“The frustration for those of us who have been calling for compassion for Syrian victims for many months is that the Christian community is yet again left at the bottom of the heap… Britain should make Syrian Christians a priority…”
One of the rare voices of sanity in Europe’s Migrant Crisis, Lord Carey tempers compassion with a “clear-headed” appraisal of the risks of Muslim mass immigration, calls for “renewed military and diplomatic efforts to crush the twin menaces of Islamic State and al-Qaeda once and for all.”
“Britain Has a Duty to Rescue Syria’s Christians,” by George Carey, the Telegraph via AINA, September 6, 2015:
The dramatic and disturbing developments of the past few days have introduced a new, heart-rending dimension to this refugee crisis. Undoubtedly, the most disturbing aspect is just how impotent Europe is proving itself to be. If the EU is not resilient in the face of this disaster, it could be torn apart.
I can’t help thinking of Corporal Jones’s catchphrase — “Don’t panic!” But even the Germans are panicking as Angela Merkel, in a desperate attempt to cajole her fellow European leaders into accepting binding quotas, has declared open season for up to 800,000 Syrians to come to Germany.
Isn’t it a bit rich for the Germans to criticise other nations, including Britain, for failing to accept refugees? For years, our warm-hearted land has consistently accepted more asylum-seekers than Germany.
Besides, it would be a mistake to give way to bullying calls to immediately open our doors to tens of thousands of refugees. We are a small island and recent immigration figures are highly disturbing. Last year, a net figure of 330,000 people settled among us — more than the population of Sunderland. Imagine this continuing, year after year.
Alas, the signal that Germany is opening its doors to this influx will make Europe into an even more attractive magnet for those who are genuine refugees — but also to floods of economic migrants, most of whom are young men travelling alone. We don’t even know how many of these have been combatants in the civil war.
If some of what I say sounds harsh or, heaven forbid, a touch unchristian, let me make it clear that I welcome David Cameron’s announcement to allow thousands more to enter Britain through refugee camps in Syria’s neighbouring countries. In the long term, this strategy will cut out the traffickers and reduce the risk of the sea and land journeys.
But the frustration for those of us who have been calling for compassion for Syrian victims for many months is that the Christian community is yet again left at the bottom of the heap.
According to the Barnabas Fund, a charity which recently resettled some 50 Syrian Christian families in Poland, Mr Cameron’s policy inadvertently discriminates against the very Christian communities most victimised by the inhuman butchers of the so-called Islamic State. Christians are not to be found in the UN camps, because they have been attacked and targeted by Islamists and driven from them. They are seeking refuge in private homes, church buildings and with neighbours and family.
They are the most vulnerable and repeatedly targeted victims of this conflict. Indeed, a hundred years after the Armenian and Assyrian genocide, in which over a million Christians are estimated to have been killed by Ottoman Muslims, the same is happening today in the form of an ethnic cleansing of Christians in the region. Christians have been crucified, beheaded, raped, and subjected to forced conversion. The so-called Islamic State and other radical groups are openly glorifying the slaughter of Christians.
Britain should make Syrian Christians a priority because they are a particularly vulnerable group. Furthermore, we are a Christian nation with an established Church so Syrian Christians will find no challenge to integration. The churches are already well-prepared and eager to offer support and accommodation to those escaping the conflict.
Some will not like me saying this, but in recent years, there has been too much Muslim mass immigration to Europe. This has resulted in ghettos of Muslim communities living parallel lives to mainstream society, following their own customs and even their own laws. Isn’t it high-time instead for the oil-rich Gulf States to open their doors to the many Muslims who are fleeing conflict? Surely if they are concerned for fellow Muslims who prefer to live in Muslim-majority countries, then they have a moral responsibility to intervene.
It is, of course, quite right that Europe has woken to the sheer scale of human suffering in Syria. It is equally right that our compassionate instincts will drive us to fund-raise and campaign for the innocent victims of the conflict. But that compassion must be realistic and clear-headed.
As a European Union, we should be prepared to close the doors to large numbers of economic migrants and return them to their countries. A proper process of registration must be conducted, ideally in refugee camps on the borders of Europe. And if the numbers get too large, we should be prepared to admit refugees on a provisional and temporary basis, reviewing their status periodically until they can return home.
It’s not enough to send aid to refugee camps in the Middle East. There must be renewed military and diplomatic efforts to crush the twin menaces of Islamic State and al-Qaeda once and for all. Make no mistake: this may mean air strikes and other British military assistance to create secure and safe enclaves in Syria.
Lord Carey is a former archbishop of Canterbury.
Cecilia Ellis says
“Isn’t it high-time instead for the oil-rich Gulf States to open their doors to the many Muslims who are fleeing conflict?”
Yes . . . it is. Indeed, it’s past time. Strangely enough, those oil-rich Gulf State countries refuse to do so for fears of terrorism. Hmmmm . . . what is it about Islam that they understand, which Western cultures simply can’t put their finger on . . . ? Maybe Obama, Kerry or Cameron can instruct them on the peaceful nature of Islam.
PRCS says
“what is it about Islam that they understand, which Western cultures simply can’t put their finger on”
Good point.
I suspect that tribalism plays an essential part in their decision, too.
TheBuffster says
I wonder if those “oil rich Arab countries” – aside from protecting themselves from the terrorists who want to bring them down and incorporate them into the Islamic State – may fancy the idea of a Europe awash in Muslims? A Europe brought low by jihad?
Gail Griffin says
Check out Douglas Murray, The Umahh is a crock.
Truth Seeker says
Muslim Migration to Europe is a Well Planned Action of Jihad. Jihadis wear the Mask of Refugee. If this Migration is allowed in Muslim Countries, how to Islamise Europe?
Rich Islam Countries will financial Aids to the Settlement of these Jihadis in Europe and then for Construction of Mosques etc. Because those will help Jihad.
Rulers in the West try to Show they are are doing a Marvelous Action by giving Warm Welcome to Jihadi Migrants. But in reality they are on the way to Destruction of their Countries.
Godwin says
Yes, it is a slow suicide. These refugees are desperate for food, better housing n jobs. When these are not forth coming from the host countries, they will resort to crimes n jihad.

For those who haven’t seen ‘Dad’s Army’, a 1970s sitcom about the Home Guard in England during the Second World War, the Corporal Jones quote was from that series.
Lord Carey is absolutely correct and will be castigated according to the UK’s current mad ‘beyond PC’ approach.
Interestingly, he didn’t quote Jones’ fellow homeguardsman, private Frazer, the dour Scotsman’s catchphrase ——“Wur all dooomed, I tell ya, dooomed!”
Raja says
The West is so stupid that it cannot even criticize Saudi Arabia etc for letting in 0 refugee. It is already the scum of the world for promoting every form of Islam like Wahabism etc. If the sick man of Europe (Turkey) could kill a million Christians how much a rich man (Saudi) sitting on some 3 trillion dollars could kill or suffocate/choke ?
The West won’t realize the perils of Islam until they are on the throes of death. Sure, the West lack self respect and some spine.
Margaritha says
The much persecuted Christian refugees are left behind to suffer in Syria while the more affluent MUSLIM migrants, who pose as refugees flock into Germany, Austria, and Europe. These so called ‘refugees’ aim is to lead a carefree, affluent life in the west , and at the same time propagate Islam. The Germans were astonished to find the first batch of ‘refugees’ let into Germany ,and handed over spending money- most of the males headed to night clubs! Germany and Britain should make it a point to give priority to CHRISTIAN refugees, who are the most suffering and persecuted lot.
Charli Main says
But- but-but Margarita giving refuge to Middle Eastern Christians before the Muslims that have been terrorising them, would be racist, bigoted, xenophobic AND ISLAMOPHOBIC.
dumbledoresarmy says
You nailed it. The reaction of lots of high-minded humanitarian types when, on social media, the news broke that our government in Australia was proposing to bring Syrian Christians to the head of the queue. And when one of our more Islamosavvy journalists, Paul Sheehan, proposed an ‘Operation Rescue’ specifically targeting the Syrian Christians. And when our Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, bless him, who has been *listening* to the Syrian Catholic members of his flock, spoke up on the same topic, urging priority for the Christians.
Ooooh, the screams! The rage! The fury! The cries of ‘bigot!’ ‘racist!’ ‘discrimination’!
Never mind that, in every Muslim-dominated country, Christians and other non-Mulsims are always, always, always kicked to the back of the queue – as per the principle enunciated in the Hadith that tells Muslims to “push them [the Dhimmis] to the narrowest part of the road” – or off the end of the queue altogether.
Those very people who on behalf of any other minority/ oppressed groups would be all in favour of affirmative action, are having FITS at the very idea that there should be affirmative action for Syrian Christian refugees. You point out to them, or try to point out, that the Syrian Christians are a mortally-endangered indigenous people-group who will be EXTERMINATED wholesale if they are not gotten out of dodge, ASAP, and people just ignore it or pretend not to understand or just yell ‘racist!’ ‘bigot!’ “Islamophobe!” even louder.

Don´t blame “the Germans” in total, it´s our mad “mother of believers” (Merkel´s new title of honour by Muslims, no joke) and some (ok, many) deluded do-gooders. It´s so embarrassing, why can´t this nation just be normal. And it´s absolutely rght, it works like a magnet for so called refugees. Makes me sick…

Ex-Archbishop Carey is clearly criticising Islam by implication. There have been quite a few others who have done so, though overtly. They were almost all hounded by the UK establishment. Every one watch this space and see what happens to Dr. Carey.

Lord Carey is an EVANGELICAL.
In the line of Shaftsbury and Willberforce.
I hope the Agnostics and Atheists & others feel a bit better about Evangelicals now?

People are criticising Saudi Arab, that why she is not helping their Muslim brother refugees. because Saudis know that those refugees will become terrorist against indigenous population later on. Second reason is this that in Islam the concept of asylum do not exist and muslims do not trust each other.Europe will be in great trouble in near future.

While he’s right on his assertion, I wonder if he’d voice it if he were the current bishop of Canterbury.

I say this to Lord Carey …

5. The Lord God hath opened … thine …ear, … AND YOU WERE NOT REBELIOUS LORD CAREY … NEITHER DID YOU TURN AWAY BACK … LIFE HAS BEEN NICE TO YOU …RIDING ON GODS COATTAILS.

He is absolutely right! Mark my words: Europe is finished, done with. Swedes, Germans, Austrians, and France will pay dearly for their kind gesture of accepting these islamic hordes. UK is a bit insulated because of being an island nation.

“Swedes, Germans, Austrians, and France will pay dearly for their kind gesture of accepting these islamic hordes. UK is a bit insulated because of being an island nation.”
While UK may be, by virtue of its geographic location, insulated from having “migrants/refugees” swimming in from North Africa, they’ve been taking in Pakistani and Indian muslims from their former colonies for decades.

Everyone here who agrees with Dr Carey must share his article far and wide. If you are on social media, share it again and again. He has spoken the truth about the plight of the Syrian Christians. SUPPORT him.
Write to your politicians and your own religious leaders, and quote what Dr Carey has said, and *demand* that if your country is going to take in Syrian refugees, that the Syrian Christians must be given absolutely priority. Because they are in the same predicament that the Armenian Christians were in, during the genocidal assaults of the 1890s and 1915-1917 (and during the Armenian Genocide, the Assyrian communities within the Ottoman Empire were also targeted by the Muslims; the survivors called it the ‘Seyfo’, “Sword’, and it is estimated that 3/4 of the Assyrians then living, were killed…today’s Assyrians in Iraq and Syria descend from the 1/4 that survived and now the Muslims are having another go at wiping them out).
Recommend that the government, in order to weed out ‘fakes’, Muslims who may claim to be Christian, should liaise with Barnabas Fund, and people like Canon Andrew White and Sr Hatune Dogan, who have been working with the Syrian Christians for decades, and know exactly who is who. NO known Muslims should be permitted to be involved in any part of the selection and processing of those refugees, either here or over there. The Syrian Christian emigre communities in our various countries – in Australia, we have had Syrians here since the late 19th century – could also get involved, as they have remained in constant touch with relatives and the church leadership ‘back home’; and they have been trying to raise the alarm about this latest wave of genocidal assault by Muslims, for ages.
Linde Barrera says
To dumbledoresarmy- I love your post of 8:28 pm, Sep 8, 2015, I agree with it, and I will pray that your suggestion about the governments working with charitable organizations like Barnabas, Hatune, (I’m adding ACERO) will be a done deal. What Lord Carey states is 100% true. He has a clear head about the situation, God bless him. But I am beginning to think that PM David Cameron is a closet Muslim, and Chancellor Angela Merkel fancies herself as a “female caliph” with her adoration of all that is Islam. Being that I am a US citizen, I have suspected my president is also a closet Muslim, as his father was Muslim and so was his step-father. As for me, I will never convert to Islam. Peace to you.
Matthieu Baudin says
What courage and keen eye to detail.
There must be a few more major denominational church leaders with similar sentiment, looking for a lead from senior Christian figures like Mr Carey. Now is the time to speak up and be heard.
dumbledoresarmy says
And now is the time for every one of us in the pews who *has* informed ourselves, to make noise and push our own clergy to speak up. Let’s let them know what we know, and how we feel, and what we think ought to be done. We have to be persistent, loud (without being shrill) and determined, because the Useful Idiots in our ranks, right now, are also making a lot of noise and somehow we have to outflank them.
dumbledoresarmy says
by ‘the Useful Idiots’ in our ranks’, I meant, “the Useful Idiots within our churches”.

its about time that people in the west should stop being afraid
they should stand and demand the banning of Islam
Islam is absolutely incompatible to democracy to freedom and to western society values and way of life
not only that
it could have been no problem if the Muslims were living their life according to their retarded religion and not disturbing others
the major problem is that Islam in its core and basics its want to rule and dominate the whole world
and make all the others their slaves
therefore and since Islam has no capability of changing to behave like humans
the Western civilization has no take protective steps and ban Islam
this is the only way to prevent the extinction of Europe as we know it.

Stanley, You’re thinking of Rowan Williams, another former Archbishop of Canterbury who approved of the implementation of sharia law. Lord Carey has been speaking out plainly about Islam for years.
Paula Boddington says
Lord Carey seems to be the only person in any kind of leadership role in Britain who dares speak plainly on this topic. I heard him give an Easter sermon this year in which he talked about Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey – symbolising that he came in peace, since donkeys were animals used for work during peacetime, as opposed to horses which were used in war – and he had the guts to then say ‘at this point I must contrast Jesus with Mohammed’ and discussed the violent warmongering example that Mohammed set. Pity it’s against usual custom to clap in church, I would have given him a standing ovation.
Subhash Nair says
Fully agree with you, The decision to open the gates influenced by blurry thinking clouded by emotions can have catastrophic consequence in coming years. Of course no humans can deny not to be affected by the plight of a fellow suffering being. But then what is Europe getting into?
The more of what we see of this mass influx of this hoards marching into Europe, it seems that this crisis has been a well orchestrated plan to push these pawns into Europe.
And even for once we accept the arguments that you should allow these migrants in, then what are the consequences?
To understand the problem with Muslim migration as general, all you need to do is go back a 100 years. The pouring of Muslims from the commonwealth, the Turkish immigration into Germany, the Ghettos in Malmo or the population in a city like Barcelona.
These people though having resided in these nations for more than 3 to 4 decades, have hardly integrated and surprisingly the 2nd & 3rd generation in countries like Britain seems to have a new zeal to migrate to the land of the ISIS. So what we see here is that instead of having gratitude to a country which gave them asylum, they have absolute disgust and hatred towards these lands. How do you explain this mindset in a free world ?
Secondly, assuming that a socialist mindset is that a dwindling and greying population needs to pump up it’s working populace to maintain the state through taxes and national service. Even this wont work, since a majority of them will love to survive on doles and will always maintain & build trade within themselves so as to create benefits just for their community.
Expecting them to serve the armed forces or any national service of their newly adopted countries would be a big taboo issue, since they loyalties will always stop them from acting against any Islamic country.
And worst in coming years, they will create enough political traction and use the same democratic route to force their beliefs in their new land of residence.
What needs to be understood is that, to live in a democratically conducive way of life requires all its beneficiaries, to accept a crucial element of tolerance.
This element gets eroded when individuals or groups start asserting a sense of superiority and use it to alienate themselves from the rest of the population. Worse, it gets more toxic when the driving force for this alienation is religion.
Any democratic society and without exception the European intelligentsia does have an aversiveness to nationalism & have a great love for multiculturalism. They are not completely wrong in there thinking since tolerance creates the perfect society mankind can have. But for this thought and way of life to sustain, it can happen only in a society where complete integration and tolerance to all beliefs is accepted. Expecting these people to do that in coming years is a big question mark, simply because of there religious beliefs. History has shown that religious fanaticism is the end of a free society, and thats exactly what Europe is getting into.
Phillytheasp says
Well done Lord Carey, someone has been brave for a change. It’s so unusual here in the UK to see this. We struggle with the left wing press reporting and Islamic appeasement. Just look at the recent press release from the met police, ‘rise in Islamophobic hate crime’ when the even bigger rise in anti Semitic crime was ignored. These crimes are mostly reported by muslim women in full dress gear. Violence towards Jews is much more prevalent here. Look at the narrative that ensued following the photos of that poor toddler on the beach. It turns out the family had been living safely in Turkey for the last three years and daddy took them on a highly dangerous trafficking journey on a rickety boat from Bodrum to some even more economically viable option in Europe. There is mounting evidence that he wasn’t even on the boat, and sent the wife and kids ahead so they would be prioritized. Shame on him! That’s the real story, encouraging people to come to Europe with promises of a better life when they are perfectly safe where they are. And Turkey is a Muslim country! Will anyone in public life bring this up? They would be slaughtered and branded Islamophobic, insensitive and racist.
So Lord Carey has done something unusual and we should encourage these lone voices. Nowhere else have I seen the view that we should concentrate on rescuing Christians because they are being persecuted and driven out from Islamic dominated lands.
learn from history says
If we can’t learn from history we are doomed to repeat it. The first role of any government is to protect its borders. One history lesson that everyone should be aware of is Ancient Rome. Its borders were penetrated by barbarian tribes who wanted to settle in the safer and more prosperous Roman Empire.
They got their wish. .
Only problem was that it eroded thes confidence in the society. Those people already within the Empire stop paying taxes and lost the cohesivness to want to fight for their society. Your high end human capital flees..
iN the modern day parallel, confidence in France in particular is being eroded. They are up to 20% muslim…which basically means 15% of their population is claiming “social security” bleeding the society dry. On top of that the muslims there persecute the productive members (Jews) and as a result you have a society waiting to collapse. It is a tippng point of no return.France is finished unless it sends its muslim population back to North Africa.
frederick king says
I am not religious, in any way. Too many deaths and corruption associated with religious groups.
The christian groups of the middle east are the most persecuted but the ISIS animals, and should certainly be at the top of the list for refugee status. These people will more readily assimilate into western culture, and are unlikely to contain muslim terrorists. The muslims need to go to muslim countries, the Christians to christian countries, until their homes are stable.
Blitz2b says
Can someone please send a transcript of Lord Carey’s speech to the Pope, who despite being highly influencial has done absolutely nothing for the suffering persecuted Syrian Christians, rather he has become increasingly a spokesman for Islam and voicing concern for the countless Muslim immigrants streaming across into Europe.

Well someone is wanting war in Europe and of course that has been around for quite a while since basically the age turned with the Berlin wall going down and the Soviet Union finally unravelled the Germans got their country back border wise though much of east Prussia was lost to the Poles and yes Poland got its country back and needless to say Russia got what I would describe true sovereignty back… While Islam has been chipping away at the infidel countries ever since the political death sex cult certainly made its statement clearly and boldly with the twin towers coming down…
Now the Isis has entered on to the world stage with confidence and adhering to the purity of the the warlord characteristics of its founder and followers… So these Mohammedans have choose to personify Muhammad and anyone that may have been friend or foe must adhere emphatically and if not they deal with them ruthlessly and that includes children being beheaded, burnt and crucified….
Do many of these Mohammedans who are fleeing Syria want to be part the Isis deal ? no though there will be those that come through to the host countries will be adherents to carry on the agenda of Isis… But in reality all the Mohammedans carry with them the evil cult with them as did the rats that carried the fleas that in turn carried the disease that carried the plague that killed countless millions of people where ever the rats spread to …. This is the best way to illustrate or allegorize what is happening today in Europe today and has happened throughout the earth for 1400 years with the death of hundreds of millions of people including the so called followers of Mohammad ….
The historian of Islam through his research has discovered that 60,000,000 Christians died to Islam and double that the Negro people of Africa over the history of Islam till today each year 100,000 Christians are being slaughtered by these Mohammedans …. So what holds for the for the secular and Christian people of Europe now with these people expecting special privileges and the enforcement of their Sharia laws … well it is very clear to me the out break of war you could say WW 3 doesn’t that make you smile 🙁 …
The reality is that Islam is a supremacist political cult non democratic and does not hold to the golden rule it is dualistic one law for me and another for you that takes away the Christian human rights to the point of death if able to be implemented and deemed the best option if the infidels are unable to pay the increased tax burden demanded of them…….. so to summarize war is eminent sooner rather than later between these two cultures and that could me the death to millions sad to say

It’s not often that an Archbishop of Canterbury, or in this case a former Archbishop of Canterbury, says something sensible. But Dr. Carey is certainly saying something sensible here.

Most Christians are oblgated to show compassion to all. But the problem with Islam is that it is innately hostile to the West, which is based on a Judeo Christian ethic. This is the dilemma that we face. Out of compassion we take them in and when all the fuss has died down we are left with a sizeable minority of people who want to impose their religion and culture on us. The problem with Muslims is not how many are actively involved in terrorism, which is very small. But how many, although law abiding in their ordinary lives, actually support terrorism. I do not know if this true but I read that about 20% of British Muslims supported the London bombings. This is quite worrying.
Raja says
Sure the West is free to accept any number immigrants in their lands. What is tantalizingly attractive is cheap labor that comes with it. Muslims go to UK etc because they get the best of the worlds.
