It begins to dawn even upon the Secretary of State that he may not quite have achieved peace in our time. But he has already given away the store.
“Kerry says Iran vow to defy U.S. is ‘very disturbing,’ Reuters, July 21, 2015:
DUBAI (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said a speech by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday vowing to defy American policies in the region despite a deal with world powers over Tehran’s nuclear program was “very disturbing”.
“I don’t know how to interpret it at this point in time, except to take it at face value, that that’s his policy,” he said in the interview with Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television, parts of which the network quoted on Tuesday.
“But I do know that often comments are made publicly and things can evolve that are different. If it is the policy, it’s very disturbing, it’s very troubling,” he added.
Ayatollah Khamenei told supporters on Saturday that U.S. policies in the region were “180 degrees” opposed to Iran’s, at a speech in a Tehran mosque punctuated by chants of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel”.
“Even after this deal our policy toward the arrogant U.S. will not change,” Khamenei said….

” We are governed by fools and cretins.”
The Kerry quote brings up the old question: are you better off with leaders who are evil and not stupid, or stupid and not evil? The two are not mutually exclusive, of course.
I understand Putin, who is evil but not stupid, is very popular in Russia. The Russians know that Putin is not going to dissolve Russia, or offer Russia to foreign invaders, because Putin identifies as a nationalist Russian. It’s rough on Ukrainian nationalist fascists, as opposed to Ukrainian fascist Russian sympathizers, but tough!!!!
It’s almost unbelievable that a Secretary of State would take any commitment, or any statement, by a leader of a foreign enemy (or friend, for that matter) at face value. As Reagan said “Trust, but verify.” The only thing that matters in foreign affairs is actions and capabilities.
In fact, Iran and the US have some serious shared interests. This is a very interesting article with which I don’t entirely agree, but find enlightening:
http://www.vdare.com/articles/obamas-mideast-game-of-thrones
Iran and the US both have an interest in limiting the Islamic State and in maintaining Syria as a coherent entity, even though it is allied with Iran and seen as a threat by Saudi Arabia and Israel. The interests of the US and Israel will not always be exactly the same, which is a normal situation for independent countries. It is completely in the interest of the US that Israel continues as a strong, liberal, representative state, but Israel and the US may differ on tactics or strategy.
It is, in fact, a vital interest of the US that Iran not develop a nuclear weapon. Within this parameter, the US can tolerate, or even covertly encourage, Iranian actions to assist the Syrian government and the Shi’ite government of Iraq. I’m afraid the US blew the opportunity to have Iraq as a counter to Iran by destroying the dictatorship and Ba’athist government of Saddam Hussein.
mgoldberg says
It won’t trouble him for long. His boss Obama will insist that if we were more sensitive to Iran’s needs, then they would feel the benefits. He’ll ask for more ‘aide’ for the Iranians, or something to that effect.
The Mullahs will laugh at the stupidity.
Obama will do nothing. Kerry will do less, except to say that all will be well, and if the congress resists then they are ‘radical’s. The Israeli’s will be portrayed even worse, but the Saudi’s, Egyptians, the Emirates, all will resist all this because their lives depend upon resisting all this. Meanwhile, Al-Queda will be relied upon as an ally against ISIS, as will Hamas, and the muslim brotherhood by Obama and Kerry.
And that’s how it goes…. the more hideous the latest iteration of Muslim homicidism, dedicated to the ‘ummah’, the more Obama and the rest go to asking support of the perceived less homicidal muslims.
Tequila Not Taqiyya says

Does Obama, Kerry and all liberals live in a bubble? Do they not have television sets or something? It’s very “troubling” to many how he didn’t hear about their “chants” prior to the nuclear deal!! Or maybe he heard them but he thought he was hallucinating like all liberals do! And to think that Iran would follow ANY of the deal is beyond my comprehension!! I got into a discussion yesterday with an Obama-supporter over at left-leaning Politico yesterday. Like many, he is banking on the proposition (Obama is peddling), the Iranian people are basically pro-America and pro-West and in light of engagement with the U.S. and the West Iran might or probably will change its behavior in years to come. Consequently I found an enlightening piece by Bruce Thornton at Frontpagmag this morning, “MORE SANCTIONS WOULDN’T HAVE STOPPED IRAN But one measure would have.”
Thorton wrote: “But what other evidence could there be for believing that a “majority” of Iranians are pro-Western? Opinion surveys give only a rough sketch, but few support that conclusion. In a 2012 Pew survey 83% of Iranians favored Shari’a law, and 66% thought religious leaders should have some or a large influence on politics, beliefs hard to square with positive feelings for secular America. Likewise an earlier 2011 Rand survey of Iranian attitudes concluded, “The findings suggest that many of the Islamic Republic’s policies, including opposition to U.S. interests and the pursuit of a nuclear civilian and (possibly) nuclear weapon capability, were supported by a significant portion of the Iranian population.” Contrary claims of widespread Iranian fondness for America are dubious when all we have to rely on is anecdotal evidence like a 2013 New York Times article headlined “How Young Iranians View America,” a unfounded extrapolation from the content of the reporter’s conversations with a mere handful of Iranians in Tehran.
The notion that a majority of Iranians are pro-American reflects what could be called the “fallacy of the capital.” Because Western news organizations and cameras are concentrated in capitals, where pro-Western people tend to be concentrated and thus easy to find, what goes on in the capital gets extensively reported and considered representative of the whole country….”
Now I am reading Thomas Friedman, “Obama and the Iran Doctrine.” (April 2015)
Friedman qouted Obama: ‘The notion that Iran is undeterrable — “it’s simply not the case,” he added. “And so for us to say, ‘Let’s try’ — understanding that we’re preserving all our options, that we’re not naïve — but if in fact we can resolve these issues diplomatically, we are more likely to be safe, more likely to be secure, in a better position to protect our allies,++++ and who knows? Iran may change.++++ If it doesn’t, our deterrence capabilities, our military superiority stays in place. … We’re not relinquishing our capacity to defend ourselves or our allies. In that situation, why wouldn’t we test it?”
Obama continues: Obviously, Israel is in a different situation, he added. “Now, what you might hear from Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu, which I respect, is the notion, ‘Look, Israel is more vulnerable. We don’t have the luxury of testing these propositions the way you do,’ and I completely understand that. And further, I completely understand Israel’s belief that given the tragic history of the Jewish people, they can’t be dependent solely on us for their own security.
But what I would say to them is that not only am I absolutely committed to making sure that they maintain their qualitative military edge, and that they can deter any potential future attacks, but what I’m willing to do is to make the kinds of commitments that would give everybody in the neighborhood, including Iran, a clarity that if Israel were to be attacked by any state, that we would stand by them. And that, I think, should be … sufficient to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see whether or not we can at least take the nuclear issue off the table.”
(Now that’s reassuring, especially coming from an Islamophile like Barack Hussein Obama.)
Obama added: “What I would say to the Israeli people is … that there is no formula, there is no option, to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon that will be more effective than the diplomatic initiative and framework that we put forward — and that’s demonstrable….”
Thorton disagrees: “The point is not, contrary to Obama, that full-scale war is the only alternative to stopping Iran. An incremental application of force in response to Iranian intransigence and stonewalling during negotiations––destroying the Arak nuclear reactor, for example––would have convinced Iran that there was a serious price to pay for their obstructionism, lying, and cheating on their obligations….”
Personally, I believe nothing short of a sustained bombing (whatever it takes) until all of Iran’s nuclear sites are obliterated will be effective. That is what is called for in this instance.
voegelinian says
“Like many, he is banking on the proposition (Obama is peddling), the Iranian people are basically pro-America and pro-West…”
