Reporter John Hayward asks, “How is it possible that a fully-qualified teacher randomly chose the Islamic statement of faith, instead of countless ‘different, non-religious samples of Arabic calligraphy’ that could have been used, without a clue that students would object? Was this whole affair a political stunt designed to produce the outraged reaction, leading to the ostentatious closing of the entire district over the mere ‘tone’ of protests, without any specific threat whatsoever?”
The outrage from many parents dealt with the secretive, deceptive methods used by the teacher to have students write the shahada, the Muslim declaration of faith. Per another update from Dr. Susan Berry at Breitbart:
Kimberly Herndon said she was “shocked that this was sent home, shocked that this was in the schools [and] shocked that this was right here in our small town,” reports WHSV.com. Herndon added she felt her rights as a parent had been violated…
Herndon, whose son attends Riverheads High School, said the world geography assignment started out as one that focused on “the artistic complexity of calligraphy,” but believes it tried to indoctrinate her son into the Islamic religion.
“There was no trying about it,” she said. “The sheet that she [the teacher] gave out was pure indoctrinate in its origin.” […]
Student Laura Truxell said she was uncomfortable with the assignment as well, even if it was simply to study calligraphy. “Why couldn’t we just learn to write ‘hello,’ ‘goodbye’…you know, normal words, not that.”
Parents convened Tuesday night to discuss the situation. Herndon has not sent her son back to school since the assignment.
“I will not have my children sit under a woman who indoctrinates them with the Islam religion when I am a Christian, and I’m going to stand behind Christ,” Herndon said.
Update on this story.
“Virginia School District Closes After Controversial Assignment Forces Students to Write Muslim Oath,” by John Hayward, Breitbart News, December 18, 2015:
An entire school district in Virginia is closed Friday, after the backlash against an assignment which forced students to write the shahada, the Muslim oath that declares “There is no God but Allah. Mohammed is the messenger of Allah.”
This controversial lesson came from a geography class, whose unit on world religions at Riverheads High near Staunton required students to write the Islamic oath in Arabic calligraphy, without telling them what they were writing. As the Staunton News-Leader describes it:
During a world geography lesson on Friday about world religions, including Islam, teacher Cheryl LaPorte had students complete an assignment that involved practicing calligraphy and writing a Muslim statement of faith, also known as the shahada, which translates as: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” Students were also reportedly shown copies of the Quran.
Recitation of the shahada is a fundamental step in conversion to Islam.
Students were not asked to translate the statement or to recite it. The lesson was found to be in line with Virginia Standards of Learning for the study of monotheistic world religions.
However, when a few students refused to complete the assignment the word got out to the parent community. Parents are “outraged” over LaPorte’s lessons and say they will not have their students complete world geography in her class.
Kimberly Herndon, an Augusta County parent who organized the event, began the discussion and said that by having students write “indoctrination,” LaPorte took away the students’ right of religious freedom.
“That’s why we need to join together,” Herndon said. “If my truth can not be spoken in schools, I don’t want false doctrine spoken in schools. That’s what keeps it even across the board.”
Another report from local NBC News affiliate WVIR quotes one student saying the teacher told them “the paper meant faith, so we didn’t think anything of it,” but parents had a “bad feeling” when they saw the Arabic calligraphy, obtaining a translation later.
“These children were deceived when they were told it was calligraphy, this is not calligraphy, this is a language,” charged parent Kimberly Herndon.
Later in the News Leader article, we learn that the lesson plan also gave students the “opportunity” to “try on a scarf as a part of an interactive lesson about the Islamic concept of modest dress.”
WVIR quotes a student describing how the teacher pushed them into donning the headscarf: “When they asked me to dress up, I said no and the aide said okay, well the teacher pushed and pushed and pushed so I did it, and when she took a picture, I asked for it not to be in the yearbook and she said it was, so that’s when my parents called the school.”
These students deserve high marks for figuring out what was really going on, and jumping one move ahead of their teacher.
The whole thing is incredibly insidious… or else we’re talking about an absurdly unqualified “teacher” running a religious history class without understanding the significance of the shahada, or why non-Muslim students and parents might be upset about being secretly forced to write it down.
Can anyone come up with an example of Muslim students being forced to write Christian phrases in Latin, or Jewish phrases in the Hebrew alphabet, by one of these open-minded teachers? One county resident who worked as a teacher told the News Leader that if she had assigned her English students to copy down Bible passages in an assignment, she would have been fired.
“The students were presented with the statement to demonstrate the complex artistry of the written language used in the Middle East, and were asked to attempt to copy it in order to give the students an idea of the artistic complexity of the calligraphy,” said a press release from Augusta County Superintendent Eric Bond, in defense of the lesson plan, adding that students were not asked to “translate it, recite it, or otherwise adopt or pronounce it as a personal belief.”
The pushback from parents was strong, and there was a national outcry when the story broke, but now the district of 100,000 students has been completely shut down due to what administrators described as an “abundance of caution” about the “tone and content of communications” it has received. The district’s statement reads, in full:
Following parental objections to the World Geography curriculum and ensuing related media coverage, the school division began receiving voluminous phone calls and electronic mail locally and from outside the area. As a result of those communications, the Sheriff’s Office and the school division coordinated to increase police presence at Augusta County schools and to monitor those communications. The communications have significantly increased in volume today and based on concerns regarding the tone and content of those communications, Sheriff Fisher and Dr. Bond mutually decided schools and school offices will be closed on Friday, December 18, 2015.
While there has been no specific threat of harm to students, schools and school offices will be closed Friday, December 18, 2015. All extra-curricular activities are likewise cancelled for tonight, Thursday, December 17, through the weekend. We regret having to take this action, but we are doing so based on the recommendations of law enforcement and the Augusta County School Board out of an abundance of caution.
Finally, the Augusta County School Board and Dr. Bond appreciate parents bringing concerns directly to our attention, and a constructive and respectful dialogue between school and community is always welcome. As we have emphasized, no lesson was designed to promote a religious viewpoint or change any student’s religious belief. Although students will continue to learn about world religions as required by the state Board of Education and the Commonwealth’s Standards of Learning, a different, non-religious sample of Arabic calligraphy will be used in the future.
Again, how is it possible that a fully-qualified teacher randomly chose the Islamic statement of faith, instead of countless “different, non-religious samples of Arabic calligraphy” that could have been used, without a clue that students would object? Was this whole affair a political stunt designed to produce the outraged reaction, leading to the ostentatious closing of the entire district over the mere “tone” of protests, without any specific threat whatsoever?
The entire district was just turned into a “safe space” and sealed off because of “microaggressions.” A bad lesson is still being taught in Augusta County.

EXCELLENT TIMING ! ! ! A reminder not only to parents of K-12 students, but everyone here reading JW: if a spare 30 minutes land in your schedule over the Christmas break, get on the web and check your own school district’s social studies agenda — or whatever words are used in a relevant area of learning.
“Syllabus” and “course content” are two of the most likely search terms that will bring up those learning resources. I check my own county’s master school district content last month and found some borderline-empathetic syllabus illustrations and “facts” about Islam and Muhammad, which I will discuss with the superintendent’s office in January.
Budvarakbar says
Why are you waiting? And why a private ‘discussion’?

Hello Budvarakbar — I will visit the superintendent’s office in January because during the Christmas break no one is working.

IMO This teacher and the school knew exactly what they were doing and what they were doing was to soften up the students for the coming Caliphate. I don’t believe most Americans will ever submit to Islam, as evidenced by some students and their parents in this incident.
I have never heard of Christians storming a school or shopping center or anywhere else murdering and shouting “Jesus is the greatest.” But since the Koran mandates that Muslims kill infidels, we can expect more attacks by Islamists, which will be called “Workplace violence” by Obama’s government.
David says
The Christian Bible teaches us to forgive your enemies and to turn the other cheek. I will NEVER SUBMIT TO ISLAM. They will have to kill or behead me. I couldn’t spread the blood because I believe in God’s teachings. I don’t worry about death because I believe in my Lord and Savior.

How is it the “instructor” did not check to see if that calligraphy was on the ISIS FLAG? This is a stark example of how poorly educated liberals are about Islam and ISIS. Methinks some Muslim provided the calligraphy and hijabs to be used as a little stealth Da’wa while the instructor’s brain was humming Kubaya.
“If it feels good it must be so” should be the liberal motto when their attention is diverted from the media’s “celebrity circus” long enough to recite it.

I believe the school district said the lesson had been taught before. And there were no objections.
The whole thing looks a bit sneaky – the Muslim headscarf, the Koran and the Islamic statement of faith – all under ‘world history’!!
Who is behind creating these Islamic lesson plans – which slips in religious studies under ‘world history’ – and keep popping up?
Have these lesson plans been sponsored by a Middle East group or country? No doubt from a place where religious freedom is not even tolerated.

Next school board election, the voters simply need to clean house. Elect an entirely new board, then fire the school district superintendent and the administrators. The tenured teachers present a different problem but they can be held to higher standards and monitored more closely. The shut down of the school for the day and the weekend was a snarky little reminder to the parents that the school board runs the show, controls the children and that the board is not accountable to the parents or taxpayers. Time for the voters to demonstrate otherwise. Apparently local law enforcement recommended this shut down. When election time comes, elect a new sheriff or police chief, whoever was responsible for supporting the school board in this mendacious stunt.
Peter Brock says
Here’s a credible response, not an hysterical reaction.
Anyone can file a FOIA to obtain the the criteria for violations of federal and state law by this teacher and Bond.
School boards are only a step by aspiring political candidates seeking higher office. All federal entitlement programs, especially those promoted by CAIR, should be investigated for racist and terrorism content.
This school board should resign or be recalled. Do your diligence parents!
Ian H says
Shutting down the schools deprives students of education. That is a very serious thing to do and if they don’t have a very serious reason for doing it I would think parents could take the school board to court for it.
In some places education is regarded as a human right and you could argue therefore that the human rights of the students have been harmed by this action. But whether education is classified as a human right, or whether there is merely a contractual obligation on the school board to supply education to students, surely shutting down the schools for no good reason is actionable in some sense. Perhaps a class action on behalf of the parents seeking compensation for the cost of however many days worth of private tuition to make up for the shut down might have some chance of success.

Good on the parents for pushing back. Teachers like LaPorte feel whenever muslims get bad press, (such as those annoying terror attacks), it is her duty to help explain their religion. LaPorte and others like her believe the best way to achieve world peace is for non muslims to adopt muslim ways. In word submission.

I have rather mixed feelings about this one; especially when I studied languages of non-Western cultures.. When I studied Classical Chinese, I copied out some texts from Daoist and Buddhist writers, even though I’m by no means either a Buddhist or a Daoist. I learned to use “Chat naa” (in the next life) when speaking Thai, even though I don’t share the Buddhist beliefs behind it. Were I to become a student of Arabic, I’d probably have to know something of Qur’anic and other Islamic texts. You have to get at least some cultural context when you study another language.
Marco Elliott says
Kepha,
1. These students are not studying Arabic as a foreign language. Nor are they living in a society where Islamic religio-cultural expressions are part of the common vocab. As you undoubtedly know the Thai national anthem has references to Buddha. Catholic Thais have no problem singing the anthem because it is a part of their cultural experience in a way that minority Islam is not part of Western culture. Adults can voluntarily adopt the language of another group when necessary without subscribing to the underlying beliefs.
These were not adults. They were children and were being directed to write the Islamic profession of Faith by their teacher. I am sure there are Islamic scholars who would argue that these students are now Muslim, like it or not.
2. As has been pointed out there are plenty of examples of non-Islamic calligraphy that could have been used. If, however, it was necessary to use that particular text equal time should have been given to Christian Arabic calligraphy….and there is plenty of that.
3. If this fiasco involved just a lesson in calligraphy as an art form why were these students not given a piece that is culturally and historically appropriate for them….any thing from the vast corpus of west European calligraphy that spans some two thousand years, not to mention the so-called Middle Ages.
4. If it was all so innocent, why indulge in hijab wearing. All very odd.

Virginia School District closes, blaming ‘tone and content’ of parents’ protest over Islamic indoctrination assignment
………………………..
Firstly, kudos to the brave and principled parents for taking a stand.
But shutting down the entire school district? What madness is this? I have never heard of such a thing, save for temporary cancellation following a major natural disaster like an earthquake or hurricane.
This insanity sounds *punitive*–that if parents dare complain about their children being indoctrinated into Islam, that they won’t receive an education at all.
I can’t even see how this is legal. We’ll have to see hows this plays out.
And remember that there are other school districts around the country doing similar things.
Ashley says
Graven,
I agree. How refreshing to hear that the parents cried foul on this “calligraphy” assignment.
I, too, don’t understand the action taken to close the entire school district. I can only surmise that the ”
tone and content” expressed by one or more of the outraged parents may have been threatening in nature. Los Angeles took similar measures just a few days prior.
I strongly believe this “teacher” should have been removed from her position. I’m sure that was the demand of the parents. At the very least, put her on administrative leave until the matter is thoroughly investigated. Best to remove the one bad apple than mow down the entire orchard by closing down the school district.
Yes, indeed. This is a story worth following…

As a teacher in the public school system, I can attest that many of us have serious qualms about the way in which Islam in its political, social, and religious framework is taught, as well as what is ignored and whitewashed in the presentation.
A truly disproportionate percentage of the 6th grade, junior high, and high school social science sector is spent on Islam. Nothing negative is said about Islam, but plenty of negative things are presented about Western history and culture. The beauty of Western civilization, its art, spirituality, and humanism are shunted off into the back chapters where there is often little time to even cover it.
Even in the lower grades, where state and U.S. history are covered, an emphasis is often laid upon our nation’s and state’s past injustices against its native people, and on the slavery suffered by African Americans. These should indeed be taught, but should we also not teach that it was we ourselves who put an end to these injustices, started by the colonial process?
I am not exaggerating when I state that it’s as if the powers-that-be are attempting to brainwash our students into hating the very system that produced them.
Green Infidel says
Is there any form of organising among the teachers, protests etc?
Also, is anything taught about Islam and its history which could allow mention of some of its “juicier” aspects? Eg when discussing the life of Muhammad, could a teacher not mention all the wives of Muhammad, and emphasise his “favourite bride” Aisha, who was 6 when he was fifty-something? And could the way he dealt with the Jews of Khaybar and the Banu Qurayza not also be mentioned in some way? All while highlighting the greatness and peacefulness of all things Islamic, of course…
Kepha says
Mike, glad to meet you. I teach history and government to English Language Learners in a High School. I often feel that I’m not a teacher at all, but a professional swindler of the young. Yes. My mother told me that immediately after the British-financed (the British armed the islamic north against the christian south east) Nigeria\Biafra war (1970), the victorious Nigerian govt introduced islamic studies almost in all schools in the south east (where islam is unacceptable). What did the parents do? They withdrew all their kids from school until islamic religios studies (irs) was removed from the school curriculum.

About the same question I’ve asked the publishers and many, many Muslims in the last four years after finding an article on jihad in my Summarized Sahih Al Bukhari.
Excerpt from my “Questions for Muslims” letter regarding Jihad in the Qur’an and Sunnah by Sheikh Abdullâh bin Muhammad bin Humaid :
Question for Muslims:
Explain this articles prominence, and significance almost as an
“Introduction”, in a book, my Summarized Sahih Al-Bukhari, and tell me….
….WHY, out of all the articles, out of all the words of pearly Muslim poetry and wisdom the publishers could have put in this, “the most authentic and true among the books of the Prophet”, this article on JIHAD is the one they chose?
Also
If Islam is the “religion of peace”, where in Sheikh Abdullah bin Humaid’s article on jihad can I find the equivalent of “Love Thy Neighbor” and “good will toward men”?
Compare Humaid’s “jihad” and Emmet Fox’ Sermon on the Mount and tell me which one best represents a spirit of Love and “compassion”
KA says
What does a type of artistic penmanship have to do with geography?
Jon says
My skepticism precisely! Why would anyone just randomly choose something as iconic as the shahada for a calligraphy exercise? It’s clear to me that the idea is to be able to claim that the class have become Muslim just by writing/repeating the shahada, the option given to non-Muslims about to be executed for apostasy or heresy. The fundamentalist interpretation of the Koran is that we’re all Muslims by default and just need to be brought back into the fold. Reciting the shahada completes the conversion and cancels out the transgressions of the past. Quite a catch converting an entire class of unsuspecting kids.
Kepha says
(and KA)–Actually, I’ve found that showing a few cultural artifacts for when I have to teach about China is very useful and stimulates student interest. If I had this in my curriculum, I’d tell them what it is and what it means in the culture that produced it, not that the students have to accept or believe it if they copy it. Still, when questions about Islam and belief arise, I will always plainly tell the kids that I am a Christian, and that they are allowed to question the narrative, too.
KA says
My point is geography is the study of land mass, topography. Culture is a social study subject. If definitions mean nothing it’s no wonder kids are so darn confused these days. Penmanship is not geography no matter how you slice it.

My thoughts exactly. If we look beyond the counterjihadi blogosphere and into the MSM, this is being presented as another example of Islam/Muslims being victimised by “ignorant bigots”. Eg here…

Note that the BBC doesn’t mention anything about that writing amounting to the Shahada – or converting to Islam – but mentions “the messages – described as profane and hateful…”. Yes, according to the BBC, every single message to the school against this assignment was profane and hateful. Presumably, that includes the likes of us here as well.
So yes, I suspect this whole incident is being used to build up the “evidence” that America is a profane and hateful place, which presumably then needs to be made less “hateful” – just like Mr Clock boy’s little moment of fame.
