A hadith depicts Muhammad saying: “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him” (Bukhari 9.84.57). The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law according to all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence.
This is still the position of all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence, both Sunni and Shi’ite. Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the most renowned and prominent Muslim cleric in the world, has stated: “The Muslim jurists are unanimous that apostates must be punished, yet they differ as to determining the kind of punishment to be inflicted upon them. The majority of them, including the four main schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi`i, and Hanbali) as well as the other four schools of jurisprudence (the four Shiite schools of Az-Zaidiyyah, Al-Ithna-`ashriyyah, Al-Ja`fariyyah, and Az-Zaheriyyah) agree that apostates must be executed.”
Qaradawi also once famously said: “If they had gotten rid of the apostasy punishment, Islam wouldn’t exist today.”
“ISIS beheads Syrian teenager on charges of ‘apostasy,’” by Jan Nasro, ARA News, January 31, 2016 (thanks to The Religion of Peace):
URFA – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) beheaded on Saturday a Syrian teenager in the northern city of Jarablus after accusing him of apostasy.
The 14-year-old boy was arrested by ISIS militants for missing Friday prayers at the central mosque of Jarablus, where pro-ISIS preachers usually deliver speeches promoting the group’s alleged Caliphate.
Speaking to ARA News in Jarablus, civil rights activist Nasser Taljbini reported that the ISIS-led Sharia Court order the militants to behead the boy in public.
“Dozens of people attended the brutal execution, including the victim’s parents who were forced to witness the beheading of their own son,” Taljbini said.
“ISIS is trying to prove that it is still powerful despite all the military defeats. The group is trying to terrorize people through conducting such public punishments,” the source told ARA News.
Local sources in Jarablus said that ISIS sees in the teenagers as future jihadis who should receive a proper Sharia education in order to stay committed to the message of the so-called Caliphate.
What? But CAIR told me Sharia was entirely benign!

Huh, no, they’re just enforcing islamic orthodoxy and the rule of islamic law. True, I bet that muslims live in fear for their lives because in such totalitarian ideologies the accusation is often the evidence, but let’s not pretend that’s why the islamic state kills apostates – they do it because muhammad did it.

The Koran does not come out and state explicitly that apostates should be killed. However, there are a number of Quranic verses that pertain to apostasy and various Muslim scholars have found in them the justification to execute apostates. The prescription of death for apostasy comes from the hadiths which sometimes have the effect of overruling what the Koran says…though most Muslims will deny it…because they do not know Islam very well.
The Pakistani Maulana Mawdudi wrote: “To everyone acquainted with Islamic law it is no secret that according to Islam the punishment for a Muslim who turns to kufr (infidelity, blasphemy) is execution…The whole of our religious literature clearly testifies that ambiguity about the matter of the apostate’s execution never existed among Muslims…All (the references I cited) will assure you that from the time of the Prophet to the present day one injunction only has been continuously and uninterruptedly operative and that NO ROOM WHATEVER REMAINS to suggest that perhaps the punishment of the apostate is not execution.”
Richard says
“The Koran does not come out and state explicitly that apostates should be killed.”
Not true, it explicitly does. 4.89 “They wish that you reject Faith, as they have rejected (Faith), AND THUS THAT YOU ALL BECOME EQUAL (like one another). So take not Auliya’ (protectors or friends) from them, till they emigrate in the Way of Allah (to Muhammad SAW). BUT IF THEY TURN BACK (FROM ISLAM), TAKE (HOLD) OF THEM AND KILL THEM WHEREVER YOU FIND THEM, and take neither Auliya’ (protectors or friends) nor helpers from them.(Hilali & Khan)
Other verses that support killing of apostates 9.11-12, 2:217, 9:73-74, 88:21, 5:54, 9:66.
Kenneth Olson says
You need to read this stuff. It is simple and in it’s simplicity, all Islam hangs on for centuries and is the fastest growing “religion” Go Figure

There is also the episode in Qur’an 9:107 amplified upon in the ahadith, where Muhammad has a mosque he considers apostate attacked and burned down. With the assembled still inside, though they flee the burning building and escape (intended) death. Muhammad, forever the perfect example of conduct for emulation.
9:107. And as for those who put up a Masjid (mosque) by way of harm and disbelief and to disunite the believers and as an outpost for those who warred against Allah and His Messenger aforetime, they will indeed swear that their intention is nothing but good. Allah bears witness that they are certainly liars.)
9:110. The building which they built will never cease to be a cause of hypocrisy and doubt in their hearts unless their hearts are cut to pieces. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.)
The story is related in Tabari with Muhammad’s orders “Go to this mosque whose owners are unjust people and destroy and burn it.” (Tabari, vol.ix, p.61). When Sunnis destroy Shia mosques (or any considered “apostate”) and murder those inside, they are following the example of their leader. Just as the best of Muslims, the companions of Muhammad who succeeded him, made their first war a war on apostasy, Ridda, to bring back by force those who had decided to leave Islam en masse when Muhammad died. Or leave them as corpses.
“Umdat al-Salik, the Shari’a manual endorsed by Al-Azhar, makes clear both the punishment called for (though the apostate can be offered a chance to repent) and how wide-open is apostasy defined in Islamic law.
Ridda: “leaving Islam is the ugliest form of unbelief (kufr) and the worst. It may come about through sarcasm….” 08.1 “when a person who has reached puberty and is sane voluntarily apostasizes from Islam, he deserves to be killed.”
08.4 “there is no indemnity for killing an apostate (O: or any expiation since it is killing someone who deserves to die.”
08.7 Acts that entail leaving Islam–
1) to prostate oneself to an idol, whether sarcastically, out of mere contrariness, or in actual conviction. 2) to INTEND to commit unbelief, even if in the future. 3) to speak words which imply unbelief such as ‘Allah is the Third of Three’ or “I am Allah’ (unless one is intoxicated spiritually or insane). 4) to revile Allah or His Messenger 6) to be sarcastic about Allah’s name, His command, His interdiction, His promise or His threat. 7) to deny any verse of the Koran or anything which by scholarly consensus belongs to it or to add a verse that does not belong to it.
Islam has always been a license to kill and has always been, contrary to rumor, about compulsion.

The Islamic armies did in the end keep the Mongols at bay which takes some doing as few armies matched the Mongols when it came to utter ruthlessness and ferocity. It always amazes me that the Mongols, little guys on little horses were able to sweep through from Mongolia conquering all before them. Many cities just surrendered out of fear without fighting and hoped the Mongol leaders were in a good mood and let them live.Sometimes they did and some times they didn’t.If they resisted and lost all would be massacred men ,women and children!!
Totally ruthlessness seems to be the key to military success as the Romans Germans and Mongols showed. One thing that trumps that is intelligence and high technology which we have in the West.Hitler was defeated by computer/Maths geeks like Alan Turing decoding his “impregnable,” codes

Would the minutes of our meeting then be free speech protected by the US Constitution?
I assert that the minutes would therefore NOT be protected, because what they are in fact is a Conspiracy to Murder, which is a very serious felony.
Have you read the Quran?
How would any number of Muslims meeting in a mosque, or anywhere else, reciting the Quran be any different than my example?
Islam is a criminal enterprise, with Sedition and Conspiracy to Murder right at the top of the list; a list including scores of other crimes. It’s time for an honest and long overdue reclassification of Islam from “The Religion of Peace,” to Capital Felony. Then impose capital punishment on those “practicing or promoting” Islam. This is not thought control. We all have criminal thoughts at times, but when those criminal thoughts leave our lips or are acted upon, then they are no longer just thoughts, and they become everyone’s concern.
We’re not required to consider Islam a religion or tolerate it simply because a 7th Century psychopath said so.

And in the 57 Islamic countries, a Muslim would justifiably fear the consequences of apostasy.
But how does that explain all the Muslims in Western countries, living under the protection of our Western governments? They have nothing to fear with apostasy, other than perhaps some ostracism from their Muslim family and friends.
And how does that explain all those souls in Western countries who actually convert to Islam?
I contend that most Muslims truly buy into Islam. Just look at the hijrah as an example. Why don’t all those Muslims ditch Islam the moment they set foot in the EU or America?
quotha raven says
To Daniel Triplett, who asks:
“But how does that explain all the Muslims in Western countries, living under the protection of our Western governments? They have nothing to fear with apostasy, other than perhaps some ostracism from their Muslim family and friends”
The quote does not attempt to explain all Muslim behavior; it just posits that apostates run a risk of a death sentence, and that this is critical and central to the survival of Islam. As for “nothing to fear:if they are under Western governmental protection, well, maybe, to some extent. But I don’t think Salmon Rushdie in England has been enjoying a stress-free life since the fatwa was declared against him some forty years ago..
“And how does that explain all those souls in Western countries who actually convert to Islam?”
It doesn’t. But go to any prison to find a partial but significant answer. Most Muslim converts are crafted while they are incarcerated. As to the rest of converts, they are seduced by promises of power and rewards, acceptance and respect they will experience once they submit to Allah, and especially if they undertake jihad, which appeals to their sense of themselves as masculine and powerful, and to their possible predilection to violence and dissembling…The quote by Qaradawi does not address this.
“Why don’t all those Muslims ditch Islam the moment they set foot in the EU or America?”
That would make them apostates, like it or not, and the threat of punishment is hanging over their submissive heads, so why bring attention to themselves by abandoning Islam? Also, Muslims would naturally cleave to the life and fellowship they have known in their mosques for their whole lives before emigrating. It might also be suggested that they think they can have their cake and eat it, too. In reality, is this not what they are able to enjoy in the permissive, indulgent, multi-cultural-embracing West?
BTW, much as I like that quote and find it compelling, it didn’t make the slightest impression yesterday when I said it to a 30-something, self-assured young woman who insisted that one must respect Islam the same way one is obligated to respect all other religions…Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc, etc. She is articulate, totally leftist-driven, and whatever I said went in one ear and right out the other. The quote didn’t make the slightest impact! Not the slightest dent! Helas!
She was a pristine and unassailable example of “ethical narcissism”. (Miss you, Voeg!)!

Clerics tell Muslims to protect minorities
More than 250 Muslim scholars, from over 120 countries, have called for religious freedom for non-Muslims in majority-Muslim countries.
In a declaration signed on 27 January in Marrakesh, Morocco, the clerics said that it is wrong to discriminate against religious minorities in Muslim countries.
They paid particular attention to Muhammad’s Charter of Medina when drafting the declaration, which gives instructions for governing a religiously pluralistic state, and was issued shortly after Muhammad arrived in Medina.
In particular, the declaration references the charter’s “principles of constitutional contractual citizenship” and “freedom of movement, property ownership, mutual solidarity and defense, as well as principles of justice and equality before the law”, in regards to Muslims and non-Muslims.
“The objectives of the Charter of Medina provide a suitable framework for national constitutions in countries with Muslim majorities, and the United Nations Charter and related documents, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are in harmony with the Charter of Medina, including consideration for public order,” states the Marrakesh Declaration.
The declaration challenges a broad network of Muslims—including educational institutions, politicians, and artists—to fight extremism.
“[We] call upon the various religious groups bound by the same national fabric to address their mutual state of selective amnesia that blocks memories of centuries of joint and shared living on the same land,” it states. “We call upon them to rebuild the past by reviving this tradition of conviviality, and restoring our shared trust that has been eroded by extremists using acts of terror and aggression.”
The gathering was chaired by the United Arab Emirates Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies and sponsored by the government of Morocco.
For decades now, Morocco has been trying to counter Islamic extremism by training foreign scholars in order to disseminate a model of Islam based on tolerance, moderation and intercultural dialogue. Hundreds of clerics from Africa, as well as a few from European countries, including France and Belgium, have already been trained.
In July 2015, it launched the Mohammed VI Foundation for African Ulama, aimed at to unifying the efforts of Muslim scholars across the continent.

It all means essentially nothing, LR. Rather like some Nazi businessmen and teachers in the 1930s averring that all that hatred in Mein Kampf should just be ignored and Adolf is really good, noble and means no real harm to the Jews or to anyone who disagrees with him.
Here it is in a nutshell: The term “Islamic extremism” is redundant. Might as well speak of “Nazi extremism” or “Marxist extremism.”
Be wary of the error of engaging in trying to save something that shouldn’t be saved. Islam, none of it, should be saved. It should only be discarded. There is nothing good in Islam which can’t be found elsewhere, but there is much wrong in Islam that is difficult to find anywhere else. So, what’s the damn point in trying to salvage Islam at all?
Your turn.

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2016/01/female-al-azhar-prof-allah-allows-muslims-to-rape-non-muslim-women#comment-1361483
I will assume he is acting in good faith here unless I specifically learn otherwise.
But you can see how the author of the article from Christianity Today jumps through hoops trying to excuse Muslim violence, saying this at one point:
“Muslims throughout the world are becoming more Islamic out of fear that extremists may take over their areas and that [ISIS] sleeper cells may wake.”
No indication that Muslims are becoming more Islamic because they *agree with* pious Islamic groups such as ISIS.
And you can see the main purpose of the “Morocco Declaration” is concern over Islam “looking bad”, as well as to protect Muslim states like Morocco:
“WHEREAS, this situation has also weakened the authority of legitimate governments and enabled criminal groups to issue edicts attributed to Islam, but which, in fact, alarmingly distort its fundamental principles and goals in ways that have seriously harmed the population…”
The Washington Post in large part swallows this bs as well.
Grimly hilariously, this conference featured scholars from Saudi Arabia, which does not allow churches, Bibles, or crosses; Mauritania, where 17% of the population *is enslaved*; Muftis from Iran, where Christians are imprisoned and sometimes killed for affirming their faith; and judges from Pakistan, where violence against Infidels is almost *never* prosecuted.
Even in “moderate” Morocco, apostates from Islam live in fear of prosecution from the government, and Infidels cannot inherit from Muslims.
And yet, all these meretricious Muslims are making it sound as though the only problem is with ISIS.
And then an Imam based here in the US rants about “Islamophobia”: “The threat is serious all over the world..we have to stop it and we also have to take pre-emptive measures”.
In other words, prevent Infidels from openly talking about the violence of Islam.
The Washington Post does put in a couple of dissenting voices–but not until the very end of the article.
LR says
To Wellington,

LR, while this is interesting, it is also very dismaying. It seems we cannot make any progress with Islamists unless we first agree to elevate Mohammad, in this case to the status of a progressive, democracy-loving social justice hero. This might appeal to some people’s sense of ‘being nice’ (like, let’s give a Nobel Peace Prize to Yasser Arafat, it’s the nice and encouraging thing to do.) But peace and love don’t seem to be Mohammad’s MO, he just has too much blood on his hands for that to be believable. For example, re, the Charter of Medina; did he write that before or after he chopped off the heads of 800 Jews? As far as I know, he was new in town at the time, so who was he to write a Charter calling out the rules? My guess is that he had more or less conquered Medina shortly after his hurried arrival from Mecca, making the Charter more of a document of the victor. (I’m interpreting this with my somewhat limited knowledge here, I readily admit.) One Wikipedia source says he was asked to come to Medina as a Great Arbitrator between warring factions, while most sources say he fled to Media to avoid assassination. My point here is that there is a growing mass of legendary material that is framing Mohammad in ways that simply don’t match his traditional bios, and that exploit contemporary, emotional buzz words such as ‘democracy’, ‘religious rights’, and ‘social justice’.
I suspect there are many well-meaning people involved in this project who would like to see their beloved Islam reformed, but who cannot bear any image damage to it’s founder. The perfect solution is to idealize Mohammad in kinder and gentler, even fictional terms. But if it is a lie, or fiction, or grotesque exaggeration of the real man, then this strategy will backfire in ways we can’t predict.
