Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

San Bernardino jihadi and friend plotted campus and freeway jihad attacks

Dec 18, 2015 1:54 am By Robert Spencer

If they were plotting this in 2011, why were they able in 2015 to plot and pull off the San Bernardino jihad attack without detection? And if Marquez and Farook were frequenting mosques, are the teachings of those mosques being investigated? If not, why not?

Enrique Marquez1

“Marquez and Farook plotted campus and freeway attacks, prosecutors allege,” by Richard A. Serrano, Paloma Esquivel and Corina Knoll, Los Angeles Times, December 17, 2015:

They were soft-spoken teenagers — next-door neighbors growing up in a suburban tract in Riverside.

But the bond Syed Rizwan Farook and Enrique Marquez formed a decade ago was tight.

They began visiting a local mosque, discussing Islamic radicalism and amassing weapons and explosives. Then, four years before the San Bernardino massacre, they hatched terrifying schemes, according to federal prosecutors.

The duo plotted to launch pipe bombs into the cafeteria of Riverside City College, shooting people as they fled, and to open fire on drivers on the 91 Freeway during rush hour, according to federal charges released Thursday.

The three-count criminal complaint against Marquez provides the most detailed account yet from authorities of the deadliest terror attack on the United States since Sept. 11, 2001.

Marquez, 24, was charged with conspiring with Farook in 2011 and 2012 to commit crimes of terrorism, as well as unlawfully purchasing two assault rifles used in the San Bernardino massacre and defrauding immigration authorities by entering into a sham marriage.

There is no evidence Marquez collaborated with Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, in the Dec. 2 shooting, officials said. A day afterward, Marquez called 911, according to a transcript included in the affidavit.

“What’s wrong? Why do you feel like you want to kill yourself? What’s going on?” the operator asks.

“I don’t know. My neighbor. He did the San Bernardino shooting,” Marquez said. “They can trace all the guns back to me.”

Shortly afterward Marquez was admitted to the emergency room at UCLA-Harbor Medical Center, and referred to the psychiatric ward.

Over a 10-day period, Marquez was interviewed multiple times by investigators, who said he repeatedly waived his right to an attorney.

Marquez appeared in federal court in Riverside on Thursday afternoon, wearing a beige T-shirt and square-rimmed glasses, his hands cuffed in front of him as he sat at the defense table. The judge assigned Marquez a federal public defender and set a bail hearing for Monday.

Known as mild-mannered and impressionable, Marquez was undergoing an unnerving transformation behind the scenes, according to the affidavit.

A few years ago, Marquez began attending prayers at the Islamic Society of Corona-Norco, where attendees viewed him as a “decent guy.” He and Farook would discuss the Tablighi Jamaat, a proselytizing movement that rejects violence.

But his conversations with Farook evolved into exploring extremist ideologies. Farook began providing Marquez with radical Islamic materials, such as Inspire, a magazine published by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit describes a chilling plan the friends devised to attack the college they both had attended: throw pipe bombs into the cafeteria from an elevated position on the second floor, then take aim at those who ran.

Marquez had attended the community college from the fall of 2009 until the winter term of 2011, according to a district spokesman. The affidavit said Farook was registered as a student there from about 2004 to 2010.

“Marquez admitted that the attacks were designed to maximize the number of casualties that could be inflicted,” the affidavit said, adding that Marquez drew a diagram of the planned attack for authorities.

The two also allegedly conspired to throw pipe bombs on a section of the eastbound 91 Freeway that lacked nearby exits. Once vehicles were disabled and traffic was clogged, Farook would gun down those who were trapped, while Marquez took aim at first-responders from an adjacent hillside.

“Farook planned to move among the stopped vehicles, shooting his rifle into them and killing people,” the affidavit said.

In preparation for the attack, the two purchased firearms, ammunition and tactical gear and practiced at local firing ranges.

On Nov. 14, 2011, Marquez spent $750 on a Smith & Wesson M&P-15 sport rifle. Bank records show Farook gave Marquez money for the weapons. Three months later he bought a similarly priced DPMS model A-15 rifle, according to records in the affidavit. There was no record of any transfer of the weapons from Marquez to Farook and Malik.

According to the affidavit, the pair decided that Marquez would make the purchase because they thought Farook’s Middle Eastern appearance would draw more attention. Marquez also purchased smokeless powder for the purpose of building bombs, the affidavit said.

Marquez told investigators he stopped plotting with Farook after 2012 for “a variety of reasons,” including the arrest of three men that November in the Inland Empire on suspicion of plotting to kill Americans in Afghanistan.

But two years later, he married Mariya Chernykh, whose sister is married to Farook’s older brother. The sisters are from Russia and came to the United States on J-1 visas — commonly used for educational and cultural programs. Marquez admitted to investigators that he was paid $200 a month to marry her so she could obtain legal status.

Marquez allegedly told investigators that his wife lived with her boyfriend — the father of her child — in Ontario. Marquez’s family members told investigators that they had no idea Marquez was married until this month….

    Hmm …

But according to Obama: No “specific and credible information about an attack on our homeland”

Obama has ‘no specific and credible information’ about Islam, because he prevents himself and his staff from learning the jihad doctrine, asking about the jihad doctrine or reading Islamic source texts.

All Obama administration opinion about Islam is based on the ‘highjacked religion of peace’ playbook…which is actually just a slogan rather than a fully formed political doctrine.

They dare not say that there is no difference between the Islam codified by Al Azhar University and the Islam of ISIS or Saudi Arabia. All three are Salafist, Sunnite Islam.

In other words, Obama and co. are demanding that we believe (upon their say-so) that there is a ‘good version’ of Islam and that it is ‘out there somewhere’ and that most Muslims are members of the ‘good-version-of-Islam’ mosque…whatever and wherever it is…??

Obama is currently America’s greatest Taqiyya artist! He and his cronies know very well the Islamic doctrines. They are simply playing on the intellectual laziness of the average American, who will swallow what their administration and the liberal press tell them, hook, line and sinker!

Maybe Prez Barack Hussein should pick up a Holy Ko-Ran and read the damned thing. Then he’d see credible information of a threat. True, it would not be a specific threat. To identify those the boys at the DHS and FBI would have to track down people who read the Ko-Ran and are excited by its contents.

The earliest starting point for Farook and Marquez jihad IS 2011. THAT IS FOUR YEARS AGO ! As Robert writes in his post above, why were they not detected in all that time ?

The entire criminal complaint is online in a PDF. If you read it, you will see that even though these 2 guys were not geniuses, the “Eastbound 91 freeway” part of their intended attack was brilliant.

Unfortunately, easy. All you have to do is watch the news and you realize that as long as you do not use electronic communications and limit the “circle of trust” you can pretty much do what you want.

I had a cousin who was a cop in Ireland, Special Branch. He told me that the IRA was extremely disciplined in their communications and who knew what. Very few people knew the whole story and they were very well protected. And they were successful in hiding their operations for the most part. Same thing here.

Stand by for more of the same as San Bernardino.

There are parts of Europe, I would guess, where those engaged in the *resistance* to Islamisation – and I mean by this, those engaged in what *ought* to be perfectly legal and public discussions and analysis of a grave danger to their society (but which are liable to get them arrested and hauled off to court for ‘hate speech!!!” today) and in trying to figure out legal and civil-political ways of mounting a response to that threat, as well as ways of helping one another to survive in their threatened local neighbourhoods – have to bear these same words in mind – ” as long as you do not use electronic communications and limit the “circle of trust” you can pretty much do what you want.”

There is a broader lesson here, too; there is a place for social media, for commenting, for the use of cyberspace…but one must remember it is relentlessly public and ‘general’.

The *real* action is where it always was. Face to face in our own social circles, in the workplace, on campus and in the classroom, in the places of worship we various non-Muslims attend, in our families and friendships, in the social club, the Mothers’ group, the Mens’ Shed, the Parents’ and Citizens’, the veterans’ association or RSL (I speak as an Aussie). In the local chapter of ACT for America or whatever other organisation you have found or helped to found. Right down at ground level. And that’s where it is hardest. It’s one thing to find that a stranger in cyberspace appears to be impervious to reason, with head stuck firmly in the sand. It’s quite another to try to persuade a close relative – someone you like and totally care about – that they need to be worried about the Jihad, and to see them *refuse*, absolutely *refuse* to even consider that there might be a threat.

No direct connections to ISIS or Al Qaeda according to NPR.

There must be something that motivated them, possibly some ideological website or perhaps some religious book that advocates violence.
Yes a book, but what could it possibly be?
    Surely, someone must know.

Or yet again, maybe they were just self-radicalized.

Are we suppose to believe that having plotted with Farook and supplied the assault rifles and bought the powder, Marquesz took no part in the assembly of the pipe bombs? Would be very interesting to know if his fingerprints were found in the interior of the Farook garage, and on the pipe bomb components. Perhaps they were, and that is the reason he has co-operated with the FBI.

These Jihadi attacks take our eye off the real existential threat to the West. Once the Muslim population approaches a near majority, that country will adopt Sharia quite legally. The timeline for such a cataclysmic event for Europe is around 40 years, and probably sooner because of the actions of Merkel. For the US, it is a bit more distant, but the end result is going to be the same.

Our idiot politicians have allowed the Islamic invasion army (all Muslim immigrants are that). a foothold in the West. Unless that foothold is uprooted, I’m afraid the West is finished as a civilisation.

Come to think of it, Time magazine nominated Angela Merkel as “Person of the Year 2015”! This woman who’s hands are red with the blood of Germans and indeed Europeans, present and future, who will be murdered by Jihadists, because of her irresponsibly aiding the Islamic migration Jihad in Europe, is Time “Person of the Year”? What a warped sense of judgment! I hope as Europe goes down, Time magazine and its affiliates, will go down with it!

A bit OT: The idiocy of some Yale students, who’d sign a petition to abolish the 1st amendment to avoid ‘hurt feelings’, is truly breathtaking; makes one wonder how they even got near what used to be a prestigious institute. Apparently intellect no longer matters.

You have to realize where our government officials are coming from. Marx said that the Communists would support any revolution, anywhere, for any reason. Why? Because revolution creates chaos and in that chaos – where the normal order of things breaks down – the Communists can take over. They will be welcomed because they will bring an end to the chaos. Obama and his associates – here and in Europe are Communists. (You can call them Progressives, Liberals, Socialists, Leftists, etc., but they are Communists at their core.) They are bringing all these “refugees” and “immigrants” to the EU and the US for the purpose of causing societal unrest. (This is the same reason that the president an his party constantly fan the flames of racial unrest here in the US – to create chaos, to divide us.) It’s only a matter of time before the smaller EU nations explode in response to the constant pressure the Muslims are creating. Also, the Left in Europe and the US hate Western Civilization’s Christian roots as the one thing that has always stood between them and their immoral world view taking over the West. The Muslims also hate Western Civilization. The West has been their main enemy for 1400 years. They still refer to us as the Crusaders. The Left sees the Muslims as a natural tool to use against their enemies. What they don’t realize is that the “tools” have their own agenda, and there are 1.6 billion of them. The more they perceive that they are winning this struggle, the more of them will be motivated to join. Soon the West – including the Left – will be hopelessly out-manned and we will be destroyed. And the atheistic Lefties will be the first on the block for beheading.

Why’s a Nice Guy Like You Doing a Terrorist Act Like This?
    By: Robert Spencer
    FrontPageMagazine.com | Wednesday, April 18, 2007

Then there’s that mosque…I hope, I do hope that the FBI, CIA and local police have searched it already. Thoroughly. Using dogs.

Final observation – the connection with Tablighi Jamaat. They *might* be represented as “a proselytising movement that rejects violence”. But they are **bad news**. They are a conduit to jihad.

Years ago, right here at jihadwatch, a poster identifying himself as an apostate from Islam shared some insights into the way that Tablighi Jamaat operates to make sure that Muslims toe the line. They are, basically, sharia enforcers. They make an offer you can’t refuse.

I was so struck by the posting that I made a copy and squirrelled it away, for future reference.

    http://www.jihadwatch.org/2009/09/airline-bomb-plot-mosque-has-been-recruiting-ground-for-20-years.html

“As an ex-Muslim, I have had a lot of unpleasant encounters with these Tablighi Jamaat characters.

“They always go around all areas in large all-male groups, especially on Thursdays, canvassing all homes looking to especially target nominal Muslim males.

“They generally look for those without beards as potential recruits

“If a woman answers the door, they rudely turn their backs on her and ask to speak to all the males in the house.

“The males who come to the door are told that their movement is having a very informative talk on Islam at their local mosque and “request” their presence.

“At the mosque, the indoctrination and brainwashing of the average nominal Muslim begins.’

“They are told that their present tolerant practice of Islam is nothing but ignorance. They are then “radicalised” i.e. taught “true” Islam.”

Posted by: Shafee al-Zindig at September 8, 2009 5:29 AM

    Another poster then asked,
    Shafee,
Interesting story. So what happens when these “requests” are not honored?
Posted by: boneshack at September 8, 2009 11:54 AM

    To which ‘shafee’ replied:
“It’s like in the movie “The Godfather”. It’s an offer you dare not pass up.

“Many of my nominal Muslim family members and acquaintances make diplomatic excuses or feign illness or say they will meet them at the mosque later on.

“Thereafter on all future Thursdays they first check before answering the door and if it’s them again they hide and pretend nobody is at home.

“This problem of their intimidatory tactics is especially rife in the Muslim enclaves (Dar al-Islam ) that have been carved out in Western countries.”

Posted by: Shafee al-Zindig at September 9, 2009 12:18 AM

Conclusion: Tablighi Jamaat is *far* from benign and it would be a damn good idea if they were *banned* and all known operatives *removed* from western countries.

Interesting, btw, to see Tablighi Jamaat popping up in connection with this San Bernardino jihad ghazi mass-murder raid…

It’s an offer you dare not pass up.

That’s the whole nut right there: personal, or rather interpersonal, violence. Harking back to the days of the Companions, sure there was the attraction of stolen treasure and sex-slaves as a prize for working in the Cause, but when it comes to proselytizing implied violence is the key lever. And to make that work, there must be occasional actual violence. Also, when one tries to pull out of the Cause, violence is used there, too.

This is why Trey and Matt agreed to the censorship of taking Islam out of South Park episodes. They didn’t care what the suits at Viacom thought, they cared about ending up living their lives out under protective guard. That’s one hell of a motivator.

Imagine if a presidential candidate began speaking the truth about Islam. Yes, I know, that’s far fetched, but imagine. The candidate would privately think about an explosion at a campaign rally in Iowa or New Hampshire killing a couple of dozen attendees. Thus truthful political speech about Islam is ruled out by all the candidates. Similarly, Roger Ailes at Fox RINO would not his news entertainers speak the truth, who wants an explosion at the door or a stabbing in the parking ramp. Best to take the counsel of Bill O’Reilly and Laura Ingraham, and just not say anything to provoke them.

Unfortunately, the less truth said about Islam, the worse the Jihad gets. Either way, people will die, as long as Islam exists and continues its world domination agenda. The options must be rapidly and responsibly weighed, and appropriate action taken by both government and communities. The time is NOW!

This is not a criticism, but people, that’s why most of us here use names like “PrayerWarrior” instead of our real names when making these posts. None of us can afford the kind of security that Robert Spencer and Pam Geller now live with. Its insidious terrorism. And it works.

It must be so exciting to plot a mass murder, especially one in the cause of a noble purpose, working towards a higher end result. In this case that would be global Sharia. If any had doubts about the compelling attraction of ideology in human affairs, Islam is living proof that the power of ideology is without limit. Well, there *are* limits at the individual level, whether it’s being locked up for life or dying.

You are assuming the mosque is not part of the conspiracy! The Marquez and Farouk saga reminds me of Shakespeare: “There is no art to man’s construction in the face.” and the song lyric line: “she looks like an angel; walks like an angel; talks like an angel, but she’s the devil in disguise.”

I wonder how many of these devils incarnate “nice guys” are walking around American cities and neighborhoods, planning terrorism against the country that has given them so much and yet demanded so little as, simple loyalty, and “live and let live”!
