Hugh Fitzgerald: What’s the Matter With Merkel?

Feb 20, 2016 12:07 pm By Hugh Fitzgerald

Merkel and migrant

“In October 2010, Merkel told a meeting of younger members of her conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party at Potsdam that attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany had ‘utterly failed,’ stating that: ‘The concept that we are now living side by side and are happy about it’ does not work and ‘we feel attached to the Christian concept of mankind, that is what defines us. Anyone who doesn’t accept that is in the wrong place here.'” — from the Wikipedia entry for Angela Merkel

The announcement by Angela Merkel’s government that Germany will take in another 500,000 Muslim “refugees” in 2016, on top of the 1.1. million Germany took in in 2015, should fill any well-informed German, or European, with bewilderment and dread. After all, throwing open the doors of Europe to what is in effect an invasion by Muslims (an invasion that needs no weapons, and that is accomplishing its conquests through demography), represents a complete and astonishing break with the West’s long history of resisting Islamic imperialism, a resistance bolstered by Western Christendom’s historic memory of the subjugation, through violence, of non-Muslims by Muslims from North Africa to India. This expansion of Dar al-Islam – the Domain of Islam — at the expense of non-Muslims was recognized as being a natural and essential part of Islam, to which statesmen as various as John Quincy Adams, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Winston Churchill have all testified. When the great mass of Christians thought about Muslims at all, they never doubted that they had been well-informed by those who had studied Islam or by those who had observed Muslims in their own lands: Islam was an all-encompassing and fanatical faith, deeply hostile to the two monotheisms – Judaism and Christianity – that preceded it. No Westerner prior to the present age would have employed that soothing and misleading phrase about “the three great Abrahamic faiths” that has gained such foolish currency, serving to conceal a great many differences at the very moment when Muslims are managing to enter the West in large numbers. In the Western world, even if they could not cite sura and ayat by number, non-Muslims in Europe for more than a millennium had a much better understanding of Islam than we do now, and instead of that  “three Abrahamic faiths” nostrum, they knew, though perhaps not literally, the Muslim  injunction to “take not Christians and Jews as friends, for they are friends only with each other.” This understanding did not depend on Europeans studying the contents of Sura 9 and a hundred other jihad verses in the Qur’an, or many hundreds of anti-Infidel hadiths. The inhabitants of Europe learned about Islam by coming into contact with Muslim raiders up and down their coasts, and with Muslim privateers attacking Christian shipping in the Mediterranean, seizing seamen as well as goods and the ships themselves.

Eventually Europe not only successfully resisted Islamic conquerors, but took the fight to Muslim lands and peoples. The French in Africa, the Italians in Libya, the Dutch in the East Indies, the British in India (with both Muslims and Hindus) were all examples of benign colonialism. Despite the current simple-minded denunciation of “colonialism,” in many places the colonial power helped civilize the uncivilized. The French in North Africa, for example, took their “mission civilisatrice” seriously. They founded schools, universities, hospitals, introduced modern agricultural methods, and spread the French language, which for many Muslims provided access to a wider intellectual world. The Italians in Libya (and in Somalia and Eritrea, too) built roads and schools, and introduced the Italian language, which had a similar opening-to-the-wider-world effect. Great Britain arrived in Egypt to install a competent civil service under Lord Cromer, a mission that lasted from 1882 to 1922, and in Iraq from 1922 to 1932, to usher a League of Nations’ mandate into statehood. There was and is no need to feel guilty over these examples of “colonialism” – the Muslim peoples were given far more than they gave.

But whatever one’s final judgment of individual examples of European “colonialism,” the general phenomenon signaled a relationship of the more powerful Europeans directing the less powerful Muslims. Europeans no longer saw Muslims as a threat, and began to forget the long history of Muslim aggression, and could not imagine that some day, they might be threatened from within, through the presence of large numbers of Muslims, wielding the silent weapon of demography. In an act of mass historical amnesia, the political and media elites of Europe have permitted millions of Muslim migrants to settle, virtually without serious discussion, within their countries. European leaders failed to study Islam, or to heed those who have (Jihad Watch would be a good place to start). so as to understand, and not after the fact, what the West was getting itself into.

There have always been some who, to borrow Matthew Arnold’s phrase, saw Islam steadily and saw it whole. In the Netherlands, the outspoken and brilliant Pim Fortuyn was the first to warn 0bout what Muslim immigration was doing to his country; after his assassination in 2002 (by a deranged man “defending” not just animal-rights but “defenseless” Muslims), Geert Wilders became the head of the anti-Islam movement in that country. In France, Marine Le Pen inherited her father’s political movement and transformed it, for she turned out to be much less offensive and more intelligent than he, with his dismissive remarks about the Nazi murders of Jews being a “detail” of World War II, had ever been. In Germany, a politician, writer, and Bundesbank officer, Thilo Sarrazin, wrote Deutschland schafft sich ab — “Germany Does Away With Itself.” This book, warning Germans about the effect on the national I.Q. level of large numbers of Muslim immigrants, became an instant bestseller. Of course, Sarrazin’s study was largely ignored by the political and cultural elite of Germany: it would not do to praise a thesis that even hinted at “racism,” and any discussion of comparative I.Q.s does not just hint at but for many people hollers “racism.” Nor should any writer be allowed to inquire into the effect on an individual’s capacity to think – his I.Q. – of his having been in thrall, his whole life, to a faith that demands mental submission, and that discourages, and even punishes, displays of skeptical inquiry. For Muslims have morphed, for defensive purposes in the West, into becoming a “race” entitled to all the protections that that entails. Sarrazin’s book got no traction; tellingly, six years after it first appeared, it has still not been translated into English. And Thilo Sarrazin himself had to endure what Wilders and Marine Le Pen, and Paul Weston, and Pat Condell, and many others have had to endure: that is, being absurdly labelled  “far-right” — the main weapon used by bien-pensants against anyone who takes an informed stand against Islam. Before his own book came out, Thilo Sarrazin was always seen as being on the stolid political center in Germany – even sitting on the board of the Bundesbank – and after it was published, nothing he says or does will allow him to shake off that “far-right” label.

Angela Merkel, who in 2010 was warning about the “utter failure” of German “attempts to build a multicultural society,” has since then established the most generous immigration policy in all of Europe. She has done this despite the fact that 81% of Germans oppose Merkel’s immigration policy, plowing ahead, determinedly ignoring the will of the people, almost as if she had some kind of weird duty to allow in as many immigrants – Muslim immigrants – as she can. And since within Schengenland internal border checks have been eliminated, the other signatories to Schengen may ultimately suffer from a too-generous immigration policy in Germany. Merkel’s policy has come under attack, unsurprisingly, from France’s tough-on-Islam Prime Minister, Manuel Valls. In mid-February, he called the policy of Chancellor Angela Merkel towards asylum seekers  “unsustainable in the long term” and insisted in an interview, with Merkel in mind: “We have to say this clearly: Europe cannot take in all migrants from Syria, Iraq or Africa. It has to regain control over its borders, over its migration or asylum policies.”

But none of this has had an effect on Chancellor Merkel. Not even the hundreds of sex attacks on  German women in Cologne on New Year’s Day, nor the mounting evidence of aggressions by recently-arrived refugees all over Europe, have given her pause. Merkel is not weighed down psychically by some memory of Germany having been a “colonial” power in the Arab and Muslim world. That “colonial” history, the one that the French and English Left both like to invoke when insisting on their own country’s supposed duty to resettle Muslim “refugees,” is missing from the German historical records. As for German East-Africa and German West-Africa, neither included more than an insignificant number of African Muslims.

Why should Merkel be so insistent on allowing in so many of these Muslims (whether called migrants, or refugees, the distinction being that migrants move in search of a better life, while refugees are fleeing persecution and death) into Germany, far beyond the numbers taken by other European countries? She hasn’t deigned to give any justification for this policy, one that is so unpopular with the German people, and that has also antagonized and worried other European leaders such as Valls. If these Muslim migrants and refugees need to move somewhere – and it is not clear that all of them do – everyone knows that there are many fabulously rich Arab states, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, that have plenty of money, have always needed vast numbers of foreign workers, and could much more easily integrate migrants (or “refugees”) who are both fellow Arabs and fellow Muslims, than could Germany or any other European state.

The obvious explanation for Merkel’s madness is that she subliminally sees her policy — the expression of a diseased sympathy — as a way of “making amends” (as if amends could ever be made) for the Hitlerian horror of seventy years ago, one still hauntingly present in some, though not all, German psyches. But to make amends to the dead Jews of Europe by admitting live Muslims into Germany, when it is Muslims who today are the chief carriers of antisemitism all over Europe, from Malmo to Madrid, is madness. Has anything happened since 2010, when Merkel first admitted that Germany’s attempts to build a multicultural society had “utterly failed,” to make her rethink that original assessment? And how should we describe her permitting massive  numbers of Muslims into Germany when the results of Muslim immigration so far in that country, and in Europe, are already there for all to see (e.g., in postings at Jihad Watch), if not as madness? There is no antidote, it seems, to this particular furor islamicus.

Here in the US we have undergone a similar effect from a leader that apparently thinks we are too strong. His behavior has alienated our historical friends and embraced our enemies, even to the extent of bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia and insulting the Queen and government of England. I was hoping your article would have an explanation for Merkel’s madness, but at the end we are left on both sides of the Atlantic, shaking our heads in puzzlement at our leader’s suicidal behavior, and wondering if it isn’t some kind of weaponized meme left over from the Cold War that went off long after it might benefit its creators.

Merkel, and perhaps other Germans, feel the need to atone for the past sins of a long past fascist anti-semitic Germany. No one else expects Germans to do that, and least of all by ruining their own country. The irony is that in imagining it is atoning for its anti-semitic past, Germany is importing millions of Muslim anti-semites. The growing anti-semitiscm in Western Europe is testimony to this fact. It’s not the indigenous western Europeans who are mounting the increasingly frequent attacks on Jews. It is the Muslim new-comers whose toxic, fascist, ideology exhorts them to slay Jews wherever they find them.

Clive, that does not explain why so many European nations that either were not Fascist or even *fought* the Nazis during WWII are also welcoming in huge numbers of Muslim rapefugees.

Here in the US when I see this madness in action either in Germany, in France, Spain, or at home, I do something about it beyond shaking my head. I vote for Donald Trump and redouble my efforts to smash the existing Republican Party (the other party is a hopeless mess of ignoramuses and miscreants) and forming a new nationalist party dedicated to protecting our own from marauding Mohammedan hordes.

Well, if you don’t have a logical answer, look for an illogical one. Merkel is pushing a New World Order agenda, and creating a Germany with no national identity. If nationalism is gone, it’s much easier to control a populace. Germany is no longer German, France will no longer be French, Sweden no longer Swedish; just one big horrific brown skilled blue eyed entity that can be manipulated by the likes of George Soros and his ilk.

Crazy, I know. Any better explanations out there?

I think her behavior is a relic of the cold war. Just as the Green movement was started by the East Germans to impede the West German economy, Merkel’s behavior is designed to impede the new Germany. When you have a leader that intentionally weakens their own country, despite massive protest by the populace, you have to look to their mindset and where and when it was forged. Just as in the US, Germany has a leader that is embarrassed by its strength, and is working to lessen it. The excuse that importing foreigners will provide workers to support German retirees is laughable when the behavior of the newcomers is observed.

It has always seemed to me that Angela Merkel is simply doing what almost any German national leader would do: trying to demonstrate good world citizenship as a way of offsetting the memory of Germany’s still recent past, which was notable for the opposite. It is one of the terrifying ironies of historical development that Europe, not just Germany, is today helpless in the face of a threat to every best thing the West stands for from a massive force at least as dangerous as Nazism, because an acute self-consciousness about the worst in its past seems to render self-respect and self-defense criminal.

This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a…whatever what is going on now can be called. Self-evisceration, one way or another. Perhaps it was inevitable.

      Feb 21, 2016 at 9:04 am

Nathaniel, your post makes good sense. Well and briefly said.

But as to your statement “Perhaps it was inevitable”, I don’t think it was. It’s a result of a lot of people making a lot of choices over a long period of time. Were all of those choices inevitable? Does anyone have free will? The ability to choose to look at reality honestly or to turn away, to let emotion trump facts and reason or to scrupulously seek the facts and honestly apply one’s best objective reasoning skills to work out the truth… that’s free will. We all have the capacity to choose among those opposing alternatives.

Nothing that involves those alternatives is inevitable. People could have made different choices.

But, unfortunately, striving to be objective, honest, fact-seeking and scrupulous of reasoning takes more mental effort, self-discipline, and energy to sustain. A lot of people choose to take the path of least resistance, and whoever takes the harder path winds up having to have that other difficult trait: courage in the face of massive irrational opposition.

So while a significant number of people making the wrong choices isn’t inevitable, it’s not surprising.

Some how they” IMAGINE ” that POLITICAL CORRECTNESS and MULTI MULTICULTURALISM, with a PINCH OF HUMANITARIANISM is the ESSENCE of THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST ! Any 8 year old from A GOOD CONFESSIONAL CHURCH WHICH STILL ACKNOWLEDGES THE AUTHORITY OF THE BIBLE AND THE HISTORIC CREEDS is able to see THROUGH THIS B.S. . If I were MERKEL , I’D be Careful about ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO READ THEIR BIBLES , AS THIS MIGHT PROPEL HER IMPEACHMENT AND IMPRISONMENT FOR TREASON ! P.S. CHRISTIAN Democratic Party ? LOL!!! her reason might be something other than anything rational or even emotional; it might be supernatural. She might have had a ‘visitation’ similar to that of Mohammad, Joseph Smith, and others who became leaders of cult movements, -a visitation by an irresistible “angel of light” (but from Lucifer’s kingdom) which was so impressive and deceiving that she was convinced and conscripted into a duty to fulfill her heavenly calling to bring the people of Allah into the European home for some inconceivable higher purpose or destiny. That would perfectly explain her behavior, if it were the case.

Fine essay by Fitzgerald. Especially good to see Western imperialism given a thumbs up since, while certainly not perfect, was nonetheless the most enlightened imperialism of all time anywhere on earth and with altruism often a feature of it, something virtually absent from non-Western imperial endeavors. Just as the West is best, so was an extension of it, i.e., its imperialism. Particularly admirable was British imperialism which carried in its imperial knapsack the seeds for establishing polities which had the capacity to work because of four things: 1) democracy; 2) capitalism; 3) the rule of law pursuant to an enlightened legal system, in this instance Common Law; and 4) a proper moral foundation.

Think any of this is taught to students today? Not a chance and hence helps to account for not only ignorance of the greatness of the West but even actual hostility to it, promoted by, among others, leftists and Muslims, both of whom tend to ruin everything they come into contact with——-including, in fact most especially, the mind. Upside-down world.

As the Greeks, Romans, Spanish, British, and Soviets have all learned, no Empire lasts forever. The legacies they leave behind are what makes them different.

Some Empires leave death, destruction, and despair in their wake, as the Soviets did.

While others make the World a much better place during their Empire’s time in the sun. Imagine how different, in a very bad way, the World would look now had Great Britain never spread its influence across the entire globe.

Here is but a small list of very large and extensive contributions the British left in their wake. We all owe them our gratitude:

      1. English language
      2. The United States of America
      3. The agricultural and industrial revolutions
      4. Nearly every modern sport
      5. Mechanical inventions (railway, steam locomotive, gas turbine, jet engines, automobiles, etc.)
      6. Economics (mercantilism, free trade, capitalism)
      7. Scientists & Philosophers (Bacon, Locke, Newton, Darwin, Russell…)
      8. Politicians (Churchill, Thatcher, among many others)
      9. Programmable computer
      10. World Wide Web
      11. Literature & Poetry (Shakespeare, Milton, Bronte’s, Kipling, Dickens, Elliot…)
      12. Television
      13. RADAR
      14. Theory of Evolution
      15. Telephone
      16. Parliamentary monarchy
      17. Architectural styles (Norman, Tudor, Georgian, Regency, Victorian…)
      18. Pop music (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Queen, and so many more)
      19. Luxury cars (Roll Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Lotus, Aston Martin)
      20. Negative & color photography
      21. Modern systems of finance
      22. Fair systems of legal jurisprudence
      23. Fashion (Burberry, Dunhill, Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, FCUK)
      24. The submarine and battleship
      25. Modern household appliances.

My gosh…the list just goes on and on and on. See for yourself. Here’s a very comprehensive list:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_innovations_and_discoveries

Second to Jesus Christ and Christianity, British Colonialism is probably the best thing that ever happened to the World. Thank God they weren’t satisfied with simply staying put on that small island.

The Bible does not teach individuals to be so stupid as to leave their doors open so anyone can come in, steal their possessions and hurt them and their families. The same thing applies to nations! The Bible does not teach leaders and citizens to allow thousands of unscreened people into their countries, for no reason, with no plan in place to even deal with them!

And especially people who follow an EXPLICITLY anti-Christian ideology which also commands them to subjugate others!

If you can find such commands or even approval of such behavior, feel free to share it.

SPOILERS: It doesn’t exist! This idiocy has nothing to do with Christianity!

Right! Luke 12:39-40 (RSV): “But know this, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would have been awake and would not have left his house to be broken into”.

Deep, profound sadness permeates the thoughts of all those who are wise enough to see what is happening to western societies. The deterioration of western civilization in the face of Islam will lead to the loss of the many advances that have been made in the humanities, the sciences and technologies over the past century. The lessons of history have been forgotten by our political elite and by doing so they are actively participating in the destruction of our way of life. Islam is NOT an inclusive religion. It is not, nor ever has been, a religion of peace. What are our political elite doing to the WESTERN WORLD our forefathers gave their blood, sweat and tears to create for us???

    Mad-cow disease is one explanation.
Another is toxoplasmosis – it is an organism that lives in the brains of mice but needs to enter the gut of a cat to complete its life-cycle, so it causes mice to lose their natural fear of cats, which leads to them being eaten by cats. Apparently, 50% of humans are infected by toxoplasmosis.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxoplasmosis
“Infected rodents show a reduction in their innate aversion to cat odors…Infected rodents have also been shown to have lower anxiety, using traditional models such as elevated plus mazes, open field arenas, and social interaction tests. …
“Crazy cat-lady syndrome” is a term coined by news organizations to describe scientific findings that link the parasite Toxoplasma gondii to several mental disorders and behavioral problems…Cat lady is a cultural stereotype of a woman, often a spinster, who compulsively hoards and dotes upon cats.”

Merkel is a childless woman. Instead of hoarding hundreds of cats, she is hoarding hundreds of thousands of Muslims. I think the probability of T. gondii infection is high.

There is more to her policy letting Muslims in than meets the eye. Months leading up to Merkel’s decision to let in hords of Muslim Refigees and Invaders, the Islamic world were quick on mark, at least in parts: the Queen of Jordan, Rania payed a visit to Germany and she addresses the Bundastag to convinced them the Syrians are well qualified and well mannered. She is not new to Europe – she been awarded numerous awards by several European countries. In the meantime, the Turkish government played their part to push Europe to take more Muslims. They used that propoganda photo of a boy laying on the beach and not controlling borders on the eastern front. The Arabs closed their gates to the refugees and kept pressure on to take them in Europe.

Merkel came under pressure fro their own quarter – the successfull industry – they worried about their future due to the forcasted reduction of their future population. After Turkish pressure on Europeans, the turkish PM called them cold hearted in the EU parliment, the whole EU leaders agreed to help the poor Syrians who are leaving the hostile land. Merkel came out with an absurd decision and informed the world that Germany is ready to take an unlimited number of Muslims.

    The rest is a history.

I see this Immigration disaster…combined with other European difficulties as game changers.

Remember The German People…Never Underestimate Them…they have been known to go from one mode to a completely different mode rapidly and decisively…Look for a very Persuasive and Potent Leadership rising amongst them even now…so completely different from the present leadership…Watch Who is willing to ally with them…Other Countries Will Join Them…This may lead to a powerful organized multi-national alliance…The Roman Catholics…The Protestants…Eastern Orthodox can put aside any differences…watch what This Power Does…it could be so formable…and determined to project its strength economically and militarily…If the Middle East does form some Broad Leadership there…This Power may try to cooperate with this Middle Eastern leadership…until it is provoked…then watch the result…a whirlwind is coming.

There are still a substantial number of ethnic Germans in the countries that are now Germany and Austria’s neighbors to the east…Poland, the Czech Republic…Slovakia…Hungary…and Slovenia….In addition…there are…significant populations in such areas as Estonia…Latvia…Romania…Moldova…Ukraine…Russia and Kazakhstan.

Who Among these and who else may join in alliance with a strong Germanic leadership…time will tell…
as far as numbers…hundreds of millions could be the result…and in any strong show of strength….
they don’t get any tougher than these peoples…not to mention their exceptional grasp of technology.

The Modern State of Germany has been leading Europe by example…a Europe which combined into a economic powerhouse…They astonishingly came back to life (after WW2) and put there talents to real use…and they inspired and helped all the above to prosper…they are well respected by all…and very capable of inspiring others…they have the very qualities to rally the troops…the potential is very great…with the right leadership…they will lead a powerful event.

No one can predict the specific details of such Alliances…but easily see the potential if the known world leadership continues vacillating and conditions continue to worsen…a powerful motivator for a new union to dawn…not the union Europe is now…this new union can have a core group…and economically and militarily there will be others who want to share the benefits…change is coming.

….”making amends” (as if amends could ever be made) for the Hitlerian horror of seventy years ago: ironic not only because these people are the world’s leaders in anti-Semitism, but also because Hitler was an admirer of Islam and Muslims. He hosted the infamous Amin Haj Al-Husseini during the war and gave him the instruments to broadcast German propaganda throughout the Arab world. As a result the Arabs are still very pro-German and nostalgic for Hitler (saying things like “He should have finished the job”). Maybe Merkel has been infatuated with this Islamic admiration for Germany and its totalitarian past, not yet understanding where it comes from? By allowing massive immigration from Muslim lands, she is in fact helping to recreate it! Who was it who said “Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it?”

Puzzles puzzle me (and cause me to lose sleep), and for me, “Merkel’s madness” is a major puzzle. I haven’t been able to solve the puzzle, but while trying to sleep (“blue-skying it; thinking outside the box”) I had a couple of ideas that I’ll submit for anyone’s consideration. I don’t have good evidence to support these ideas, just some anecdotes; therefore, this submission will probably be long and not very cogent. Maybe, however, my thoughts can stimulate more knowledgeable people (such as Hugh) to make further progress solving the puzzle.

And although it may deter many potential readers from reading any further, I’ll try to assist remaining readers to get through my ramblings by starting with two summary statements: 1) Maybe the comments by the “top psychiatrist” referenced by “mortimer”, namely, that “Merkel has ‘lost touch with reality’,” are 180º wrong; maybe, instead, only very recently has she begun to get in touch with reality, and 2) For those of us who shudder at the ongoing Muslim invasion of the West, maybe “Merkel’s madness” is the best thing that could have happened — to stop the invasion!

Now, some ramblings, starting with the possibility that Merkel is starting to get in touch with reality. What led me to suggest such a “crazy idea” for consideration were the trips that I took in the early 1980s (when the Cold War was still raging) to (West) Germany (many times), to Sweden (for 10 days) and to the USSR (for two weeks).

I could relay many stories that left me with the overwhelming impression of how well-ordered Germany was, but for brevity’s sake, I’ll skip them. Similarly, I could relay multiple stories about how “sane” Sweden was: I even summarized to my Swedish host that Sweden was “an island of sanity in a world gone mad.”

And then there was the USSR (a week in Tallinn, Estonia and a week touring from Leningrad / St. Petersburg to Moscow). I could tell stories about why we Americans onboard the plane truly did break into cheers when the plane took off from Moscow, getting us out of there; about how, when I got back to Heathrow, I was so moved that I wanted to stand up in the restaurant and yell to everyone, “People, you don’t understand how lucky you are to be free!”; and how amazed I was to soon thereafter find that a newspaper reporter had nailed it so well (I can’t recall, now, who the reporter was quoting): “the USSR isn’t so much a dictatorship as it is just a bungling bureaucracy.” I’ll summarize my agreement with that assessment with a single anecdote.

I was an invited guest to the USSR (invited speaker on the topic of Nuclear Winter), and during the first day in the USSR, I (an “honored guest”!) was forced to stand in (bureaucratic) lines for a full eight hours. I kid you not: eight (8) hours of standing in lines! And you know, my wife and I felt bad, because at the end of a very long day, when we stood at the end of another long line, this one just to get into a cafe to get some coffee (withdrawal from my caffeine addiction was giving me a splitting headache), a line that would have brought our total standing-time for the day to at least ten hours, some “locals” (Estonians), hearing us talk / complain in English, kindly pointed out that the line was only for “locals” to get into the cafe; foreigners could bypass the line.

Okay, what has all that got to do with Merkel? Here’s my thought. She’s about my age, but she grew up in East Germany. Her reality, therefore, was the “unreality” of East Germany. I was never there, but if I put together my experiences in West Germany, Sweden, and the USSR, I wouldn’t be surprised if I could construct a fairly realistic picture of the unrealities of her reality! From the German side, the dominant feature would be orderliness and efficiency; from the Swedish side, the dominant feature would be sanity and friendliness; and from the USSR side, the dominant feature would probably be of personal safety (it was amazing how safe my wife and I felt walking the streets of Tallinn, Leningrad, and Moscow — even at nights) and (of course) of overwhelming, incredibly inefficient, and dehumanizing bureaucracy (“designed for the general case, but special cases are all that ever occur”).

For Merkel, therefore, perhaps nothing could seem so “unreal” as what those of us who have experienced or otherwise learned about “Muslim madness”. I’m suggesting that, for Merkel, slovenly, arrogant, unruly, irrational, belligerent, barbaric behavior of Muslims would seem “unreal”. I’m therefore suggesting that Merkel is, not now losing touch with reality, but perhaps finally getting in touch with reality! That is, maybe she’s now beginning to see how barbaric the Muslim invaders are — which could explain her attempts to bribe Turkey to turn off the spigot and her comments about the need for most “refugees” to return to their homeland when hostilities cease.

Now, turning to my second speculation: a decade-or-so from now, maybe “Merkel’s madness” will be seen to have been a good thing. To see why I suggest such “craziness”, recall that, in 2010, Hugh wrote:

“Which now brings me to what, instead of those wasteful wars, and that sentimental messianism, of Iraq, and to a lesser extent Afghanistan, should be done – not to bring “victory” in the war of self-defense against the Jihad now visited, in every sense, upon us, because no “victory” is possible – but, rather, to “re-dimension” (cut down to size) the problem, to make it less dangerous, to bring down the level of risk. How is this to be done?

“In the first place, through self-education and through dissemination of what you have learned about Islam to others. They don’t have to know everything about Islam, but they have to know something. And bookish knowledge should be supplemented by an understanding of Muslim behavior, and how it reflects what Islam inculcates. You don’t have to know a specialized vocabulary, though such words as Jihad and dhimmi and taqiyya are useful to understand, to define for others, and to employ…

“And then what? Then one would see that the war of self-defense against Islam is primarily an ideological war, and we have to be sure of ourselves, sure that whatever our own great faults, or the faults of our societies, they are as nothing compared to the death-in-life that Islam presents. We need to grasp what Islam teaches, and what the consequences are of growing up in societies suffused with Islam, and what happens to individual liberties, to the enterprise of science, to the practice of art, when one is raised up in a society where everything militates against free and skeptical inquiry…”

Thus, Hugh emphasized the need for “self education… dissemination [of the knowledge]… [and the realization that it’s] primarily an ideological war, and we have to be sure of ourselves…”

Now, look at the fruits of “Merkel’s madness”: throughout the West, there’s been a huge increase in “self education” of Muslim madness (via the most effective educational process possible, namely, experience), there’s been substantial “dissemination” of the knowledge of Muslim madness (although more and more informative reporting is definitely needed), and there’s been substantially greater awareness that our culture is vastly superior to Islamic culture. Therefore, maybe — just maybe —a decade-or-so from now, “Merkel’s madness” will be seen as having been the tipping point for the collapse of Islam!

That is, maybe we should begin to look at the half-empty glass as half-full: maybe half of all Muslims in the world are decent, rational humans (maybe less in Afghanistan and tribal areas of Pakistan; maybe more in Iran and Egypt). I expect (and have read reports suggesting) that they’re “sick and tired” of their “fundies”. Therefore, maybe, just maybe, when even more Westerners reach the point of telling all Muslims to either “shape up or get out”, then the sensible half of all Muslims will demand an end to fundamentalist Islam, in effect, trashing the Koran, causing Islam to collapse — which, of course, would lead to a sigh of relief heard and felt throughout the world!

Mark, yes: if one looks at the issue solely from the viewpoint of physics, a nuclear-bomb-generated electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a credible risk.

For contrast, let me insert something about “nuclear winter”. A steering committee of the International Council of Scientific Unions asked me (and about 10 other scientists) to evaluate the nuclear-winter issue at an international conference in Tallinn as a result of a paper in Science by Sagan et al. warning about the THEORETICAL worldwide, devastating effects of nuclear winter. The essence of my presentation (a “parody” of which I posted at http://zenofzero.net/docs/ContentiousCommunications.pdf ) was that the theory was terribly weak. And I’ll add that, actually, it “hurt” me to “rake Sagan over the coals” as I did, because I appreciated his many other efforts to communicate science to the public — but in this case, he stepped beyond science into politics.

In the case of EMPs, however, there’s really no doubt about the theory, which has been well known since at least the early 80s. Further, the solar-induced EMP of the late 80s that knocked out Quebec’s power-grid was a stimulating (!) demonstration of the reality of the vulnerability of our infra-structure. Even a small nuclear bomb could cause much more damage (an E1 as opposed to an E3 event), but over a smaller area.

As for the particular points raised in the article you linked, I’m not sufficiently knowledgeable to make useful comments. What you might want to do is read the article by Barnes available at http://www.informationweek.com/government/cloud-computing/emp-debunked-the-jolt-that-could-fry-the-cloud/d/d-id/1315481 . I found his following assessment to be particularly interesting, which he wrote in a comment near the bottom of the first page of the comments on his article:

“To achieve the really frightening E1 effects, furthermore, that bomb has to go to a fairly precise altitude over the target area, which is a job for a good-sized rocket, and any old rocket won’t do that, either. Mating a bomb to a rocket is also extremely non-trivial. So we can eliminate terrorist groups and criminal gangs from doing all that; it’s just too hard for it to be credible…

“If there’s a danger at all, it’s that a collapsing state with nuclear weapons and rockets might take a wild shot on the way down, and everything might work perfectly, and the EMP would turn out to be much easier to produce and much bigger than could have been expected. Or in short, a really crazy government on its way out, takes its one sorta-working bomb, puts it on its almost-working ICBM, everything works, and then it turns out that all the unknowns in the research actually favored the attacker.

“Again, how crazy do they have to be to take that bet? Knowing what will happen if it doesn’t pay off, given that what they were trying to do will be screamingly apparent?…

“So, adding it all up: the science is still forming and being done. The cost of doing the recommended policy is enormous and looks as if it will mostly flow to one political faction and their cronies. And for an opposing nation (one of the very few that could) to launch such an attack requires some suicidal mixture of stupidity and madness.”

My impression, therefore, is that our biggest EMP risk is from the “crazies” in North Korea (especially since they now may have detonated a hydrogen bomb and seem to have the needed missile capabilities) and that Israel’s biggest risk is from the “crazies” of Hezbollah (if they continue to be supported by Iran). I expect that other Muslim terrorist groups won’t be able to develop capabilities to pose a credible EMP threat — but I expect that they’ll continue to try to develop “dirty bombs” as well as chemical and biological weapons.

      • Nick McC says

        Feb 22, 2016 at 9:51 am

Oh, Keys, I wholeheartedly agree with the essence of your comment. I don’t know how to adequately express the pain I feel for the heroes in the Muslim world who are trying to free their societies from their damnable clerics. Who can sufficiently express his solidarity with the “dissidents” in Saudi prisons who are confined for years and being whipped for expressing their thoughtful opinions or sentenced to death for “apostasy”? Similarly for those hacked to death in Bangladesh, stoned or burned to death in Pakistan, and executed in Iran. A line that burned into my consciousness was by one of them: “They can kill me, but they can’t kill my ideas.”

As for “how do we solve their problem?, to me it’s so overwhelmingly frustrating that there seems to be so little we can do to try to help them. If we try, many times we seem to do more harm than good: the ruling clerics use our attempts to help “the dissidents” as further evidence that there’s a “western conspiracy” against Islam.

About all that we (especially we “little people”) seem to be able to do effectively is to continue to apply the idea that you expressed, “knowledge will be a key in this war”, especially by using the internet. As inconsequential as it probably is, what I do is spend a couple of hours every day and, starting from the daily list of articles given at http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/, go to news outlets commenting on Islam and try to add sensible (not sensational or conspiracy-theory) assessments of Muslim mistakes. Many times my comments are censored (e.g., I’ve almost given up at the Saudi Gazette), but at least 50% of my comments are published — and hopefully they’ll get a few more Muslins to start thinking for themselves.

More generally, though, and looking at the larger picture, I’m hopeful for substantial progress in the destruction / collapse of Islam, because Islamic clerics have tapped themselves in a Catch-22: on the one hand, maintaining and propagating their ideas relies on the people’s ignorance, but on the other hand, their societies will continue to fall (and fall even farther) behind unless the people become educated. Of course Muslim clerics blame “the West” for backwardness in the Muslim world, but if you’ll follow the comments of many Muslim writers (especially comments by younger Muslims), I expect that you, too, will be pleased to see how many are rejecting clerical conspiracy theories, seeing that the root problem is the atrocious quality of most Muslim educational systems.

It’s gonna be a long war. It reminds me of what the physicist Max Plank said about a similar situation in science: “A… truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather, because its opponents eventually die and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.” And thus I relish comments such as those I heard from a young woman in college in Iraq: “I hate all clerics.”

          @Nick McC
Thank you for your kind, heartfelt reply. It brought tears to my eyes for those suffering in this “long war”.

You don’t need to hear this from another one of the “little people”, but please accept my little thanks for what you do in charity to spread the truth each day on the internet sites. Thank you. Count me as one of your students.

Loved the hopeful quote from Max Planck, though we know the hated clerics realize this too, so they set up their madras, etc to win the hearts and souls of youth. We will fight this too.

Peace and Good to you, Sir!

It’s got NOTHING to do with making amends to the Jews, as they are suffering more than ever from Islamic persecution. It has everything to do with power politics. Merkel is an internationalist, like so many in the Western political elite. She wants to strengthen the EU and sees the best way to do this by overwhelming the member governments with an invasion of barbarians they are unable to cope with. Her strategy, which she has proclaimed loudly right from the beginning, is that ‘Migration needs an EU-wide response!’ Hence, the member nations will be dependent on funds, organisation and EU law-enforcement to manage and control the chaos.

It is a revolution from above, perpetrated by the unelected bureaucrats in Brussels upon the European peoples. It is an act of treachery. Every one of them ought to be swinging from the end of a rope! She has made civil war inevitable.

Not mentioned in the article is that Merkel is a communist. There has been a long time bond between the totalitarians in communism, Fascism, Nazism and the supremacist ideology of ISLAM.

Bat Ye’or pointed out in “Eurabia” that as a result of the Euro-Arab Dialogue in 1973, European elitists doomed their own countries. I hardly feel sorry for Europeans except for the innocent people being invaded by this modern day “hijra”.

The remaining countries of “Western Civilization” (U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand…primarily) need to wake up before Obama completely morphs into Merkel and completes his mission to destroy America.

Though I tried several times to slog through the entire Koran, I found it impossible to keep any interest in reading that excruciatingly boring tome. So thanks to all who post pertinent portions of Mu’s ravings so we can understand what we’re up against.

BTW, I threw the book in the trash when I moved recently, right along with the other garbage.

I think there are other factors at play here than just the personal motivations that Merkel might have. For once, I think Juncker’s role is underestimated. He was the one who appealed to the countries of Europe last september, with tears in his eyes, to finally “stop arguing and take action” to help all the poor refugees landing in Greece and Italy. Merkel and Juncker are known to be very close friends. I think she couldn’t say no to him.
Then there are the Greek, who felt they’d been very “punished” by Germany for the European debt crisis. Since there was no way they could handle so many refugees financially or otherwise, I think they pressured the rest of Europe -especially Germany- to take them in. Tsipras has been making threats last week again as to what he will do if his neighbouring countries close their borders for refugees. And finally, I do think there are definitely forces at play within Germany, as mentioned, the heavy guilt from WWII. But I don’t think it necessarely has to be Merkel’s main personal motivation, and I therefore think that putting it all on her is over-simplifying things.

    Hugh,

That’s a good article, but I think the cause lies elsewhere. Germany has too few babies and young people. It threatens the stability of the economy and society, and state subsidies for bearing and raising children have not solved the problem.

To prevent a demographic collapse without opening the floodgates for immigration, Merkel would have to promote traditional families, encouraging young people, mainly through the schools, to express their sexuality in marriage and to be open to having children, and to dedicate their lives to caring for their spouses and children, come what may.

Of course such a policy would come under enormous attack by sexual revolutionaries, feminists, homosexual activists, and gender ideologues, all of whom have child-unfriendly ideologies. When I talk about the latter two groups, I don’t mean people merely advocating tolerance, but rather those wanting state funding and promotion of non-traditional sexuality and sexual practices. As for the feminists and sexual revolutionaries, is it unfair to say that Germany and other western countries are eliminating their futures with their contraceptives and abortion clinics?

Even if Merkel has the honesty to see this, she probably doesn’t want such a fight on her hands, especially considering that she would have little support from the Lutheran and Catholic churches. When the churches don’t actively subvert traditional morality, they are still often cowardly about it. Merkel might have regarded taking in a couple million immigrants as the easier way out.
One last point: if Merkel’s answer to the question about the Islamization of Europe was honest, it shows she does not fully grasp the dangers of this development. She thinks a dialogue with Muslims will always be possible. That’s partly true, but as Islam gains in strength, the moderates―those you can meaningfully talk to―will have less and less influence over the inherent aggression of the religion.

Angela “Denethor” Merkel is a POLITICIAN.

POLITICIANS ARE SELF-PROMOTING SALESMEN, OWNED BY CORPORATIONS AND BANKS.

“Socialism” (communism; = gangster extortion = slavery) is never OK.

What is OK, is when government does it’s proper job to be the largest collectively-owned non-profit insurance company.

When Conservatives try to run it as a for-profit business, with bottom lines etc, they screw over the disabled who in my estimation are the only ones who should be using it anyway – not the gays, whores, feminist basket-weavers etc!

It’s worse wen liberals force it on everyone else to line their own pockets by pretending to help feminazi and/or MUSLIM “victims” etc.

The West is ruled by corporations. Corporations are made up of SALESMEN. Salesmen automatically and instinctively want to trade off anything and everything (your rights) for their main idol of “money!”

And the corporazi salesmen are also all owned by the banksters aka the global counterfeiters’ union.

Since they already have ALL the money, what they want to trade it for is POWER – for TOTAL, “totalitarian” power over everyone else.

And that means (as Karen Schoen puts it) … “Socialism, Progressivism, Authoritarianism, Liberalism, Tyranny, Dictatorship, Oligarchy, Fascism, Cryonism, Corporatism, all of which are just different words for the same thing, COMMUNISM.

Each word nets the same results: Loss of personal freedom, loss of private property, loss of children.”

And even the soft, “merely suicidal” version of this vile creed of slavery (as opposed to the outright “murder” of communism as Ayn Rand put it) or…

    “Socialism” … IS EXTORTION.

    Period.

After a while, it’s easy to see that it’s obviously really only ever been some might-makes-right gangsters insisting individuals give up their stuff to the gang. And it’s accomplished by blaming one’s victims with slander, then demanding “reparations.” Resentful “Social Justice Warriors” do this.

Nothing less. What’s more, “extortion” (aka coercion; duress; intimidation; harrassment; bullying; ‘activist agitation; blackmail; bribery; and, of course, “terrorism,”) is also even more basically known as … SLAVERY.

And, when enforced (say, by the largest gang, aka “government”) even the most “Free-Market” corporate ethos of “Buy (you) Low,” to “Sell (me) High,” – obviously – becomes slavery. In stead of suing the “evil thieving 1%ers” (aka Makers) in court, where they’d have to produce evidence and risk paying the costs when they lost the case, slanderous SJW’s in stead gang up to form a government which will simply make criminal “laws” to steal from the rich and give to them selves.

The mantra of the LibSoc SJW Prog Democrat Party:

“From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”
–Karl Marx, ‘Critique of the Gotha Program’ (1875)

Karl Marx also said: “Property is theft!”

Obviously, crime causes poverty: under gangster extortion (aka “communism,”) nobody wants to work: The makers don’t work, because they know they will be robbed and have the fruits of their work given to the takers; and the takers won’t work because they know the same thing. Everybody loses.

… except of course for the elites at the top of this same, ages-old pyramid extortive scheme.

PS: Criminals use too many distractive adjectives and synonyms – exactly like islam, at heart, “socialism” is really only: “CRIME!”

Socialists of ALL stripes (“Liberals;” “NsDaP;” “Communists” etc) are no more or less than extortive slanderous victimology-selling gangster criminals.

They tempt lazy low-information voters into supporting them with easy promises of endless “free stuff” and “equality” – which as far as I can see, only ever means “I demand my fair share of Canada’s wealth just for existing, while you still have to earn yours and then give it to me!”

Like all criminals, (“muslims”) “leftists” – and indeed, politicians in general – are defeatist masochists at heart, having no faith in being able to trust anyone else, and so in stead choosing to slander everyone else as being untrustworthy.

Like Muhammad, their defeatism leads to self-fulfilling prophecies, where they attack everyone else, first, then blame their victims for having “made” them attack. Their alibis to excuse their criminal choices are that there is no free will and there were no choices to be made; they pretend to be victims at the mercy of inevitable, “predetermined/predestined” force: victims of society/mere products of their environments, and of course slaves of “allah.”

Masochists pretend to “control” their fears (in stead of trying to learn to recognize and fix mistakes and solve problems by paying attention to their fears) BY causing the same, worst-case scenario, pain-causing problems they fear the most.

(Hence libertine “liberalism,” where they pretend that it’s noble to pretend that fear doesn’t exist, and so always want to “progress” to “freedom” from the fearful pain of self-restraint).

In this way, they hope to avoid the fear of pain, by pre-emptively inflicting that pain on themselves (thus cancelling the auxiliary pain caused by the fear)! See?

But while not ALL criminal negligence is masochism, all masochism IS criminal negligence.

And of course, such criminals are also always all about the subjective double-standards:

What they advocate for in public may be only an attempt to sway everyone ELSE to SUBMIT!

Being selfish, they embrace hypocritical double standards, wanting rights without responsibilities, to never be offended by having their feelings hurt by the painful truth of being accused of their crimes.

And others are expected to have only responsibilities to them – to embrace suicidal masochism as their highest virtue – “TO GO ALONG” (with their criminal lies) “TO GET ALONG” (with the lying criminals)!

“Be a sport! Gimme a pass! We’re all only victims, right?”

In that way alone, (by posing as a “victim”) the Devil pretends he doesn’t exist.

There must be a mental bloc here at Jihad Watch against recognizing the obvious control, via investments and contributions to non-profits and politicians, achieved by the Saudis and other Muslim “moneybags.”

Major Corporations and “hedge funds” are either controlled outright by Muslim investors or suffer Muslim minority investor veto. Even NewsCorp has a major Saudi investor, Prince Alaweed.

Thanks! I guess only the 2 of us can see this! We need to get Robert on board. It is a grave mistake to think our enemies are simply making ideological errors.

Please note that LEFTISTS are controlled by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation and a plethora of other Foundations controlled by the Rockefeller / Big Oil / Saudi camarilla.

In the past, LEFTISTS have opposed Islam! Remember what they said when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan! Justified by the fundamentalist evil of Islam!
