Jihad Watch

Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

FBI unable to crack San Bernardino killers’ cell phone

Feb 9, 2016 10:14 pm By Robert Spencer

These are the people who are protecting us from jihad terror attacks. This shows that at least some jihad terrorists have access to encryption technology that the FBI doesn’t have — combine that with the Obama Administration’s prohibition on examination of the guiding ideology of jihad terror, and trouble is on the horizon.

James Comey

“FBI unable to crack San Bernardino killers’ cell phone,” CBS, February 9, 2016:

WASHINGTON — FBI Director James Comey said Tuesday one of the phones used by the killers in the San Bernardino, California, attacks remains inaccessible to investigators more than two months after 14 people were fatally shot.

Testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Comey cited the case as an example of how encryption is affecting counterterrorism efforts. But he said the dilemma of bad guys “going dark” is mostly affecting state and local law enforcement officials who are trying to solve murder, drug and car accident cases.

Companies are increasingly making devices such as cellphones with encryption that allows only the people communicating to read the messages.

Comey said it’s a big problem when law enforcement armed with a search warrant can’t open a phone, even when a judge says there’s probable cause to have it opened….

They are just making excuses, because they want to be able to hack into all our communications, giving them power we can’t trust them with. After all, they would at least have the “metadata” – cell tower records of exactly who was contacted and when, and also patterns of movement./travel. That kind of information is independent of the phone. What are they going to get on the phone anyhow? Those same phone numbers recorded by the service provider? A bunch of jihadi videos? Don’t let them feed you that line of bull. They could do far more if they didn’t purge all their records on Muslim travelers at Homeland Security and elsewhere. They could do far more if they went back to monitoring the mosques. They could do far more if they hired Robert and Pamela Geller to go back to training agents on what to look for.

A counterjihad president will get proper training for the FBI and CIA. Meanwhile, Jim Comey appears to be one of the few in the Western elites who have actually read Islamic source texts. Good for him.

All agents need Robert and Pamela and all the counterjihad experts to unravel the Islamic mystique of deception, conspiracy and amorality. When they find out that psychopathy is the essence of Islam, they will be able to fight it.

I think he needs awareness of the muslim brotherhood ‘s presence and saturation of the administration, and the vast number of organizations nation wide with their purpose to misdirect and forbid the information of jihad, under the guise of diversity, racism and religious tolerance. Then he will understand the many closed streams of intelligence information he is facing and a recognition of the aided source.

The only realistic/possible solution to bring an end to Islamic jihad terrorism is for Muslims to renounce Islam. The Qur’an is an exceptionally evil book and Muhammad the prophet of Islam was an evil madman who likely never existed. The total abandonment of Islamic theology and law is the only thing that will prevent further Islamic jihad terrorism. As long as Muslims continue to believe that the Qur’an is the perfect word of God and Mohammad the perfect man to be followed in every example Islamic jihad terrorism will continue to manifest very frequently.

We ex-Muslims living with Islam’s formal and informal death penalty for apostasy know that Mohammedanism is a fraud.

Here is a recent statement from a group of Bangladeshi apostates living in the UK explaining the reasons why they have abandoned Islam:

“One who claims to be a messenger of God is expected to live a saintly life. He must not be given to lust, he must not be a sexual pervert, and he must not be a rapist, a highway robber, a war criminal, a mass murderer or an assassin. One who claims to be a messenger of God must have a superior character. He must stand above the vices of the people of his time. Yet Muhammad’s life is that of a gangster godfather. He raided merchant caravans, looted innocent people, massacred entire male populations and enslaved the women and children. He raped the women captured in war after killing their husbands and told his followers that it is okay to have sex with their captives (Qur’an 33:50). He assassinated those who criticized him and executed them when he came to power and became de facto despot of Arabia. Muhammad was bereft of human compassion. He was an obsessed man with his dreams of grandiosity and could not forgive those who stood in his way…

      The statement continues,

Muhammad was a narcissist, like Hitler, Saddam or Stalin. He was astute and knew how to manipulate people, but his emotional intelligence was less evolved than that of a 6-year-old child. He simply could not feel the pain of others. He brutally massacred thousands of innocent people and pillaged their wealth. His ambitions were big and as a narcissist he honestly believed he is entitled to do as he pleased and commit all sorts of crimes and his evil deeds are justified.”

Yes it is hard to understand why people worship that kind of person today .Some Russians think Stalin was a fantastic man despite the fact he killed more Russians than Hitler.
Tough ruthless men like Putin can be very popular if they are perceived as winners.
Even in the UK some people admire evil gangsters like the Krays and there is a plethora of books and films romanticising them.
I think that is why Daesch is attractive to young muslims because of their early victories over the pathetic Iraqui Army.Mohammed probably had this aura as well.Islam is so ingrained in the culture of some countries that it would be dangerous to dissent at all never mind renouncing it.One only hopes the movement out of this religion gathers pace because otherwise we will have endless civil wars in Muslim countries and the problems of terrorism and mass migration in the West?

Well said Saleem, you and your group are very courageous. Islam has developed the art of filling its followers with frustration with its prohibitions and taboos. Frustration breeds aggression and Islam then points its followers towards the ‘enemy’ and sanctions death and terror in the name Mr A. Do you let coworkers read your email? Does your maid get to read your private letters?

Have you ever posted on a website that speaks out against supremacist Islam? (This is known as “hate speech” in progressive circles, i.e. not “free speech.”)

… the FBI has more important things to do than breaking into 300 million citizens cell phones.

The head of the FBI just as much as told you that they DO want to break into 300 million citizens’ cell phones. With computers, breaking into 300 million is not much harder than breaking into one. The FBI has and uses custom-made viruses to “infect” phones and computers. In addition, government agencies are granted “back doors” by Apple, Google, phone companies, etc.

Think of the power of coercion and blackmail one could gain through knowing the personal and business secrets of 300 million people!

There are an awful lot of Islamists that need to be sent to prison, or hell and we need every tool we can get.

The problem with “Islamists” is Islam which is expressly committed to converting/murdering/subjugating non-Muslims. There are 1,800 MILLION Muslims worldwide, and millions in the U.S. (with more being brought in as fast as possible by Barack Hussein Obama). Most American Muslims arrived AFTER 9/11, i.e. during periods of what we are told is rampant “Islamophobia.”

Arresting and jailing a few terrorists is at best a BAND-AID. An arrest here and an arrest there will not staunch the rush of new willing terrorists.

Train wreaks, bridges falling, planes disappearing, nasty water….they can point out all the mischief and just have to get the necessary job, position; food inspector, doctor, teacher, maintenance power plant operator) lay low and spread the cash. 8. Chris Malan says

    Feb 10, 2016 at 4:38 am

It has nothing to do with encryption technology. Exactly how public/private key (asymmetric) encryption works is freely available. Just search the Net. Yet, if the key is long enough there is not enough computing power in the world to decrypt the message using a brute force attack, the only one that is guaranteed to work if enough computing power is available.

Asymmetric encryption is just a perfect form of encryption. That’s why you can trust that your credit card number won’t fall into the wrong hands if encrypted this way. Yes, there is a man in the middle attack, but that’s not easily done.

  9. Custos Custodum says

    Feb 10, 2016 at 4:54 am

The FBI is trying to acquire even more unconstitutional snooping powers for the purpose of intimidating anti-jihadists and ALL others opposed to totalitarian government. Neither 9/11 nor any other crime against Americans justifies flushing away what little remains of constitutional protections.

Meanwhile, as noted in other comments, law enforcement is taking a collective dive when it comes to Barry’s co-religionists assassinating innocent Americans.

The NSA already does hoover up “metadata” info (who, to whom, where, when, etc.) from every single email, SMS, phone call, “snailmail” letter, crossing, freeway drive, credit card transaction, car repair, utility bill, etc.

Bear in mind that suicide terrorists intent on murder and mayhem typically need to keep their operation confidential for only a limited time, until the operation is completed and the operatives are dead.

It is well known and documented through decades of published works that the content of a message can easily be shielded using a simple cryptographic method known as “one-time pad” which is said to be “theoretically unbreakable” (i.e. not breakable as a matter of basic mathematical impossibility, regardless of the skill and computing power applied). See http://users.telenet.be/d.rijmenants/papers/one_time_pad.pdf for details. The drawback is that (unlike “public key” encryption), one-time pad encryption requires encryption keys which must be distributed and shared among participants through secure means.

  11. Alarmed Pig Farmer says

This is where the natural alliance between globo-socialism and Islam comes into play. The FBI doesn’t have the encryption technology cuz they’re not allowed to by law, that being the proscription in the 4th Amendment against unreasonable search and seizure. This is what Sen Rand Paul filibustered about last year; the notion is that the government would get access to decryption algorithms to stop Moslems, then turn around and use it to police activity that has nothing to do with Moslem activism. We saw what the IRS did to help rig the 2012 election, so it’s not paranoia. Washington has taken over the country, illegally, and the DC metro is now the richest city in the country by far.

To grant the FBI (and DHS, and CIA, and others) a back door into Moslem communication would inevitably result in the new power being used to snoop on Infidels to limit their freedom. So the gubmint wants to limit freedom, and the Moslems do too. This situation means more money spent manually policing Moslems, more risk, and more death. It’s a win-win situation for the Moslems, as it always is.

    • Custos Custodum says

Exactly. Also, as explained elsewhere on this page, it is not hard for any organized terrorist group to keep the contents of its communications essentially safe from surveillance by using the “one-time pad” method of encryption. The FBI’s ongoing decryption initiative is directed against unorganized, regular citizens with no connection to terrorism.

While presented as a fight against “going dark,” the FBI’s relentless initiatives are pushed forward “for fun and profit.” Meanwhile, try getting the FBI interested in trifles like multi-million dollar international fraud.

          Privacy? You are paranoid.

Alinsky “Rules” in action – personalize and ridicule FIRST to detract from the substance of your power grab.

The constitutional right to be free from unreasonable government searches (which is what “privacy” means) is the very basis of a free society. It is the ONLY BARRIER between a freedom and totalitarian, genocidal government.

Are you familiar with the DETAILS of how totalitarianism took hold and functions in other countries?

I’d rather see Muslim radicals killed or imprisoned.

Your use of “rather” shows that you still see constitutional rights as a small price to pay, and that giving up our constitution will ACTUALLY result in “Muslim radicals killed or imprisoned.” Do you think fighting Muslims this is the REAL REASON why the FBI under Obama is clamoring for even more spying powers?

Most perpetrators of atrocities (e.g. Boston bombers, Fort Worth massacre, San Bernardino) were actually known by name to the FBI and other law enforcement authorities but no action was taken..

Organized terrorist groups can and will easily evade any additional snooping powers that we grant the FBI. These hoped-for new powers are intended to be used against regular citizens, exclusively for nefarious and totalitarian purposes.

Apple won’t create and give a back door to their unbreakable encryption to law enforcement,

Apple does give itself and law enforcement access to the phone itself where the message is stored in unencrypted form. A back door to the “encryption” is not required if you have access to the clear text. (BTW – how do we really know that Apple’s encryption is really “unbreakable”? Has Apple put up a $10,000,000 reward for anyone who manages to break it?)

The government doesn’t have the manpower to find the Islamists in this country let alone invade your precious “privacy”.

Exactly – as noted above, terrorists ACTUALLY KNOWN TO LAW ENFORCEMENT were allowed to proceed.

So now should authorize the FBI to expand huge manpower snooping on EVERYBODY and chasing zillions spurious electronic leads to terrorism? (Or is “terrorism” merely a smokescreen to gain more powers for a government agency?)

In case you haven’t noticed we are losing the war with Islamic lowlife murderers.

Naturally we are losing the war because nobody in any official position dare name the enemy – Islam – let alone analyze its motivating ideology, strategies, etc.

Is being checked for weapons at an airport an invasion of your privacy!?

Most Americans in 2016 will see this as a rhetorical question, which shows just how much of our clarity of mind and purpose we have lost in the alleged “fight against terrorism.”

For the record – YES, to an American, it is an invasion of privacy to be searched for weapons (or anything else) at an airport.

An interesting thought experiment is to ask what would happen if airlines themselves got to decide whether and how much to search passengers. Would some smart airlines find a niche for no-search flying?

9/11 ended touchy feely tiptoeing around privacy. Blame the Muslims.

Again, note the FBI-friendly attempt to portray the loss of our Constitution as a small price to pay.

The Constitution provides ample scope for legitimate law enforcement efforts which are NOT taking place. The government is essentially saying “We will not really prevent terrorism anyway but give up all constitutional rights. TRUST US.” The road to hell is paved with this type of naive “good intentions.”

A lot of paranoid comments are being made here by people who don’t understand encryption. It’s a lot easier to encrypt than to crack encryption. The fact that the FBI can’t crack the encryption doesn’t mean the terrorists are more advanced than the FBI, it means that encryption has gotten to the point that if we want to know wants in the phone we better have intelligence information like the password of the phone. If Muhammad and Ahmed are the only ones who know the password to Ahmed’s phones then the FBI better be monitoring their conversations or better yet Muhammad better be an FBI agent.

This is not the first story about our security agencies being unable to crack jihadists communications when they use encryption devices. It’s been a concern for some time.

This is the mother of all ironic situations.

The irony lies in a bizarre historical turn of events. During WWII the US operated a top secret facility in NW Washington, DC called the Naval Communications Annex. In reality this facility was where the US was working on cracking the German Enigma codes and the Japanese Naval codes known as JN-25. Guess who occupies this facility today – the DHS. This would be the same DHS that feels the PC need to have Islamic sympathizers on their management staff. Ever heard of Mohammed Elibiary?

Our government is doing everything in its power to deprive us of our phone/Internet privacy. Law-abiding citizens can’t have a private conversation anymore because muslims want to kill us. 9/11 happened, now we all have to forego our constitutional rights and be subjected to a humiliating search at the airport. It’s always the same in life, the good people suffer for what the bad people do. In the meantime western governments are allowing a mass invasion of unvetted muslim “refugees” resulting in socioeconomic chaos with a massive increase in the terror threat. I’m f*ing sick of it. No more of this catering to those who hate us and want to kill us, no more grovelling before a murderous ideology that’s worse than Nazism. Der Spiegel International has an article describing Trump as the “World’s Most Dangerous Man.” And I suppose he is, because he dares to speak frankly and stand strong for our country. Shame on him, what’s he thinking being tough for America? I used to think Trump was a joke billionaire. Now I’m thinking he’s got my vote. Our Muslim incumbent was a flop, I think I’ll give the tough-talking business man a chance.

The principal problem remains the refusal by the powers that be to see Islam, all of it, as a negative. The FBI and other government agencies could have encryption technology that is unsurpassed but as long as Islam is not seen for the spiritual fascism which it is only some tactical victories will be achieved now and again.

It remains a stunning phenomenon that even though figuring out how inimical Islam is to free societies is not all that difficult, American elites and Western elites in general refuse to even consider that the entire Islamic faith is the problem, which it surely is. The deadly Great Pretend Game (GPG) continues and as long as it does no amount of technology will make up for any kind of proper grand strategy, which would include 1) halting further Muslim immigration, 2) ostracism of Muslims in the West to the extent that adherents of other totalitarian ideologies are subject to, 3) deportation of any Muslim, not a citizen, who has committed a crime after he has served his sentence, 4) stripping Muslims who are citizens and perform some heinous action in the name of their religion of their citizenship, 5) very active programs to welcome and protect those Muslims already in the West who sense that there religion is a fraud but who are too afraid to leave it because of the harm that might come to them, 6) doing everything possible to end virtually any dependence on Middle Eastern oil (this will take time but it should be attempted), 7) mocking not just Islam but those twin idiocies that give Islam so much cover——–political correctness and multiculturalism, and 8) widespread educational programs that would help both Muslim and non-Muslim alike to understand that Islam is not just another religion but also a totalitarian political ideology that is a mortal threat to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, women’s rights, equality under the law and a true Golden Rule for all——–reading anything by Robert Spencer would be a good start here.

Tactics, however good, don’t amount to much if not accompanied by a sound and knowledgeable strategy. Right now America and so many other Western nations have no strategy respecting what to do about Islam because these nations don’t see Islam as a problem even though it is THE problem and not just some technological difficulty like encryption or (here we go again) that Islam is fine and noble but it’s just been hijacked by some extremists who don’t understand that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance. Still a long way away from overwhelming recognition of what THE problem is. A long way.

To David Olds – I find this whole discussion of super-encryptions, etc, moot in light of recent revelations in the media that the CIA and the FBI don’t even check Facebook and Twitter accounts of individuals who “were known” to them and later committed acts of terrorism. Not to mention “editing”, whitewashing and destroying files relative to specific persons of interest to those whose job it is to fight terrorism.

This discussion of encryptions, metadata gathering is classic “can’t see the forest for the trees”, minutia instead of common sense. Any expansion of these powerful law enforcement entities will only facilitate further spying, for all sorts of nefarious reasons – see IRS actions re tea party non-profit status – on the very people it is supposed to protect and serve. I value privacy highly, and I see it nearly gone completely.

One other consideration, in light of Obama’s aggressive moves towards placing “highly qualified” Muslims in high places in all the mega-bureaucracies of the gubmint on every level. This policy does NOT exclude his planting moles in the very services supposed to catch terrorists. Suppose a “highly qualified” Muslim in the FBI wanted to aid MB or any sworn enemy of the USA and share secret intelligence with them: Do you really think “encryption” will play a role in what unfolds?

        Cheers!

To David Olds, who says “Of course the read Facebook. Don’t be naive.”

Recently there have been news reports about such oversights (and lack of policy) in multiple terrorist cases. The MSM, reported that FBI and CIA failed to discover or monitor Facebook entries indicative of ISIS loyalty and other terrorist-related proclivities, interests and activities.on the Facebook pages of people who have been killed by police after committing terrorist acts. In fact, this pertained in the very matter of the San Bernardino pair.

There was also recently some “lone wolf” incident, too, which I can’t recall in specific right now, whose perpetrator’s Facebook entries were revealing…but only discovered after the fact, alas. Josh Ernest made a bumbling statement about how it was considered “inappropriate” for these agencies to be monitoring private Facebook accounts. People laughed at him.

There was in fact a lively discussion within the last week here on JW about how dim the FBI and CIA were in not using the common sense they were born with to monitor Facebook accounts of suspected terrorists..

People want to exercise their 1st Amendment Rights and have Private conversations. Now if you a supeonea to the cell phone get one for the password that belongs to the cell phone, a part of it to open it and make it work. If our companies don’t produce these encryptions, a German one will, or Israeli one or Chinese one. By having time company here you can request the key from them or through the judiciary.

How do you know that claim is REALLY true? Has Apple put up a reward of $10,000,000?

If I had discovered a secret backdoor (as happened with many previous encryption methods), I might decide e.g. to sell the method to the highest bidder, either wholesale or by decrypting important files retail.

“David Olds” claims to believe that technology is the key limiting factor in law enforcement efforts against Islam. The real limitation is organizational paralysis under orders from the very top (going back to Bush I).

@Watcher of the Watchmen. “If I had discovered a secret backdoor…” A perfect encryption system has no backdoor. The Commonly used RSA system was devised by an English mathematician working for British intelligence cracking German encryption in the second world war. It relies on huge prime numbers. The only sure way of cracking it is to try every possible combination and look at the results. There is not enough computing power for that on Earth. It’s a perfect system – the details of how it’s done are freely available, yet, even knowing exactly how it’s done one can’t decrypt it without the right key. Really wonderful, isn’t it?

This is a key point, precisely for secular Americans. Historically, of course, this builds on the traditional claim by European monarchs that they ruled “by the grace of G-d”, i.e. their title does NOT depend on the subjects’ (or anyone else’s) consent.

On British coins, one still finds the inscription “DG” for dei gratia (by the grace of G-d).

This shows that at least some jihad terrorists have access to encryption technology that the FBI doesn’t have

Not necessarily. The FBI may know the algorithm and implementation, but unless they know the key used to encrypt the data they’ll have to resort to brute-force (assuming the algorithm can be brute-forced), which can take up to ever.

Comey said it’s a big problem when law enforcement armed with a search warrant can’t open a phone, even when a judge says there’s probable cause to have it opened….

No, that’s the least of your problems. How many attacks were not foiled because law enforcement failed to crack an encrypted file? And how many attacks succeed only to, in the aftermath, we learn that the perpetrators had what should have been clear red flags? Remember the presentations by Major Hasan and how his colleagues feared he might go jihadi one day? Or how the San Bernardino muslimah passed several background checks? Was that because of encrypted data on a phone?

Before we can successfully fight the islamic enemy, we will have to get past the enemy in the White House… Obozo! It ought to be obvious that he is the primary agent of evil islam in our country. He undermines our efforts to fight the evil and burdens us with every stupid rule of engagement he can think of to slow us down. Until we are rid of him, there is little hope of making any progress against jihad. Barack is dead set against America and he will never stop his efforts to harm us. Law enforcement all over the world has the same problem: the top kids in the top classes don’t go into law enforcement. On the contrary… If I look at who I know became policemen from those I knew it would be those of the most mediocre intellect. In one case of extremely modest intellect. The most intelligent policeman I ever knew was our boxing instructor at university. He was an accountant with the police and a colonel. This is a problem for law enforcement all over the world. Luckily, in most cases, the average criminal is of even more mediocre intellect.
