Adding to the to-do list of jihadis in London and New York City. Importing huge numbers of refugees, some of whom are certain to share the Islamic State’s view of non-Muslim antiquities, while reconstructing those same antiquities, is just silly.
“Ancient arch of Palmyra which was destroyed by Isis will be recreated in Trafalgar Square and Times Square using the world’s largest 3D printer,” by James Dunn, Mailonline, December 28, 2015 (thanks to Banafsheh):
The 2,000-year-old arch of an ancient site destroyed by Isis is to be recreated in Trafalgar Square and Times Square as a ‘call to action’ over the militants’ destruction of antiquities.
The famous arch is all that remains of the Temple of Bel in Syria, which was reduced to rubble by Isis militants in August, who murdered its curator and packed the site with explosives.
But the 15-metre arch, which many fear will soon be destroyed, is to be recreated in London and New York, using the world’s largest 3D printer.
The project is funded by the institute of Digital Archaeology (IDA), who say it is a ‘call to action’, to draw attention to what is happening in Syria, Iraq, and now Lybia [sic].
IDA executive director Roger Michel said: ‘We are saying to them if you destroy something, we can rebuild it again. The symbolic value of these sites is enormous, we are restoring dignity to people,’ reports The Times.
He added: ‘We selected the arch as a specific tribute to the last remaining portion of the ancient site. sadly, I don’ think it will be around for very long.’…

Walter Sieruk says
AS for ISIS destroying that ancient arch at Palmyra. That should really. of no surprise to anyone For that is all the ISIS savages can do is to destroy. The jihadists who compose the jihad entity of ISIS can’t make or create or construct anything that is good or of value of worth . All the fiendish and heinous ISIS thugs can do is destroy. They destroy people, they destroy ancient structures and buildings , they modern building, they destroy history, they destroy art, they destroy literature. The hideous villains of ISIS are both extremely murderous and terrible destructive. To such an extent that the callous characters of ISIS are similar in character, to the wicked men described in the Bible. Which reads “Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are their ways, and the way of peace they have not known.” Romans 3:13-17. [K.J.V.]

There is a short story by C.S. Lewis, called ‘The Destructors’, in which a gang of ferile juvenile delinquents in immediate post-WW2 London set about the wanton, deliberately-planned, progressive demolition of a house just because they did not like the owner. Their justification (to themselves) was that ‘destruction is a form of creation’. No doubt that satisfied them because (a) they could not see beyond their own silly, juvenile animosity towards the owner of the house, whom they no doubt envied fro some reason, and (b) they only had the example of mindless destruction around them as a result of Nazi bombing, and in any case (c) they were clearly quite incapable of actually creating anything worthwhile themselves and could only make their mark on the world through destruction. It’s been years since I read the story, and I can’t recall if the police caught up with them in the end. The destructive antics of these brainless muslim vandals brings this story to mind as the two situations seem to parallel each other, except that, whilst the boys in the short story must obviously have been damaged in their formative years by the experiences of seeing their home environment regularly destroyed for no apparently logical reason, one can’t make the same excuse for the muslims. One can only hope that, at the end of the day, some kind of ‘police’ action will bring them to book.

I thought I’d read all C.S. Lewis’s fiction, Jayell, but I’ve never heard of this story. Do you know what collection it comes from ? I went on Amazon, but couldn’t find it.
Jack Diamond says
Because it is a short story by Graham Greene.
jayell says
Was it by Graham Greene? Just shows how you confuse things over 50 years! I studied it at school, and it was included in a little book called ’20th. Century Short Stories’ which I lost track of yonks ago. I’m just going to have a look to see if it’s still available.

Hollow. Meaningless. Lame. The West is in serious trouble.

It might make some people consider what the problem is in Islam.

That will give jihadists another two targets.

When symbolic gestures like this are made in the absence of any real action to stop Islamization, as is the case in America today, they justifiably attract scorn from all who are aware of the existential threat the West is facing and the all-out war that will have to be waged to save it.
But symbolic gestures can also have power. This one will raise the awareness of visitors to New York and London of ISIS and Islamic ideology and that can only be a good thing. To not do it because it would create more targets seems like capitulation.
It does my heart good to think of those arches placed in the centre of two of our greatest cities as a declaration that we, unlike the Muslim savages, value the priceless artifacts of history. Also, if ISIS destroys the original arch, it will be gone forever. There is an argument for proactively making a copy.
Just my thoughts.
NancyM says
If ISIS destroys the arch, it will be gone forever.
A copy does not bring it back.
It will be gone forever.
Have we already decided that the arch will be destroyed?
Maybe we can make holograms of some of the slaughtered people in San Bernadino so that the families will feel ok.
Carolyne says
Excellent point, Nancy. The only way we can save ancient monuments is not by recreating them, but preventing their destruction in the first place. And it does appear that the West has conceded the ancient gate at Palmyra to ISIS. Prevention would make more sense

Wow. What a retard.
Yeah, making a plastic copy approximation of a real antiquity that’s going to be destroyed by moslems on the rampage — yeah, that’s going to teach them a lesson! Not.
Hey. I’ve got an idea: how about an international discussion of WHY they do these things and WHERE they are getting their commands to do so from? HOW ABOUT THAT? Sure, it’s not a nifty plastic replica of anything so that some company can show off its 3D printer, but you might actually ACCOMPLISH something real.
Jack Diamond says
It will be recreated as one of the McDonald’s Golden Arches and become a huge tourist attraction; the burial site of Jonah will also be recreated nearby along with statues from Mosul’s National Museum, and (just in case) the Egyptian pyramids, and the Eiffel Tower (you never know). Also included will be splendid paper mache replicas of the Bamiyan Buddhas, for those with longer memories). Murdered Christians will be recreated in small holograms, because “if you destroy something we will rebuild it again” though what killed them and why will continue to be shrouded in mystery, like the disappearance of the dinosaurs. It will all be capped off by construction of the largest mosques ever in New York and London, towering over the sites, so Muslim allies can demonstrate friendship and that nothing like this has anything to do with Islam, the religion of peace and co-existence. In fact a new addition will be dedicated to Muslim victims of extremism and it will dwarf everything else and Saudi Prince Alwaleed will shower the IDA with millions of dollars as a goodwill gesture, which will be much appreciated.

Well, according to Rasul’allah Obama, it was global warming and a legacy of Western colonialism that killed those Dhimmi people.
Jack Holan says
WHY? There is no historical connection to these other cities. The building blocks aren’t real. There is no relationship to the people indigenous to London or New York. If both cities put that amount of money into a fund with donated time of Archealogists Engineers and other Specialists to reconstruct to the best of their ability the original construction. It wouldn’t be the first time for such an undertaking and a successful one. This would have meaning for the people Who Deserve it. However if Deblazio of New York and probably the next Mayor of London Galloway want to steal cultural assets real or otherwise when they could truly make a difference so be it

If the western’s actual policy is kept for much longer, that arch will be the symbol of our civilization. Nothing will stand…
Yellow Dog says
I think this is a really good idea. Most people don’t know much about Islamic extremism I have discovered. These monuments will be in the faces of everyone and a symbolic gesture of solidarity. Like a Medusa, you cut down one head and two more appear in its place.
