Bishop Eva Brunne has proposed to remove the Christian symbols of the Seamen’s Church in Freeport to make it more inviting for visiting sailors from other religions.

The bishop wants to temporarily make the Seamen’s Church available to all, for example by marking the direction of Mecca and removing Christian symbols, as is already done in common prayer rooms at airports and in some hospital chapel.

“Making a room available for people of other faiths does not mean that we are not defenders of our own faith. Priests are called to proclaim Christ. We do that every day and in every meeting with people. But that does not mean that we are stingy toward people of other faiths,” writes Bishop Eva Brunne…

Has aroused protests

The proposal has triggered protests. Patrik Pettersson, priest of the Oscars parish in Stockholm, thinks that the proposal is noteworthy and writes on his blog:

“The church chapel can not reasonably be equated with prayer rooms at airports and hospital chapels anyway. The Christian churches and chapels are not public areas at any time.”

And Seamen’s Mission Director Kiki Wetterberg does not agree with the bishop.

“I have no problem with Muslim or Hindu sailors coming here and praying. But I believe that we are a Christian church, so we keep the symbols. If I visit a mosque, I do not ask them to take down their symbols. It’s my choice to go in there,” she says to the newspaper Dagen.

    If one really believed that Christianity was true and was the means of salvation for all men, then displaying a cross and other Christian symbols would be seen as eminently GENEROUS, not stingy.

    If, however, one believes not in Christianity but in the modern religion of multiculturalism, which says that all religions basically say the same thing, the differences aren’t important, and the important thing is that we all get along–then her position is perfectly logical.

    I am struggling as to why a Christian pastor would remove Christian symbols…….but put up Islamic ones…such as the direction of Mecca.

    Surely, at worst, both symbols of Islam and Christianity should be displayed? Otherwise, he is being offensive to his own flock?

        • The Israeli/Jews are at the front line of this battle, unwillingly, I’m sure.

          In 20-30 years, much of Europe will be like Israel, or maybe worse. In fact, some parts are already similar (no-go zones, parallel societies). Probably, the demographics for some of Europe are actually worse than of Israel, and the Muslims less integrated (a large part of the Israeli Arab/Muslim community is reasonably well integrated into the broader society).

          Their fight will be everyone’s fight. It’s not really a Western/Muslim fight: it’s a Sane/Insane fight. There is a degree of correlation between Sane and Western, but there are a lot of insane Westerners, such as this Bishop. There are also sane Muslims, such as the ones that choose to serve in the IDF. Sadly, the correlation is fairly strong, and I feel badly for the sane Muslims – but not as much as I feel badly for sane Westerners!

He did write some very anti Semitic tracts ( much to his shame) when he was old and in pain that the Nazis used to bolster their persecution of a God’s chosen people- the Jews.         • The problem with Jews are Judaism, and many don’t see the difference between the people and their teaching. Luther was absolutely right about Jewish teachings and their synagogues – a direct link from the same pharisees that Jesus criticized, since modern Judaism is based on their teaching. If the Talmud says that Jesus burns in shit in hell, then I won’t call it anti-Caucasian, but a horrible heresy, something that should be avoided like the Muslims, their book, and their false prophet.

          Luther was just a much a human as the pope, he just spoke the truth of many things, that also led humans into war. Witch-burning is nothing compared to the wars of religion that happened when protestants and Catholics clashed in Europe. Only the first uprising cost the lives of about 100.000 serfs that wanted freedom.

          People used to fear witches, since there were in fact people that called on the devil and cursed other and held on to old pagan beliefs. People believed in witchcraft, so of course some dabbled in it. There were good ones, cunning-people, and bad ones. If anyone cursed somebody, and that person died, then it was seen as magic rather then a coincidence, as we would today, rather then what “logic” people in the middle ages saw in things. (Like moles on the skin being “marks of the beast” etc, throwing people in the water to see if they sank etc.)

          Luther was paranoid in fear of the devil, and saw himself in the midst of an Apocalypse of his making. He really thought the pope were the anti-Christ, and Christians in North and South of Europe really thought the fought against an army from hell no matter what sort of Christianity they thought they followed. As Jesus said: “I don’t come to spread peace, but the sword”. He is still causing division in the world. Like with this website, it’s on one side of the division.

I was criticizing Judaism (the religion), it have nothing to do with Christianity, just like Islam. I’m sure a Rabbi would be just as eager to denounce Christianity to be a heresy incompatible with Judaism. People used to be horribly superstitious before the Enlightenment and did all sort of weird things to appease good powers and protect against evil, things that have nothing to do with Christendom. Old pagan traditions are still today alive and well, like Christmas, or Yule as it was celebrated here in Scandinavia, with a decorated tree inside as a symbol of fertility to celebrate winter-solstice and we still celebrate summer-solstice with bonfires, in Sweden they still dance around the maypole, in Iceland they still revere Dwarfs (or Dark-Elves) and don’t construct on sites where it’s believed they live.

  10. This Bishop, the Archbishop of Canterbury and any other member of the clergy will have to answer to JESUS CHRIST at their death. Sadly the final judgement handed to them will not be good. These people are knowingly leading their flock down the pathway to hell therefore the punishment for them will be severe.
    I urge every Christian to become familiar with the Bible. If what a preacher is saying fails the test of the Gospel then he/she is to be publicly challenged and renounced. Failure to do so by a Christian who knows the truth commits a sin by omission.

The greatest Christian theologian of the modern era, Karl Barth, argued that even the Bible is not error free because it was written by fallen men. Barth argues that all theology must be based solely on Jesus Christ and not by believing the Bible is a direct revelation from God. Barth’s theology has been all pervasive by influencing every Christian from Martin Luther King to Pope Paul 11. Even Billy Graham admired Barth, and Barth’s theology leads to universalism. According to Barth’s theology, both liberal and evangelical theology is idolatry. Religion, said Barth, is unbelief.

We do have a lot of jokes about Swedes being stupid here in Norway, and there’s still the lingering disgust for their neutrality when we were resisting Hitlers occupation, but this is betrayal beyond all belief. Atheism has gone so far in Scandinavia (up to 90% i think – “normal” is to not be Christian, other religions are OK) that some politically correct-brainwashed humanists will actually agree with something like this, but most likely she will just give growth to the far-right politics that is on the rise. Hopefully she will provoke someone so much that they will realize that they have some Christendom left deep inside.

With the Lutheran Church of Sweden probably making Herr Doktor Martin roll over in his Saxon grave with the follies of people like Episkopette Brunne, and the various Free churches (of an Evangelical stripe) providing stock villains to Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy and the various Nordic Noir detective shows I sometimes watch, I think it’s safe to say that Sweden is going down the tubes. I’d like to quote one of my great-grandmothers to the effect that a Swede is nothing but a Norwegian with the brains knocked out, but I must admit that Gamle Norge isn’t so far behind.

I met a married couple from Berlin, Germany today in NYC who are taking their annual vacation in the US. Their English was excellent, and they were in their 40’s. I asked them their opinion about the recent influx of immigrants in Germany, what other Germans thought about it, such as neighbors and friends, and what did they think would happen to Germany and its long-time citizens in the future, as in a prediction. This couple said they were very skeptical that Germany would continue on its present path with such a large projected influx of people since it is not such a big country, and the economy would not be able to sustain such large numbers of immigrants. They also felt that Chancellor Merkel was bending over backwards to please the EU, and that their outlook for the future of their country was grim and dark. They were not happy with Chancellor Merkel and predicted she may not be in office after the next 2 years. (I don’t know if she is up for re-election then.) They did not know why Germany was not taking in Christian immigrants and only Muslim immigrants. That is my “report”, just as they said it to me! Take care, graven. ?

          Thank you, Linde. I haven’t been commenting as much here as I would like–my husband and I are dealing with his mom’s illness–and all the resulting financial, medical, legal, bureaucratic, and emotional stuff this entails–we are both a bit burned out right now. And since my schedule is more flexible–I’m working on my own projects–I have naturally wound up dealing with as much of this stuff as possible.

          Thanks for sharing the story of the German couple you met–I’m deeply worried about what Germany and the rest of Europe is facing right now from the Muslim hordes–but I’m glad some people there are at least somewhat savvy about the terrible threat this entails.

Somehow a rape epidemic and a victim-blaming response to it was not outrageous. This may be because the Womens Studies feminist crowd are afraid of Moslems, specifically Moslem Men.           It’s true, the assault-type of rape is over-represented by Muslims here. There’s no integration. At a normal day while taking the bus or tram, virtually all immigrants speak the language of where their from, their women walk around covered even in the summers, the men have the little hat on their head and large pants in case they give birth to Allah and don’t want to crush the egg. It’s rare to see someone that genuinely respect our nation that have sheltered them from war and persecution. I like to think that If I came from a similar situation, I would at least learn the language of the people that saved me and respect their customs, and keep mine insofar that they would not be offensive to the people around me. I would certainly not rape their women and expect to be treated humanely in prison, like here. Or talk about Sharia at the Mosque and still expect to be treated according to human-rights.

      Having been warned by an aquaintance who works there, that muslims had ‘requested’ ( ie: demanded) that religious symbols should not be allowed, I furnished myself with pictures of the Cross, and Christ, also various Wiccan symbols, and Bhuddist ditto, pkus the address of the JW website, and left them there. I might add, the *only* religious symbols I saw there were several mohammedan ‘prayer rugs’.

The clergy prefers non-believing pastors that view Christ as a social reformer and not as the Son of God. For a social reformer with absolutely no faith in the afterlife, it makes sense to prioritize ecumenism over adherence to the true Christian faith.

My opinion on it is that Islamic spokesmen know how to weave a good story, leaving out important details, and only presenting one side. And the whole issue of who-is-in-control-of- what in Israel, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, etc is a very complex and extended issue. It is often difficult to understand, due to who tells the events. And let us not forget that most Christians who attend Protestant churches know nothing about taquiyya–lying to advance Islam. I by no means agree with the episodes of this link, but it explains from the Palestinian point of view, what the historical context is for them.     Consider this: the ancient Pharaoh Akhenaten introduced the worship of one god, named Aten, to Egypt in approximately 1320 BC. Now, is Aten the same god as Allah? Is Aten the same god as the Trinity? Would it be okay for anyone to worship Aten at a Christian church? Would it be okay for Muslims to substitute the name Aten for Allah and to worship Aten at the mosque? Worshiping one god does not equate to knowing and worshiping the same god that others worship.

    Any Christian who enables or assists others in following and worshiping any god but THE GOD of the Bible is in violation of the first of the Ten Commandments. Being tolerant of the beliefs of others I can understand. But removing from your own CHURCH the symbols representing the sacrifice Christ made for the love of humanity … removing those symbols because those who do not believe in Christ’s sacrifice may be offended by seeing those symbols … is the same as being ashamed of Christ. This is not opening the eyes of the blind. This is not releasing the captive nor freeing the oppressed. Neither is this in keeping with Christ’s directive to His followers … and especially to His Church’s bishops … to teach the gospel to all the nations of the Earth.

    This is surrender and submission to a false god and if this “bishop” understands the love of Christ then she will find another way to bring His lost sheep into the care of the Good Shepherd.

If there were no cross, and no sacrificial death of Jesus on the Cross for our sins, there would be no Christian church today.
