A dawning of common sense in besieged Europe?
“Poland’s new government rejects migrant quotas after Paris attacks,” RT, November 14, 2015:
Poland’s future minister for European affairs said his government will not accept EU-mandate quotas for refugees following the terrorist attacks in France.
Konrad Szymanski, who will take the office on Monday as part of the country’s new conservative government, said his cabinet didn’t agree with their predecessors’ commitment to take a share in the refugee burden.
Now, “in the face of the tragic acts in Paris, we do not see the political possibilities to implement” the plan, he told the right-leaning news portal wPolityce.pl.
Poland joins a quartet of EU members that have defied Brussels’ plan to redistribute the inflow of asylum seekers from the Middle East and North Africa among members of the union. Security concerns are high among the reasons touted by Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, which don’t want to accept predominantly Muslim refugees on their soil….

Wise step. The Poles aren’t dumb, despite the asinine opinions of some people who crack “Polack jokes.” And, if POland needs immigrants and guest workers due to demographic problems (low birth rate, many young people moving out), then bring in Christian (predominantly Roman Catholic) Filipinos, or even genuine Christian refugees from the Middle East and other Muslim regions.
Fred says
When I was a kid, I heard and repeated those dumb polark jokes, As an adult I know how foolish I was.
In fact; just the opposite is true.
The Polish people and scientists have saved Europe’s A$$ several times
They were the first to crack the German enigma machine (Despite Hollywood’s lie lionizing Alan Turing.)
They gave us Marie Curie the only woman to win 2 Nobel science prizes. (Bet you did not know she was polish.)
The list goes on and on. I know so much more now that I wish I was Polish!
Valeriekat says
The Poles certainly captured the Enigma machine but did not decode it. Surely everyone knows Marie Curie was Polish hence Polonium?

How ironic if Eastern Europe ends up saving Western Europe by example. Of course, I do not include in Eastern Europe Russia, which looks upon countries like Poland, Hungary and Estonia as, a la George Kennan, “vassals or enemies.” And don’t take my word for this, ask the Poles, Hungarians and Estonians for confirmation here.
Right now, Russia is a disgrace under Putin and so are many Western European nations like the UK, Germany and The Netherlands under Cameron, Merkel and Rutte respectively. Ditto for America under the monstrous fool, Obama, and the newly installed fool in Canada, Trudeau. And please, no support for Putin, who is a tactical thinker only, one who stupidly sees the West as an enemy, one who has cozied up to Iran again and again, one who has the typical Russian abysmal understanding of freedom, and who is a profoundly corrupt man, though by now an exceedingly rich one.
No relief in sight, courtesy of Islam and all those who won’t take on Islam and call it out for what it is, i.e., the ultimate in spiritual totalitarianism. Perhaps mankind is mad, speaking in the aggregate here of course. Assuming so does certainly explain a lot.
RonaldB says
” Russia is a disgrace under Putin …And please, no support for Putin”
I’m afraid we kind of part ways on this, Wellington.
Putin is an autocrat: no freedoms under him. Russians are not free to criticize him, and investigative journalists in Russia have a short life expectancy…oh, and plutocrats who develop political ambitions in Russia are also likely to wind up in Russian hoosegows or worse.
Putin ruthlessly follows the interests of Russia (and himself) as he sees them. That’s not necessarily a bad trait. Are his policies worse than those of the US? Is Russia easier on Iran than our negotiators were? What the hell was the US doing, sponsoring a coup in the Ukraine, which is right next to Russia and very much in the Russian sphere of interest?
Russia is providing support for the Syrian dictator Assad. If Assad falls, can we realistically expect any outcome except the dramatic expansion of the Islamic State? What rebel group is going to resist the Islamic State for even a few weeks?
Wellington says
One, RonaldB, does not have to conclude that Putin has done everything wrong before asserting, as I did, ” …please, no support for Putin,…” Just because he stumbles into the truth from time to time should not lead to exoneration of him in the least. The man fulfills almost every negative stereotype of the typical Russian leader——xenophobic, paranoid, corrupt, brutal, ignorant of the West, and virtually always thinking tactically and not strategically. I do agree with his support of Assad but surely the irony cannot be lost on you that one authoritarian supporting another authoritarian who just happens to be the best of a bad bunch deserves no real respect. Putin remains abysmal for me and that’s my bottom line.
Warthog says
Sorry mate, but in this comment you just show a typical Western attitude to rest of the world i.e. “everyone thinks like us”.
Putin is the President of Russia and first of all he has the duty to be accepted and supported by Russian people by representing and acting on Russian interest.
From Western point of view he can appear “xenophobic, paranoid, corrupt, brutal, ignorant of the West, and virtually always thinking tactically and not strategically” but these seem to be the virtues of a leader that are appreciated by Russian people. Seriously.
This is in general the first and biggest sin of Western politicians – they are unable to acknowledge that people differ throughout the world. How many iterations had Americans had on Middle East? Why are they doing it all wrong again and again? Because they cannot understand that they ideas simply do not work there. The same with Ukraine.
Putin is a thug, but he acknowledges his strengths and weaknesses, also he tries to understand the situation before acting on it. He sees an opportunity, he takes it.
Two latest examples:
Ukraine – West arguments are to do with wealth and freedom that it offers, but the further to the East the more these concepts are abstract (in Western meaning) to people living there. Putin does not promise wealth and freedom, he just acts on the fact, that Eastern Ukraine is mostly Russian speaking so therefore pro-Russia. In longer term Western arguments are stronger, but it will take time before they are heard in the whole Ukraine and many unexpected can happen before (e.g. EU does exist anymore).
Syria – US and allies try to deal with ISIS by air strikes plus encouraging all parties around to fight with ISIS on the ground. Problem is that these parties (Iraq government, Assad, Kurds, Syrian opposition, Turkey etc.) are often more interested to fight each other than to really fight ISIS. Putin does not hope to encourage anyone, he bets on one party (Assad), books support (Iran, Hezbollah) and acts then. Again, in longer perspective, West is right not to bet on Shia nor Sunni so then whatever the outcome is, they can still find friends in the region. But that strategy can take dozens of years to bring any fruits, while in the meantime many people die (also Western people like French) which will put in doubt the sense of the strategy.
Wellington says
Sorry, Warthog, but I don’t think the rest of the world “thinks like us.” I don’t know how you could have concluded that from my posts.
What I do think is that Western Civilization (this would not really include Russia—–as Pope John II not so subtly pointed out, “Poland was about as far east as one could go and still be entirely within the orb of Western Civilization”) has pioneered freedom like no other civilization on earth and I like freedom, I think it’s a good thing and it’s a shame if much of the world hasn’t been able to figure this out. What made America great above all things is freedom. What has kept Russia in a retarded state, basically a nation with nuclear weapons which is third world outside of a few metropolitan areas, is a dearth of freedom.
I give the Russians high marks for courage and for a great artistic and intellectual tradition, but they are abysmal on liberty. Problem is that other peoples being deficient on “the liberty thing” tends to make all kinds of trouble for free peoples. Not a single war over the past century has been fought between two truly free nations. In every conflict over the last hundred years or more at least one of the two sides has been authoritarian and not democratic in make-up. So, I would assert that while I don’t think the rest of the world thinks like us, it ought to.
I am not relativistic about freedom. It is a good thing, though it must be accompanied by self-discipline and a sense of responsibility (which in the West today sadly all too often it is not), and a dearth of it is not a good thing. Your turn if you care.
RonaldB says
McKinley justifies an imperialist war to “civilize” savages, i.e., force freedom down their throats.
Now, I realize you are not advocating armed intervention in another country, but our system of freedom is truly not for every people in every country at every time. They have to develop the perspective on their own. In the meantime, we can do business with despots, not as friends or allies, but as associates with a temporary common interest.
“When I next realized that the Philippines had dropped into our laps I confess I did not know what to do with them. I sought counsel from all sides—Democrats as well as Republicans—but got little help. I thought first we would take only Manila; then Luzon; then other islands perhaps also. I walked the floor of the White House night after night until midnight; and I am not ashamed to tell you, gentlemen, that I went down on my knees and prayed Almighty God for light and guidance more than one night. And one night late it came to me this way—I don’t know how it was, but it came: (1) That we could not give them back to Spain—that would be cowardly and dishonorable; (2) that we could not turn them over to France and Germany—our commercial rivals in the Orient—that would be bad business and discreditable; (3) that we could not leave them to themselves—they were unfit for self-government—and they would soon have anarchy and misrule over there worse than Spain’s was; and (4) that there was nothing left for us to do but to take them all, and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them, and by God’s grace do the very best we could by them, as our fellow-men for whom Christ also died. And then I went to bed, and went to sleep, and slept soundly, and the next morning I sent for the chief engineer of the War Department (our map-maker), and I told him to put the Philippines on the map of the United States (pointing to a large map on the wall of his office), and there they are, and there they will stay while I am President!”

Wellington says
You’re correct, RonaldB, that I don’t advocate trying to force freedom on those who are not prepared for it or who want it. I am familiar with that quote about McKinley. I also am familiar with the statement by John Quincy Adams who said something to the effect that we wish other nations well but we’re not going to force our ideas on others even though we are convinced we have the best ideas.
That’s it in a nutshell. The West, and particularly a few nations over the centuries like England, The Netherlands and America, have the best ideas as to how to govern a society, but it’s the others’ loss if they don’t learn by this. Some have and some haven’t and exigent circumstances, like the necessary occupation of Japan by America after WWII, will sometimes essentially force America into “forcing freedom” on others because, aside from the proper ethics of it, it serves our own interests (imagine that, Realpolitik sometimes doing real good). But I don’t want any Wilsonian idealism anymore than you do, though what a damn shame every country on earth hasn’t governed itself as America has. The world would be so much better off were this the case.
Kepha says
@Wellington, Warthog, and RonaldB
What John Q, Adams said was that the USA should be the well-wisher of liberty everywhere, but the champion only of its own.
While I am no fan of supporting some elusive “moderate rebel force” in Syria, which seems “moderate” only in the length of its beards (to paraphrase the late Oriana Fallacci), I also tend to look on Russia’s recent assertiveness (and downright aggression, frankly, in Ukraine) with a bit of trepidation. Yes, I respect Putin’s patriotism, his apparent reconciliation with the Eastern Orthodox Church (I wll go to my grave convinced that the fear of YHWH is the beginning of wisdom) and his opposition to ISIS.
But I cannot ignore that as a former intelligence head, his whole prior professional life was spent thinking in worst-case scenarios for his country–certainly reinforced by seeing the Soviet state collapse. His brinkmanship towards Ukraine and Estonia (where he could get into a real confrontation with NATO, meaning us) and gleefulness in seizing the opportunity that the O gave him to extend Russian influence once more into the Middle East strikes me as dangerous and is certainly tainted with a bit of vindictiveness towards the West. But, worst of all, he is friendly with the Iranian mullahs and would badly like to re-arm them (which is one reason why the nuclear arms deal was a mere wash).
I’m also not so sure that I’m for pushing liberty down everyone’s throat, even though I’m a screaming fan of free speech, free press, and free exercise of religion (at least mine). Sometimes, a soft authoritarianism under a fundamentally decent strongman or monarch who honors wisdom may be a lot better than a democracy of a petty, covetous, lazy, self-righteous, conniving, immoral, and thieving people who allow themselves to be led by scoundrels. Unhappily, decent strongmen and monarchs are also mortal, and who knows what might happen under their successors.

Just a note of reference
RonaldB said,
“What the hell was the US doing, sponsoring a coup in the Ukraine, which is right next to Russia and very much in the Russian sphere of interest? ”
It is not easy to see that point of view in the US.
The one sided MSM in the US tends to consistently and completely ignore Russia’s legitimate point of view.
Even while Muslims were butchering Yazidis, NPR in particular was doing non-stop demonizing of Putin over Ukraine and Crimea at Obama’s behest and all but ignoring ISIS, as well as Boko Haram, Al Shabab etc .

Jay Boo, one can recognize the terrible threat of Islam without feeling to the need to whitewash Putin’s ugly aggression in Ukraine, or his having journalists critical of his autocracy poisoned to death.

Jay Boo,
Putin has committed his own crimes in Ukraine and his takeover of Crimea should NEVER be acknowledged under international law. Putin regrets the demise of the USSR, one of the most evil polities in history, and has actually said positive things about one of the greatest mass murderers in history, Stalin. I have nothing for Putin. To hell with him. He’s a thug, a clever thug but a thug nonetheless. He’s not a fool like Obama but no accolades should be extended to him even though he may occasionally do something positive.
Jay Boo says
Wellington
I agree that Putin has issues and I was not trying to take sides here one way or the other.
I was however, trying to bring up the reality that the MSM in the US is not to be trusted on Ukraine. The US has a NATO alliance with Muslim Turkey. (bizarre) The US gave the Mujahidin stinger missiles to target Russian jets and heavy weaponry to destroy Russian forward operations bases in Afghanistan in accord with ally Saudi Arabia. Maybe the Russians and Putin have a right to be suspicious of US intentions and interference in Ukraine.
Wellington says
Jay Boo, Russians are suspicious 24/7 about the West. Just because once in a while they have cause to be so doesn’t excuse their putrid xenophobia and paranoia, as Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, a hell of a lot of western Ukrainians and many others would readily testify to.
Putin despises NATO, which is the greatest military alliance in history for the protection and promotion of freedom. This says a great deal in and of itself. It is a damn shame that Turkey is in NATO still but that is due to a relic of the Cold War still persisting and remember that Turkey decades ago could hardly be called an active Islamic state, as it is now. It was Muslim in name only back then. Ataturk and his successors saw to that. Sadly, this is no longer the case.
Westman says
Someone tell me why NATO is so great as Europe is about to succumb to the influence of Islam. It seems completely helpless, tooless, and clueless about what to do with most members not even recognizing the magnitude or the reality of what is coming.

If they mass in numbers on the Saudi border their Arab cousins will have some explaining to do to the UN, Huff Post, BBC and NPR about why Muslims are not welcome.
3 — Merkel in contrast is very mean to warm weather Muslims for inviting them to Germany just as winter is approaching. She must secretly hate Muzzies.

So the economic future and prosperity of Europe’s future has shifted east. Poland, Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia will all reap the economic dividends, safety, and freedom that comes from rejecting moslem colonization. Those EU countries that have NOT, will see exponentially increased suffering of the economic burdens of a massive crushing welfare strain, crippling their economies, continue to see endless rounds of jihad mass murdering terror attacks, and curtailments of basic rights like freedom of speech. And. at some point without any doubt whatsoever, a series of civil wars. All while their countries go into spiraling decline. But, hey — for that they’ll get a pat on the back from the left-fascists and they can hold their heads high and be proud that they weren’t “racist”.

I think the crux of the problem is Turky, being Sunni muslim and a part of NATO, they can crawl up to both sides of this drama, as NATO they can stand for the rights of freedom and peace (and I’m sure their diplomats are doing a good job at that), and as Sunni Muslims they can facilitate the floods of refugees, pushing them out of their economies and into the social benefit systems of Europe … (and I’m sure their diplomats are doing a good job of this as well)

Merkel caused this crisis by her single-handed open invitation, given with no mandate from the people. She broke the law by commanding the overriding of EU rules, and now seeks to let herself off the hook by unconstitutionally inflicting quotas on other states, who were no part of that invitation.

Poland weathered the Cold War for two generations after being abandoned under the Yalta agreements towards the end of WW2. It then spearheaded the breakup of the Soviet Block with the launch of its free trade union movement aided by the moral authority of a Polish Pope and the Gorbachev political thaw. Poland has probably done more to advance political and social freedom in contemporary Europe than any other country. If the hurried acceptance of refugee quotas is a gamble that the Polish political leadership is unwilling to take, then it would be wise for the rest of the Union to take note and give them credit for respecting their own citizens in the face of considerable external pressure to follow the herd.
The French President would have gained considerable stature if he had stayed with the crowd at the stadium instead of accepting personal evacuation in a helicopter. What we have seen is a violent manifestation of traditional Islam unleashed onto the streets of Paris. It is not the fault of ordinary individuals who happen to have been born into the faith; it is however the consequence of many adherents acting upon the exhortations to violence against ‘unbelievers’ that are found throughout the Quoran. Many will be gloating today but tomorrow will not belong to an unfettered fundamentalist Islam that wreaks havoc in every sphere.
