Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Egypt: Highest Islamic authority refuses to denounce the Islamic State as “un-Islamic”

Dec 7, 2015 2:20 pm By Raymond Ibrahim

Sheikh-Ahmed-al-Tayeb

During an open discussion at Cairo University held on December 2, Dr. Ahmed al-Tayeb, the Sheikh and Grand Imam of Al Azhar — and thus Egypt’s foremost authority on all things Islamic — was again asked why Al Azhar refuses to issue a formal statement denouncing the Islamic State of lapsing into a state of kufr, that is, of becoming un-Islamic, “infidel.”

In response, Tayeb said that the only way Al Azhar could do this is if a Muslim formally rejected the fundamental principles of Islam, such as the shahada—that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger—and Islamic scriptures.

He then rhetorically asked what would be the situation (according to Sharia) of a Muslim who accepts the fundamentals of Islam but who also commits great sins, such as drinking alcohol: would they be denounced as “infidels”?

Sheikh Al Azhar responded by saying that it depends on the various views of the Sunni schools of Islamic jurisprudence (primarily the four madhahib).  Some say that such a Muslim (who drinks or commits other sins) becomes an infidel while others are unsure and leave his fate to Allah.

Tayeb then quoted Koran 5:33: “Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.”

However, Tayib concluded by saying, “Al Azhar cannot accuse any [Muslim] of being a kafir [infidel], as long as he believes in Allah and the Last Day—even if he commits every atrocity,” adding: “I cannot denounce ISIS as un-Islamic, but I can say that they cause corruption on earth.  ISIS believes that those [Muslims] who commit the great sins are kafirs and can be killed.  Thus if I denounce them of being un-Islamic, I fall into the same [trap] I am now condemning.”

As critics point out, however, Al Azhar is often quick to denounce as “infidels”—or at least “blasphemers”—those secular Muslims who merely critique portions of the Islamic heritage.  Yet here is the Islamic world’s most prestigious university refusing to denounce ISIS as un-Islamic–even as most Western politicians, at their head U.S. President Obama, insist that ISIS “is not Islamic.”

In short, Tayeb’s comments further bolster the argument in Egypt that Al Azhar sees “liberal” Muslims as more dangerous and un-Islamic than ISIS — which should not be surprising considering that many former students have denounced the Muslim world’s most renowned university for teaching and legitimizing all the atrocities that ISIS commits.

The Shahada divides the world in two. But it covers-over crimes, abomination and atrocities, since the greatest offence in the Almighty’s putative eyes, according to Islamic tenets, is kufr, unbelief.

      A quote (albeit slightly altered):

“Assuming that there is a God, why do so many religious people believe that, the one thing one must do to please God is to believe in Him or Her (before believing more specific doctrines about Him or Her)? What’s so special about belief? Isn’t it just as likely (or even more likely) that God would value and reward kindness, or generosity, or humility, or sincerity? What if God is a scientist who prizes honest inquiry and the pursuit of knowledge as the highest virtues? And indeed, wouldn’t the creator of the universe *have* to be a scientist?”

What are secular muslims going to do, chop off their heads?

(yes, I know that there’s an ideological reason to why they don’t accuse the islamic staters of blasphemy, that reason being that they’re simply living according to normative islam).

Well that imams does, indeed, have a strong point . For ISIS, with all its brutal and deadly actions, is based on the based on the Koran which teaches violence and killing for the advancement of Islam. As seen in ,for example, 9;5, 111. 47:4. Moreover, unlike this imam, many of the apologists for Islam do try to deceive the American public by making the false claim “that ISIS is not Islamic” The real facts show that ISIS is an actual Islamic organization and likewise malicious and murderous jihadist thugs who compose ISIS are real Muslims. Nevertheless, there are some who might, understandably, ask Just how can those ISIS members ,being then so very religious , also be so malice-filled, ruthless and murdering ?” The answer to that question is found in the Bible. For the Bible teaches that there are some people who are so very unfeeling, heartless cruel ,callous and dangerous because they have had “their conscience seared with a hot Iran.” First Timothy 4:2. [K.J.V.] The “hot iron” is this case is Islam.

WS, the answer is that in every community of humans, there are a small number of sociopaths and psychopaths – people who have a propensity to control others, with no inhibitions about committing violence, no moral convictions, no empathy toward others, and no remorse for their actions – just like their psychopathic warlord prophet. Your Biblical quote, “had their conscience seared with a hot Iron”, is simply a metaphor for the fact that such people suffer either from an hereditary defect or environmental brain damage which renders them incapable of normal behavior. And of course in Islamic communities, people are indoctrinated with a toxic mix of religion and brutal politics – which almost certainly results in an increased number of psychopaths. People in this category often become involved in crime, and in Western communities, they likely end up in jail. But in Islamic communities, they often assume leadership roles. So we have a situation where ‘the inmates are running the asylum’ – the very opposite of a civilized society

They couldn’t even call them khāwārij, which is how Muslims usually dismiss ISIS and al Qaeda as deviant from Islam. Not because they wage jihad against the kuffar, not because they impose shari’a, but only because they kill other Muslims or pronounce takfir upon them. But ISIS is not even khāwārij.

Accusation-The Islamic State make takfīr on all the Muslims in Iraq & Sham and make their blood halal.

“This is the explanation of the official spokesman of the Islamic State, Al-Shaykh Al-Mujahid Abu Muhammad Al-Adnānī Al- Shāmī(HA), who said:

“We would like to clarify here a misconception that has always been raised in this campaign, the claim that; ‘the asl (general ruling) of people is kufr’,this is from the bid’ah of the khāwārij of our time & the Islamic State is innocent from this saying. And in its aqeedah and methodology and what it believes in before Allah is that the Ahlu sunnah in Iraq and Al-Sham in general are Muslims, we do not make takfīr on anyone of them unless we confirm his apostasy with Shar’ī evidence of peremptory indication and peremptory proof. And whomever we find from the soldiers of the Islamic State saying this bid’ah, we educate him and explain to him, if he doesn’t refrain, we berate him and if he still doesn’t refrain, we expell him from our ranks & declare disavowal towards him and we have done this several times with the muhājirīn & the Ansār.”

Accusation-The Islamic State make takfīr on major sins & see that you should rebel against an oppressive(Muslim) ruler

“regarding this matter is the same as Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamā’ah which is: That it is impermissible to rebel against an unjust oppressive ruler as long as his oppression does not reach clear kufr. And the evidence is hadith of ‘Ubadah ibn as-Sāmit in Bukhari & Muslim which says:

“… And not to dispute about rule with those in power, except in case of evident infidelity regarding which there is a proof from Allah.”

“The Islamic State follow the opinion of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamā’ah which is in the saying of Al-Hāfidh Ibn Hajar who said: “If the ruler falls into clear kufr, then it is not permissible to obey in his orders, rather it is wājib (obligatory) to wage Jihād upon him for those who are able”

“The rulers of Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt & other countries with Islamic State presence have all fallen into the kufr of ruling by other than Allah’s law, allying with kuffār & others. For example, Bashar Assad has fallen into the kufr of ruling by other than Allah’s law & is a Nusayri which, by ijmā’ (scholarly consensus), are kuffār & the scholars of Ahlus Sunnah further say that the Nusayri’s have fallen into all 10 nullifiers of Islam.

Accusation-The Islamic State kills the people of Islam
“The Islamic State control provinces and wide areas in Iraq & Sham bigger than Britain which has approximately 10 million Muslims living under it. They have not killed them nor have they threatened to do so, rather they give them their due rights & provide them security.

    Al-Adnānī, the official spokesman, said:

“The Islamic State doesn’t make permissible the blood of a muslim, rather we do not target nor kill anyone except the combatant kuffār, and every one of you knows this very well, even though we are accused of this in the western media. If we wanted to target civilians and innocents, then the roads (we are in control of) are full of them and the markets are crowded (with them) but we are the most careful in terms of protecting the Muslim blood. If you support us & help us in our fight against the crusaders with your tongue & limbs we will support you & protect you, however if you stand in the camp of our enemies against us then what are you waiting for from us (other than fighting you)?

Another lie that is thrown at us by the supporters of the tawāghīt, is that the Islamic State fight any kāffir or mushrik rather anyone who goes against it, and they have lied! The fight of the mujāhidīn is a fight of guidance, Allah said after the ayah of the sword:

    “And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah . Then deliver him to his place of safety.” {At-Tawbah 6}

For the Mushrikeen who do not fight against the Muslims, Islam has given them protection and security among the Muslims and Allah has ordered us to grant them protection so that they may hear the words of Allah. Islam wants any heart to be guided because it is the manhaj(methodology) of Mercy & guidance and not the manhaj of enemity & eradication, however we wage jihad with the sword to get rid of oppresive forces which stop the people from hearing the words of Allah and hence stop them from being guided and cause them to ultimately worship other than Allah. So whoever understands this well, would know that the Islamic state fights the combatant kāfir who is opressive and tries to stop the spread of this guidance.”

    Exactly the right point!

‘Islamist extremism’ or ‘Islamic supremacism’ or ‘Islamist violence’ or ‘Islamist intolerance’ are not threats to Islam. No! SECULARISM or FREE THOUGHT or THEOLOGICAL REVISIONISM are threats to Islam.

‘Extremists’ are absolved of any thought crime by Grand Imam al-Tayeb. He thinks ISIS is normative Islam, rather than an aberration! However, the ‘crime’ of ISIS is that they are not ‘convenient’ or ‘politically correct’.

In other words, ISIS is theologically correct…but an embarrassment to other Islamic supremacists…like those at Al Azhar.

Two things -first, the usual taqiyya at play here with this mufti. Muslims can never give it up to fool and confuse infidels!

And second – Al Azhar is not condemning ISIS because what they are doing is in accordance with the teachings of Quran!! So how can they honestly condemn ISIS – the true Muslims!

The English translation of Koran 5:33 used is not precise. It is not about causing corruption “upon earth” but “corruption in the land” ruled by Muslims that is “In the House of Islam” (Dar al-Islam). (See Pickthall, Yusuf Ali, Shakir, Muhammad Sarwar and Mohsin Khan).

In his commentary to the verse the respected scholar Sayyid Mawdudi wrote:

“The word “land” here signifies either the country or territory wherein the responsibility of establishing law and order has been undertaken by an Islamic state. The expression “to wage war against Allah and his Messenger” denotes war against the righteous order established by the Islamic state. According to Islamic jurists the people to whom reference has been made here are organized and armed bands of criminals who commit robbery and indulge in plunder.”

When the Sheikh Al Azhar says “that they (Islamic State) cause corruption on earth” (or rather in the land) he is implicitly saying that the order established by the Islamic State or caliphate is not a righteous one. It is Islamic but not a righteous one. So he is actually saying that the jihadists fighting for the caliphate are nothing but organized and armed bands of criminals who commit robbery and indulge in plunder.

So who are the righteous rulers of the land ruled by Islamic State? Is it the secular government in Damascus or in Bagdad or both?

If not then the caliphate Islamic State must be the righteous rulers of the land they control in the un-Islamic states of Iraq and Syria. And then they are the ones causing corruption in the land ruled by faithful Muslims in the name of Allah by making war against Allah and his Messenger.

The poor Sheikh Al Azhar is unable to give consistent answers to relevant questions because the doctrine of Islam is itself inconsistent.

    • Jack Diamond says

He only refers specifically to ISIS pronouncing takfir on Muslims “ISIS believes that those [Muslims] who commit the great sins are kafirs and can be killed.” Which the Islamic State spokesman I quoted has refuted. This is consistently the problem Muslims say they have with ISIS and al Qaeda, not necessarily the treatment of non-Muslims.

I’d also mention that waging war against Allah and his messenger is broadly defined as any resistance to Islam, including mere disbelief. Listen to Ibn Kathir on 5:33:

“(The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off on the opposite sides, or be exiled from the land.) `Wage war’ mentioned here means, oppose and contradict, and it includes disbelief, blocking roads and spreading fear in the fairways. Mischief in the land refers to various types of evil.” –mischief is a catch-all much like the crime of “anti-Soviet behavior” was under Stalin, a means to charge anyone of almost anything.

Islam’s ‘TOP MUSLIM’ has admitted that ISIS confirms all Sunnite doctrines and that they are not committing any theological errors. They may be sinning by ‘spreading corruption’…but what the HECK does that mean?

ISIS doesn’t even allow cigarette smoking! How ‘corrupt’ are they, anyway? Fighting for Allah’s cause isn’t a sin.

So Tayib is caught trying a mental trick…he makes an accusation of sin on the part of ISIS and then refuses to zero in on it and specify which horrendous sin it. It sounds as he has let them off the hook.

So he ends up reminding ISIS that they are wrong to think sinful Muslims aren’t Muslims. Fix that small problem and ISIS gets full marks for ‘ISLAMICITY’.

Tayib’s critique ends up turning into a vote of confidence.

Islam resembles a successful biological virus, in this case a virus that attacks the brain, convincing it to both attack or murder those without the virus and spread the infection to others by social media. The virus carries a good chance of eventually killing it’s host but it will likely be in a violent suicide that in turn inspires others.

There exists no good treatment for this disease and unfortunately the infected ones will often punish any doubters or those seeking a cure with death, further advancing the extent of infection.

An anti-virus vaccine has not yet been developed and the forces of reason, discourse and morality that are needed to inoculate people against the infection are currently in decline. There is some hope that recent outbreaks in Paris and California may awaken some vital antibodies among the as-yet uninfected, possibly to the point of being able to resist it by paying attention.
