In PJ Media today I discuss how, as usual, Obama has assumed that Americans are bigots before the contrary facts were in about Ahmed Mohamed’s suspicious-looking device and uncooperative behavior.
Ahmed Mohamed, 14, a freshman at MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas, had a mind for gadgetry and a great idea: he would build his own working clock and take it to school on Monday to show an engineering teacher. “It was the first time,” he said, “I brought an invention to school to show a teacher.” But everything went terribly, terribly wrong: Islamophobic teachers took his innocuous clock for a bomb and went so far as to have him arrested. All is well now, however, as the civil rights group CAIR and Barack Obama have stepped in, Ahmed’s persecutors have egg on their racist faces, and Ahmed has been invited to the White House.
That’s the narrative that was everywhere Wednesday (Vox’s headline was typical of the spin: “Muslim ninth grader arrested for bringing an electronics project to school”), but as with so many such stories, it is full of holes.
His clock, a busy gadget of circuits and wires without either a conventional clock face or a digital display, looked more like a bomb than like a clock. Irving police said that Ahmed carried his homemade clock to school in a briefcase; once there, he plugged it in during English class, and it began making noise.
If he took it in to school to show it to an engineering teacher, why did he plug it in during English class? What kind of clock makes noise, other than ticking?
(Pictured: Mohamed’s not-at-all suspicious, appropriate-for-English-class device)
The principal, the school resource officer, and police questioned him, according to WFAA:
[O]fficers said Ahmed was being “passive aggressive” in his answers to their questions, and didn’t have a “reasonable answer” as to what he was doing with the case. Investigators said the student told them that it was just a clock that he was messing around with.
Irving police officer James McLellan remarked:
We attempted to question the juvenile about what it was and he would simply only say it was a clock. He didn’t offer any explanation as to what it was for, why he created this device, why he brought it to school.
Why this reticence? Why didn’t Ahmed tell McLellan what he so readily told the international media: that he loved building things and had brought the clock to school to show to an engineering teacher?
In any case, he didn’t. After he was arrested (and released without charge), the Islamic victimhood machine kicked into high gear. Ahmed’s father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, lamented:
He just wants to invent good things for mankind. But because his name is Mohamed and because of Sept. 11, I think my son got mistreated.
Alia Salem, executive director of the North Texas chapter of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations, declared:
This all raises a red flag for us: how Irving’s government entities are operating in the current climate.
Barack Obama himself got into the act, tweeting to Ahmed:
Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.
Clearly Ahmed Mohamed is the victim of the hour, and the mainstream media will be celebrating him, and lamenting the alleged plight of Muslims in America, for a considerable time to come.
But what, really, did MacArthur High School officials and the Irving Police do wrong?
All over the country, school officials are on constant high alert for weapons — a high alert that has more than once spilled over into outright hysteria, with students being suspended for drawing guns, pointing fingers at people and saying “Bang,” etc.
Check the record. The alert has been universal. It doesn’t just single out Muslim students.
The key question here is whether Ahmed Mohamed would have been arrested if he had been a non-Muslim student and had brought the same contraption to school. Without any doubt, yes, he would have been.
However, CAIR and Obama are both avid to reinforce the narrative that Muslims are innocent victims of unjust suspicion. CAIR wants and needs “hate crimes” against Muslims, because they are the currency they use to buy power and influence in our victimhood-oriented society, and to deflect attention away from jihad terror and onto Muslims as putative victims….

Why? The little jerk did it for the attention he knew he would get, no doubt with the help of his parents, now they will have a lawsuit and no doubt they’ll win it. I wonder if any of the non-Muslim students have won any lawsuits or if they even filed any, such as the kid who made the shape of a gun from a slice of pizza he was eating.
Cecilia Ellis says
Jack, Ahmed’s parents probably felt the need to start setting aside some money for Ahmed’s college fund . . . a lawsuit will go a long way in acquiring significant financial support for Ahmed’s continued education. Remember his name . . . in just a few years, you will hear it again in headlines that read, “Muslim Inventor Awarded Nobel Prize for Discovering Fire for the Second Time.”

What about all the other kids across America who also disrupt classes and cause chaos with their pranks and practical jokes? Don’t they get to go to the White House to be celebrated, too? This is the insanity of the Obama regime era.

Bombs have clocks, too. This Muslim kid should have been more forthcoming with his answers to the school and police when questioned. But, if a school can suspend a child for chewing a pop-tart into a questionable shape, a questionable electronic device should certainly be handled with MORE concern. After all, no pop-tart has yet ever been used to kill anyone – unidentifiable electronic devices have! Screw the kid, his father, CAIR, Obama and all the other Islamists who think the WH would let the device past WH security if he just showed up with it there.

This smart alek who refused to give the police the information they sought was doing it on purpose. These muslims are in close contact with cair…cair looks for things they can sue over and things which make muslims look like poor innocent victims of prejudice even when no law suit is possible or likely.
it is all part of their plan to take over, to ruin society, to stop freedom of speech and to make teachers, law enforcement, government officials and average citizens afraid to speak up when they know the culprit or suspect is muslim.
He’s a brat. His explanation was that he didn’t “think” it looked like a bomb. He knew what it was and the reasons…the real reasons he didn’t want to admit…he gave the media for having taken it to school. He plugged it in while in class. He knew it would beep and alarm the teacher. That was his goal, added to the fact that now he will be *above suspicion* where this school and police department are concerned, even if they believe otherwise. They will hesitate to do anything if he makes trouble again and that hesitation just may get someone killed.

ROBERT SUPERBLY COVERS THE USUAL LYING HYSTERIA ABOUT THIS BUT LET ME ADD A NICKEL’S WORTH OF ANALYSIS.
What is the definition of a clock ?
1. A clock “tells time”.
2. It does that by using one or more of several methods:
A. Numeral dial and hands
B. Electronic digital display
C. Pre-recorded voice announcements
D. Chimes, bells, noises in appropriate QUANTITY
From the several articles I’ve read, the device in question emitted a single “beep” which was heard by a teacher, who, upon seeing the contents of Ahmed’s valise (or whatever it was) then told him not to show it to anyone.
Later, the device made another electronic sound, which then led to LEA intervention. So Ahmed made an ELECTRONIC INTERVAL MEASURER that did not “tell time”. Those are essential parts of bombs, to initiate pre-chosen moments for detonation.
* * * * Uber-Leftist billionaires like Facebook CEO Zuckerberg jump in to demonstrate his idiocy, but Good Bye if he declares Hebraic faith or heritage on any Muslim Middle East street corner. As Pam Geller has written extensively, self-hating Jews abound . . .

Westman says
The strange thing about all the hysteria about this clock is that almost every one of the students is carrying a cell phone which would be far more reliable as a remote trigger device or a timer.
I respectfully suggest that all cell phones be checked into the office each school day.
This is in the spirit of Edward Teller who once remarked, “In sleeping with a woman, one gets slightly less radioactivity than from a nuclear reactor; but to sleep with two woman is very, very dangerous.”

Do you know the tragic facts regarding why the marriage of eminent cosmologist & ego maniac Carl Sagan and his ultra-hot wife finally ended ? They had a fundamental disagreement about the Big Bang.

That certainly applies to the Quran. Then there are Western leaders, silver-tongued orators with nothing behind the veneer, informed by an army of taxpayer-funded opinion-compliant minions, whose primary objective is remaining in the eye of, and the wallet of, the public.

The science teacher advised Ahmed not to show this device around the school.
Why that advice?
Because it looks like a suitcase bomb of some sort — especially to an English teacher. I should know! I am an English teacher!
Teachers are advised, “If you see something, say something.”
Now, let’s see what happens to the teacher(s) who showed concern about this device.
And one more thing….Does Ahmed have an axe to grind with the English teacher?

“And one more thing….Does Ahmed have an axe to grind with the English teacher?”
A very good question.
Always On Watch says
It is my understanding that the beep sounded during 6th period, toward the end of the day. In English class.
Why didn’t that beep sound earlier? Was the device in his locker for a time? If so, why did he take it out to bring to English class.
I also notice an ac cord on the device.
Unless the device also has some sort of alternate battery power, the only ways that the beep would wound are (1) the device was plugged into a power supply or an outlet or (2) the device was disconnected from a power supply and then beeped — much like some microwaves and FIOS packs will beep when the power goes off due to an electrical outage.

There’s a 9V battery connector on the left side.

Exactly so. Even if they are not “disciplined” in some way, they will be branded as “islamophobes”. A news program I listened to yesterday said the teacher had “failed their students”.
What will happen the next time something suspicious appears? The teachers *might* say something–or they might remember how their colleagues were smeared and shamed here, and just let the incident go–no matter how much it endangers them and their kids.
This is, in fact, the whole goal of this appalling exercise from CAIR.
EYESOPEN says
Exactly. Wouldn’t it be ironic if what the little punk brought to the WH was something more than just a “clock”?
Nate Krummholtz says
“His clock, a busy gadget of circuits and wires without either a conventional clock face or a digital display, looked more like a bomb than like a clock.”
In fact, it has a digital display. It’s the red box at the top, which has four 8-segment displays. It’s just not illuminated.
Pere LaChaise says
Thanks, Nate for allowing some fresh air into the overheated confines of this klatsch. OF course, anything CAIR says is takfir and cannot be taken at face value. Their presence always muddles issues and bends outcomes to favor their Islamist cause. But TX school authorities and the cops they continually call on, also have very bad attitudes. I think in this case we have a sandwich of southron urge to dominate dark people, their urge to dominate students and then their fear of 14 yr olds, plus terrorism fears triggered by names like Ahmed Mohammed. They would have done the same stupid and wussy things to a white or black kid, I am sure. But their panic might have been less acute if the kid looked like Dylan Roof.
TX and FL have continually been in the news for similar incidents of overt authoritarianism over students, usually of color. The particulars of this one are more maddening than many because the imputation of threat is so far-fetched. Obviously, the school and police authorities had a strong desire to determine the clock as a weapon, because they see all independent thought as a threat to their authority which must be put down in a very public way demonstrating the futility of ‘rebellion against authority’. The boy may have been cheeky but the unofficial report of his behavior as passive-aggressive is completely unreliable, coming from cops who routinely use violence in counter-productive ways. I see no mention of a trip to the Principal’s office – sounds like the dumb English teechur called the cops first and then they gave Ahmed the 3rd degree – like they wanted a confession, not an explanation of a non-threat.
Police these days show all the thuggish behavior of enforcers of an unpopular oligarchic overlordship, not protectors and servitors of public order. In daily cases, they create chaos and sow death among the poor, and especially black people.
It’s a pity that this case will go into CAIR’s folio assembled to prove America’s ‘islamophobia’ when it’s really a case of simple authoritarianism.

Cicero says
(1) Electronic clock sets virtually identical to this one have been around for decades. Assembly requires minimum skill, basically connecting a power supply and one or two switches.
(2) What is wrong with the entire picture is that Ahmed Mohammed went out of his way mount this pre-bought device into a travel-type case rather than the type of case that is typically used for electronic devices.
(3) The gratuitous use of the travel case, Ahmed Mohammed’s carefully planned actions in scaring an ignorant English teacher (after being specifically warned not to draw attention) and the immediate appearance of be-hijabed CAIR witches shows beyond a peradventure of a doubt that the entire spectacle was carefully concocted with active involvement by CAIR officers.
LEGAL NOTE: Helping a client plan a FUTURE crime is NOT protected by attorney-client privilege.
(4) It is ridiculous to claim that Ahmed Mohammed is an “inventor.” He put together a pre-assembled electronic kit as millions of American boys have done before him. Only a wholly un-American person like Barry 0-bama could possibly play along with this ridiculous charade of Ahmed as a Muslim “inventor.”
(5) America has real inventors even at this age, but they don’t spend their time concocting victim spectacles, and for that reason do not get invited to a White House where “science” is just a branch of propaganda. Real teenage inventors are not invited to 0-bama’s White House because their presence wouldn’t advance the totalitarian “narrative.”

Thanks, Graven. I hadn’t yet seen the fawning media coverage, and the kid’s on-camera admission that he knows exactly what he’s doing:
“I’ve seen Mark Zuckerberg, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and I am pleased that they are part of the action, the movement, to get rid of everything that has been happening, not just to me, but to other people around the entire globe.”
Brat-jihadists running circles around the dhim-media.

Media, media, media the jihadist use it so well…..I think this event really exposes the surrounding characters Ob and his Cair group…..repeating endlessly their victim status to get the emotions of the public to hate us “racist” infidels….if that didn’t work they could not work.
EYESOPEN says
“However, CAIR and Obama are both avid to reinforce the narrative that Muslims are innocent victims of unjust suspicion. CAIR wants and needs “hate crimes” against Muslims, because they are the currency they use to buy power and influence in our victimhood-oriented society, and to deflect attention away from jihad terror and onto Muslims as putative victims….”
That about says it all right there Robert.

This so called clock is another dry run. Like the Minneapolis imams. I have always admired the actor James Woods who tried to warn of a dry run right before 9/11 and he was ignored. I can only imagine his own personal hell. Knowing that he was right and despite his warnings almost 4000 people died. From every corner of the earth.

The age of professional Muslim victim hood. Don’t underestimate him. I know people in college that had sex changes so that they could qualify for scholarships and meet diversity quotas at major companies – that they otherwise couldn’t get into. There are a lot of ambitious and clever young people out there, and if they aren’t, the parents certainly are. I’m sure this event will serve as a wonderful addition to his academic package for MIT.

You would have to be a severely uneducated person to think that device is anything other than a clock.
The cowardice and ignorance that is modern America is the reason we are heading for our doom.

to Mike, who sez “You would have to be a severely uneducated person to think that device is anything other than a clock.”
Are you kidding me, Mike? Did you observe the pictures of that “clock” and a suitcase bomb next to it?
I would NEVER at first glance recognize that rotten kid’s “invention” as a clock. I’ve been around the block once or twice, and I am not “severely uneducated”, so I’m wondering who the heck you are and why you wrote that offensive and ill-conceived comment. Cheers! Quotha R

No, not really. There’s a difference between not knowing about electronics and being “severely uneducated”.

Civil violence and terror is no big deal for the president. Obama went to grade school in Jakarta, Indonesia. He moved there in Oct 1967, not long after the Indonesian killings of 1965–1966 in which more than 500,000 people were killed.

I can’t tell from news reports, was young muhamid doings part of a class assignment? Or was it a religious exercise? Was his quest part of a damnable project to make schools clock-free? Or to show kufrs how lowly kufrs are? If muhamid is indeed an inventor, then he is imitating kufr lifestyle, wouldn’t that make him an apostate or hypocrite? Finally, does muhamid love death more than Coca Cola? P. S. don, if muhamid was doing all the above he is a martyr in training.

Hey Mohammed, I know you muslims are behind the times but no-one told you clocks already been invented, long time ago.

A kid with in elementary school was suspended for two days because he chewed into a pastry and made it look like a mock gun.

Well obviously the kid who chewed the pastry into a gun deserved his suspension, I wonder if he was white. Whereas this Muslim genius who after several centuries, probably wearing a watch, invented a clock in a suitcase that ticked, well, he is headed to the White House. Does anyone see madness here? Insanity? Triumphalsim?

All poor Ahmed needs now co complete his project is some C4 so that he could best strike a serious blow against Islamophobia.
Next he might even figure out how to fit his clock inside a pressure cooker.
What won’t a young gifted Muslim not do in the pursuit of the Islamic notion of Peace.
