Jihad Watch

Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Trump: “‘Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.’ These are foolish people.”

Dec 7, 2015 11:57 pm By Robert Spencer

Donald Trump shows here that he is a very, very frightening candidate: he would restrict the freedom of speech as part of some attempt to deal with the jihad threat: in other words, he would have us give up our freedom in exchange for security. I don’t believe that we have to cease to be a free republic in order to meet this threat, but Trump is just the sort of shoot-from-the-hip blowhard demagogue who could administer the coup de grace to a system of freedom that is already staggering under body blows given to it for nearly seven years by Barack Obama.

Trump showed in his reaction to our free speech event in Garland, Texas that he didn’t understand the importance of the freedom of speech as a bulwark against tyranny. Many of his supporters, however, charged that my opposition to him on that score was personal, rather than based on principle. This, however, shows that Trump really has no idea why the freedom of speech matters, and would discard it like an unwanted tie.

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Donald Trump — all foes of the freedom of speech. Perilous times.

Donald Trump

“Donald Trump thinks he can call Bill Gates to ‘close up’ the internet,” by Nick Statt, The Verge, December 7, 2015:

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump just said the US should consider “closing up” the internet to curb radical extremism. Trump, a man that routinely claims everyone in charge of the US is stupid, believes that as president he could just call up Bill Gates to help him shut off the internet. Trump floated the idea at a campaign rally at the USS Yorktown in South Carolina tonight as a way to stop ISIS “jihadists” from recruiting Americans to commit acts of domestic terrorism. The idea is so dumb it almost has us, too, at a loss for words.

“We’re losing a lot of people because of the internet,” Trump said. “We have to see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what’s happening. We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that internet up in some ways. Somebody will say, ‘Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.’ These are foolish people.”…

HERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE: TED CRUZ. YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE ALL OF HIS POLICY POSITIONS, BUT PLEASE READ UP ON HIS NATIONAL SECURITY STATEMENTS.

Donald Trump is the creation of Barack Hussein Obama; this nightmare Americans elected.

      1) Trump Calls for ‘Total and Complete Shutdown of Muslims Entering the United States’

      Good.

      2) Donald Trump told the Assoicated press last week: “A lot will have to do with Israel and whether or not Israel wants to make the deal (with Islamic savages) — whether or not Israel’s willing to sacrifice certain things (to Islamic savages),” etc.

How can I trust Donald Trump when it comes to the threat posed by Islam and jihad?

‘After the speech, conservative activist Gary Bauer said that Trump had lost momentum by refusing to give a clear answer on Jerusalem.

“When it started, they were skeptical, and you could feel the room warming to him,” Bauer said. “I think he turned a lot of people. And then he lost them, because he couldn’t just say, ‘Of course, Jerusalem is the capital, we won’t negotiate on that.’ “

I don’t think he does understand the “muslim jihad problem”. Just a few days ago he was suggesting Israel should make concessions to the “Palestinians”. Trump doesn’t understand that Israel is also facing a “muslim jihad problem”

I’m not sure what Trump has in mind, but I bet anything he does would make sense to 99% of the people in the United States.
He should put what ever he has in mind as a bill and have it voted on by the senate and congress. Done deal. That is the American way to do it.

David G said “anything he does would make sense to 99% of the people in the United States”

Not quite. About 38% of Americans in 2014 said the First Amendment goes too far.

Millenials are remarkably uninformed and careless about the Constitutional freedoms. They do not realize the tremendous struggle and sacrifice that went into the creation and defense of American freedoms.

We have a large uninformed population today that believes in a law based on ‘hurt feelings’. To crack down on speech that is simply distasteful to someone (i.e. not threatening) is a swift way for ALL FREEDOMS to be lost.

Those who don’t understand this are extraordinarily naïve and unread. Fortunately, 80% of Americans still agree that freedom of the press is necessary to monitor the government.

Freedom of the internet is essential human freedom throughout the world!

Vast numbers of recent ” American ” imports have no intention of adopting or adapting to the American way of life and much less respecting hard won American freedoms and constitutional rights.

If the internet is closed off to the public and only people like Trump and Gates can use it, how will that keep hordes of terrorists like isis, or lone moslims with their hooded wives from getting together and waging their inner feelings of the need to kill non muslims?

How can people be so foolish? Is the only thing Trump really understands is how to make money?

I’m hard pressed to recall any Presidential candidate ever who says one thing that makes complete sense (e.g., banning Muslim immigration) even though it often goes against the Received Wisdom but then turns around and makes another comment which is absolutely ridiculous (as here). And he does this again and again and again.

The net effect is a negative, surely not a positive, though this does not mean he can’t be elected President, the possibility of which I must say I find troubling yet strangely fascinating. I do believe Trump is shallow in many ways and he is almost certainly an egomaniac and yet he has qualities too, like refusing to back down to all kinds of pressure and not coming across as your standard politician. He certainly is no phony which can’t be said of HC. One thing’s for sure and that is if it’s The Donald v. Hillary it’s going to be prime time every day till the election. And just imagine what the debates will be like between these two narcissists. Oh yeah.

      Yes. I know.

I don’t know, as Barbara Baliff suggests above, whether Trump is talking about finding a way to defeat the “dark net”, or whether he’s being as dumb as presented. But he certainly has shown in the past an unprincipled lack of understanding of freedom of speech, of why people *should* draw Mohammed in today’s circumstances, as well as property rights (his use of eminent domain to get property for his business use). Even if it turns out that his comments, this time, are being taken out of context, he’s already shown himself to be a pragmatist who fails to understand the fundamental principles underlying our liberties and why we mustn’t chip them away for the sake of “security”.

      Dec 8, 2015 at 9:31 am

      Wellington,

I think that the inconsistencies in Trumps pronouncements are a direct result of Trump not preparing his statements in advance. During preparation, speech writers would educate him where there was lack of knowledge, correct misapplied terms, and add enough explanatory information to avoid misunderstandings.

He is too advanced toward being POTUS to use off-the-cuff remarks without the media having a gleeful voodoo doll puncturing. It will cost him the nomination. I wonder how long before the media starts comparing him, unfairly, to Benito Mussolini.

He will likely clarify, with more detail, his approach to internet management in a form more acceptable but it is too late to mollify the damage already done. No one wants a President who would enable the “Football” and then, after the missles are launched, says, “oops!”

I though maybe this time, unlike the Ross Perot letdown, an unbought leader would arise and actually lead the country out of its strictures. Trump’s mouth, without filtering, has doomed his ability to win.

While I appreciate that some of Trump’s comments have focused attention on the Muslim threat, I have never considered him to a good candidate for President of the US. His whole manner reminds me of the expression “never underestimate the power of BS.” And I really mean that. His training consists entirely of having mastered “the art of the deal,” (a good part of which involves self-promotion, which involves BS), and being a entertainment celebrity (ditto). His campaign style reminds me of the way a comedian works. Comedians get up on stage and “find out what’s funny” by saying all kinds of things. They run various things up a flag pole and see who salutes. That’s how they become funny. And that is what Trump is doing. He’s spouting various things to find out which ones resonate with his audience.
He keeps what gets a rise and drops what doesn’t. He says what he says about Muslims only because there happens to be a ground swell of Americans who now realize they’ve been lied to by the media for so long. Then he’ll say something against free speech the next day just to see how that resonates (there’s still a lot Americans who are aware of the Muslim threat, but also believe that it is minor and should be kept minor at any cost by making nice.)

But what really scares me about Trump is that his BS does indeed have great power, and he seems to be completely unaware of just how serious the job of being president really is. I really don’t think that he understand how different the job is from being a dealer and a professional celebrity.

I think you imagine the role of President is somehow more influential than it really is. How often do we see a lame president limping along because both houses refuse to give support. Trump’s great asset is making us all think hard about a given situation. He is awakening the electorate to the new threat. That is the role of politicians rather than being lectured, to accept a serious situation when someone is hell bent on murder but to criticise is to be the labelled the trouble maker. Of course we have to examine all possibilities and reject none if we are to eradicate this radical Muslim threat.

Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller being against Donald Trump today is like Horace Greeley or William Lloyd Garrison being against Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Both Greeley and Garrison thought very ill of Lincoln. Remember the smears about Lincoln: boob, rustic, coarse lout, ignorant.

Life isn’t a casting call. I’m sorry there’s no conservative James Stewart, Henry Fonda, Raymond Massey, or Gregory Peck who perfectly embraces and articulates the ideas of Mr Spencer and Mrs Geller. But we don’t. We have who we have, not whom we wish.

There is also a cultural phenomenon here, in that Mr Trump is a New York City kind of guy as Mrs Geller is a New York City kind of woman. New Yorkers have a certain bold, brash, in-your-face style developed before the Civil War era. They’ve been irritating themselves and their out-state countrymen for years. Nothing new. It’ll work out just fine in the fullness of time.

The problem with Trump is he is shallow on nearly every subject. He seems to lack a depth of understanding of issues. His comments about Israel recently showed less than solid support for that nation. Suggesting peace with the “Palestinians” was possible if Israel was willing to make concessions.
A lack of knowledge is not necessarily a bad thing in a leader if that leader chooses wise advisers to assist. The risk is from the leader who lacks understanding and won’t listen to experts. The mess that is Iraq and Syria is because Obama wouldn’t listen to the generals. Would a President Trump be more receptive to advice, or trust his own suspect instincts?

If you consider the TPP – major new move by the top Industrial Barons to control more than half of the worlds market, there is a bigger picture going on than just the US political scene. Are we witnessing the attempt by that top group to overcome the democratic process in the US and allow the government to further cut legal rights under the yoke of ‘protection’. After all once that has been done and we all think ‘big daddy’ is taking care of us against those nasty ‘other’ people, then they have control of our Internet access, our right to work, travel etc and if the threat is heavy enough we allow martial law ??? This is all very dangerous – Democracy is a big nuisance to those who want power after all ! Trump is the BEST candidate for free speech, by a mile. He is the ONLY candidate for free speech. If you care about free speech and you are not voting for Trump, then you are insane. Completely, and totally insane. This Trump bashing has to stop.

I entered the Mohammed cartoon contest in Texas, even though I have no drawing talent whatsoever, because I understand what is at stake. I have been drawing Mohammed since the threats against South Park.

But we should be campaigning for Trump 24/7. He is the ONLY candidate that stands up against political correctness. What Trump has done for free speech is astronomical. He has made it possible for people to speak openly about things that were previously considered completely beyond the pale. Trump has literally done more for the cause than a thousand Pamela Gellers, and I say that as someone who loves Pamela Geller and what she has done. Trump is a game-changer.

Trump should have entered the cartoon contest instead of bashing it. But by the same token, Pamela Geller should have entered the Presidential race and led all the polls while exposing all the corrupt politicians, dramatically expanding the Overton Window, and calling for a ban on Islamic immigration instead of bashing Trump. But she didn’t.

Yes, Trump is an obnoxious blow-hard, and sometimes he says stupid things, but what politician doesn’t. If he doesn’t win, the United States is doomed to a politically correct hell worse than you can imagine, where any fact that triggers someone will be banned, and Islam reigns supreme.

So wake up and join Trump’s uprising.

    Dec 8, 2015 at 6:39 am

I disagree with Robert’s premise that giving up freedom, to a degree, isn’t necessary in order to enhance security, especially in countries where there is a sizeable Muslim minority.

I’m an Israeli (originally an American), and I think that the way Israel manages to so effectively mitigate Muslim terrorism is by doing just that. You can’t get into a mall, movie theater, or bus/train station without going through a metal detector. That’s irritating as hell, I’m not gonna lie. But it’s what’s necessary in order to deal with the ever-present threat of Muslim terrorism.

You have armed soldiers at many bus stops in cities/dangerous areas of Judea/Samaria, who actively profile and are going to stop and question anyone who looks like he could be an Arab and has a large bag or is acting suspiciously. Heck, last week, when I was coming back from a weekend in Tel Aviv, with two large rucksacks and a baseball cap, two guys from special forces (you can see it by their uniform and insignia) just stopped me on the street and started asking me questions. And you know what? It made me feel way safer, especially since over the last few weeks I’ve missed two terror attacks by a matter of minutes.

Everyone going on about banning Muslim immigration, expulsion of Muslims to Dar al-Islam, et cetera, I don’t necessarily disagree. But at the moment (except for the Syrian refugees), the practical solution for the short-term is, indeed, to limit freedoms (such as freedom of speech, like when Israel arrested Raed Salah, the head of the northern branch of the Islamic Movement, for incitement) and freedom of movement (not allowing Israelis to travel to certain areas while not allowing Arabs to travel/enter others), while utilizing racial profiling in order to target those who seem to be the biggest security risk. Either that, or deal with Muslim terrorism, which is a natural by-product of having Muslims in your country.

Last thing. It’s my first time commenting here, but already I’ve seen quite a bit of scorn towards “Millenials”. I’m a Millenial, and I vehemently disagree with most of the generalizations made about my generation. You have the vocal leftist ideologues, of course, and they’re more prevalent as a result of the Sixtiess radicals’ indoctrination in universities, but they are by no means the majority, and I resent being lumped in with them. Not to mention that referring to all Millenials disparagingly distances them further from the right, lending credence to the meme that the right is for “old white guys”, while the “cool” left is the face of the future. It’s just counterproductive.

Also, apparently Cruz met with trump in New York right around the time Trump made his candidacy announcement in June. This all trends toward the speculation that Trump will eventually withdraw and support Cruz once he feels enough political ordinance has been expended on his part.

I can only hope that’s the case. I trust Trump as far as I trust him breaking his pal relationship with the clinton’s.

Other times he sounds like it is just like all other religions. I heard his dad speak – he does not instill confidence about his grasp of Islam. Trump, more than any other candidate, will take actions to defend our country against Islam.

The situation can never be the same again. Donald Trump has done humanity a great service by boldly calling for a block put on Muslim immigration into America. This at one stroke raises the issue of what is Islam and what are Muslims in a way that has never been done before.

At the very same time the supposed great anti-Jihadist campaigner Robert Spencer has said that he will never vote for Trump even if Trump got down on his knees and begged him.

Thus the isue of Islam and how to fight Islam is also very sharply posed by the Trump call to ban Muslims.

It is not that Spencer is opposed to the call to ban Muslim immigration. He is not opposed to that. It is that he chooses this moment to call Trump a “very dangerous man”.

All of these things are a matter of emphasis and tactics and Spencer has shown that he has no tactics. It also therefore raises the nature of the anti-Jihadism of the Spencer organization.

      He has been exposed totally.

I am raising questions and questions will continue to be raised.

It seems obvious to me that the call by Trump to ban Muslims from coming into America is of such epic proportions that it dwarfs everything else.

Spencer should very definitely be a very big fan of Trump if Spencer really has his heart and soul in the anti-Islam movement.

Of all the candidates vote only for Trump. Cruz also has exposed himself.

In fact there is not one of these republican candidates that Trump could chose as vice President. They are all weak and bad int he face of Islam.

Spencer will never be forgiven. He attacks Trump at such a moment as this. Words do not overcome actions. A savage moment indeed and a turning point.

If we don’t clamp down on Muslim immigration, then reverse it, the US will, in the fullness of time become Islamic. There will be no freedom of speech when that happens. There will also be little hope that freedom in any form will emerge from a nation under Sharia.

Therefore, for the sake of survival, I would not mind that freedom of speech is restricted while Islam is at war with the West.

What happens if someone convinces Trump that all this Jihad business could be stopped if those nasty “Islamophobes” are prevented from “inciting” things? This isn’t much of a stretch, given his truly disgusting comments about Pamela Geller.

No, this is something else entirely. This isn’t about preventing the disclosure of sensitive documents or preventing agents of foreign organisations from manipulating the free press. Robert’s and Pamela’s anger at Trump for his “Garland” comments are causing them to put on tinted lenses that distort the meaning and consequences of what Trump is saying today. They have become unreasonably biased against him because of a year old disagreement.

What I understand Trump to say, and it makes infinite sense and is technoligically feasible, is, along with the myriad of other things we need to do and haven’t done, is identify the areas where radical Muslim chatter, encrypted or not, is taking place and create focused blocking of those accounts. I would think Spencer and Geller agree that blocking chatter that we know is likely to lead to violent Islamic jihad should be done.. Promoting or implementing violent mayhem through communications channels should not be protected speech.

Spencer’s and Geller’s grudge are causing them to sound like extremist libertarians arguing to shut down essential NSA monitoring programs or gagging our intelligence services.

HEY OBAMA FORGOT ABOUT THIS LAW……Islam, by law, is prohibited from US immigration!

The Immigration and Nationality Act passed June 27, 1952 revised the laws relating to immigration, naturalization, and nationality for the United States. That act, which became Public Law 414, established both the law and the intent of Congress regarding the immigration of Aliens to the US and remains in effect today. Among the many issues it covers, one in particular, found in Chapter 2 Section 212, is the prohibition of entry to the US if the Alien belongs to an organization seeking to overthrow the government of the United States by “force, violence, or other unconstitutional means.” This, by its very definition, rules out Islamic immigration to the United States, but this law is being ignored by the White House. Islamic immigration to the US would be prohibited under this law because the Koran, Sharia Law and the Hadith all require complete submission to Islam, which is antithetical to the US government, the Constitution, and to the Republic. All Muslims who attest that the Koran is their life’s guiding principal subscribe to submission to Islam and its form of government. Now the political correct crowd would say that Islamists cannot be prohibited from entering the US because Islam is a religion. Whether it is a religion is immaterial because the law states that Aliens who are affiliated with any “organization” that advocates the overthrow of our government are prohibited.

I think Robert is misreading him on what he intended. It’s a selective and true vetting of entry muslims not an overall shutdown. Is there some personal after all in this especially with the diss?
