Robert Spencer in PJ Media: U.S. Muslim Woman Stops Wearing Hijab, Because She Fears … Republicans

Feb 27, 2016 5:49 pm By Robert Spencer

In PJ Media I discuss the latest exercise in spurious Muslim victimhood:

hajer al-faham

Last week, the Seattle Times published an op-ed by Washington state native and Cornell University doctoral student Hajer al-Faham titled: “Why I Stopped Wearing the Hijab.” Al-Faham was making no statement of a loss of faith in Islam, or of an awakening feminist consciousness. Rather, as she writes:

I felt compelled to stop wearing my hijab out of concern for my safety.

Who has endangered her? Why, Donald Trump, of course. And other GOP “Islamophobic” presidential candidates:

In the midst of the 2016 U.S. presidential campaigns, I have experienced an unprecedented degree of anti-Muslim hostility. The statements made by Donald Trump, in particular, encouraging the shutdown of mosques and the development of a database to track Muslim Americans have direct consequences for people like me.

Al-Faham suggests that Muslims in post-9/11 America live an increasingly precarious existence marked by harassment and discrimination, such that many Muslims conceal their Muslim identity.

She further suggests that the 2016 GOP campaign is somehow even worse in this regard than 9/11:

Even when the challenges of being Muslim and Arab in the United States grew after 9/11, I did not succumb to the pressure to try to pass as non-Muslim and non-Arab.

Who exactly is putting such pressure on her, or any other Muslim? She does not offer examples, or empirical evidence. Nonetheless:

The environment that I and many other Muslims navigate has become increasingly perilous, to the extent that I and other Muslim women have to choose between our safety and our freedom of religion.

And Al-Faham claims that darker-skinned Muslims have it even worse:

While I, setting the hijab aside, am able to pass as non-Muslim or ambiguously ethnic because of my light skin, my father, sisters and others in my community cannot. Their appearance marks them as people of color and targets for violence and discrimination.

If Hajer Al-Faham was really harassed for wearing the hijab, that is a shame. There is no excuse for that kind of behavior. But her fantasy Bull Connor America just isn’t true. Hate crime statistics prove her wrong. And women wearing hijabs are a common sight in American cities now. As I travel, which is quite frequently, and when I am at home, I see women wearing hijabs pretty much every day: in airports, on the streets, in shops, anywhere. No one seems to be bothering them, and they don’t seem to be moving about with the caution and fear that one might expect from people who routinely suffer harassment.

Maybe all the creeps and louts fixate on Hajer Al-Faham in particular. But she is complaining about Republicans: are there really that many racist, bigoted “Islamophobes” at progressive Cornell University? Or in her hometown, the Leftist bastion of Everett, Washington? There are numerous reasons to be skeptical of her claim.

In reality, the evidence shows that a discussion of harassment and concern for one’s safety regarding the hijab needs to focus on what happens to Muslim women who don’t wear it.

Should Aqsa Parvez, whose Muslim father choked her to death with her hijab after she refused to wear it, have just worn the hijab out of concern for her safety?

Then there is Amina Muse Ali, a Christian woman in Somalia whom Muslims murdered because she wasn’t wearing a hijab; and the 40 women who were murdered in Iraq in 2007 for not wearing the hijab.

And Alya Al-Safar, whose Muslim cousin threatened to kill her and harm her family because she stopped wearing the hijab in Britain; and Amira Osman Hamid, who faces whipping in Sudan for refusing to wear the hijab; and an Egyptian girl, also named Amira, who committed suicide after being brutalized for her family for refusing to wear the hijab.

Both Muslim and non-Muslim teachers at the Islamic College of South Australia were told that they had to wear the hijab or be fired. Police shot women in Chechnya with paintballs because they weren’t wearing hijab; other women in Chechnya were threatened by men with automatic rifles for not wearing hijab.

Elementary school teachers in Tunisia were threatened with death for not wearing hijab. Syrian schoolgirls who were forbidden to go to school unless they wore hijab. Hamas has forced Gazan women to wear hijab….

    2002 Mecca girls’ school fire

“On March 11, 2002, a fire at a girls’ school in Mecca, Saudi Arabia killed fifteen people, all young girls. The event was especially notable due to complaints that Saudi Arabia’s “religious police” (aka the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice) stopped schoolgirls from leaving the burning building and hindered rescue workers because the girls were not wearing correct Islamic dress.”

Google: |saudi fire girls hijabs| for many reports.

Later, whitewashed, as expected, by saudi government.

Just think of it, this lunatic woman is a doctoral student and yet displays the mentality and dishonesty of a mental retard. Islam is a sickness and creates a form of mental illness.

Hajer al-Faham is nothing more than a disgraceful liar and fool, but never to worry, the imbecilic prime minister, Justin Trudeau would swallow her nonsense as if gospel.

What I would give to confront her and all the other women that defend wearing their hijabs, burquas, niqabs etc with that terrible list that Robert Spencer has so studiously put together, (makes my blood pressure go up reading it). Would they say ” oh that’s just part of their culture” or ” you can’t believe everything you see in the media”
I hate they way they assume we are all ignorant of these stories. It’s all done to gain more sympathy for them and make us look bad for judging them.

Just that, if you close your browser often. I rarely have to log in (using Firefox on a Windows 10 laptop), and I usually keep my browser open at all times. I do get a “Log In” button even when I’m logged on, though. I only notice that I’m logged out (usually after restarting my PC) when I try t add a comment and get a series of textboxes instead of only one 🙂

I have near zero experience with Safari, so I can’t help you with that, but if I had to guess I’d say it’s some sort of cookie related setting. Do you check the “remember me” option when logging in?

There was another case, from last year IIRC, where some mope in one of the Gulf states prevented lifeguards from rescuing his drowning daughter, because a man would have to touch her. Of course, she drowned.

They call this “honor.” There is and can be no honor in islam. The savage barbarians cannot be treated like civilized human beings. They must be treated with utter brutality. It is the only language they understand.

Yet another mistress of the art of taqiyya. Someone probably asked a person nearby her for the time, rather than ask her. Surely an event of chance like that could be construed as Islamophobia by this astute muslimah?

She is definitely a taqiyya merchant. Most muslimahs don’t even go to mosque.

That is not the reason she stopped wearing that. I was in a Muslim country in July 2014 and the Muslim women the younger ones are only Muslim from the waist up. They wear tight jeans and high heels and most of the time the high heels are fashioned to match their head scarf. And the older women did wear the full black outfit sitting on the streets and they were asking for money… they were using their children… drugging them to sleep to make them appear sick when they were sleeping. They did this for sympathy and to get money. I am not uncompassionate and I gave where I saw the need… However I was angered at this woman. I was angered because she used her child and drug that baby so it would appear sick. And she did it for money and I watched her eye to eye. She knew that I knew.Taqiyya at its lowest.

More self-pity mixed with inaccuracy. So very Islamic.

Meanwhile, in the over fifty majority Muslim nations, non-Muslims are pure second-class citizens across the board (if even this). Yes indeed, America and the West in general are so terrible to Muslims and this must be the reason why Muslims are 1) going back to live in Muslim countries in huge numbers; and 2) why non-Muslims are flocking to Muslim nations in droves because, as we all know, Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance and honors and protects those who are not Muslim.

I’m am so tired of the gigantic farce and lie which is Islam. By now anyone of sense should be. But by all means never forget, any of you, that the real threat to liberty is the Republican Party of the United States. Hey, who could doubt it?

As for Al-Faham herself, she is either delusional or a liar. I vote for the latter. And again can be seen that NO criticism of Islam of any kind can be allowed lest one is treated as a bigot. Meanwhile, just since 9/11 there have been over 27,000 documented Islamic terrorist attacks worldwide and yet Muslims worldwide still claim victimhood, like this silly woman. Yes indeed, the burden which is Islam seems never ending.

I despise Islam and I am proud to say that I despise Islam. A la Luther at Worms in 1521, I can do no other.

Does Hajer al-Faham prefer to be a first class female citizen in America or a second-class female Muslim in Saudi Arabia or Iran wearing a veil?

Does Hajer al-Faham believe that K.33.59 (…wear the veil…so they will not be MOLESTED) is the word of Allah?

If K.33.59 is the word of Allah, who will MOLEST Muslim women if they throw off the veil?

Uh huh. Never mind that the only real violence surrounding the Hijab is pious Muslims murdering girls and women for *not* wearing it.

“Spencer: The Lonesome Death of Aqsa Parvez”

    More:

Al-Faham suggests that Muslims in post-9/11 America live an increasingly precarious existence marked by harassment and discrimination…
    ………………………….

Once again, if one did not know what “9/11” was, one might well assume from this that it was an attack on innocent Muslims by “Islamophobes”–instead of what it was, mass murder of Infidels by pious Jihad terrorists.

    More:

Even when the challenges of being Muslim and Arab in the United States grew after 9/11, I did not succumb to the pressure to try to pass as non-Muslim and non-Arab.

Who exactly is putting such pressure on her, or any other Muslim? She does not offer examples, or empirical evidence.

Of course not–because there aren’t any. You are just supposed to take it on faith that any attempt to keep out violent Jihadists is–somehow–hurting non-violent Muslims. It is utterly false.

But she is complaining about Republicans: are there really that many racist, bigoted “Islamophobes” at progressive Cornell University? Or in her hometown, the Leftist bastion of Everett, Washington?

    Yes–this is especially laughable.

In fact, Republicans are more likely to face discrimination at Cornell than are Hijabis:

“In fact, Republicans are more likey to face discrimination at Cornell than are Hijabis”

I would have to agree with that, being close to the situation. We have to remember that Cornell is an agricultural college, how I am associated with anyone from cornell. My opinion is that throughout its history, cornell has lived off of a lot of welfare from the government, just by being an agricultural school. So, one would think it would naturally be liberal, malleable, putty in the hands of government and its donors. As such, it is likely to be a hothouse to test and grow liberal doctrine.

Anytime I see infiltration of basic essential services, Ie..anything to do with food production, I get concerned like, for example, china buying up millions of acres of wheat fields. In my mind that sets off red flag alerts.

I can’t even imagine a Republican teaching at cornell, given its history and its current make-up.

Well even Liberty University has gone to the dogs, supporting Trump. Whether you like Trump or not, you gotta admit it’s a sorry day when a Christian university supports a sleezy real estate investor and a porn star!

Maybe they think he will support the Christians (and cruz or Rubio won’t??) but the problem is that Trump is a BLANK SLATE and so people are making him into whatever they want him to be.

The fact is: WE DON’T KNOW WHAT HE’LL DO! He has no record. They did the same thing with Barach Obama. So powerful people know they can get him elected to do exactly whatever they want.

Trump says Cruz and Rubio are establishment. Well, I’ll take establishment that have values because I’m certain that Trump is sold out to we don’t even know who–but we’re sure they won’t be nice. He says he is paying for this himself, but what does he want in return? You gotta ask yourself that question and anybody who thinks there is no quid pro quo is an idiot.

How can Christians support a man divorced 4 times, and who is known to have mistresses, and who owns gambling establishments, and who doesn’t have a problem with Marxists whose prime goal is to get rid of Christianity? I think it has to do with one thing, to keep this country from being overrun with non-Christian migrants, like we have been and will continue to be if it isn’t stopped. Nothing else matters to his supporters, and their point is important, because immigration is the main way the Left intends to take over. But, like you said, who says Trump isn’t going to let them in anyway and do all sorts of other things as well, once he gets elected?

In the West the Hijab is becoming a fashion accessory and the Islamic fashion market is estimated to be worth $327bn by 2020. The best brains in the West are working to get a share in this market without realising that Muslim women are rubbing our noses in Islam and flaunting their arrogance in public. You would think that women belonging to a religion responsible for 27,889 deaths by terror since 9/11 would want to disassociate themselves from this evil but are obviously more concerned about how they look to care. .

  19. mach37 says

    Feb 28, 2016 at 5:07 am

If she had any fear it would have been from the stares that her hijab rightfully attracted when she wore it outside a Muslim country. I consider the wearing of a hijab to be flaunting one’s religion and culture where such clothing is out of place; strange. Muslim garb is anachronistic and to non-Muslims appears to be a costume rather than daily-wear clothing.

    • Matt says

      Feb 28, 2016 at 9:13 am

You’re right; the hijab is a political statement as much as anything. Bill Warner has a YouTube video that briefly explains this, and further makes the point that the hijab, unlike “religious” garb from other cultures, tends to have the effect of making others (non-Muslims) feel vaguely uneasy.

I’m using an abridged edition of Towards Understanding the Quran, with commentary by Sayyid Abul Ala Mawdudi, a late mainstream Muslim scholar. His note on that passage basically says that it is permissible for Muslims to conceal their identity while in “enemy” hands so as to help create the impression that they are on the same side–even going so far as to tell people that they are not Muslim. (This also seems to offer support for the IS’s instructions to operatives to hide their Muslim identities so as to better infiltrate and freely move about their opposition’s territory.)

Seeing how Hajer has drawn attention to herself with the op-ed, this might seem like a stretch (and as I noted above, her motivations for not wearing the hijab might be less than pious), but she is far from famous, and as she moves through society, it might not be clear to others in her periphery that she is a Muslim, because she’s conveniently decided to forgo that particular outward expression of her “religion”.

Funny, I didn’t think there WAS A REPUBLICAN in Ithica, NY and I live here.

This Muslime-a is looking for attention from the infidel men and her imam should have something to say about that.

You gotta consider that all this garbage is pure propaganda, and we know from whence propaganda flows.

I felt compelled to stop wearing my hijab out of concern for my safety.

Remember when that woman, Persian Zoroastrian, I believe, started wearing a hijab to try to understand how endemic islamophobia was in American society? Instead of experiencing first-hand a system of entrenched prejudice against muslims, she realized that people were actually nicer to her. Her conclusion? People were trying too hard to compensate for their racism. Because, even if that were true, it doesn’t matter that people acknowledged they have a problem and were actually acting to fix it – all that matters is that Americans are racists. The show must go on, the narrative must be pushed, the science is settled.

There’s just no way to win with professional victims…

In the midst of the 2016 U.S. presidential campaigns, I have experienced an unprecedented degree of anti-Muslim hostility.

Of course, this alleged, vague and unsubstantiated “anti-muslim hostility” has nothing to do with, for example, the San Bernardino shooters – it’s all because of trump suggesting that the US should not take in muslims until they can tell who’s planning on integrating and who’s planning on… well, doing the same as the San Bernardino shooters.

But she is complaining about Republicans: are there really that many racist, bigoted “Islamophobes” at progressive Cornell University? Or in her hometown, the Leftist bastion of Everett, Washington? There are numerous reasons to be skeptical of her claim.

Liberals are the shallowest of people – diversity for them is only skin deep. < Insert ethnic minority here > democrats? Why, come on in, sir, or ma’am, or whatever gender you consider yourself to be, and make yourself at home. < Insert ethnic minority here > republicans? Get out, you Uncle Tom, you race traitor, you filthy scum.

I think they have public safe spaces for people to go to in order to bring attention to themselves by showing the inability to cope with the most mundane things. It has something to do with not being a grownup until you are very old. It’s not a psychological problem anymore to act infantile. In fact, it is a requisite for acceptance on campus. How can you prove to others you can be totally brainwashed by your professors if you are independent? You have to be a Republican in order to be diagnosed with a mental problem.

“It has something to do with not being a grownup until you are very old.”

It’s nice to hear somebody say what I was thinking. Speaking of saying what I was thinking Rebecca, don’t you think that the talk show hosts should now pay for the damage they have done by supporting Trump all these months?

Don’t know if you’re a listener but I consume a lot of talk radio because they vocalize my fears and frustrations, whereas the news covers it up like my cat covers her poop. But Hannity, Rush to a lesser degree but still enough, and that idiot savage who talked down our most conservative candidates, have to pay the price for what they have given us.

We can almost bank on a Clinton for president. And she is so up to her ears in the muslim philosophy that I fear she will be followed by an openly muslim president.

I think the nation is done for and it is very depressing. The only thing I can do is to lash out at the talk show hosts-pathetic, I know. They need to pay the price for tacitly endorsing Trump and his pornstar wife, after talking about saving America for 20 years!!!

I hope their ratings drop so fast that they retire and are replaced by Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. Rotten SOB’s.

        • Rebecca says

          Feb 29, 2016 at 9:46 pm

Yes, talk show hosts are a problem in this election year. Many of them aren’t really Republicans, like Savage, and have attacked the Republican Party for years. The Libertarians are anti-Republican and have been bad mouthing them for years as well. It seems some on the right have the same social agenda as the left, and they really don’t want a Christian in there to ruin all the “progress” they’ve made in messing up the country. One local talk show host called Cruz a dominionist (I think that’s the word) and said he would take us back to 1690 morally. This talk show host is for gambling, legalized dope, and all sorts of sleaze and so is anti-Cruz…he is O.K. with Rubio though…Ann Coulter claims to be conservative and never once supported an actual conservative for president. It’s all very strange.

Now that I think about it, this is not the first Islamic firestorm that has brewed up at Cornell recently.

Makes me wonder if it has not been chosen as a place for islam to have a real influence. The fact that it probably gets money from the government helps too.

I always try to connect the dots and this seems to be making a pattern and I really don’t like to see institutions like Cornell, especially being agricultural, being infiltrated by islamics.

You won’t like the idea of the Saudis buying up American farmland as well as food processing plants, etc. in this country, which they are. And, other Muslims are into all sorts of businesses here as well.

      • Oppressaphobe says

        Feb 28, 2016 at 5:25 pm

Yeah, well that’s scary as hell to me! You bet!

If Americans had a brain they would be scared too, and they would do something about it.

I wondered about the increase in e-coli type infections over the last 10 years. I spoke with CDC about it and they were a bit closed mouth but showed some level of concern.

A country must keep its food source and land or it is doomed. Our farmland is why America became a great power!

Our politicians are obviously corrupt to let such things happen. It started in earnest with the Bush’s, I think, maybe even Reagan. Selling the store to enrich themselves, peddling power and not thinking about the future. They all need to go!

        • Rebecca says

          Feb 28, 2016 at 7:50 pm

I don’t know who it started with, but countries like China and S.A. could not buy land in this nation until fairly recently. Something kept them from it. Many of the companies which make “Made in America” stuff are owned by scary foreign nationals, not friendlies.

  29. Demsci says

    Feb 28, 2016 at 1:28 pm

She claims that showing in public in America that she is a Muslim, has become “perilous”, that she because of that endures enhanced hostility and is fearing for her safety. And she therefore chooses to not show herself as a Muslima, as she used to do. And that constitutes an impairment of her freedom of religion, says she.

She thereby seems to be saying that something is wrong/ unjust with what the republican candidates are saying. This is about the old objection against “hatespeech”, and really an argument for (self)censorship.

My response is that I feel freedom of speech (if it is not incitement to violence) is much more important than total unchecked freedom of religion.

I think freedom of speech, for ALL, cannot wreck democracy, autonomy of the individual, and optimal freedom and search for happiness.

But unlimited freedom of religion CAN wreck that, by supporting censorship and a totalitarian societal system instead of a free democratic system.

And if “bad speech” is not violent, but only causing verbal distress, then she only wants to diminish this in the Democratic World. She does NOT ACKNOWLEDGE the very opposite; that there is unbelievably much “lovespeech”, “supportspeech”, “tolerancespeech”, coming from the same total group of politicians as wherefrom the “hatespeech” is coming. But she gives no acknowledgement of this “good” the “love-speech” and IT’s consequences for Muslims.

In a way I find that comforting; this is a Muslima seemingly unaware of Obama’s “support&tolerance-speech” or if she is, she is not talking about any of it’s consequences, almost as if there are none. Why does she think only the “bad speech” of politicians and not the “good speech” of so many more other politicians have consequences? Or does she not notice the “good nice tolerant behavior so typical of Western Democratic Citizens?

Moreover, as Robert points out, why is she ONLY concerned about Muslims as supposed victims and Kuffars as supposed perps? If she really was concerned about “bad speech’, “hate speech”? THAT is coming in spades FROM Muslims where they have the power TOO!!!

If she deplores it, why only that of the Westerners? Why not saying in the same article that this should be unacceptable to her, from whoever practices it, and wherever??? regardless of faith or ideology?

Therefore; an absurd article IMO. Very good that Robert so expertly exposed it!

She can always opt to go back to her country of origin when she gets through using Republican tax dollars and institutions of learning. There she can put her burka back on and do doctoring for her own people in peace. That would be better than staying here and to put up with Republicans for the rest of her life. I’m glad Robert this up.

Ah, so when she makes her rounds in medical school, she needs to be accompanied by a male relative. She should have that done. They can then protect her from the Republicans.

  31. Oppressaphobe says

    Feb 28, 2016 at 10:45 pm

So, at the end of the day, we here at JW think that the poor little muslima should go to the guidance office at Cornell, ask for counseling for her irrational fear of Republicans. She should explain to the psychiatrist that since she comes from a brutal background, where men rape and kill women at will, in the name of alla of course, she comes to a very safe community in upstate new York and projects her fear of her own countrymen onto Republicans. Her options will be meds., paid for by the state, and/or counseling sessions, perhaps where a republican is brought in to allow her to face her fear and be healed.

Then she will be happily able to re-don her hijab and live happily ever after in America.

Or, she could just go home to her countrymen and save everybody the hassle.

    Bottom line=it’s all a scam.

The VAST MAJORITY of violent attacks upon Muslims in the USA are perpetrated by FANATICAL MUSLIMS. Christians & Jews don’t attack Muslims in the USA. Just as in the Middle East, the greatest danger to Muslims comes from OTHER MUSLIMS.

    • Rebecca says

It is certainly true that most of the attacks on Muslims are by Muslims. There have been honor killings in the U.S. as well as other types of attacks Muslim on Muslim… Malcom X… plus all sorts of others.
