This is the state of the world today. “I Will Always Remember Where I Was When Cecil The Lion Was Killed,” Duffel Blog, August 3, 2015 (thanks to David):
The following is an op-ed written by “Mohammed,” a Syrian War Refugee.
I am sorry it is taking me so long to post my outrage over Cecil the Lion. My village has been without electricity for the last week after the Americans bombed our power plant. I had to walk for two days — hiding from ISIS along the way — before I found this Internet cafe. But my anger over the death of Cecil is still hot as the desert sands.
I remember exactly what I was doing when I heard what had happened.
It started off as a normal day for my town, with the Syrian Air Force dropping barrel bombs on several neighborhoods and a local school. As I dug the bodies of several women out of the rubble, one of the other rescue workers asked if I’d heard that Cecil the Lion was killed.
I froze in shock, dropping part of what I assume was once a human arm on the ground. “Not Cecil the Lion!” I exclaimed. “Not him! Truly, is there no innocence left in this world?” I cried harder than when we discovered my brother was gay and ISIS forced us to throw him off a building.
The rest of the day was a numb blur: watching my neighbor getting beheaded by Sharia enforcers, foraging for food in bombed-out buildings, burying my daughter after she died of cholera, and registering my outrage that rich Americans can fly anywhere in the world and kill whatever they want.
My entire family — the ones not gassed to death — are also in shock. My sister was beside herself with tears from the acid that was flung in her face, but I am sure her tears were meant for poor, majestic Cecil.
It is times like this I thank Allah that my wife was kidnapped into sexual slavery last year and was spared the horror of learning what happened to this beautiful and majestic creature.
I often wonder what is wrong with America. You do not hear stories like this in Syria, partly because we already killed all our lions but also because we killed all our dentists….

Is this serious or from the Onion? I hope it is from the Onion. What a poor excuse of a man that is more worried about a lion than people.
john spielman says
it is a sarcastic article about the frivolity of the western nations who care more about a lion being killed than the slaughter by isiam
JIMJFOX says
Oh dear! Your humor radar is switched off. How embarrassing.
NICE ONE, ROBERT!!
Cornelius says
Ever heard of the word ‘sarcasm’?

Hmmm …
ISIS is not Islam — All Americas fault
This con job was probably written by Leftist at Brandeis University student posing as a Syrian trying to impress his Islam (butt-kissing) liberal fellow students.

It’s a parody, Jay Boo.

@Clay- Duffleblog is a military parody site, like The Onion. It speaks volumes about today’s world that at first glance it seems plausible.

(Good call–just wanted to check to find out if someone else had already said so.)
JIMJFOX says
It speaks volumes that people are gullible, with no sense of humor.
These were my exact feelings on first seeing the Cecil nonsense.
WTF is up with this dopey media world? Actually, that’s rhetorical-
all the trash TV gives us the answer–

Hilarious?

Je suis Cecil.

🙂
Me too.

Et Moi Aussi!
Gail Griffin says
I knew you were French Foxx that’s why you have no compassion for a lion.
David Young says
Au contraire! As a Frenchman, lion comes naturally to Fox.

Ah oui, steak de lion avec sauce du gazelle et un beau sauvignon aux aromes de fruits blancs. Superbe!

Many, vastly more important news was ignored for the lion story to take over for several days. This shows the absurd world in which we live. And it is done with humor, which actually is a great way to make a point.
Westman says
Imagine how depressed the Kardashians must be to be upstaged by an old lion and a dentist as the most important icons of American life. Maybe Ben Affleck could offer something about the racism shown against the dentist’s animal-killing religion.
The founding fathers would be so proud as the Republic citizens refuse to acknowledge a threat to their existence much less pay the real continuing price for freedom. It’s all free, isn’t it?
“Alas, poor Freedom! I knew him, Horatio; a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy; he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is!”

Move over, Caitlyn Jenner, your 15 minutes are over (at least until you decide you want to go back, in which case you get a 5 minutes extension)…
The overall tone and message reminds me of this:

This is the state of CNN,endless drivel about an iconic lion that was shot by an American big game hunter. No European, Asian or Russian news, I am 1000% certain that there is something more important than this happening around the world. This deserves about 30 seconds of my attention on the news. Maybe 30 seconds is already too much.

‘Fiction’!!!, she shouted…Nice try though…
Bart says
Never mind the genocide that goes on in Zimbabwe.
Hunting white people is apparently legal there!

I expect stupidity from left wing sites. And this article shows just how stupid the left is. But I expect better from conservative websites. When Breitbart and Barenakedislam are condemning the lion hunt, even if peripherally, I gotta wonder if the whole world is off its rocker.
Western Canadian says
Not a left wing site…. And as someone who is anti-jihad, pro-life and animal rescue… you’re an idiot.
abad says
The reason animals like Cecil the Lion are endangered is because lunatic Muslims keep breeding like rabbits and destroying the entire planet with their satanic religion.
quotha raven says
abad – minor correction to yrs: Lions are not an endangered species. Cheers! Quotha
Rob says
Great!
Pity he couldn’t have blended in a bit about Cecil being a native of Zimbabwe where the glorious Pres for Life Robt Mugabe rescued an impoverished desert from the British and turned it into the Breadbasket of Africa.
In so doing RM corrected the Zimbabwean inflation rate from a few billion percent per year to rock solid parity with the Greenback.
He also was instrumental in providing Welcome to Zimbabwe programmes for Sth Africans fleeing the economic meltdown in their country.
Larry A. Singleton says
I am getting sick and tired of this. This is the kind of bullshit you leave to liberals; this narrow-minded labeling if you think a certain way: Care for endangered animals. You’re an environmental wacko. I read this “Gary the Gazelle-I sure miss Gary” crack and I just wanted to puke.
I’m a third generation National Geographic subscriber. (until I got pissed at them over their map issue re. China and Tibet. among other things) I’m not a “tree-hugger” but you’d have to be a total moron not to see we’re destroying this planet. We have devastated the oceans. Wiped out whole species. Call me a woose but I cringe when I think of the American buffalo that used to cover the plains. I’m not a big fan of Steven Seagal, and I even remember thinking his little speech at the end of the movie concerning the environment was kind of hokie, but watching it recently I realized he actually nailed it. Especially when it came to corporations and the oil companies.
This kind of “I remember where I was…” crap is appropriate for those fools who don’t believe we’re getting screwed by BOTH the frigging Democrats and Republicans where it seems like a tag team from Hell.
I USED to be a liberal but am more conservative in my attitudes. If you’re going to pick an issue to see whose, you know what, is bigger, This is The LAST issue you should use.
And no offense; I don’t give a rats ass what this guys issues are, he’ll probably be the first one to celebrate “Independence” from the evil colonialist and not give a second thought to the fact that the minute the British/French left Africa it reverted to the backwards, primitive shithole it was before. I wonder how many people miss South African Apartheid when they think of what took it’s place? Or forget that it wasn’t American slave traders who enslaved his ancestors but his own people and the most racist people on the planet; the Arabs. (Read Slavery, Terrorism and Islam by Peter Hammond and Winston Churchill’s Story of the Malakand Field Force.)
Western Canadian says
As someone who has tried to cover all bases (pro-life, animal rescue, donations to food banks and other charities……) I can’t help but wonder why more people don’t realize you can have more than one interest, and more than one way to help others, and recognize that there is more than just one other.
And most of the noise about ‘we are destroying the planet’ that you hear is just that: Noise.
Compare the western semi-free markets and SOME property rights, to anywhere else. Just as we led the charge against slavery, we have and are doing the same with environmental health. Check out the real history of the destruction of the buffalo….. Native Americans bear the blame for that, not the later immigrants.

The frenzied pace of Islamic State (or any Muslim entity) at generating horror and death still registers below the challenge of preparation of a sack lunch for kids to take to school.
Alex says
Haha, awesome article.

Since my heroes since childhood included Howard Hill, Fred Bear, William Tell, Robin Hood and even Samson and Tarzan who killed Lions with their bare hands, I’m going to side with the dentist. It was a free range lion, ie… organic red meat for the villagers. The Syrians on the other hand I hope are truly getting sick of killing. As for the ones who are, may God have mercy on them because allah surely wont.
Matthieu Baudin says
Yes, we need to laugh more often!
Peggy says
I can’t find humour in this. I know where this article is heading but we have capacity to care for both people and animals and should not have to choose.
Anyone who kills for sport is evil and should pay the price for their crime.
Know Thy Enemy says
Agreed. Spiritually it sets us backwards to kill any living creature for sport! All animals, with the exception of mosquitoes, deserve to live as much as humans do!
FredvanH says
Crime? Killing a carnivorous predator that wouldn’t think twice about having you for dinner given half a chance? You’re totally insane.
Western Canadian says
Actually, it is the she lions who do the killing…. And never for sport, which puts them above the sick and cowardly dentist.
Ashley says
Peggy…I think the issue is that the MSM has shoved, and continues to shove, Cecil down our throats while ignoring the BIG issues that face our day.
No one is asking you to choose between Cecil and the Islamic threat…they are apples and oranges. However, I’m personally offended that the MSM continues to stream coverage Cecil 24/7 while Robert Spencer risks his life to sound the alarms. Robert, Pamela, Geert, and others are maligned and literally thrown to the media wolves.
BTW, I see no need for trophy hunting… But I also see no need to saturate the news feeds with this story.
I think the article was a brilliant piece. I don’t make light of Cecil’s fate, but it doesn’t register on my long list of matters that gravely concern me, my country, and my world.
Peggy says
I respect your priorities and would not try to change them but I think that we can choose to read stories about this magnificent animal or choose to read about Islamic threat or simply choose to care about both.
We have the capacity to do that.
If you think that there are too many stories about Cecil then ignore them. This is not the only story and just because it is out there frequently now it doesn’t take space from other news.
Again everyone can make their own choices.
Mo says
@ Peggy
“I can’t find humour in this. I know where this article is heading but we have capacity to care for both people and animals and should not have to choose.”
“We” don’t need to choose. People whose moral compass is not broken do not put the killing of an animal and the murder of human beings on the same level, as though they are remotely equal.
Peggy says
Wheter you believe they have the same value or not is irrelevant here. My point was that we have the capacity to care about more than one issue at the time and neither issue will have less contribution.
Corredt me if I am wrong but what I am getting from your post is that people who feel equally determined to stop both have a broken moral compass. I disagree as I suspect many more people will.
I donate time and money to Save the Children Fund and also to Animals Australia. This doesn’t mean that I care more about animals than children. It just means that I can do both. Maybe multitasking is not your strong suit.

Trophy hunting offends me. At least when you catch a giant fish, you can take a photo then throw him back in before he expires. But when you kill a mammal, there’s no reprieve.
Lioness says
Killing a beautiful lion for fun is sick, but the outrage that followed was ashtonoshing, when you compare the lack of even a whisper while thousands of human beings are slaughtered daily by ISIS. We have a battle between lions and Christians, and lions win. Remind you of somethign form history, when the savages cheered the lion and relished the sight of the devoured Christian man? Dark times are back.
That blog is brilliant, and with great sarcasm summerizes everything that is warped in today’s humanity.

“I had to walk for two days — hiding from ISIS along the way — before I found this Internet cafe.” — “Mohammed”, Syrian War refugee
To PC-MC-addled Westerners (who, it seems remain the majority), what Mohammed slyly telegraphs is that he is a victim of the Extremists, which datum, in the perspective of the PC-MC-addled Westerners, immediately translates into “Oh, well then he must be a moderate Muslim!”
(Tweak that formula around the edges and apply a little spackle (i.e., modify the “moderate” into any number of permutations which allow for retaining the gist of the Moderate Muslim without its ridiculous appearance, and boost the numbers of the “Tiny” descriptor of the still-retained Minority of Extremists du jour), and you have the asymptotic perspective from within the Counter-Jihad.)

You’re clearly too busy taking pot shots at your (supposedly) fellow counter-jihadists and accusing them of being ‘asymptotic’ to realise the whole article was a **piss take** of the attitude of the media who ignore the murder of millions of Christians in the ME at the hands of muslims, but glom onto the shooting of a lion by a dentist.
And no, I’m not in the least sympathetic toward ‘big game hunters’; I wish Cecil had eaten the miserable bastard.
Western Canadian says
Very well put, on all points.
