTS of his ideology (Latin RADIX, root). As a result he is very well-informed and well-qualified. The radical doctrines are the base doctrines, without which the ideology would be meaningless. They are, to change the metaphor, the CORE.

If capitol punishment was enacted for any act of terror caused/enacted in the name if Isum the cult members themselves would start to self deradicalize or perish. Either way works.
