Hadith Qudsi 19:5: “The Prophet said that Allah commanded him to destroy all the musical instruments, idols, crosses and all the trappings of ignorance.” (The Hadith Qudsi, or holy Hadith, are those in which Muhammad transmits the words of Allah, although those words are not in the Qur’an.)
Muhammad also said:
(1) “Allah Mighty and Majestic sent me as a guidance and mercy to believers and commanded me to do away with musical instruments, flutes, strings, crucifixes, and the affair of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.”
(2) “On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will pour molten lead into the ears of whoever sits listening to a songstress.”
(3) “Song makes hypocrisy grow in the heart as water does herbage.”
(4) “This community will experience the swallowing up of some people by the earth, metamorphosis of some into animals, and being rained upon with stones.” Someone asked, “When will this be, O Messenger of Allah?” and he said, “When songstresses and musical instruments appear and wine is held to be lawful.”
(5) “There will be peoples of my Community who will hold fornication, silk, wine, and musical instruments to be lawful ….” — ‘Umdat al-Salik r40.0
“WATCH: Islamist ‘Music Lesson’ in France Brainwashes Children,” by Sam Prince, Heavy, October 8, 2015:
A video allegedly leaked from a Muslim center in France shows an extremist imam preaching that all music is of the devil and those that listen to music are “kafir”, or infidels who will be “swallowed up by the earth” and “transformed into apes and pigs.” He then tells the impressionable children that all music, no matter what the language, is “haram”, meaning blasphemous to Islam. A transcript of his sermon reads:
When Allah speaks of music in the Koran he reminds us that music is the devil’s language. When did he remind us of this? So those who love music and listen to music, who are they listening to? The devil. They listen to the devil. There are people who disobeyed Allah and will listen to the devil. What did the prophet say about these people? He said, “They will be swallowed up by the earth.” And they will be transformed into apes and into pigs. So he risks being swallowed up by the earth. Second point: Allah will transform them into apes and pigs. Those who love music would love to be transformed into apes and pigs, you agree. No matter what the language of the music: Arabic, French, Turkish… never mind. If there is song and there are musical instruments, when you hear a violin, a drum, a synthesizer, or violin. If you hear instruments it is haram. And the one who likes haram will be with the devil. And he who likes music, is he loved by the devil or Allah? The devil! So choose your side. Empty your mp3 and transform it and replace it with the best words that exist: the Koran. If one says that musical instruments are haram and music is haram and that who listens or loves music risks being transformed by Allah into a pig, or will look like who? The devil….

Back in the ’80’s, a man who stated to me that he was a warlock, told me that he and those thinking like him, read the Bible backwards.
This is satanic…saying that music is from the devil. No, the devil could never design, originate, create, invent, anything like music. Music soothes the soul. Music can actually help us feel closer to God.
King David played the harp and wrote many Psalms.
Nothing so beautiful and pleasing as music could be from satan the devil. “Every good and perfect gift” comes from our Heavenly Father. (James 1:17).
This is just another foul frog of evil coming from the beast of islam and its spokesmen in an effort to distort the truth of life and happiness, joy and peace.
Thinking of some of the beautiful music, and talented persons who write, play, sing…makes me want to listen. Maybe a little *Night Music.*

Budvarakbar says
WRONG!!
خَليفة says
Even backwards, the Bible would make more sense than the Qur’an.
The Qur’an is a mediocre work, lacks detail, full of anachronisms, scientific false hoods, inaccurate history, plagerised from other religions, uses foreign words ( not pure Arabic ) – to name a few flaws.
The Qur’an is what you would get by letting pigs use Arabic typewriters. No wait, that is an insult to pigs.
gravenimage says
Everything you say about the Qur’an is true, خَليفة.
But you can say the same of many books throughout history–most of which have been deservedly long forgotten. The real problem with the Qur’an, of course, is its violence and utter lack of goodness and humanity.

Westman says
Did anyone notice these kids were constantly moving like they had mass ADHD?
Anyone who dislikes all music is someone who cannot be trusted with the feelings of others. Such a one will bring sorrow to his family and demand the very birds to silence.
Apparently Muhammad had a tin ear, unable to appreciate even the simple music of his day. Today there are great orchestras and a rich heritage of popular and ethnic music worldwide while fundamentalist Islam limps along on its paucity of guttural nasheeds. Music is but one milepost in summing the failure of Islam to bring improvement to life.
Again, the sadistic Allah comes with his molten lead for the ears that understand the language and motive ability of music. Allah’s messmaker did not like competition with his repetitive nonsense injected into the minds of children. With music they might not be responsive to commit barbarism on the messmaker’s command. I wonder how Allah feels about becoming the ventriloquist’s dummy? Could that be why he never speaks or makes an appearance?
خَليفة says
Agreed, well stated.

Westman wrote:

…………………………
Yes, Westman–the only other circumstance I have seen this with is with severely autistic children. Islam artificially induces mental illness.
And the problem with Muhammed was more than just having a tin ear, of course–few people unable to enjoy music themselves want to prevent others from listening. They can just take it or leave it in most cases.
But with Islam it is *always* the case that it goes beyond antipathy to suppression, and to the violent punishment of anyone who resists.

Linde Barrera says
To Angemone- Hi, how have you been? “Jim Dandy” I hope! Many here at JW probably never heard of Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University. In his thesis, Dr. Gardner answers the question, “Why are certain people excellent at sports and dancing, while others are excellent at creating and designing homes, clothing, or cars, while others excel at empathy toward others, or solving math problems, or writing/interpreting/playing music, etc? So he came up with his “Theory of Multiple Intelligences”. This theory accounts for each human having at least 1 strong intelligence, 1 weak intelligence, and the rest of varying degrees of strength or weakness. The researched intelligences are 1. logical-mathematical, 2. verbal-linguistic, 3. visual/spatial, 4. physical, 5. musical, 6. ways with animals and nature (much like indigenous peoples anywhere would have), 7. intra-personal, 8. inter-personal. When this or any imam states “Music is from the devil” I just have to laugh because the musical intelligence, like any intelligence, comes from God or some higher power that created it in our genes. This imam is just parroting what Muhammad said over 1400 years ago, and I am certain Muhammad didn’t have any of the intelligences of which Dr. Gardner researched and wrote.
TheBuffster says
Linde, I think Dr. Gardner missed the kind of intelligence Mohammad had – manipulative/demagogic – although that might fit the category “interpersonal”, the perverted version.
Angemon says
Hi Linde. Don’t know about Jim, but all dandy on this side of the pond 🙂
You’re correct, I’d never heard of Dr. Howard Gardner (or at least, I don’t remember hearing about him), but I was acquainted with the theory of multiple intelligences, although not by that exact name – I remember reading and hearing about the problems of IQ tests and the problem of defining exactly what “intelligence” is, and one of the issues was exactly that: different people excel at some areas and have trouble in other areas.
As for what muhammad might have said to anyone proposing him that musical intelligence came from God, I suspect he’d have them killed – jolly old Mo wasn’t exactly very knowledgeable on the iiner workings of the human body or nature in general. The gender of the baby depends on whether the father or the mother “discharges” first, it’s ok to drink from a well where trash, excrements and dead animals are thrown as long as the water is clear because nothing can take the purity out of water, the sun sets in a murky pool, etc.

Well said there Wellington.
I think I’ll fire some J.S. Bach – in this case, some of the music he wrote for the Catholic Church – into the CD player and, as I listen and thoroughly enjoy Bach’s musical genius, reflect on the relative merits of a religion and Church that can commission works by Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Correlli and so many other formidable talents in relation to a religion that considers their work evil and me “kafir” for listening to it.
That reflection and contemplation only took a few microseconds. Any religion that considers Bach the work of the Devil is unworthy of my consideration. If Islam considers me “kafir” for being a music lover, too bad. I not changing to accommodate that viewpoint.

It is remarkable how in this quotation from Muhammad “teachings” he is so close to what one can find in the Plato’s “Republic.” So not only he or rather his scribes plagiarized Bible, but even this Greek philosopher whom Mohammedans should rather despise as a polytheist and worthy destruction. Music is a universal human activity, like dancing or speech. To forbid music is to deny humanity. Salafism is inhuman in so many ways, truly a death-in-life.
dumbledoresarmy says
Yes. To forbid music is to deny humanity.
But it isn’t just Salafism. One must remember that Salafism is just an attempt to revive, to restore, to practise *pure* Islam, to go ‘by the book’.
The madness is in Islam itself; in the example of Mohammed.
The ban on music (or on most music; flutes and stringed instruments are singled out for special opprobrium) is like the ban on the keeping of pet dogs.
It attacks things that humans have done for tens of thousands of years; things that seem to be a very deep and ancient part of our being-human. Our Stone Age forebears kept pet dogs and played music – people have found a bone flute 35 000 years old, in a cave in Central Europe.
It’s not just that Islam is ‘anti-West’ or that it is ‘anti-civilisation’.
It is anti-human, period.

Wellington says
In spite of Islamic doctrine, Mazo, not because of it. Even you are not deceptive enough to refute this but you were cheesy and slimy enough to mention Miley Cyrus without mentioning Beethoven, the likes of whom, respecting the latter, no Islamic music ever composed, in spite of silly and control-freak Mo’s ban, can even remotely compare with.
Besides, you ingenuously stumbled into another truth about Islam and that is that this wretched religion proves that forced virtue is sham virtue. Only when human beings have the right, without threat of harm, to prove how dismal they are (e.g., Mile Cyrus) can real virtue exist. One cannot be truly virtuous without the freedom not to be so. Islam in its theological blueprint disallows such——to its discredit forever. I know you won’t get this, deluded Mo admirer that you are, but I thought I’d put it out there anyway since sometimes stating just how awful Islam is serves a higher purpose.
Again, you prove what EVERY Muslim apologist proves, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, here at JW and that is that EVERY time a defense is made of Islam, it falls flat. I’d say somewhere in the neighborhood of B Flat, though no disrespect is meant to any B Flat composition, only to Islam——–and to you.

Mazo wrote, “Cheesy western pop music, hip hop, rap, and Miley Cyrus garbage is totally inferior to Arabic Classical music.”
You do try to confuse and obfuscate people here at JW who enjoy reading articles and responding with posts. By “classic” or “classical” you must mean “serving as the established model or standard” for that particular Arabic art form.
I listened to some of those pieces that you called “classical Arabic” music, or “classic Arabic” music. The Oud is a very ancient instrument, the origins of which are shrouded in mystery, legend, and folk-lore, It has been around in some form or other for at least 5,000 years. One of the pieces to which I listened had a distinctly Spanish flavour in the fingering and repetitive rhythms… borrowed from Andalusa?
You derided “Cheesy western pop music, hip hop, rap, and Miley Cyrus garbage” and called it totally inferior to classical Arabic music. That’s a very subjective comparison, based on regional tastes, not on the developmental history of music which is crucially lacking in the Muslim world.
Has any Arabic nation produced a composer of the likes of Beethoven, or Bach, or Chopin, or Rachmaninov, or Mahler? No, it hasn’t because as Churchill said the “The River War” in 1899, “but the influence of the religion [Islam] paralyses the social development of those who follow it.” I have yet to see or hear a world-class Arabic symphony orchestra.
Here is some real classic western music that will knock spots off any Oud player.

Mazo only has a point if someone were to claim (as some commenters here certainly imply) that Muslims have no music and do not enjoy or cultivate or produce any music at all. This claim could be quite copiously and easily refuted, leaving egg on the faces of the Counter-Jihad. But Mazo won’t stop there, and tries to construct a more complex bundle of propositions with faulty wiring and screws out of joint. He also omits important points. To sort it all out we can begin by noting that his characterization of Western music as “cheesy”, and his drastically abbreviated list — “western pop music, hip hop, rap, and Miley Cyrus garbage is totally inferior to Arabic Classical music. Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea and Taylor Swift …” — leaves out whole worlds of music. Sure, in and among the broad and diverse subcategory of Western Pop Music one can find some mediocre talent. But one can also find a multitude of examples of musical brilliance if not genius. And this isn’t counting the diverse world of Jazz and Classical, as others have pointed out. Mazo’s deceptively narrow slice of Pop leaves out such greats as Paul Simon, James Taylor, The Beatles (as a band and singly), Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Phoebe Snow, Chicago, Santana, Jimmi Hendrix, ELO, a whole slew of artists out of Motown, and literally hundreds more throughout the decades which, while subjective to a degree, exemplify a range of talent unmatched by any non-Western culture, let alone Islam. And again, that’s not even counting Jazz and Classical — two other amazingly diverse whole worlds of music. The best of music played by Muslims doesn’t rise above either quaintly Oriental anthropological music, or pop music that varies from being decidedly cheesy, to being arguably solid. In the latter small corner we have arrived at now, trying to find anything remotely comparable to the great and diverse edifice of Western Music over the ages into the present, we could cite someone like the Algerian pop musician Khaled, who had a 1993 worldwide hit song, “Didi”. I rather like that song, and have listened to it numerous times and have played along with it on my guitar. Therefore what? There is no problem of Islam threatening the world?
Further, the very fact that music is even a “problem” at all in the Muslim world is an outrage to human rights and to the human spirit. Mazo tries to sweep that under the Persian rug too. Citing exceptions and diversity amid this “problem” does nothing to ameliorate it (though if we were vulnerable to the wiles of certain Muslim “reformers” like Zuhdi Jasser we might think it represents a “struggle for the soul of Islam” among multitudes of supposedly well-meaning Muslims who can be our partners in a new “dialogue” to “reform” the Islam that is ravaging the world).
Finally (for now), we can point out that just as bad (if not perhaps worse) than the fact that music is a “problem” in Islam, is the fact that some Muslims do enjoy and play music — for these latter can function in the stealth jihad that tries to deceive the West into thinking Islam is assimilable into the fabric of Western societies. Cat Stevens (aka Yusuf Islam) would be the gold standard of this — with his re-entry into music after a long Qudsinian absence fooling even the likes of Dolly Parton (shame on her). The popular Muslim musician Khaled, for example (he’s still going strong, by the way): Read carefully what Wikipedia informs us:
In 2012 Khaled’s album C’est la vie sold more than one million copies in the European market alone after only two months and sold 2.2 million copies in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as 200,000 in the United States, for an estimated 4.6 million worldwide sales. With a record million downloads of the hit single “C’est la vie” on European and Canadian iTunes, the album reached number 5 on the Billboard top France Songs. The album contains a message of tolerance, love and peace, staying away from the themes of conflict that many other artists in the Arab world explore. Khaled tried to convey what Algerian immigrants suffer in Europe through the album and believes this is the reason behind the album’s huge commercial success. C’est la vie was Khaled’s first album after a five-year break from recording during 2011 presidential elections in France and the Arab Spring.

This is a matter of opinion–and one not likely shared by actual musicians.
But it is also obfuscation, and completely beside the point.
This is not an article about whether the Star Spangled Banner or the Ba’athist anthem is a superior piece of music.
It is an article about how so many pious Muslims take the Islamic injunction against music *quite literally*. Devout Muslims in many parts of the world are violently targeting musical instruments, music venues, and musicians themselves.
This is not being done by decent Infidels, but just by Mazo’s own oppressive coreligionists.

But this is bs. When pious Muslims talk about smashing musical instruments, they are not just talking about those used to create cheesy pop music.
And pious Muslims have opposed music for centuries before pop music–of any caliber–ever existed.
Moreover, while aficionados of fine music in the West may not be fans of bubble-gum, few of us believe we have the right–or would even have the desire–to destroy music that we may not respect but that is innocently enjoyed by others.
Would that that were true in Islam.
Pious Muslims have flogged and murdered musicians, all in the name of Islam.
And why not? The “Prophet” himself makes no distinction between fine music and low-class pop music.
Decent Infidels would much rather deal with the existence of a few popular no-talent hacks than with the joyless crushing of creativity under Islam.
Here’s yet another Islamic source damning music:
http://www.al-islam.org/greater-sins-volume-1-ayatullah-sayyid-abdul-husayn-dastghaib-shirazi/fifteenth-greater-sin-music
Notice that Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber are not mentioned even once…

Cravenmirage posted a link to an unimportant Shia Ayatollah whom few Shia take as their Marja.
The vast majority of Shia listen to instrumental music. Shia parties like Amal and Hezbollah produce their own instrumental music. Their songs all all over youtube.
The “joyless crushing of creativity” has Muslim Arabs like Muhammad Abdu perform their instrumental music on Saudi television and other Arab countries where the media regularly broadcasts instrumental music by Arab Shia and Sunni Muslim artists.
The Salafis cannot even ban music in Saudi Arabia where Muslims listen to it and play it themselves.
Muhammad Abdu is not impious and neither are the multitudes of Arab Muslims who listen to and produce instrumental music.

As always, Mazo simply sidesteps the reality of pious Muslims like this French Imam–and the threat they present to all people who love music and believe in freedom of expression.
They certainly present a threat to lax Muslims–but Mazo doesn’t care about this:

“Mali: Islamic supremacists silence musicians”

Will Mazo confront his violent coreligionists who are targeting musicians?
Of course not–his whole purpose here is to try to whitewash Islam and imply that it presents no threat to innocent people.

The music video of that Abdu character which Mazo put up —
https ://www.youtube. com/watch?v=7thE7_Rvpdo
— reminds me of the kind of music one would see in the background of a 1960s movie of Oriental intrigue with Peter Ustinov in an Arab headwrap, munching black olives around an unctuously Middle Eastern accent telling British agent Michael Caine sitting haplessly on a pouf that his men will plunge a dagger into Audrey Hepburn’s breast if he doesn’t tell him where the precious jade shipment is located.
Mazo says
All of those attacks on music were performed by terrorist groups.
Music is not banned in any Muslim country. Most people who listen to music are not lax and they pray.
Angemon says
Mazo posted:
“All of those attacks on music were performed by terrorist groups.”
Really? “Terrorist groups”? Like, the IRA, or the ETA, or the Sendero Luminoso, or any other of the minority of terror groups worldwide who aren’t muslims trying to impose sharia law? No, those attacks were carried out by devout, pious muslims.
Mazo says
All of them are Salafists, who also oppose Sufi shrines and elevated graves. They smash the headstones in Muslim cemetaries and demolish Sufi tombs and shrines. No Sufi terrorist groups attacking musicians, shrines, or graves. No Shia are going around attacking musicians and shrines.
Shia groups like Hezbollah and Amal produce their own music. Sufis use music and produce musicians.

“All of them are Salafists”
All of them devout, pious muslims. Salafis practice islam as closely as possible as it was practiced by muhammad and his companions – when you try to excuse something by saying something along the lines of “oh, that’s just something salafis do” what you are saying is “oh, that’s just something people who practice islam as closely as muhammad and his companions do”. Meaning you’re making non-salafis look like apostates or heretics.
Mazo says
Sufis like the Naqshbandi orders believe that the chain of transmission for their leaders leads directly back to the Prophet from the Sahaba. They believe they practice what was taught by the Prophet and cite Hadith to justify jumping around during Dhikr which Salafis claim is Bida’a.
Only clowns with low IQ like Jihadwatchers will think Sufis deliberately try to practice a “deviant” form of Islam knowingly.
Angemon says
Since no one is here doing that claim, I’m going to call it “Happy Hour at Shenanigans”. Plus, what I said still stands – Salafis practice islam as closely as possible as it was practiced by muhammad and his companions. When you try to excuse something by saying something along the lines of “oh, that’s just something salafis do” what you are saying is “oh, that’s just something people who practice islam as closely as muhammad and his companions do”. Meaning you’re making non-salafis look like apostates or heretics.
Mazo says
The people here with stunted, inferior, mental capacities, don’t realize that Sufis also believe they practice the Islam that was practiced by the Prophet Muhammad and the Sahaba.
Sufis believe the leaders of their orders have a direct chain of transmission to the Prophet from the Sabaha and that
Sufi teachings were transmitted down this chain.
Sufis justify using music in their rituals and jumping around during Dhikr by citing Hadith where the Prophet allowed it.
Shias have their own beliefs and they adhere to what was taught to them by their Imams.
Angemon says
Mazo, you and your coreligionists can’t agree on how islam was practiced in muhammad’s time, you kill one another over it, and we’re the ones with “stunted, inferior, mental capacities” for pointing out that salafis claim to practice islam as closely as it was practiced by muhammad and his companions? LOL!!!
Still and again, you’re not actually countering what I said – when you try to excuse something by saying something along the lines of “oh, that’s just something salafis do” what you are saying is “oh, that’s just something people who practice islam as closely as muhammad and his companions do”. Meaning you’re making non-salafis look like apostates or heretics.

FALSE. Grin, grin. What. An. Idiot.
It is well known and academically substantiated that Sufis in India picked up a lot of their mysticism from the Hindus.
These aberrant Sufi practices were progressively removed from Sufi culture.
In a certain sense, Sufism is undefinable. It is claimed that “Sufis all follow” Sharia, and that official version is mostly true in terms of how things turned out. But NOT really true in terms of the HISTORY.
I know a LOT more about Sufism than Mazo and Sufis generally, both the history and the transmission to North America. Sufis were real jerks, e.g. totally sexist.
For many centuries, Sufis were very reclusive and hidden. There really can be no overall history of Sufism that can ever be written. There are separate streams.
BUT we do know that the Sufis got a lot from the Hindus.
Mazo is clueless and pathetic. Once again he loses badly. And that is a global permanent failure for the world to see.
So many times I have seen that the “arguments” put forward by Muslim apologist are tissue thin and basically nonsense.
Mazo tries to condemn JW writers as ignorant and lacking average thinking skills.
But in terms of theology, history, debate skills and human consciousness, Mazo does not come up to the level of my knees.
So I am glad to give answer here, and also to wipe the floor with Muslim apologists across some sectors of social media.
Most of what I see from the Muslims online is pathetic. They don’t know how to make arguments and they don’t know how to counter arguments.
And they think they win arguments.
Many of these fools cannot find an argument wit ha map and a flashlight. They are so out of it. They don’t actually have critical reasoning skills.
All you have to do is throw in some good evidence-based reasoning and these jokers have to ignore, deflect, or fold. It’s like they really have no game.
The so-called “arguments” for Islam are in fact basically emotional.
And that’s where we have them.
Glad you showed up here Mazo, you foul and arrogant git. Always pleasure humiliating you with the truth, and any other pathetic Muslim apologists I can find.
And anyway, Sufism is all garbage. Especially Western Sufism. The western Sufis went full retard. There may be a couple dozen left in North America. But they are dying out. That whole scene crashed in the Eighties. And never came back.
What surprised me was to learn – only this year – that ALL of the Koran and all of Islam are complete nonsense! None of the Islamic tradition holds together. Once again:

This Islamic “theology” is all garbage.

I have skin in this game. Was in church choir for seven years as a kid. Spent a lot of weekends with the Sufis in the early eighties. Also did the requisite cultural research and can give real perspective. Including wrt Protestant and Islamic traditions.
Technically I have a real pro background in sacred chants and chantways and mantra and so forth. The term “chantway” is the formal anthropological term.
This thread carries real cultural significance. Am glad others developed the topic, including the ( remarkably pathetic and disingenuous ) carpet pilot / Sufi / oud side.
Here I will give the very very short answer.
1) Mohammed the Desert Pirate was very emphatically against bells. Muslims are ALWAYS against church bells and always work to silence them.
2) The sistrum ( a kind of bell set ) is a very ancient pagan sacred musical instrument that ( we are told ) was used by the very early Christians.
3) Muslim preachers and Muslim culture are emphatically against most kinds of music, such as western music, church music, and so forth.
4) The early European Protestants significantly opposed musical instruments IN CHURCH ONLY. Per John Calvin.
5) Later the Protestants used wind instruments and organs IN CHURCH, e.g. in the Netherlands and in Switzerland.
Overall, “Muslim cultural practice” is strongly anti-music, anti-dance, and anti-culture. Muslim cultural practice consciously seeks to BROADLY suppress all non-Muslim cultural practices, ESPECIALLY music and cultural forms related to music.
Christian cultural practice is not like that at all, and has not been for decades or centuries.
Yes, there were Christians who opposed Rock and Roll ( very much my religion ), but they Did Not And Could Not SUPPRESS Rock and Roll. Also, Elvis Presley the major rocker spent many long midnight hours singing gospel choir. No one EVER threw him out of church. So there was never a major cultural divide to be found.
The really surprising thing – and I see it all over the USA – is that Christian churches actively bring in Tibetan Buddhist monk choirs to perform pagan CHANTS in their churches. They’ve been doing that for decades, even at very major churches, even in very conservative Mississippi Basin churches and farm country.
In the late eighties I attended a Tibetan performance hosted by Benedictine Catholic monks. It appears that these Catholic monks in Chicago feel some deep affinity with Tibetan Buddhist monks. Decades back some Catholic priests were really “getting into Zen Buddhism.” Don’t know why.
Now here is the main point. The Islamists ( tho Abrahamic ) are DEEPLY opposed to the other Abrahamic traditions, to Jewish and Christian cultural practice. And yet, some Christian groups and ( very pagan ) pro Buddhists have a friction free social relationship in Christian country. It is really only the Islamists who cause problems.
Islam is FEROCIOUSLY anti-music, against Christian and pagan sacred music in particular, and sometimes Muslim preachers do preach against music therapy.
kay says
Here are some references from the Protestant tradition.
I have no knowledge of how the Eastern Orthodox traditions work in cultural terms.
Note the profound difference between Church doctrine for religious music and Church doctrine regarding secular music. The Church does NOT interfere with secular music.
Islam interferes with Church music, secular music, slaughters all the pagans and destroys culture and the liberal arts and civilization generally so much as jihad can fight the infidels.

Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.
–Martin Luther
http://socrates58.blogspot.com/2010/03/john-calvin-musical-instruments-in.html
John Calvin: We are not, indeed, forbidden to use, in private, musical instruments, but they are banished out of the churches by the plain command of the Holy Spirit, when Paul, in 1 Cor. 14:13, lays it down as an invariable rule, that we must praise God, and pray to him only in a known tongue. [Commentary on Psalms, Vol. 3 (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 1979), 98 . . .]
Calvin’s absurd restrictions against musical instruments didn’t last long in many Reformed circles. Christopher Richard Joby observed:
By the middle of the seventeenth century, those who supported its use seem to have made their case sufficiently strongly for organs to begin to be used in worship . . . it is also worth nothing that the Netherlands were not the only place where instruments were being introduced into worship in the seventeenth century.
For example, in western Switzerland wind instruments also began to be used in Reformed worship at this time.
(Calvinism and the Arts: A Re-Assessment, Dudley, Massachusetts: Peeters, 2007, p. 74)
In fairness to Calvin, it must be noted (as it was, briefly, in the above citations) that he was not at all opposed to music per se.
He devoted a great deal of energy and devotion in promoting the Genevan Psalter, and indeed was known to have been moved to tears upon hearing the choir singing at his church.
But for some reason, he held to a huge dichotomy between the human voice and musical instruments, as if the voice is not also an “instrument” — and is fundamentally different in some way, so that the one almost inexorably becomes an “idol” whereas the human voice (as long as it is not singing in harmony) does not.

1) Re Gravenimage: “…the only other circumstance I have seen this with is with severely autistic children. Islam artificially induces mental illness.
And the problem with Muhammed was more than just having a tin ear, of course–few people unable to enjoy music themselves want to prevent others from listening…it goes beyond antipathy to suppression, and to the violent punishment of anyone who resists.”
2) And this is also my answer to the arrogant and clueless Mazo.
—————–
Truth is, the so-called “mystical” and “musical” traditions of Islam are pathetic. They are primitive, unevolved and repetitive. Islam is the main force of cultural suppression and destruction anywhere and everywhere, and we have something better. It’s called rock and roll.
Simply put, there can be culture oriented towards death, like Islam, and culture oriented towards life. What Islamists call “decadence” and “immorality” is really an important stage in human social development: boys and girls learning to relate to each other physically and emotionally.
Why? Boys and girls need to share a kind of middle ground experience and practice being close to each other and develop rapport.
Culture is NEVER about abducting and enslaving and raping girls; it’s about taking them dancing and being a good partner.
I say rock and roll is the answer to Islam. The Muslim kids should all defect and come over to the Bright Side of the Road. Lose the massive cultural impoverishment, kids! You have only to give up chains and misery.
