Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Mark Durie: “Anyone saying ‘Islam Is A Religion Of Peace’ needs to read this”

Dec 16, 2015 10:48 pm By Ralph Sidway

“One may well ask how ‘the religion of peace’ became a brand of Islam, for the phrase cannot be found in the Qur’an, nor in the teachings of Muhammad.”

“Anyone Using The Phrase ‘Islam Is A Religion Of Peace’ Needs To Read This”,  by Mark Durie, Independent Journal, December 17, 2015:

Days after the ISIS-inspired terrorist attack in San Bernardino, President Obama’s address to the nation concerning the threat of ISIS missed the mark. In fact, President Obama seemed at times to be more concerned with Americans ostracizing Muslim communities through “suspicion and hate,” than he was with protecting innocent American civilians from murder in the name of radical Islam.

It is high time for western political leaders to stop responding to terrorism by naming Islam as ‘the religion of peace’. It is time to have a hard conversation about Islam.

The West is in the throes of acute cognitive dissonance over Islam, whose brands are at war with each other. On the one hand we are told that Islam is the Religion of Peace. On the other hand we are confronted with an unending sequence of acts of terror committed in the name of the faith.

There is a depressing connection between the two brands: the louder one brand becomes, the more the volume is turned up on the other.

The slogan ‘Religion of Peace’ has been steadily promoted by western leaders in response to terrorism: George Bush Jr and Jacques Chirac after 9/11, Tony Blair after 7/7, David Cameron after drummer Lee Rigby was beheaded and after British tourists were slaughtered in Tunisia, and François Hollande after the Charlie Hebdo killings. After the beheading of 21 Copts on a Libyan beach Barak Obama called upon the world to “continue to lift up the voices of Muslim clerics and scholars who teach the true peaceful nature of Islam.”

One may well ask how ‘the religion of peace’ became a brand of Islam, for the phrase cannot be found in the Qur’an, nor in the teachings of Muhammad.

Islam was first called ‘the religion of peace’ as late as 1930, in the title of a book published in India by Ishtiaq Husain Qureshi. The phrase was slow to take off, but by the 1970s it was appearing more and more frequently in the writings of Muslims for western audiences.

What does “religion of peace” actually mean?

Words for ‘peace’ in European languages imply the absence of war, and freedom from disturbance. It is no coincidence that the German words Friede ‘peace’ and frei ‘free’ sound similar, because they come from the same root.

While there is a link in Arabic between salam, a word often translated ‘peace’, and Islam, the real connection is found in the idea of safety.

The word Islam is based upon a military metaphor. Derived from aslama ‘surrender’ its primary meaning is to make oneself safe (salama) through surrender. In its original meaning, a muslim was someone who surrendered in warfare.

Thus Islam did not stand for the absence of war, but for one of its intended outcomes: surrender leading to the ‘safety’ of captivity. It was Muhammad himself who said to his non-Muslim neighbors aslim taslam ‘surrender (i.e. convert to Islam) and you will be safe’….

Sheikh Ramadan Al-Buti of Syria was one of the most widely respected traditionalist Sunni scholars before he was killed in 2013 by a suicide bomber. The year before he had been listed as number 27 in the ‘The Muslim 500’, an annual inventory of the most influential Muslims in the world. According to Al-Buti, the claim that Islam is a peaceful religion was a ‘falsehood’ imposed upon Muslims by westerners to render Islam weak. He argued in The Jurisprudence of the Prophetic Biography that when non-Muslims fear Islamic jihad, their initial inclination is to accuse the religion of being violent. However they then change tack, and craftily feed to Muslims the idea that Islam is peaceful, in order to make it so. He laments the gullibility of ‘simple-minded Muslims’, who:

“… readily accept this ‘defense’ as valid and begin bringing forth one piece of evidence after another to demonstrate that Islam is, indeed, a peaceable, conciliatory religion which has no reason to interfere in others’ affairs. … The aim … is to erase the notion of jihad from the minds of all Muslims.”

There does seem to be something to Al-Buti’s theory, for it has invariably been after acts of violence done in the name of Islam that western leaders have seen fit to make theological pronouncements about Islam’s peacefulness. Who are they trying to convince?

In the long run this cannot be a fruitful strategy. It invites mockery, such as Palestinian cleric Abu Qatada’s riposte to George Bush’s declaration that ‘Islam is peace’. Abu Qatada asked: ‘Is he some kind of Islamic scholar?’

We do need to have a difficult conversation about Islam. This is only just beginning, and it will take a long time. The process will not be helped by the knee-jerk tendency of western leaders to pop up after every tragedy trying to have the last word on Islam. This strategy has failed, and it is time to go deeper.

Mark Durie: “Anyone saying ‘Islam Is A Religion Of Peace’ needs to read this”
    ……………………………….

Excellent stuff from Mark Durie and Ralph Sidway. One of Durie’s most important works is “The Third Choice: Islam, Dhimmitude and Freedom” on the plight of Infidels under oppressive Muslim rule.

    More:

The West is in the throes of acute cognitive dissonance over Islam, whose brands are at war with each other. On the one hand we are told that Islam is the Religion of Peace. On the other hand we are confronted with an unending sequence of acts of terror committed in the name of the faith.

There is a depressing connection between the two brands: the louder one brand becomes, the more the volume is turned up on the other.
    ……………………………….

It always seems that Islam “protests too much”–we do not hear endlessly that Christianity, or Judaism, or Hinduism, or Buddhism are “religions of peace”. But then, we *don’t have to”.

Only violent Islam needs to trot this out endlessly.

    More:

Islam was first called ‘the religion of peace’ as late as 1930, in the title of a book published in India by Ishtiaq Husain Qureshi. The phrase was slow to take off, but by the 1970s it was appearing more and more frequently in the writings of Muslims for western audiences.
    ……………………………….

Thank you for that–I’d always wondered where this bit of Taqiyya originated. Not surprisingly, it dates from the period where Islam was regrouping after the end of the Caliphate–this was a period of low power for Dar-al-Islam, where Muslims became more interested in stealth Jihad and fooling Infidels into a false sense of security about Islam.

I.H. Qureshi spent much of his career whitewashing Shari’ah and Muslim history–as well as pushing for partition.

Seconding that. I, too, had wondered where the phrase “religion of peace” came from…especially since, in the 1890s, Sir Winston Churchill in “The Story of the Malakand Field Force’, first chapter, ‘the theatre of war’, had described *Christianity* as “the religion of peace’ and Islam as **the religion of blood and war**.

Bush’s line about ‘the religion of peace’ was such a perfectly Orwellian – or Goebbelsian ‘big lie’ – *reversal* of what Churchill had written in the 1890s, that it seemed to me that whoever had advised him and/ or his speech-writer cannot have been unaware of what they were doing.

I’d like to see Durie do a full-scale scholarly article on the *history* of the term – I’d like to see him ‘unpack’ what he says here – “The phrase was slow to take off, but by the 1970s it was appearing more and more frequently in the writings of Muslims for western audiences.”

*Which* Muslim writers, published when and where? What *is* the ‘paper trail’? How *does* this infinitely-deceitful phrase make its way from India, 1930, to ‘the 1970s’ (in English books? in books in other European languages?) to…President Bush making a speech on 9 or 10 September 2001? This is the sort of thing that a research student could really get their teeth into.

(Just like tracing the history, in English, of the word ‘Islamophobia’…finding out who precisely was the *first* to use it in public, in English, when, where, and to whom).

Bush’s speech-writer? Follow the hushed voice trail:
“They all trace back In a dead straight track
To the duping of Bush by CAIR.”

“The extra sincere person-to-person hushed tone of Bush’s words distracts us from a detail that can be seen on the footage: he is following a script. Standing in the mosque with his hosts round him he has a lectern in front bearing a paper from which he is reading. Bush refers to having had a meeting with “these folks”. Presumably the paper was the result of the meeting, a sort of joint production. Who wrote the script? It is an interesting question that may never be answered. There are clues, though.”

Muslims believe that the only way for their to be peace in the world is for everyone to become a Muslim or accept dhimmi status and for everyone to obey barbaric and misogynistic sharia law. I don’t want to have anything to do with that kind of peace.

We need to elect a Republican who will at least have the guts to describe our enemies and who will call for reduction of immigrants from Muslim countiries. Hillary will continue Obama’s policy of trying to appease Muslims by pretending that Islam is a peaceful religion.

Durie is correct, BUT before anything positive occurs, the Western leaders need to abandon their collective cognitive dissonance. But why would they when all of the other world leaders are in lock-step. The name of the game is politics; the overwhelming desire is to stay in power. Truth is a desirable goal, but power normally trumps truth.
Another thing that trumps truth is fear and survival. People will do abhorrent things to survive, even believe a falsehood. This can go on for generations.
Money talks too. Prior to wealthy Saudi Arabia, there were few mosques outside the Muslim world. Now, a billion oil dollars can build a thousand mosques or sponsor 500 chairs at universities or engage public relation consultants. Think what a trillion dollars can do. I fear that it is ongoing right now.
What to do? For starters, we need leaders like Winston Churchill. Unfortunately, I don’t see any on the world stage right now. Leaders of this ilk don’t often emerge in peacetime, but they do in war. Once WW3 starts (or WW4), I pray that a Churchill will come forward for the survival of the free world.

“and it will take a long time.”……..we can’t spend too much to determine what Islam is all about!

Many innocents have died in the hands of these barbaric savages, for no justifiable/reasonable purpose!

The Islam ideology is 1400 years and its concept is very hard to define, because its tenets have been abrogated many times over, its history has shown this. The Islamic concept has been deliberately been founded in a convoluted manner; that no matter what has been written it will only lead, in the minds of its adherents to a final end…… to be the dominant “religion of peace”!

That final status that Muslim’s seek will only be achieved when the infidels (non-believers) convert to Islam or have been killed as the Quran mandates, which profess no compassionated LOVE like the God of the 10 Commandments nurtures to His creations!

    In conclusion:

We need to find what is actually lacking in the Muslim’s hearts, the sole adherent’s of the Islamic religion!

Don’t underestimate the economic power of Muslims to buy influence with their petrodollars. We need more leaders (both in academia and gov.) with principles to resist the corruption money buys. They need to think of the big picture and ponder about the sort of world they want their grandchildren to live in and not just think of their own careers. Going along to get along with Muslims will lead to recognition of sharia style laws.

Leaving this opportunistic-cousin-marriage-information-control-thought-control Death Cult is one of the hardest things anyone can do. But, in Islam “Peace” is what you have after the world is subordinated to Islamic Law (sharia), and the planet is then made the Dar al Islam – the “House of Islam” – and then you have peace. Of course the vehicle to get there is called “jihad” which only means ‘warfare against non-Muslims’ in Islamic Law.

All Muslims, especially the Arabs, are raised to believe that Islam is a religion of Jihad, which is the highest of all kinds of worship. The expression “religion of peace” is a western invention that became popular after 9/11 and the subsequent ‘peaceful’ attacks. Jihad takes you straight to paradise, no matter what sins you committed before.

Jihad(not peace) is in the slogan of the muslim brotherhood. A sword ( not olive branch) features on the flag of Saudi Arabia. If you speak Arabic you know that the “religion of peace” expression sounds odd and is not a commonly used one, even today. Asians were probably confused by the similarity of the words islam and salam (peace). Other than that, Arab Muslims never claimed that Islam is a religion of peace until the west invented it.

    • Touga King says

Jihad is said to mean “struggle”. Internal struggle is the GREATER JIHAD, while the external struggle, in the form of hot wars, terrorism, literature, stealth, civilization, etc., is the LESSER JIHAD. The reason why the internal struggle is the GREATER Jihad is simply because it is very hard for most “normal” people (Muslim or unbeliever) to overcome the personal and natural inhibitions of the fear of death, revulsion at violence against others, bloodshed, rape, etc. Once the GREATER Jihad is won and the natural inhibitions are jettisoned, then the LESSER Jihad becomes “coasting down hill”. It is then easy to understand why ISIS can terrorize and slaughter people in the most gruesome ways without any inhibitions. They are the ones who have “crossed the Rubicon” and won the GREATER Jihad, and indeed are the TRUE MUSLIMS, because they are the most faithful to the Islamic Trilogy and the personal example of Muhammad – the Islamic “Perfect man”. This is the army we need to fear, particularly as more and more young Westerners become converted into their ranks. The rest of the Muslims are indeed the “fake” Muslims and that is why ISIS is also at war with them.

(From TROP) – An Arabic word has only one root. The root word for Islam is “al-Silm,” which means “submission” or “surrender.” There is no disagreement about this among Arabic or Islamic scholars. al-Silm (submission) does not mean the same thing as al-Salaam (peace), otherwise they would be the same word.

Koran 9.29, written at the end of Mohammed’s career, is a principle evidence that Islam is not ‘the religion of peace’.

K.9:29 Fight [q-t-l=fight to the death] those among the people of the Book [Jews and Christians] who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day, do not forbid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden and do not profess the true religion, till they pay the poll-tax out of hand and submissively. (Fakhry)

The two most interesting clauses in this violent verse are (1) People of the Book (Jews and Christians) are to be attacked and killed if they do not profess the true religion: Islam. This leaves the door wide open for terrorists today to attack and fight Christians because they do not believe in Islam; (2) Christians must pay a tax for the “privilege” of living under the “protection” of Islam—submissively and in humiliation.

Islam is the religion of BIGOTRY and SYSTEMIC, SACRALIZED PERSECUTION, one of the most intolerant ideologies in existence.

  18. mortimer says

Islam is the religion of genocide, not ‘peace’.

Jihad is war to establish the supremacy of Islam. Classical Islamic jihad is more or less “genocide” as understood in the UN definition. The canard that “jihad” is “an inner struggle” is reported by only 3% of hadiths. A number of those are considered fabricated since they contradict the Koranic idea of jihad…a struggle for political supremacism.

Jihad has cost some 270 million lives of infidels slain from Island to India and from Central Asia to Central Africa. What stopped jihad in all cases was armies having superior force.
Islam means “submission”…another word for slavery.

The use of head chopping and hand chopping in the context of jihad is consistent with the meaning and purpose of jihad: 1) first remove the “head” (leadership and rational thought), then 2) remove the “hands” the political force and mechanisms of society.

The Muslim armies then move into the power vacuum they created, confiscate all the wealth, rape the women, raise the illegitimate children as Muslims and within a generation the conquered region is Islamized. Move to next region; repeat, repeat.

This is what the modern world calls “genocide”. Jihad goes beyond ‘ethnic cleansing’. As Durie points out, ‘peace’ is achieved after one surrenders all weapons of defense against jihad.

Obama is trying to convince Americans to surrender their weapons, whether handguns and ammo or typewriters, pens and speech and reach out with acceptance to Muslims and never mention their war of supremacism and genocide: ‘JIHAD-warfare against the disbelievers’.

Slowly the demands, complaints, find the hearts of concern and soon the hearts of concern and innocents try to aid, assist, and and just as mortimer describes”,Classical islamic jihad is more or less “genocide”…so we can’t surrender and information is the key.

Western leaders keep saying it is a religion of peace, because they don’t want to face the awful reality that it isn’t. That would also mean facing the fact that they have totally screwed up, made things much worse and haven’t got a clue what to do. This is not something politicians generally want to do. Far easier than doing all that is to take refuge in a tissue of lies, perhaps some empty slogans that you can bleat out in a crisis and, you never know, you might end up believing yourself. After all, a fantasy, however insane, provided it is strongly held, can still provide a degree psychological comfort – at least, for a while, anyway.

Sir Winston Churchill has given you the phrase that you need. In his early book “The Story of the Malakand Field Force”, written in the 1890s (and even earlier than his other book “The River War” in which he discusses Islam, his account of the war against the slave-trading Mahdi of the Sudan) he speaks of Islam as “the religion of blood and war”.

Use *that* phrase – “the religion of blood and war” – unashamedly and openly, at every opportunity. And whenever you can, note that it was *Churchill* who used it. That should at least give people pause.

Hi, thank you! I did see this already in your first reply at the very top. OK, it is a very good sentence actually, not much longer, has weight because these are the words of a prominent statesman and in addition it is the true (but not the whole and horrible truth). Also when the satire/sarcasm is removed from the saying “the religion of peace” that becomes “the religion of war”.

It is surprising how accurate even today is the description that young (only 23 or 24 year old?) Mr. Churchill wrote down some 116 years ago about Mohammedanism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_River_War

        Thank you very much.

I think this is simply the strategy that government/authority always employs to tamp down the feelings getting engendered by violence in the West – we are told ‘do not worry – all will be well’ – if they can’t get the public to relax and just leave it to authority – what is the alternative – armed gangs in the streets? It would be the government’s worst nightmare as so many humans go into war mode and want to start killing the enemy as soon as they get riled up enough – the government knows total civil war is quite possible if the public get angry or scared enough ! Most humans have a trigger-level and they have to keep tabs on things. I don’t blame them, there are sufficient numbers of crazy nuts in the West (with guns) to make the rest of us very wary of giving them anything to get mad about ! What/who they shoot becomes totally out of control in those circumstances ! Don’t you remember the ‘gang leaders’ from school riling up the others with ‘yeah ! yeah !’ calls ? – low-intelligence human nature !
That’s why traditionally in ‘civilized’ lands we only go to war in an organized manner.
So – I take what they are saying completely with a ‘pinch of salt’ – that they say that means nothing, it is all population control.

You can see this tendency happening right now in the Trump campaign where some of his followers see his statements as giving them complete freedom to become crazed haters and they immediately start
pushing & shoving anyone who dares to differ or suggest other ideas – pushing & shoving lead themselves & others into the next stage – and before you can say ‘Jack Robinson’…… if not stopped beforehand. Humans are quite predictable – that’s why ‘hate speech’ is a crime !

I THINK RELIGIONS IN GENERAL LEAD TO WAR AND ISOLATIONISM……PEACE IS NOT PART OF THEIR ACTUAL AGENDA, COMPLIANCE AND SUBMISSON ARE THEIR GOAL.

    Hello All,

a related question about the “Sharia Law”, is that a proper characterization to use in the civilized world?

I have always been using (in my native language) either “sharia rules” , “sharia commandments” or “sharia tyranny”.
