Saudi Arabia: Muslim clerics call for jihad to defend the Islamic State

Against a Russian-led Shi’ite/Orthodox Christian crusade, you see. This shows one reason why the Saudis have not moved energetically against the Islamic State themselves: if they did, they could be facing an internal uprising from Saudis who believe the Islamic State to be manifesting authentic Islam.

RIYADH: Dozens of Islamist Saudi clerics have called on Arab and Muslim countries to “give all moral, material, political and military” support to what they term a jihad, or holy war, against Syria’s government and its Iranian and Russian backers.

Although the clerics who signed the online statement are not affiliated with the government, their strong sectarian and anti-Christian language reflects mounting anger among many Saudis over Russian and Iranian involvement in Syria’s war.

Russia last week started airstrikes against Syrian opposition targets that it describes as aimed at weakening ISIS, a move Riyadh has denounced. The clerics’ statement compared it to the Soviet Union’s 1980 invasion of Afghanistan, which prompted an international jihad.

“The holy warriors of Syria are defending the whole Islamic nation. Trust them and support them … because if they are defeated, God forbid, it will be the turn of one Sunni country after another,” the statement said.

Riyadh, along with Turkey and other Gulf states, is a main supporter of rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad, backed by Iran and Russia, but it is also worried about the rise of jihadi groups such as ISIS among the opposition.

Saudi jets have joined airstrikes against ISIS in Syria, while the government has decreed long prison terms for anyone who supports the group, whose sympathizers have killed dozens in attacks in the kingdom this year.

The bloodshed in Syria, part of a wider struggle for regional supremacy between Saudi Arabia and Iran, has aggravated sectarian anger across the Middle East and drawn religiously motivated foreign fighters to both sides.

Riyadh’s state-affiliated clergy have already termed the war a jihad for Syrians, but they have also denounced ISIS and al-Qaeda and said that Saudi citizens must not go abroad to fight or give the rebels money except via government channels.

The 53 signatories, including prominent Islamists with a history of opposing the government, were careful not to contradict that message, for example by calling on Saudis to join the jihad, but they also did not speak out against travel for jihad.

Their letter, which used sectarian terms for both Iran and Assad’s Alawite sect, a Shiite offshoot, also portrayed Russian involvement as part of an Orthodox Christian crusade, and attacked the West for denying the rebels anti-aircraft weapons.

“The Western-Russian coalition with the Safavids (Iran) and the Nusairis (Alawites) are making a real war against the Sunni people and their countries,” the statement said.

    • Do read the piece before making sweeping comments . This is 53 clerics who are know to be anti government. I do not know how many clerics there are in SA but I am sure they are a minority. 9/11 was brought about out by Al Queda led by bin Laden who was an exile from SA. I am no fan of the SA government but keep criticism to the facts. the SA govt. has a lot of problems with IS, Al queda and home grown dissidents.
      The Russians are hardly part of a coalition, though it may look like it from their point of view. The West is far from happy about Russian involvement. When Russia moves in it tends to stay.

        Quite right to demand relevance.
        From this point of view I guess we can see that the balance of power between Sunnis, generally, and Shias, generally, has been upset by the Gulf Wars, just as Trump and others have pointed out.
        More over, Obama has capitulated on the bomb to Iran and pledged financial support.
        In this mess, we in the West do not have a clue who to support either. No wonder these Sunni clerics come in on the side of the Sunni warriors!
        This is fine with me as long as they keep their fight over there and not bring in to Europe or North America.
        It looks like the Saudis have a alligator by the tail that they feed in order to avoid it biting them. They export it all over the world. That is what I’m frightened about.

          The question is, why should we support anyone there at all?

          It used to be the case that the oil fields in the gulf area were strategic. They no longer are. Through offshore drilling and new technologies such as fracking, the US and its North American allies now produce more oil than does Saudi Arabia. In any military conflict, we could easily allocate sufficient petroleum products for military needs.

          The interest of the United States in the Middle East is, broadly, that governments there and the borders of countries remain stable. There were many benefits to stable countries, not least of which is that governments such as Egypt and Libya blocked migration across their borders. Libya, after the US-sponsored coup, is now a major jumping-off point for economic migrants to Europe and points beyond.

          I’m very, very sorry to say that, except for the support of Israel, the US has an almost unblemished record of shooting itself in the foot in Middle East affairs. Under George W Bush and Barack Obama, the US has consistently supported the demolition of stable governments in the area. It is difficult to imagine greater damage to US interests.

          There is absolutely no reason why the US should be giving support to any Syrian rebel, ISIS or not.

        • The ISIS-Saudi quarrel is just a family quarrel because they are both on the same doctrinal page. The only difference is that ISIS is much creative in killing and murdering than Saudi Arabia. The Saudis just stick to traditional beheading and rape but ISIS in all its creativity can burn in cages, throw from tall buildings, drown, and other exquisitely creative ways of murder.

          There is nothing that ISIS does that are not literal injunctions from the so-called “holy trilogy”–Qur’an, Hadith(Bukhari) and Sunnah.

        Oh, please. The only issue the KSA has with clerics, is if they don’t toe the monarchy’s line.

      • The Saudis ( my opinion) are somewhat schizophrenic. Their intelligence services share intelligence with the Israelis ( even under the current king; although possibly less then under Abdullah); yet, when a Portuguese CARGO airline asked for international bids for work, and an Israeli firm offered the lowest price (or best terms)- the Saudi government banned the airline from flying into Saudi Arabia.

      • I don’t see what the problem of Russia moving in is, they have lots of experience from Afghanistan …
        The Free World should be grateful, Russia is not PC about who or what it shoots at, if I was in charge I’d stand down the moderate rebels and let Russia get on with it …

        And great if they tend to stay … They can pay the social welfare, and feed the refugee’s …

I am wagering a bet that Saudi King Salman, Custodian of the 2 Holy Mosques, gave his royal “ok” for this statement to appear online, even though the clerics who wrote it up are supposedly not aligned with the government, and there is no mention of the king’s name on the statement. I wrote to King Salman several months ago, asking His Royal Highness to release Raif Badawi and his attorney, but His Majesty never wrote back. Still, I am glad I voiced my opinion. It is always good to put freedom out there.

    After watching Saudi power sliding, ruining perfectly good cars, the Iranians may be the wise bet. The Saudis may knock each other out of the sky.

  8. Frankly, I would really like to see things ramp up big time over there in the arm pit of the world.

    The following two things need to happen, though:

    1) Merkel needs to be overthrown. She has turned into a raving madwoman and the unrest is escalating for her to be removed. Then we’d see the borders shut down for the Islamic colonization and masses of these jihadi monsters would be sent back.

    2) The United States and Britain need to completely remove their militaries from the region. They serve no purpose and cost so much and put so many civilized human beings in danger from Islamic savages, it makes absolutely no sense for them to be there.

    And once that happens, wouldn’t it be a GREAT show? The whole place a boiling cauldron of Islamic murder — shi’ite vs sunni. Power mad Putin pouring in his military. Iran draining its resources and ability to finance its nuclear ambitions. The human garbage Saudis and all the rest of those pig-dog Sunni gulf states seeing their glass cities being bombed all to hell as they spend, spend, spend buying everything they can from the US Military Industrial Complex.   12. In Iraq, I see reports that ISIS carried out a mass execution of about 70 Sunni tribesmen, I’m a bit hesitant to always pin the mess on one party really.

  15. Saudi Arabia is the arch enemy of all democratic countries. Why do politicians not see this? If we go back to 9/11 most of the hijackers were Saudi nationals, Osama was Saudi, Mecca is in Saudi Arabia (which I know politicians see as some special divine holy city that’s untouchable, but I think bombarding the crap out of Meccad specifically during the Haaj and refusing to relent until all jihadist groups surrendered, we might actually make some progress in defeating them. Muslims are an enemy without borders, all muslim countries contribute to the anti western jihad in some way, but they still have a capital and they probably care about the precious cities of Mecca& Medina than they do about their holy war or their lives. After all wouldn’t the destruction of Mecca and a no-negotiation, no-mercy demand for jihadist surrender somehow be viewed in their brainwashed minds as the wrath of Allah ? Hell they might even start believing their own taqiyya ,that it really is a “religion of peace” and that non-muslim liberal scholars and ignorant moderate muslims have the correct interpretation of the koran after all. This is all a hypothetical dream but I cant help wondering not only “why” we didn’t invade Saudi Arabia after 911 instead of Iraq and Afghanistan,but also “what if”…

    • Borderline personality disorder among Muslims? It certainly looks like it! However, I think jihadists mostly exhibit ‘INTERMITTENT EXPLOSIVE PERSONALITY DISORDER’.

      -several episodes of impulsive behavior that result in serious damage to either persons or property, wherein
      -the degree of the aggressiveness is grossly disproportionate to the circumstances or provocation, and

The Saudis are against ISIS, but they can’t support the Shia in Syria and Lebanon, but Persia can, and does, so they permit a small group of Imams to support ISIS, all of which is unofficial, cuz the New Caliphate fully intends to destroy The Kingdom.     Syrian Opposition Reactions To The Russian Military Intervention In Syria

    In their initial reactions to the Russian airstrikes in Syria, Syrian opposition figures harshly condemned what they characterized as “occupation” and “crimes against humanity” on the part of Russia.
    Those who spoke out against Russia’s actions included Khaled Khoja, chairman of the Syrian National Coalition of Revolutionary and Opposition Forces; former National Coalition chairman Burhan Ghalioun; and former National Coalition figure and prominent oppositionist Dr. Kamal Al-Labwani, who denounced the Russian military intervention in Syria as the beginning of a world war against the Muslims.

    Syrian physician and human rights activist Dr. Kamal Al-Labwani, a prominent opposition figure who split from the National Coalition in 2014 after accusing it of being corrupt and autocratic,[4] issued a stinging condemnation of the Russian military intervention in Syria. In an article for the opposition website all4syria.info, Al-Labwani accused Russia of launching a racist war against Islam and the Muslim peoples, and calls on the Muslim countries and factions to put aside their differences and unite in combating Russian aggression in the Middle East. The following is a translation of Al-Labwani’s article

    The Islamic State (ISIS) Establishes ‘Media Points’ In Syria, Iraq, Libya To Indoctrinate Caliphate Citizens And Enhance Its Cyber Activities On The Ground: A One-Year Review

    Introduction

    The “media points” of the Islamic State (ISIS) are cyber information booths in cities and towns across all areas controlled by ISIS, that provide religious and ISIS-related materials to the public.
    This effort, which ISIS launched during the Eid Al-Fitr holiday in late July 2014, consists, according to the organization, of “stationary spots [that are] scattered geographically across general areas” that distribute da’wa-related materials, screen “jihadi productions on display screens,” and “transfer [those materials] to mobile [devices] via Bluetooth and RAMs…”
    According to ISIS, the campaign has generated much interest among the locals and has been very well received.

    In the past year, media points have spread to multiple countries with territories controlled by ISIS and its affiliates: first to Syria, then to Iraq, and, most recently, to Libya.
    Currently, ISIS media points are located in Al-Raqqa, Mayadeen, Furat Province, Deir Al-Zour, Jarabulus, Aleppo, Al-Kheir Province, Sabikhan, Shaddadi, and “Eastern Division” in Syria; Mosul, Al-Falluja Province, Al-Huwaija, Ninawa, Al-Jazirah Province, Al-Sharqat Province, Dijla Province, and Anbar in Iraq; and Derna and Sirte in Libya, as well as in locations that are not specified.
    They take different forms – simple booths, trucked-in prefab units, impromptu open-air movie theaters, and more.
