Obama wants to take out Assad. The Islamic State would be the chief beneficiary of that. The Russians are doing what the U.S. should be doing. But there is no chance of that in the age of Obama.
“Syria civil war: Assad hails Palmyra recapture from IS,” BBC, March 27, 2016:
President Bashar al-Assad has hailed the recapture of Palmyra from so-called Islamic State (IS) as an “important achievement” in the “war on terrorism”.
A monitoring group has backed the Syrian government’s claim that the city was recaptured overnight by the army.
Military sources say the Syrian army now has “full control”. It had been gaining ground for several days, supported by Russian air strikes.
President Assad said this showed the success of the army’s strategy.
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Mr Assad, a Kremlin spokesman said.
The Kremlin said President Assad knew the Palmyra operation “would have been impossible without Russia’s support”….

Let’s not forget, however, that this is also a sectarian victory for Iran. What the West should start to do better from a strategic point of view is play the Saudis and Iranians off one another so they are maintained in a continuous state of enmity, leading to their mutual impoverishment and making them too preoccupied to aim their sights at the West, Israel included.
Angemon says
Indeed. It’s not like the West needs to foster any enmity between them to begin with.

This is true, Joe. There is no good here–just bad and worse. This generally falls into the first category. So can all say, “yay”.

Great news even if BBC is the source.
This is instantly recognized as by BBC by the attribution “(so-called)” Islamic State (IS).
BBC also uses “(Self-Styled)” and “(Self-Professed)” as their nothing to do with Islam modifiers.
Jovial Joe says
Yes, we’ll no we’re making progress when, like those prisoners in Belmarsh, the muslim residents are referred to as ‘So-called British citizens’.
greyhound fancier says
So, the Pope would be a “self-professed” Catholic? and the “so-called” Archbishop of Canterbury a “self-professed” Anglican?

Those two ecclesiastical gentlemen are not pretending to be what they are. Jihadists pretend to be British while they tell all their friends they have no loyalty to UK.
Their British citizenship, while legally valid, is a sham…a mere meal ticket.

Oh dear Obama will be most unhappy, yet again he has been shown to be weak and ineffectual by Putin, who has consistently used his armed forces effectively to help Assads forces take on and drive back ISIS, whilst Obama does nothing other than make misleading statements and prevents US forces from actually destroying ISIS positions.
Obama is a pathetic CIC his actions have allowed ISIS to grow and prosper whilst he lies to the world telling them that ISIS is not Islamic and that “the future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam”
So long as Obama gives tacit support to Islamic jihad the west will never be safe The west needs to come down hard and brutally on ALL supporter of Islamic jihad and Sharia The Hague and Geneva conventions should be suspended and our militaries allowed to use whatever means they deem fit to destroy the enemy wherever they are found.
Neighbourhoods like Molenbeek in Belgium should be surrounded and the inhabitants rounded up and those individuals who are of interest should be detained, stuff their “human rights” the native Europeans have a right to live their lives free from the scourge of Islam and that right trumps the whining victimhood drivel of Muslims.
Assad should receive ALL the support he needs to bring stability to Syria and drive out those who seek to destroy what was once one of the more secular nations in the region.

Obama is probably going to try and make himself feel better by dancing the tango again.
I don’t think what he did in Argentina could actually be called dancing, he looked stiff and awkward
And It looked to me like the Argentinian lady was leading – not surprising though, when has Obama ever done any real leading ?
I bet Putin can dance the tango and look like a man who knows what he’s doing.
Note: I was in a performing dance group for 8 years.

Some Obama-friendly Republican leaders support taking out Assad in behalf of Islamic State. John McCain comes to mind. Who else? Senators Kelly Ayotte, Lindsey Graham (McCain and Graham met with the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi in Egypt) Marco Rubio.

Assad should stay. He is no saint, but he is a secular leader. And we’ve seen what happens when secular leaders in the ME get ousted – case in point ISIS.
No civilized people should give any thought to what Saudi Arabia, Qatar or jive Turkey want in the geopolitical realm. And they should be critical of what the US and EU want as well. For all practical purposes, NATO is Estados Unidos.
And just because 1.5 billion believe something does not make it true. Truth is not a dmocratic process. Islamic sources say the world is flat, like a pizza, and the sun orbits around earth, and women make sperm in their ribs. And 1.5 billion Muslims believe Islam to be perfect and true – you can’t get wrong-er than that.
Jovial Joe says
Actually it’s the Western elites who are more wronger than that since they should know better than to allow this ignorance to infest our lands!

Assad, in the competition of Evil Islamic Dictators, is not in the league of Olympic medal winners Moammar Kaddafi or Saddam Hussein.
The reason Turkey and Saudi Arabia supported ISIS is because they wished to create a pipeline through Syria and Turkey into Europe and cut out the Alawites.
Putin doesn’t want a pipeline into Europe, because it would bankrupt Russia by making its oil worthless.
maghan says
No, it’s a gas pipeline. Gaddafi was the right man to keep the vile Islamists at bay. Spare the rod, spoil the Islamist child.
Arcesilaus says
What a wonderful Easter morning to see great news such as this! I hope the freed people are thankful for a secular leader! Cheers to the Syrian military, may they crush ISIS at their HQs so they may no longer make videos and start cells abroad!

Assad should pay the price for his crimes someday – but what was set to replace him would have been much worse. would have been another Islamofascist country. As bad as Assad was Syria was a beautiful country where the people had somewhat normal lives – lives way better than any life under Islamofascists like in Iran where women are stoned to death, gays are hung, and all the other lovely Islamist benefits of that sorry society. Iran is a terrorist state promoting terrorism world wide.
mortimer says
All Arab dictators are villains, scoundrels and thieves, one differing from the other merely in degree and in their ability to cover up their heinous crimes.
But because Islam is incompatible with democracy and pluralism, there is no alternative in Muslim countries to dictatorship.
Avenger says
Dwight, what governing entity could keep Syria from civil war other than to have a strongman like Assad? He kept the peace, new Christian churches were being built, the economy was growing and unlike his father he invaded no one. I don’t think a Jimmy Carter type ruler would last very long in the ME.
The Sunni Syrian population saw the Arab Spring as an opportunity to overthrow the legitimate government in Damascus and install their own Sunni despot or maybe even go full Sunni Sharia. It turned into a civil war that pitted three Sunni superpowers (Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar) along with their US and EU allies, against the legitimate government of Syria, backed by Iran and Russia.
I also differ from Mortimer who thinks that the Sauds and Turkey want Alawites gone for construction of a fuel pipeline. I believe they want to depose Assad for geopolitical gain –
1) Further isolate Shia Iran.
2) Remove all Russian influence and presence.
3) Extermination (genocide) of Alawites, Shiites, Christians, Yashidis and Kurds.
4) Gain complete control of Lebanon.
5) Manipulate lucrative oil exports too Turkey.
6) Gain favor from the USA and EU.
Obama’s inaction actually saved Assad for now. Obama could have clobbered Syria after the fake gas attacks on rebel civilian positions but hesitated, though he was later belittled by John McCain, Lindsey Graham and other pro war RINOs.
I’m not sure who I loathe more, the Obama Administration or these fake Christian Conservatives.

What a shame Palmyra wasn’t recaptured about this time last year when all the ancient pre Islam structures were still standing. Thanks again to Islam for trying to erase and rewrite the world’s history.
Larry A. Singleton says
Your comment is why Jihad Watch needs a “thumbs up” button. I practically cheered when I saw “Palmrya” and “recaptured”. It just made me sick to my stomach to see how they were destroying the history I’d read about in my issues of Biblical Archaeology and other resources. How our government just sat by and watched all this happen. And is still just sitting on its ass while this modern day Nazis take over whole countries and enact and encourage acts of terror. Including in my hometown of Berdoo.
The only word for this administration is Treason. Pure, simple treason.
Troybeam says

Where should Assad’s loyalty lie moving forward? Not with the other Arab or Persian allies. Most of the Arabs helped to destroy his regime. And the Persians, who are his ally, were ineffective in the fight against his enemies. The whole lot in the Middle East are worthless as allies. Where should Assad’s loyal lie? The Russians so far have breathed new life into his regime and have given him hope of retaking the country. So, who deserve his loyalty: the Russians or his fellow Middle Easterners? The latter seem to be a worthless lot.
I could use the same reasoning for Iraq. Unfortunately for Iraq, they have no worthy ally? All their Middle Eastern allies have been shown to be inadequate. In addition, analogous to the Russian giant in Syria, unfortunate Iraq has a giant ally in the guise of the USA, less worthy than the Russian giant.
