Who’s Oppressing Palestinian Christians? Georgetown Lecture Blames Israel

Oct 21, 2015 7:37 pm By Cinnamon Stillwell

Naim_Ateek

Amid widespread and ongoing Islamist attacks against Christians in the Middle East, Rev. Dr. Naim Ateek, co-founder of the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center, informed an audience at Georgetown University that “the government of Israel” and Israeli “settlers” pose the greatest threat to Palestinian Christians.

A Palestinian Anglican priest now living in the U.S, Ateek’s claims are typical of Sabeel, an organization that advocates “resistance to the Israeli occupation” by blaming the plight of Palestinian Christians on Jews rather than Islamic supremacism in Palestinian society.

The recent lecture sponsored by Georgetown’s Saudi-funded Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding (ACMCU) was titled “Christians in the Holy Land” and included Jonathan Kuttab, co-founder of the Mandela Institute for Palestinian Prisoners. About fifteen students, faculty members, and activists, including School of Foreign Service Professor Yvonne Haddad and Kathy Aquilina, program director of the non-profit organization Initiatives of Change, attended the discussion.

In keeping with ACMCU events, Ateek and Kuttab were in agreement on almost all of the issues and no alternate point of view was represented.

Despite strong evidence of media bias against Israel, particularly in coverage of the current crisis, Ateek claimed that the American media is hiding “what’s really happening” from the public.

The news is terrible when you’re looking at what the settlers are doing, what the government of Israel is doing. . . . It’s very extreme. I think people need to know and the news does not reflect the reality of the situation back at home. . . . If they [Americans] would see what’s happening there, I think they would begin to change but they are not able to see.

Pointing to Israel’s demographics, Kuttab, a human rights attorney, argued that the government is not pluralistic:

Israel thinks if they become less than 51 percent they would be totally squashed, and as long as they have the 51 percent majority, they can squash the non-Jews. The problem is with the basic premise that Israel is and was intended to be a Jewish state for Jews rather than a state for Jews and Arabs who happen to be indigenous.

To the contrary, Israel’s Knesset, or parliament, currently has thirteen Arab members, while the country is one of the few in the region where Arabs, including women, have the right to vote. Moreover, according to the U.S. State Department’s International Religious Freedom Report for 2014, Israel’s Supreme Court has “repeatedly held that the Basic Law on Human Dignity and Liberty protects freedom to practice religious beliefs.”

Yet, to hear Ateek tell it:

Almost at every level of life, almost every level of life, the situation is getting bad. If we’re looking at Israel, not the occupied Palestine, Israel itself, the question of the Christian schools – they are having a hard time now. Israel is cutting off the funding which the government gives to the private schools.

In fact, Israel recently began funding private Christian schools following a month-long strike. Public schools, regardless of religious affiliation, have always received full government funding.

Ateek then used one incident to paint a picture of widespread anti-Christian persecution:

They see some of these right-wing settlers or extremist Jews targeting Christians. For example, the church in Tiberias near the Sea of Galilee is burned because it is a Christian Church and Israel has not done much about it. They’re now trying to pay for it, but in the beginning they said they were not going to pay for it, so things are worse than what people think.

Israeli authorities indicted two Jewish suspects in connection with the June, 2015 arson attack on the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes in Tabgha, while Israel’s Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein overruled the tax authority’s denial of payment of damages. In addition to the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Committee donating funds to help rebuild the church, thousands of people attended a June 21 solidarity rally and church officials have reported an upsurge in support from Israelis of all faiths.

Undeterred by the facts, Ateek continued:

You’re really dealing with people who are very extremist Jews who do not want to see Christians – that’s it’s a Jewish country and it’s only for Jews. It’s against democracy, which means everyone has a place, and I think that’s becoming less and less back home.

From such statements, one would never know that “extremist Jews” make up a tiny portion of the population and that their acts have been condemned by both Israeli authorities and American Jewish groups. This is in marked contrast to the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, both of whom employ genocidal language, incite violence against Jews as a matter of course, and have never apologized for doing so.

Attempting to portray Christians and Muslims as victims of Jewish aggression, Ateek concluded, “They don’t differentiate between a Christian and a Muslim. We are in the same boat together in this.”

Kuttab told the audience too much time and energy has been wasted trying to figure out if a one- or two-state solution would end the Arab-Israeli conflict:

I personally have decided several years ago not to even engage in that debate. What we can address are specific issues. We can talk about human rights, we can talk about equality, we can talk about violence and non-violence, we can talk about sending less rather than more weapons to either party.

Yet a one-state solution would guarantee the end of Israel as a Jewish state—a draconian outcome unacceptable to most Israelis and unaddressed by the panel.

Ateek argued that Israel does not want peace, claiming it is comfortable controlling the Palestinian people. He maintained that the U.S. has “never” been able to take a “neutral or objective” position toward the situation and therefore the conflict remains unresolved.

The panel’s lack of balance allowed such statements to go unchallenged, as for example by pointing out that the Arab states have repeatedly waged war in the hopes of destroying Israel, that the Oslo Accords—turned down by then-PLO chairman Yasser Arafat—would have given the Palestinians virtually everything they requested, and that Hamas, which the U.S. has designated a terrorist organization, launches frequent attacks against Israeli civilians.

In presenting only one side of the conflict, ACMCU failed in its obligation to offer scholarly, rigorous, and balanced commentary on a complex and ongoing problem. Its bias reflects that of Middle East studies on the whole: a discipline in dire need of reform with less concern for genuine debate than with ensuring the domination of anti-Israel, anti-American views. Prince Alwaleed is getting precisely what he paid for.

Georgetown University has become an institution of lower learning where Israel is regularly excoriated, where the religion of Islam is completely exculpated, and which has sold its Christian soul to Islamic supremacists with loads of money. In short, Georgetown University has become a disgrace of a university.

By now, one either knows this or should know it. Georgetown is part of the problem and certainly not part of the solution. Shame on Georgetown, at least for a very long time and perhaps forever.

I have a Jewish friend who came here from Egypt who’s told me the same thing. But with the indoctrination they are getting in a Muslim society, it would be surprising if they didn’t follow this line. Cut them some slack and support bringing them to the free world where they can shed their prejudices.

Christians in Muslim dominated lands, David, have been dhimmified for centuries. It’s actually a survival technique and more of a shame on Islam than on the Christians, though it should be instructive to all of sense and knowledge (let’s see here, that would exclude such fools as the present occupant of the Oval Office and the newly elected PM of Canada) that Islam wants no compromise in the final analysis.

For Islam, it’s all Islam, all the time. No Golden Rule for all, only for Muslims.

The only efficacious way to oppose this Muslim rot is to identify Islam for the longest-lived and best disguised evil of all time. And so counting on (or even blaming) Christians in the Middle East is really not worth the effort for the reasons I have already stated above, though I don’t blame you for doing so since cravenness before Islam ALWAYS has something objectionable about it even if done for pure survival reasons.

Christians love and respect Jews as they know that Christianity is an offshoot of Judaism. They both know the same God AS ONE GOD.

Unlike Islam these guys(Christans/Jews) don’t have to spread all kinds of lies and slander to SPREAD the lie that Christians and Muslims worship the same god. To me this is just a ploy to take some unsuspecting on board to convert to the satanic killing cult.

What else can be expected when the funding is coming from moslims and they play such a large part in what is published for citizen consumption. If one looks in the large cans by the curb, one is bound to find garbage. If one wishes to find good things, one must look elsewhere than the cans by the curb.

It is probably because the attitudes of secularized Jews in America are very Christian friendly. In the Holy Land, there is still serious tension. Don’t forget that throughout the ages Jews viewed Jesus as a false god, trying to take over the place of the One True God of Israel. Christianity was the new archenemies, the new Baal, if you will. Talking to Jews, many are actually friendlier to Islam, and Muslims are usually friendlier to Judaism.
As an Armenian familiar with the Armenian community in Jerusalem, I can attest that this isn’t only an Arab Christian issue. Armenians have issues with Israeli authorities too. This is a separate from Islamic suprematism, which is a serious issue altogether.

Where did the majority of Sephardic Jews go after their expulsion from Iberia?

Why did the Ottomans genocide Christians only but left Jews alone?

Why were Jews present in so many North African and Middle Eastern countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen) where Christianity used to exist but dissapeared, in addition to the countries where both Christians and Jews lived (Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Palestine).

The Hadith doesn’t say something will happen in the last days. It says a certain event will happen before the last hour and that could be hundreds of years before the last hour comes.

There is a Hadith which says that the hour will not come until the Muslims fight the Turks, who have small eyes, flat noses, and flat and red faces.

The Arab Muslims fought against the non-Muslim Turkic Khaganate in Transoxania. The Turks of the Turkic Khaganate had small eyes, flat noses and flat and red faces.

Now the Turkic peoples like the Kazakh and Kyrgyz, (who fit the description of small eyes, flat noses, and flat and red faces) are Muslims.

Do you also get that any non-Muslim is prey to Islamic supremacist designs in this world and is not accorded a Golden Rule for all and can only hope not to be the dhimmi du jour for typical Muslim repression of ALL non-Muslims? Yeah, do get at least this? Probably not if you’ve bought into one of the greatest lies in all of mankind’s history———Islam.

The majority of Sephardic Jews headed to the Ottoman Empire and Morocco.

So many Sephardic Jews came that they in fact culturally genocided the earlier Jewish rites practiced in Asia and Africa and resulted in nearly all following Sephardic practices.

          Yet more crap from Mazo:

Why did the Ottomans genocide Christians only but left Jews alone?
          ……………………………..

I’m so sick of hearing this garbage. The fact is that Jews–*all non-Muslims* were violently targeted and murdered during what is known too narrowly as the Armenian Genocide.

Armenian, Greek, Assyrian, and Levantine Christians were targeted–and so were Jews.

There were comparatively few Jews in Turkey itself, and most of them lived in Istanbul and Smyrna.

The idea that they were spared stems from the geography of Smyrna–ravening Mohammedans deliberately torched the Armenian and Greek quarters, but not the Jewish quarter–but only because the Jewish quarter was immediately adjacent to the Muslim quarter in that city.

In 1905 there were over 25,000 Jews in Smryna–by 1929, there were fewer than 10,000. Today–in what was renamed Izmir after the terrible massacre of Infidels there in 1922–there are no more than 1,700 Jews remaining in the city.

          More:

The Hadith doesn’t say something will happen in the last days. It says a certain event will happen before the last hour and that could be hundreds of years before the last hour comes.
          ……………………………..

And what is that “certain event”? Why, the Muslim genocide of the Jews:

          Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Apostle said, “The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. “O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him.”

          Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 177

And the above is not just one Hadith–there are at least half a dozen that say virtually the same thing.

        • Mazo says

Cravenmirage is so fully of shyte she is deliberately lying, no way even a dumb, retarded alzheimer’s patient can claim with a straight face that Jews were targeted in the Armenian Genocide.

Jews were not targeted at all, not at any period during the genocide.

Only Christians and Yazidis were targeted by Turks for rape and genocide.

Besides the fire (which was manually set by the Turkish army to burn only the Christian quarters), the Turkish army manually went through Smyrna to rape Armenian and Greek women and slaughter Armenian and Greek men by hand. They dragged the Greek Orthodox Bishop Chrysostomos, tortured him, gouged his eyes out and killed him. Oh, and they took him to a Jewish barbershop to do it.

The Turks did no such thing to the Jews of Smyrna and did not touch a single hair on their heads.

The Jewish population in Smyrna and Turkey in general has decreased because most of them moved to israel. Not because of genocide like the Christians suffered.

          _________

Cravenmirage is confirmed to be a lying retard again.

There are also half a dozen Sahih hadith which say that “The hour will not be established until the Muslims fight with the Turks” or “The hour will not be established until you fight with the Turks”.

Turks are explicitly mentioned by name in those Ahadith just like Jews.

Muslim scholars have confirmed that they believe that those events already came to pass, during the Middle Ages when Muslim Arabs fought against pagan Turks from Central Asia. They believe those Ahadith have already been fulfilled. And at no point did Muslims genocide the Turks.

Read The Haj by Leon Uris and put to rest, once and for all, that Palestinian “right of return” bulls**t. (And for the idiots who remind me it’s “only a novel”; do as I did and fact-check it. You’ll see that the history illustrated in the book is completely accurate. That’s why they call them “historical” novels.)

The Case for Israel by Alan Dershowitz. This is THE book that goes down the list, one by one, of all the accusations leveled at Israel. Dershowitz goes on to destroy each and every one. Read This BOOK!

The Israeli Solution: A One-State Plan for Peace in the Middle East by Caroline B. Glick. The first four chapters of this book ALONE are worth the price of this book.

Instead of reading these books and refuting them point by point this is usually the response I get from cowards with phony monikers in addition to name calling:

From Anti-Zealot: “Neither Uris nor Dershowitz have any credibility as historians. A rather selective choice of readings. I suspect Ms. Glick is equally unreliable”.

Never any substance. Never saying exactly why they have no credibility. Just like when they call Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller “racists” without ever coming up with one example of them EVER saying or writing anything “bigoted”, “hate-mongering” or…drum roll please…..”racist”.

Strange man this, obviously not a real Christian despite his fancy title and his dog-collar. Of course the Anglican Church, Church of England and other man-made churches lost the plot and left true Christianity a hundred or more years ago. My experience of Jews is that the majority are very nice people who would gladly help the Palestinians to turn Gaza into a sea-side paradise and a centre of business prosperity. If only the people there would stop firing rockets at them and killing them and get to some constructive work. Yes there are some Christ denying, radical Jews, like like the ones whose actions led to the crucifixion Christ but they are a minority. Tell this Priest to get back to his Bible and read the part that the God he says he worships and serves actually promised the land to Israel. Self professed servant of God obey your Master and stop contradicting His will for Israel.. Then there is Genesis 13 verse 14 where the last word of this verse of promise is “forever”. If this man claims to be a servant of God then he should obey His Master who has established Israel and will continue to support them and top defying the Word of His Lord..

He has whitewashed the bloody Jihad against Israel, writing a meretricious book titled, “Justice, and only Justice, a Palestinian Theology of Liberation”.

I’m ashamed to say this moral idiot received his Doctor of Divinity degree from the San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1985. Clearly, he picked up his bullsh*t use of the terms “peace” and “justice” and “resistance” here.

He founded the The Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center, which sole purpose is to “encourage Christians from around the world to work for justice and to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people”.

By the way, “Sabeel” means “the path”, which is another word for Shari’ah.

Most sickening of all, he whitewashes violent Jihad in his book, “Faith and the Intifada”.

He had this to say about Muslim suicide bombings of Israeli civilians: “If Israel labels them as terrorists”, he wrote, “they are, after all, the product of its own making.”

Cravenmirage, God is a word of Germanic pagan origin, Hell derives from the name of a Norse goddess, so stop using those terms since you apparently don’t believe basic vocabulary can be used across different religions.

Arab Christians refer to their God as Allah, they call their Prophets as Nabi, they use the exact same word for martyr as Muslims do (shaheed) to refer to Christian martyrs, and they use sabeel and all other basic Arabic words. The idea that sabeel refers to Shari’ah is completely asinine and laughable.
