On this special edition of The Glazov Gang, I was joined by Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center who writes the blog The Point at Frontpagemag.com.
Daniel discussed Russia’s ‘Holy War’ on the Islamic State?, shedding light on whether Putin’s military action in Syria is really about fighting ISIS.
Don’t miss it!

MUST WATCH —- HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10 MINUTES
GENIUS + CLEAR ANALYSIS: Daniel Greenfield [Robert calls him “the incomparable”] does his very best to explain all of the factors in the most complex regional situation since World War II.
NOTE; At 7:18 Daniel talks about how Putin’s militarism in Syria ensures a continuing flow of “refugees” into Europe, and that eventually weakening the EU. YOU CAN JUST WATCH THAT IF YOU ARE SHORT OF TIME.
And remember — his web article is readable at the link given above [The Point].

The flow of refugees could be easly stopped by shooting anybody tresspassing as the US border patrol is allowed to.

From the perspective of Christian minorities in Syria who are now protected under Assad regime, you hope and PRAY for the complete defeat of the various barbaric islamic jihadists and their American backers. To Christian and other religious minorities in Syria and elsewhere in the middle east, the genocidal bad guys are the American-backed barbaric jihadists that are fighting Assad and the GOOD guys are Russians who are preventing the collapse of the (protector of Christians) the Syrian regime. Anyone who cares about the safety and the protection of Syrian Christians in Syria MUST pray for the complete defeat of the barbaric and genocidal islamic jihadists and their American backers. For the Syrian Christians, this is NOT an abstract political game to be played on “You Tube Videos” but this is a Matter of Life and Death.

As bad an actor as Assad is (ISIS and their allies are complete savages) currently I have some sympathy for your point of view.

In all fairness, the “refugees” were already flowing into Europe before Russia’s intervention.
Godwin says
Daniel is shooting without thinking. Yes, it is true that the refugees’ problem had started long before Putin’s intervention. America under Obama is the evil guy here in supporting all the barbaric jihadi groups which persecute the Christians n Putin is the hero in the Christians’ view.

Islam is a murderous death cult that needs to be eliminated from off the face of the earth. This will probably not happen until Revelations 2:26 and Ezekiel 40-48 are fulfilled. At that time the Lord will establish a Davidic kingdom to govern the earth. When that will happen is in God’s hand.

Daniel Greenfield gave a very insightful interview, bringing in the dimensions that must be used to analyze the Syrian and Iranian aspects of the Middle East.
Jamie takes the point of view of “what is the best way we can help the Christians?” I agree with his point of view, knowing that when Christians are not persecuted, other groups and sects are most likely to be allowed to exist.
The most important aspect of protecting Christians is to have stable governments with relatively secure borders. The governments in Muslim countries have to be authoritarian dictatorships, generally, given the nature of Muslims. Christians were secure in proto-dhimmi status in Egypt, Syria, Libya, Iraq and the United Arab Emirate before the Arab Spring. By “proto-dhimmi” I mean that the Christians were not actively subject to dhimmi sharia laws, but the threat was always present.
However, a coherent Christian community with its own leaders and interests was always an important part of any Muslim dictator’s support, and definitely a way to “divide and conquer” to stay in power.
Greenfield notes that Putin is not interested in defeating ISIS but in supporting the Assad government and consequently protecting Iranian interests. Thus, the Russian planes attack the Sunni rebel groups who are not part of ISIS but who are attacking the Assad government.
The most important part of protecting Christian interests in Syria is to stabilize the Assad government. Christians will not be able to maintain enclaves for long. Thus, I fail to see any reason for disappointment in seeing Russia go after the Sunni rebel groups, rather than ISIS directly. I assume Russian military analysts see the Sunni rebel groups as the bigger direct threat to the Assad government. It is in the interest of the Assad government to have the one defined enemy, ISIS, rather than a bunch of rebel groups nipping at its heels. ISIS might even turn out to have a permanent presence in the area, which is still not catastrophic for the Christians as long as ISIS is kept from expanding and the other tribal areas stabilize.
Kurdish Iraq has been a stable territory since Desert Storm, is relatively homogeneously Kurdish, and protects Christians. The United States acted correctly in protecting Kurdistan from attack by Saddam Hussein’s forces. It was one of the few sensible policies followed by the US government in the Middle East. But then again, that policy was begun by George H W Bush, a President far superior to his son, George W Bush.
I doubt that Iran wants to take over Syria, or that Russia wants Iran to take over Syria. Iran wants a friendly complicit Syrian government, which is not nearly the same thing as a government of occupation. Recall that the Jews in Hungary in World War II were not harmed by the anti-Semitic Hungarians until the Germans actually seized direct control.
Greenfield assumes that President Obama acts to support the interests, in all cases, of the Muslim Brotherhood. I think it would be difficult to argue against that assumption. I have no idea of Obama’s internal consciousness, but his actions show a consistency which makes them predictable.
Christianblood says
For the Christians and other religious minorities in Syria today who are really worried about their very survival in the region ISIS, Al-Nusra Front, The Army of Conquest, Muslim Brotherhood, All the other jihadist groups backed by America, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Gulf States, International Terrorists and the West are the Real Bad guys which are to be defeated. President Assad’s Regime, Iran, Russia and Hizbullah are the real Good guys who have to win this war.
Ernie says
Wow Christianblood , your worldview is rather a simple one . Those “Good” guys you’re mentioning are not so good . Especially Iran and Hizbullah are famous for spreading and professing terrorism worldwide ( so much for “The Religion of Peace”.). They are mortal enemies of Israel and everything Christian in this world . Evil is fighting Evil in the ME .

Great interview. Interesting information when interests by the varied groups are played up as the best solution and one can wonder what is the real story behind all of the claims made in the *news.*
Thanks, Mr. Glazov and Mr. Greenfield.

I have learned more from listening to Daniel Greenfield’s (I have no agenda but the truth) answers to Jamie Glazov’s excellent questions and the comments of the JW posters before me, than from listening to CNN. This was packed with inquiry and facts. Thank you all for helping me to continue learning. ❤

We definitely have World War 3 starting up. Like the Syrian Sunnis explicitly claim.
It’s not gonna be pretty. But it is, like, totally exciting. Not in a good way. But still, very exciting.
U.S. delivers 50 tons of ammunition to Syria rebel groups

http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/12/politics/syria-rebel-groups-ammunition-50-tons/index.html
“U.S. military cargo planes gave 50 tons of ammunition to rebel groups overnight in northern Syria, using an air drop of 112 pallets as the first step in the Obama Administration’s urgent effort to find new ways to support those groups.”
Well, that’s American oil on the Shia Sunni fire. This American ammo will be used on Russian forces and Moscow is now going to be Intensely Pissed.
What’s puzzling me is the nature of the US game. Get on down. Oh yeah.
I mean, the US sought to lift sanctions on Iran. And now the US is massively supplying their main enemy, the Sunni who are fighting the Iranians and the Alawites in Syria. This is just so confused.
The US and Russia are at odds here.
The US is with Turkey and Saudi Arabia and the Sunnis.
Russia is with Damascus, the Alawites, and with the Shia in Iran.

Putin wants to stop the Europeans getting a pipeline from Saudi Arabia into Europe. If that happens, Russian oil and gas will be irrelevant and of only half the value.
BenDavid says
All Putin wants is, and this is his primarily goal, to become the most important partner to US in solving worlds global problems. I do think this is what he sincerely wishes. However, he’s got an plan B: if United States doesn’t accept him as an equal partner, he will do everything it takes to break the US, even if it means to make coalitions with the rest of the world who hates America (and there is a LOT of them..) to do just that. Remember, Russia and the US are the only two military superpowers who can destroy each other and the entire world with nukes in a matter of hours if they wanted so. So think twice before satanzing Putin… Dictator or not, this guy has 85-90 % of Russians behind him for years, and he is pretty much everywhere in the world well respected except in some Western countries.
So.. In my opinion, only US and Russia (together with Israel) in a “joint venture” can eradicate the Islamic ideology, in a future ideological/cultural ww3, civilizing the islamic Arab World and the rest of the Muslims worldwide, meaning deislamizing them, meaning secularizing them.

I completely disagree with Daniel Greenfield. Russia, in collaboration with Assad, is already preparing refugee shelters in Syria to give civilians shelter while trying to stop the exodus of people while they fight ISIS. I don’t understand why Americans have such strong anti-Russian narrative all the time. When you live outside of the US you view the world differently and have different experiences of various cultures. I must admit I tend to always find the American narrative distorted and with limited insight.
Wellington says
Don’t just wonder why, Tim, Americans “have such anti-Russian narrative…..” Try asking the Poles, the Estonians, the Latvians, the Lithuanians, the Czechs, the Slovaks, the…., the…., the…. about this.
As George Kennan observed well over a half century ago, “The Russians look upon their neighbors as vassals or enemies.” The Russians are very brave and they have a fine intellectual and artistic tradition, but they are abysmal where liberty is concerned and herein lies the main reason why America and so many Americans (including myself) remain deeply skeptical of Russian intentions to this very day.
As for distorted narrative and limited insight, do you really want to argue that, historically speaking, the Russians are not more guilty of this than the American? I mean really?

Prosthetic Prediction: Russia will lead a muslim army against Israel
RCCA says
I disagree slightly with Daniel. Russia might be taking a bigger role to prevent an Iranian takeover of Syria. Whatever else Putin is, he is a Christian and does not want to see the slaughter of Christians if Assad is overthrown. I don’t fault him for not taking on Christian persecution in Iran, no leader bothers with the persecution of minorities in Muslim countries.
Russian’s involvement in Syria in preventing a complete collapse of Assad’s regime is preferable to Obama’s approach which is solely focused on bringing the collapse of Assad. Putin has spoken about the eventual replacement of Assad according to the wishes of the Syrian people (just taking his word for this for the sake of argument) whereas Obama has said absolutely nothing about what would be done for the Syrian people after a victory by “moderate” Islamic terrorists. As Greenfield points out, there is no significant difference between the competing terrorist groups, but we know whoever comes out on top will impose sharia. Syria will be taken backwards if Obama’s plan succeeds.

TRUTH. And again TRUTH.
Genocide is genocide. Putin is preventing ethnic cleansing in western Syria.
He’s actually protecting and not attacking.
The more jihadis he kills and the sooner, the better for us all.
Putin BARELY saved the Alawites and the Christians.
That means he didn’t want to go in with military force. He felt he had to.
Putin is STABILIZING the situation. Obama is DESTABILIZING the situation.
We need more stability. And less effing genocide.
The only way to handle these problems is to prevent the scenario from getting to the stage of jihadi takeover / enslavement / rape. That means the jihadis have to be hit hard before they can take these villages and cut a lot of civilian throats.
You don’t have to like Assad. It’s just a matter of preventing ethnic cleansing.
They need to figure that out at the White House. How is this hard to understand?
And another important question here: How is this not the beginning of World War 3? I mean we’ve got people from at least ninety three nations actually fighting, right?
Looks like a world war to me. Especially with Russkie fighter planes and attack helicopters and missile batteries based near the front lines.
