Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Muslim NYU prof: Jihadis hate the U.S. because of Israel

Sep 12, 2015 2:58 pm By Robert Spencer

Alnaemi’s answers here are slick and often quite dishonest by omission, but still at times revealing. He says jihad is “mostly for defense,” thereby leaving the door open to offensive jihad. In the main, with his finger-pointing he provides yet another example of how colleges are today dreary centers of anti-American indoctrination, not centers of genuine intellectual exploration. Much more below.

AliAdeebAlnaemi

“Deciphering Jihad: A chat with NYU Prof. Ali Adeeb Alnaemi,” by Gary Levine, Naples Herald, September 10, 2015:

…For purposes of clarification, I visited the Islamic Supreme Council web site to find a definitive explanation of “Jihad.”

According to the site, “The Arabic word “jihad” is often translated as “holy war,” but in a purely linguistic sense, the word “jihad” means struggling or striving.”

“In a religious sense, as described by the Quran and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (s), “jihad” has many meanings. It can refer to internal as well as external efforts to be a good Muslims or believer, as well as working to inform people about the faith of Islam. If military jihad is required to protect the faith against others, it can be performed using anything from legal, diplomatic and economic to political means. If there is no peaceful alternative, Islam also allows the use of force, but there are strict rules of engagement. Innocents – such as women, children, or invalids – must never be harmed, and any peaceful overtures from the enemy must be accepted.”

The Council additionally indicates that “Jihad is not a violent concept. Jihad is not a declaration of war against other religions. It is worth noting that the Quran specifically refers to Jews and Christians as ‘people of the book’ who should be protected and respected. All three faiths worship the same God. Allah is just the Arabic word for God, and is used by Christian Arabs as well as Muslims.”

Whoa! Clearly, the acts and behaviours demonstrated by Islamic extremists do not adhere to these teachings.

“It is worth noting that the Quran specifically refers to Jews and Christians as ‘people of the book’ who should be protected and respected,” says the Islamic Supreme Council. But this is what the Qur’an also says: ““Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” (Qur’an 9:29)

I sought to learn more and perhaps obtain an understanding of that which is unfolding in Syria, Iraq and other Middle-Eastern regions. To do so, I reached out to NYU Professor Ali Adeeb Alnaemi, a wealth of knowledge in the areas of Middle Eastern politics. Having worked as the News Editor for the New York Times Baghdad Bureau, as an Arabic language instructor and writer for a number of publications, I was confident that he could offer clarity to a poorly understood crisis.

Gary Levine: Professor Alnaemi…most Westerners have a finite understanding…perhaps a misunderstanding…of the Quran. We try to contemplate the violence performed in the name of the Quran…and wonder how messages from God could be so skewed by violent Islamic jihadists. The Quran states “do not cause corruption on the earth.” Can you shed any light on the mentality behind all of this aggression?

Professor Ali Adeeb Alnaemi: “Skewing the meaning of the verses of the Quran is a result of a preconceived intention to manipulate religion for political purposes. For example, there are verses in the Quran that talk about war against infidels and encourages the Prophet and the Muslims to fight them to spread the word of God. But these verses talking about “Jehad” were restricted by the circumstances and the time period. The interpreters of the Quran and most of the scholars say that these verses of Jehad have to be under the control of government nowadays. It is similar to saying that we have to fight terrorism, but should the defense department do it or should Americans simply carry weapons and kill whoever they think is a terrorist without any rules or restrictions?

“The interpreters of the Quran and most of the scholars say that these verses of Jehad have to be under the control of government nowadays.” That actually refers only to offensive jihad, which according to Islamic law is up to the caliph to call. But in the absence of a caliph, defensive jihad must be waged by every Muslim if a Muslim land is attacked.

Bulghah al-Salik li-Aqrab al-Masalik fi madhhab al-Imam Malik (“The Sufficiency of the Traveller on the Best Path in the School of Imam Malik,”) says this: “Jihad in the Path of Allah, to raise the word of Allah, is fard kifayah [obligatory on the community] once a year, so that if some perform it, the obligation falls from the rest. It becomes fard `ayn [obligatory on every Muslim individually], like salah and fasting, if the legitimate Muslim Imam declares it so, or if there is an attack by the enemy on an area of people.”

The Hanafi, Maliki, and Shafi’i schools of Sunni jurisprudence further declare that jihad, once it is fard ‘ayn, is no different from prayer and fasting — in other words, to engage in warfare with non-Muslims in that case is a religious devotion that cannot lawfully be evaded. Hashiyah Ibn `Abidin, an authoritative text of the Hanafi school, says that jihad is “fard ‘ayn if the enemy has attacked part of the Islamic homeland. It thus becomes an obligation like salah [prayer] and fasting which cannot be abandoned.”

In sum, then, Islamic law does indeed provide justification for individual Muslims committing acts of jihad, without permission from a government.

The way ISIS has interpreted the Quran ignores the rules that Islamic scholars have put in place for the past 14 centuries of their work. Jehad should be mostly for defense not as an aggression. People of the book, which is a description of the Jews and Christians, should be treated with respect and can keep their faith without exerting any pressure on them. Waging any war has to be the responsibility of the ruler and not just a random call by anyone. Of course they consider Baghdadi as their ruler but this is an issue for debate. The scholars who provide the ideological basis for ISIS have ignored these rules and took only the literal interpretation of the verses and made it even legitimate to kill Muslims who disagree with them, let alone people of other religions.”

“Jehad should be mostly for defense not as an aggression.” Note how carefully the professor is speaking: if jihad is “mostly” for defense,” then apparently there are circumstances under which aggression is permitted. But he doesn’t explain that. And he doesn’t mention that the “respect” supposedly owed to the People of the Book does not preclude their paying the jizya and accepting second-class dhimmi status, as per Qur’an 9:29.

Gary Levine: ISIS/ISIL has chosen to destroy artifacts in the Mosul Museum…the Temple of Bel…wall carvings…to name a few. Can you help us understand the reasoning behind the destruction of these treasures…some of which are UNESCO Heritage Sites?

Professor Ali Adeeb Alnaemi: “The destruction of these artifacts is part of the Wahhabi sect which follows a very strict interpretation of polytheism. The founder of this sect, Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab (1703-1791) destroyed all the shrines in the Arab peninsula in the eighteenth century that were built on the graves of the companions of the prophet claiming that people were worshipping them instead of God. Therefore, all other statues of old Roman Gods, Buddha statues and any other artifacts belonging to older religions are consider symbols of polytheism.

We only can wonder why early Muslims who accompanied the prophet and took the teaching directly from him allowed these artifacts to remain intact in the countries thy conquered in the early years of the Islamic state. ISIS militants are definitely not more religious than early Muslims. This is simply an evidence of how skewed their understanding of Islam is.”

“We only can wonder why early Muslims who accompanied the prophet and took the teaching directly from him allowed these artifacts to remain intact in the countries thy conquered in the early years of the Islamic state.” Maybe they lacked the means to do otherwise. But the destroyers have justification within Islamic texts. A hadith has Muhammad saying: “Do not leave any image without defacing it or any built-up grave without leveling it” (Sahih Muslim 969).

Gary Levine: There are quite a few Islamic terrorist groups functioning around the world…ISIS/ISIL, the Haqqani Network, Kataib Hezbollah, to name a few. They possess a discernible hatred for the United States and the West. Can you clarify the basis for this hatred?

Professor Ali Adeeb Alnaemi: “The hatred started earlier in the Arab world because of the unconditional American support to Israel. The war on Afghanistan and Iraq and its poor planning and catastrophic results made things worse and showed that the US is targeting Muslims around the world. Moreover, the US is accused of supporting corrupt dictatorships in the Middle East that oppress people and deprive them of their basic political and human rights. Therefore, the only way to fight all of that is to rebel against the US and its agents in the region using extreme religious interpretations hoping to go back in time and build a superpower for Muslims like the Ummayad or the Abbasid states.”…

You see, it’s all the fault of U.S. foreign policy, not the jihad imperative. The subtext is that if the U.S. would change its policies to suit Muslims, the jihad would disappear. But it wouldn’t, because even as Alnaemi has acknowledged, it is “mostly” (which is in itself debatable) but not entirely defensive. And what about all the jihad warfare that conquered lands all over the world long before there was a State of Israel, or a United States of America? What about the jihadis who are fighting against unbelievers thousands of miles from Israel?

There is great and immediate need for a thorough cleanup in America.

While I am up for free speech, I am not up for free brainwashing against democracy and freedom. One cannot have freedom to attack freedom, even if it sounds contradictory.

Therefore, Islam should be banned in North America, their leaders and their kuffar mouthpieces investigated for foreign bank accounts or illegal incomes, and jailed, All communist, socialist and other anti-democratic elements should be removed from the chairs of universities and from every important position.
These people work together to undermine our freedom and democracy, and destroy our countries.

If it is the true that Christians and Jews should be “protected and respected,” one must wonder why there are currently none in Saudi Arabia, and why there is the ban on any non-believers (in Islam) to visit their “holy” places (Mecca and Medina)?

The following commentary is as close to an “official” definition of jihad as we can get. It is contained in the footnotes of the ‘The Noble Quran’, which is the translation distributed by the Saudis in millions of copy, a footnote to the mentioned Quran 2:190 (verse of the sword) explains it in detail:

“Jihad is holy fighting in Allah’s Cause with FULL FORCE OF NUMBERS OF NUMBERS AND WEAPONRY. It is given the utmost importance in Islam and is one of its pillars. By Jihad Islam is established, Allah’s Word is made superior (which means only Allah has the right to be worshiped), and Islam is propagated. By abandoning Jihad Islam is destroyed and Muslims fall into an inferior position; their honor is lost, THEIR LANDS ARE STOLEN, their rule and authority vanish. Jihad is an obligatory duty in Islam on every Muslim. He who tries to escape from this duty, or does not fulfill this duty, dies as a hypocrite.”

Yeah, right — like we did when we helped the Afghans against the Sovs in the ’80s, the Kuwaitis against Saddam in ’91, tried to get humanitarian supples to the Somalis in ’93, bombed the Serbs in ’95 to save the Bosniaks, bombed them again in ’99 to save the Kosovars, toppled the Taliban in ’01 and Saddam in ’03, etc., etc., ad nauseam. Plus we open our doors to Muslims by the tens of thousands, even as the Christians they attack are left stranded by our Islam-friendly State Department.

And wait’ll you see what the Hilly-hag has in store …

Gary Levine did not do justice to his interview with ‘professor’ Alnaemi because he did not challenge each and every deceiving statement he uttered

No Muslim will ever tell the TRUTH about the TRUE intentions of Islam to literally eradicate every other belief system on Earth and bring ALL of humanity under the abyss of Sharia. Ali is lying throughout the interview as he MUST!

The word Jihad in the Arabic language has its root in JAHADA which does mean Struggle/ Endeavour/ Strive

Unfortunately, those who explain it in SPIRITUAL terms are deliberately deceiving and misleading the public about its actual meaning based entirely upon the Arabic language of the Quran and the Hadiths.

In innumerable verses in the Quran and the Hadiths JIHAD means only ONE thing:

“PHYSICAL WARFARE in the cause of Allah” which in Arabic it is:

    “Jihad fi Sabil^Allah”

Most human beings, whether followers of Muhammad or not, do not know that Muhammad UNILATERALLY declared TOTAL and ETERNAL war, 1400 years ago, against ALL UNSUSPECTING Human Beings who do not believe as he does.

Contrary to all the falsified assertions by politically correct westerners and aided and abetted by Muhammadans who have every reason to hide the truth, Jihad is not a SPIRITUAL STRUGGLE for excellence but a CONTINUOUS WAR against all so called UNBELIEVERS until all of humanity is either converted to Muhammadan Islam, is subject to it or is SLAUGHTERED.

In fact, among Muslim scholars, it constitutes the unwritten SIXTH PILLAR OF MUHAMMADAN ISLAM.

Muhammad’s Quran and the Hadiths are crystal clear in affirming this. The Quran and Hadiths contain hundreds of verses attesting to and asserting this DOGMA.

I offer the ‘professor’ $100,000 if he can find a single verse in Muhammad’s Quran proving Jihad is a ‘spiritual’ struggle to commune with God!

All the derivatives of the word JIHAD in the Quran and Hadiths represent ACTS of WAR and AGGRESSION to spread the belief in Allah AND in Muhammad as the messenger of Allah.

If Jihad were DEFENSIVE, why then did the Arabs conquer Europe, India, China & North Africa who had no aggression with the Arabian Peninsula?

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.50 Narrated by Anas bin Malik
“The Prophet said, ‘A single endeavor of fighting in Allah’s Cause {Qital fi Sabil Allah} (JIHAD) is better than the world and whatever is in it.'”

Sahih Muslim Hadith 4631 & 4626 Abu Huraira
“I heard Muhammad say: … I love that I should be killed in Allah’s Cause [Jihad]; then I should be brought back to life and be killed again in Allah’s Cause [Jihad].'”

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.73 Narrated by Abdullah bin Abi Aufa
Allah’s Apostle said, “Know that Paradise is under the shades of swords.”

It is a pity when one interviews such despicable, mendacious and evil ‘academics’ and NOT prove them wrong on the spot. After all these interviews have to be either recorded or videoed!

and the only reason it is not the written sixth pillar is because, someday, the jihad could in theory come to a conclusion when the entire earth is Dar al-Islam. There is also the evidence of Islamic jurisprudence which demonstrate clearly the controlling definition of Jihad is (literal) warfare against non-Muslims. The professor should also have to explain the specific use of the term “qital” in so many jihad verses, often translated as “fighting” but more accurately translated as “kill, massacre, or slaughter.” Or jihads like the one against South Sudan (and so many others) having nothing to do with either Israel or America, just kaffirs. Or why Jews were hated prior to 1948. Or why the Hamas Charter says what it says about that land being an Islamic “waqf”- religious endowment, meaning it’s not a political dispute at all. Or what the Muslim Brotherhood was founded for. In 1928. Let alone all the previous centuries of the Same Thing. Over and over again.

“If there is no peaceful alternative, Islam also allows the use of force, but there are strict rules of engagement. Innocents – such as women, children, or invalids – must never be harmed, and any peaceful overtures from the enemy must be accepted.”

If there is no alternative, meaning if the kind offer to convert to Islam is refused, or if voluntary (under threat of death) subjugation is declined. Followed by the usual baloney about “innocents” which has never held true, except in bizzaro-Muslim contortions to define innocence, or collateral damage (“they are among them”), nor are there ever been punishments for the breach of these “strict rules” (like not burning people, they are more like suggestions than rules). Not to mention the real command from the Qur’an : “Be not weary and faint-hearted, crying for peace, when ye should be uppermost (Shakir: “have the upper hand”) for Allah is with you” (47:35) and “It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allah ‘s enemies] in the land.”

Islam also allows the use of force, but there are strict rules of engagement. Innocents – such as women, children, or invalids – must never be harmed

Because women and children are to be taken as slaves. In any case, there’s writing like this hadith:

“the Prophet of Allah (may peace be upon him), when asked about the women and children of the polytheists being killed during the night raid, said: “They are from them.”

Gary Levine: Professor Alnaemi…most Westerners have a finite understanding…perhaps a misunderstanding…of the Quran.

Which I’m sure it has nothing to do with seeing muslims all over the world – North to South, East to West – quoting from the quran to justify killing, raping, stoning, chopping limbs, etc., right?

Professor Ali Adeeb Alnaemi: “Skewing the meaning of the verses of the Quran is a result of a preconceived intention to manipulate religion for political purposes. For example, there are verses in the Quran that talk about war against infidels and encourages the Prophet and the Muslims to fight them to spread the word of God. But these verses talking about “Jehad” were restricted by the circumstances and the time period.

Funny thing. All the qurans I’ve read contained something along the lines of “the quran contains the perfect word of allah, which is valid for all times“. I never, ever – not even once – read a quran that said something like “the quran contains the timeless word of allah, which is valid for all times, except for such and such parts, which were restricted to specific situations and time periods“.

The quran was “revealed” over 22 years. There’s not much wiggle room.

Disinformation is defined as “misinformation that is DELIBERATELY disseminated in order to influence or CONFUSE rivals (foreign enemies or business competitors etc.) misinformation – information that is INCORRECT.

Professor Ali Adeeb Alnaemi presents a ‘reformed’ and ‘modernized’ version of Islam that no Muslim believed until the last 150 years. His version is similar to that of Ahmadiyya which is heretical.

Professor Ali Adeeb Alnaemi’s version of Islam is ‘bida’ (innovation) and therefore he should be executed for changing Islam.

Islam is spiritual fascism and one knows this or should know it. I am repulsed by it. All sensible and knowledgeable people should be. It is a disgusting excuse for a religion and it is an inveterate enemy of liberty. It needs to be despised and not accepted or excused.

    Route 66

What is so special, so unique about the Bible that Christians believe it is literally the inspired word of God? Look at the following facts about the Bible:

First, the Bible is not just one single book. This is a more common misconception than many people realize, especially with people who do not come from a Judeo-Christian background. Rather than being a single book, the Bible is actually a collection of 66 books, which is called the canon of scriptures. These 66 books contain a
variety of genres: history, poetry, prophecy, wisdom literature, letters, and apocalyptic just to name a few.

Second, these 66 books were written by 40 different authors. These authors came from a variety of backgrounds: shepherds, fishermen, doctors, kings, prophets, and others. And most of these authors never knew one another personally.

Third, these 66 books were written over a period of 1500 years. Yet again, this is another reminder that many of these authors never knew or collaborated with one another in writing these books.

Fourth, the 66 books of the Bible were written in 3 different languages. In the Bible we have books that were written in the ancient languages of Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic; a reflection of the historical and cultural circumstances in which each of these
    books were written.

And finally, these 66 books were written on 3 different continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe. Once again, this is a testament to the varied historical and cultural circumstances of God’s people.

Think about the above realities: 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1500 years, in 3 different languages, on 3 different continents. What’s more, this collection of books shares a common story line – the creation, fall, and redemption of God’s people; a common theme – God’s universal love for all of humanity; and a common message – salvation is available to all who repent of their sins and commit to following God with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength.

In addition to sharing these commonalities, these 66 books contain no historical errors or contradictions. God’s word truly is an amazing collection of writings!
