US Navy scolds: Iran didn’t act “professionally and responsibly” after Iranians release video showing captured sailor crying

Feb 11, 2016 11:56 am By Robert Spencer

“Professional mariners understand that it is a duty and obligation to assist other mariners who suffer mechanical problems or who find themselves off track at sea,” Stephens said, according to Navy Times. “We are grateful diplomacy worked at the end of the day, but it would never have come to that had the Iranian maritime forces involved behaved professionally and responsibly.”

Once again, the U.S. sounds like a self-righteous elderly schoolmarm unctuously telling a street thug that his behavior is “inappropriate.” Iran is effectively at war with the U.S. But the U.S. is not at war with Iran. Hence this incongruity.

“US Navy rips Iran after new footage shows captured sailor crying,” Fox News, February 11, 2016:

Iranian state TV showed video Wednesday of one of 10 captured U.S. Navy sailors in tears while the group was being held by the country’s Revolutionary Guard last month.

The footage, which was shown on the official Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, was condemned by the Navy, who called the sailors’ captivity “outrageous and unacceptable.”
A parade float in Tehran mimics the U.S. sailors captured in Iranian waters in January

On Thursday, social media users reported that the sailors’ capture was being re-enacted as part of celebrations marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution that ousted the U.S-backed Shah.

The sailors were held for approximately 16 hours after two small vessels drifted into Iranian territorial waters in the Persian Gulf Jan. 12. The so-called riverine command boats were attempting to travel from Bahrain to Kuwait.

The sailors did not appear to be physically harmed when they were released. However, Hossein Salami, a Revolutionary Guard commander, told state TV last month that the sailors had “started crying” after they were arrested.

Shortly after the sailors’ release, state TV aired a statement from one crew member apologizing for entering Iranian waters and praising their captors for “your hospitality and your assistance.”

In an extensive statement Wednesday, Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, spokesman for Naval Forces Central Command, said the Iranians should have escorted the riverines into international waters and offered assistance for mechanical issues, if necessary.

Earlier footage broadcast by Iran showed the American sailors surrendering to Iranian forces on their knees. Despite thanking his Iranian counterpart, Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, for helping to secure the sailors’ release, Secretary of State John Kerry told Fox News Jan. 28 that the video angered him.

“I was furious about it, and I immediately contacted my counterpart and we indicated our disgust,” Kerry said. “It was very, very unfortunate, inappropriate. And as a former sailor, and member of the military, I was infuriated by it and I expressed that very directly to my counterpart.”

It’s a breech of the protocols of engagement to parade captured troops and use them for propaganda.

This is an intentional provocation. Iran should pay a financial penalty for doing this. If a sailor cried, it would be due the fact he was tortured.

“If a sailor cried, it would be due the fact he was tortured.”
That is possible but is an assumption not a fact.

A more likely assumption is the crew had no clearly defined mission and that the sailor was having guilt of Islamo-phobic thoughts after years of indoctrination by Western media that everything is our fault. Then when good cop / bad cop came around he was a prime candidate for Stockholm syndrome.

Why do I detect a hint of “tit-for-tat” in your tone?

With having a weak, condescending Commander in Chief at the helm of the greatest nation on earth, why would Iran not use this opportune moment to showcase this fact by displaying (according to them) “cowardice” of the American soldiers.

They knew full well that this complacent POTUS would do nothing…. And he never did… So now according to them, the great Satan, US of A has been brought down to it’s knees and is a laughing stock of the whole pathetic mentally depraved Islamic world.

How could both boats malfunction? Aren’t they together as a sort of “buddy system”? Perhaps either they were in international waters or intentionally in Iranian waters? My guess is they were in international waters, which is why their GPS and phones were taken, right?
Does anyone have any insight into what actually happened here?

    • Davegreybeard says

      Feb 11, 2016 at 2:37 pm

      @AnneCrockett
“Does anyone have any insight into what actually happened here?”

      Just a guess, try this:

The boats were in international waters and there was no “malfunction” on either boat. The Iranians saw an opportunity to capture an exposed element of the U.S. Navy, using high speed military water craft. They have been seen training with these boats for years, for just such an occasion.

Supporting units of the U.S. Military, that ordinarily would have provided back up, were ordered to “stand down” to avoid an “International Incident” and thereby embarrass Obama, who was in the process of delivering his “State of the Union Speech.”

The State Dept. was ordered into immediate action to offer whatever the Iranians wanted, so that sailors would be released in a timely manner, so as to avoid further embarrassment to Obama. I do not believe all that was given to Iran, to facilitate that release is public knowledge at present.

The Iranians find all this hilarious, and are getting maximum mileage out of it by continuing to poke, sneer at, and insult the stupid Kuffar, Obama and “The Great Satan.” There will be more to come, and you can take that to the bank.

      Sound about right?

The difference is that the Benghazi guys were not all active military and did not have to follow “high seas” orders like these sailors. My guess is these sailors were “forced” in their debriefings to sign some type of non-disclosure papers with hefty penalties attached.

      Feb 11, 2016 at 7:40 pm

      Here’s what happened Anne,

The two boats were enroute from point A to point B with a refueling rendezvous in between.

They were not on a combat patrol so their heavy weapons were stowed below. Note the empty gun racks in the photos. They would have had M4s as security weapons but those would have been no match against the Iranian gun boats who were on a combat patrol and armed appropriately.

They were behind schedule and deviated from their navigational plan by taking a shortcut through Iranian waters. Subsequently one of the boats had an engineering casualty do to the engine overheating, that is why it was able to run the next day. Both boats stopped to sort it out. That is when the Iranians pounced. Those sailors were not in a combat posture nor did they have proper security set. Fact is, they were caught with their pants down.

The Iranians would take their Satellite phone and GPS for intel purposes. To see where they have been and where they were going. Also, to see who they have been talking to.

It is a mariners duty to render assistance at sea to those at risk of being lost at sea, but the conduct of the Iranians is childish and shows a lack of nobility and dignity.

Tears of frustration? I’m not going to judge that sailor.

… taking a shortcut through Iranian waters.

Disagree on this part. Most likely, the riverines remained will clear of Iranian waters at all times. They were well aware of the dangers, and they were also aware that they were being tracked by U.S. naval radar.

Most likely, the sailors were expressly instructed by the State Department to “cop” to the trespass.

As others have commented, the Iranians were likely offered MUCH more substantial concessions under direct orders from Barry Obama. The interesting thing is – how does this incident play into the larger conflict between the Sunnis and Shiite Iran?

        • MKG says

          Feb 12, 2016 at 1:00 pm

I respectfully disagree on the bases that RADAR is a line of sight tool that can not see beyond the curvature of the earth under normal atmospheric conditions. The range of a suface search RADAR is determined by taking the square root of the antenna height and multiplying that by 1.22. That will give you the range in nautical miles. Unless a warship was steaming in company with the boats, they would not have been tracked by RADAR. If that were the case the boats would have been warned away from danger.

In addition I seriously doubt the Iranians would allow the state department to contact our sailors and advise them of anything that could help their situation.
          Have a nice day.

        • Custos Custodum says

          Feb 12, 2016 at 1:25 pm

MKG – correct as regards conventional radar (taking height in feet). However, the U.S. Navy would likely have had access to more sophisticated tracking methods including airborne radar, (limited) over-the-horizon radar, radio direction finding, etc.

The idea that the two boats “lost their way” does not seem credible.

As to whether or not the Iran’s Islamic Guards permitted some (perhaps one-way?) communications from the State Department to the sailors, Iran would have made that decision purely in terms of whether any such communication was likely to improve Iran’s position.

One does not get the impression that the commander was worrying about spending years in the brig upon his return, so he probably felt secure enough in his actions, most likely because he had received express instructions at some point.

        • MKG says

          Feb 12, 2016 at 2:35 pm

The idea that the two boats “LOST their way” does not seem credible.

As a mariner and a navigator I concure 100%. But the question still remains, “how or why did they stray from their planned navigational route?” It has been acknowledged they had strayed and were in fact in Iranian waters. That is the primary focus on the government’s investigation into this incident.

Kudos to your brave GI father, E Ward–I had a friend whose father also helped liberate Dachau. He told harrowing stories.

Both my mother and my aunt as young women saw service in the British army during WWII.

They did not see combat, of course, but both came under fire–my aunt drove supply trucks between London and the mouth of the Thames, and the lines were frequently bombed and strafed. My mother worked at the Ministry of Information, and her building took a direct hit by a bomb during the London Blitz. If it hadn’t been a dud I would not be writing this.

That our troops are now getting so little support from the very authorities who deploy them is grotesque–and does not bode well for our defending against Jihad.

Why is our Navy still pretending that Iran *aided* our sailors–instead of just kidnapping them?

Judging by the demeanor of the spokesman (commander?) of the group, they were instructed by our State Department to cop to the charge of intruding into Iranian waters. In point of fact, it is extremely unlikely that they did so unless specifically ordered. The geography of the Persian Gulf in this area is very simple, and it is easy to stay clear of Iranian water without resort to GPS or other high tech means.

What is surprising is why Obama has seemed desperate to offer concession after concession to Iran for a “deal” that was already hugely advantageous for them (and impossible for Iran to decline given its failing economy).

Victor Davis Hanson has offered the theory that Obama is always on the side of self-declared “revolutionaries” such as the ayatollahs. Obama was about 18 (according to his official birth year of 1961) when the ayatollahs seized control of Iran in 1979 after a more broad-based revolution ousting the shah. Some interesting details (including the “Cinema Rex Fire” incident) are (still) on Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_Revolution#Renewed_protests

Oh dear.Kerry displeased is really going to frighten any 3 year old but no iranian comander or soldier would ever take that plastic face as angry unless accompanied by a sign that said this uis my mad/angry face .

Kerry is an idiot and a turncoat. Anyone who was alive and aware when he ran for President knows his history. His basic talent isn’t diplomacy but marrying super-rich women. I think Teresa is unwell, so maybe he’s looking again.

I doubt he could even frighten a three-year-old. Maybe a mouse, though.

You know it. I remember him as a liar and a traitor before he entered politics. Nothing has changed, except that he is surrounded by like company in this Administration.

Me thinks there is a lot of BS and military inexperience. Whenever I went on non-combat missions in area of suspected danger I/we were always armed. Not doing so is ridiculous. We’re talking about military personnel here, not baggers at the grocery store. Either they were sacrificial or incompetent or both. Where was the command officer or NCO at the time?MKG I’m glad that you have first hand knowledge of these incidents. However my BS meter is twitching too. If they had any type of surveillance gear they would have been armed my last assignment was with ew aircraft. We had to destroy the equipment if capture was imminent.

Timothius, your EW aircraft has a very different mission. Those boats do not carry such “sensitive ” equipment. Other than HF radios loaded with crypto they don’t need much else to accomplish their mission. Surveillance is not their primary objective.

Their detachment Officer In Charge is the lieutenant who was appologizing on camera.

I totally agree with you about being armed and ready while deployed in your AO.

Military inexperience. If I want to know something about naval aviation I would ask a sailor who wears brown shoes. I wear black shoes. Maybe you should take your BS meter to the instrument shop and get it calibrated. Then have a great navy day shipmate.

In an extensive statement Wednesday, Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, spokesman for Naval Forces Central Command, said the Iranians should have escorted the riverines into international waters and offered assistance for mechanical issues, if necessary.

Interesting sentence in the article quoted above. Depending on how one parses this, it could mean:

… the Iranians should have escorted the riverines into international waters if necessary… i.e. implying that “escorting” the riverines “into international waters” was NOT, in fact, “necessary” in this case.
