In FrontPage today I discuss how Obama’s closing of Guantanamo shows again that he doesn’t even believe we’re in a war.
Barack Obama announced Tuesday that he was finally fulfilling one of his foremost campaign promises and closing the Guantanamo Bay detention center. Usually the closing of a prison camp for enemy combatants signals the end of the war, and since Obama has never acknowledged that the U.S.’s defense against the global jihad is a war at all, it is fitting that he should end his presidency by closing the camp that so notoriously demonstrated otherwise. And besides, the jihadi leadership ranks need replenishing.
Certainly Obama has replenished them a great deal already. With as many as thirty percent of prisoners freed from Gitmo returning to the jihad, one would think that the Obama administration would pause and consider their plan very carefully before releasing more or transferring them to far less secure prisons inside the United States. That is, administration officials would pause and consider if they had any genuine concern for national security, but it is increasingly clear that they do not. After all, in January, al-Qaeda bomb expert Tariq Mahmoud Ahmed al-Sawah was released from Guantanamo.
What could possibly go wrong? What benefit could jihad terrorists possibly get from a bomb expert? And just last week, Fox News reported: “When Ibrahim al Qosi was released from Guantanamo Bay in 2012, a lawyer for the former Usama bin Laden aide said he looked forward to living a life of peace in his native Sudan. Three years later, Qosi has emerged as a prominent voice of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, appearing in a number of AQAP propaganda videos — including a 50-minute lecture calling for the takeover of Saudi Arabia.”
And on the same day that Obama announced his plan to close Gitmo, a former Gitmo inmate was arrested in Spain for recruiting for the Islamic State. The arrest epitomized just how much Obama’s plan is rooted in Leftist fantasy that would prefer to ignore the global jihad, rather than in reality.
But don’t be concerned. Many of the worst jihadis will be brought to prisons stateside. Again, what could possibly go wrong? Well, even aside from the possibility of escape, there is the likelihood that these jihadis will become heroes in prison, and convert many other prisoners to Islam – including some who will be ready to take up the jihad once they’re released.
None of that matters, however, because as far as Obama is concerned, Guantanamo is already recruiting jihadis by the sheer fact of its existence: “When it becomes clear that something is not working as intended,” he said, “when it does not advance our security, we have to change course. This is not just my opinion, this is the opinion of experts…. [terrorists] use it as propaganda in their efforts to recruit.”
Steve Hayes of the Weekly Standard disputed Obama’s claim: “It is not. You can ask experts from across the political spectrum. It’s not a major recruitment tool for ISIS, [and] for Al Qaeda. The president wants people to believe this because he wants to suggest that there’s some national security imperative to closing it.”
And even if Obama were right, why would that matter? Does Barack Obama seriously think that the jihadis will lay down their arms if we don’t have a detention center they find objectionable? Jihad propaganda indeed often proceeds on the basis of grievance-mongering, as recruiters use the alleged atrocities of the West to spur Muslims into heeding the Qur’an’s many calls for jihad warfare against infidels. But as the Palestinian propaganda machine abundantly illustrates, if jihadis don’t have real grievances they can use to stir up anger against the infidel, they’ll just manufacture some fake ones.
Remember also that a Danish imam ginned up the worldwide riots over the Danish cartoons of Muhammad a few years ago by touring Muslim countries with a dossier of the offending cartoons – including three that were never part of the actual cartoons printed in the Danish newspaper, and were more offensive than any of those. He apparently didn’t think the real cartoons would provoke the rage he wanted, so he felt free to tamper with the evidence. Does Obama really think that the jihadis will ever run out of grievances, or stop making up more if there aren’t any real ones around to exploit?
Obama also said that “keeping this facility open is contrary to our values.” Is enabling the global jihad in accord with our values?

vince says
Robert, He does believe we are in a War. This is what O wants for the world. It’s naive to think any different. O is an enemy of God and wants to see all Christians and non-islamic believers to parish. He is only using islam as a means to an end.

Agreed.

Obama is on the side of America’s enemies, like most of those on the far left. The left is on the side of the Islamists because they have common enemies – Christians and Western Civilizaton. Obama has no loyalty to the USA which is why he has increased the number of Muslim immigrants and he will not deport illegal alien criminals. Last year Obama released 90,000 illegal alien criminals to prey on the American people. You cannot trust a Democrat politician to put the needs of Americans first, even when it comes to national security.

Indeed. I think Dinesh D’Souza got it right when he called Obama an anticolonialist:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/07/AR2010100705485.html
There is no colonialism to speak of, but screw that: America – not to mention the West in general – needs to be brought down to size and pay for crimes done God knows how long ago.
Shane says
Obama has weakened America militarily, morally, and economically, and if we elect a Democrat President, that destruction will continue. No Democrat politican has the best interests of Americans as a high priority.

Exactly, Mirren.
It reminds me of Bill Clinton, when he said “it depends upon what the meaning of the word “is” is.”
Is this in accord with our values? It depends what Obama means by the word “our”.

“Obama also said that “keeping this facility open is contrary to our values.”
Do we see any outcry from ANYWHERE to close this facility? The answer is an emphatic NO.This comes straight from the White House, and only from the White House.
Any time BO opens his mouth to say things like “this is not who we ARE: I experience the insult which brings on frustration and rage. His arrogance and sneering superiority give lie to anything he says about American values, or Western values, for that matter.
One thing, btw, he does not say about Guantanamo prisoners is that once they land in an American court, where they are guaranteed the natural rights described in the U S Constitution, any mediocre defense lawyer will get them released based on the fact that they have been imprisoned for too long without a speedy trial, one of those rights guaranteed them under the US Constitution. Where will these prisoners go? Not back to the countries they came from – those countries won’t take them! So they will be absorbed into American streets, where, under cover of anonymity they can advise and activate jihadist cells. Nice. Get ready, possums!
Cheers!

You bring up an excellent point.
What will the constitutional status of the Gitmo prisoners be once they are incarcerated in US prisons? Will they require a trial by jury, with a guilt verdict only beyond a reasonable doubt? Will they have all the rights of US citizens?
They actually have the status of prisoners of war now, which sets limits to their treatment, but allows indefinite confinement until the war is settled.
gravenimage says
Yes–it is clear Obama wants all these Jihadists released. Even more disturbing: most of them will be released *on American soil*. And since he’ll be out of office by then, no matter who wins in November, it will be someone else’s problem.

I’m sorry to disagree with you.
The people interviewed on the youtube were just totally uninformed and ignorant, but didn’t want to admit it. They would probably have agreed to keep or expand the bill of rights, if the question were put to them that way. Unfortunately, each of those people has a vote equal to somebody who is actually informed.
Ultimately, their apathy may be as damaging as a hostile attitude towards our liberties. But, you could tell what these people really wanted to do more than anything is not to be shown up ad idiots.

This degree of ignorance is deeply disturbing–and not wanting to admit it is even more so. Only one person he spoke to–who he put on camera, in any case–just said he’d have to look into it more.
If they had been asked to vote on the matter right there and then, how many would have demurred?
Also, the Bill of Rights is hardly some obscurely named document–even if these people weren’t familiar with it–concerning enough–you’d think some would think twice at throwing our something just named the Bill of Rights.

Obama once promised to all those willing to listen and remember, that once “winds will start blowing in ugly direction he will be standing there on the side Islam.” Apparently, that time (in Obama’s eyes) arrived. He is standing with them right here. According to him, Americans are steady increasingly “islamophobic” (i.e. becoming aware of dangers posed by Islam) thus they don’t deserve his “protection.” The worse policy for the country, the better for him, Obama. There is no other explanation of his treachery.
gravenimage says
Here’s Obama lauding Muslims and castigating Americans for their “Islamophobia” in the wake of the San Bernardino massacre:
“Muslim Americans are our friends and our neighbors, our co-workers, our sports heroes”.
Never mind that Sayeed Farook and his wife *butchered* 14 of his co-workers at their Christmas party in San Bernardino.
And this is not the only time Muslims have murdered their co-workers. Muslim convert Michael Ford shot shot four of his coworkers and a police officer at a Safeway warehouse in Denver. Muzzammil Hassan beheaded his wife and business partner at the offices of Bridges TV in Buffalo. Major Nidal Malik Hasan gunned down 13 of his co-workers at Ft. Hood. Muslim convert Alton Alexander Nolen–Muslim name Jah’Keem Yisrael–beheaded a coworker at Vaughan Foods in Oklahoma, and attacked and tried to behead another before he was stopped.
And *this* is what Obama is telling the filthy Infidels they should celebrate. *Ugh*.

So….when, exactly, is 9/11 self-confessed Mastermind Khaled Sheikh Mohammad’s trial going to actually start? He was captured in, what, 2003 and already confessed? This is an insult to all Americans that this scumbag is still delaying and stalling his trial with his defense lawyers (what is with JAG anyways? I thought military lawyers were supposed to be quick and efficient during wartime). Americans should ask their leaders why he is STILL ALIVE! It has been 15 years since 9/11. Are the trials still being hamstrung by the DOJ and outside Marxist lawyer groups like Holder’s old firm???
Also, this whole “well….GITMO is a huge recruiting tool, you know [sips latte mochachino chai smugly]” is a crock of patooie. Does Obama get monthly spreadsheets from Jihadi.com with the answers to the questionnaires they give jihadis? [What prompted you to become a jihadi (1) your father (2) your older martyred brother (3) your imam (4) news about our brothers in GITMO (5) continued bullying by your peers and snubbing by girls who forced your fat-ass to become a convert in the first place?] Puleeeeze!

The only war Obama believe he is in is that war on the American people, who he and all other liberals believe they have to take executive action in order to cure the masses of their great stupidity. It eventually becomes killing society sadly.

I think it’s because all too many Americans–even some of the clueless who voted for Obama–will actually be quite disturbed at violent Jihadists being transferred to–and probably freed in–the United States.
So he’s left it until the very end of his second term. I really worry about what else he intends to sneak by at the last minute, as well.
quotha raven says
To Gravenimage – regarding “… I really worry about what else he intends to sneak by at the last minute…”
I’m with you, Graven, however there’s one thing I don’t think we need worry about: I don’t think he’ll be granting a last-minute pardon to Hillary. His justice department is doing a supurbly competent job of insuring that she doesn’t even get indicted for the serious crimes she’s alleged to have committed.
However, it would be prudent to keep an alert eye on what he uses his executive pen to sign with regard to amnesty and/or citizanship for illegal immigrants and a welcome mat for the armies of Muslim men Obama is importing in alarming numbers to settle strategically in the least suspecting communities in the USA.
Cheers!

Keeping combatants in prison is not the answer – especially when we provide them with the Qur’an. They only delve deeper into their ideology and strengthen their ties with each other, as evidenced by Al Bagdahdi in Iraq. Prisoners should be given Bibles instead….and receive classes on the difference between Islam and Christianity. WE should look at prison as being a school of learning. When they have learned whatever languages and courses (history, comparative religions, carpentry) etc. that we prescribe at useful to society, and they ought to be released but permanently surveilled – with a GPS chip and GoPro video cam.

Michele, if you are talking about garden-variety American criminals, then I very much agree. Some *can* be rehabilitated, given tools to overcome addictions and bad habits, given access to education, and taught useful skills. I’ve taught adult literacy to parolees myself.
But there are criminals who are so vicious that such rehabilitation is utterly hopeless, and their release would only endanger the public.
And those in Guantanamo are not Americans, in any case–instead, they are enemy combatants. *Very* few of them have disavowed Jihad. A huge number of them have returned to the battlefield.
Yes–the fact that we have provided them with Qur’ans and winked at Islam makes things *much* worse–but even without this madness, I really doubt that many of them would ideologically reject Islam. After all, why would they listen to the “filthy Infidels”?

As Andrew McCarthy wrote, he is bringing the terrorists from gitmo to the U.S.
He is bringing a host of other moslims to become students of these terrorists. (Not quoting him exactly)
The prisoners may be held in several different prisons or on military bases until…they have a trial by jury or they are released because the government doesn’t want the information they gathered from them, and the means by which they gathered the information, made known in open court. Some of the evidence is not the kind that is usually presented in a criminal court…fingerprints, DNA, hair, fibers, etc. The situation is not likely to be that all are taken to trial, but that some will be released into the U.S. society.
Mr. McCarthy also pointed out that in prison, terrorists become heroes and recruit from their cells. This will increase when they are put in prisons in the U.S. and the new guys from Syria, and other countries being brought in as *refugees* will be trying to rescue the terrorists who are incarcerated…help them escape as the blind rahman says they should do.
o knows full well there is a war. This is one of his final actions to help the terrorists win. It is not *my* values that he speaks of when he says “our values.”
When the terrorists…something like 90 of them are left…and all really bad guys…gain entrance into the country, and they have thousands of young recruits coming in, the war will be right here.
Revelation paints, what some would call a scary or frightening, picture of what is coming. The wild beast, working for satan the devil, is intent on forcing worship of itself.
This is what these terrorists are working for…worship of their false god and false prophet being forced on the rest of us…with death as a result to all who refuse.

Where do you think they are headed Patrick, if they are released to stand trial in a criminal court in the USA, protected by all the rights afforded US citizens under our Constitution?
