Fourteen civilians and two soldiers have been killed in the Ivory Coast beach resort of Grand Bassam when gunmen stormed the popular weekend retreat and opened fire, President Alassane Ouattara says.
“Six attackers came onto the beach in Bassam this afternoon … We have 14 civilians and two special forces soldiers who were unfortunately killed,” Ouattara said during a visit to the site. The six attackers were also killed, he said.
The North African branch of al-Qaeda, meanwhile, claimed responsibility for the attack, according to a monitoring group.
Interior Minister Hamed Bakayoko earlier said that security forces had “neutralised” the attackers.
“Three hotels in Grand Bassam were attacked this Sunday by armed men. Security and defence forces intervened immediately and were able to neutralise six terrorists. The clean-up operation is under way,” he said on state television.”
An officer from the national police earlier said that at least 12 people, including four Europeans, were killed as gunmen opened fire on beachgoers.
“For the moment, we have a total of 12 dead, including four Europeans … We don’t know yet if there are others. We are doing clean-up operations right now,” the officer told security forces during a briefing attended by a Reuters reporter after Sunday’s attack.
Grand Bassam is a weekend retreat for Abidjan residents about 40km east of the commercial capital Abidjan. Its beaches, bars and hotels are popular with Westerners….
