Brown U: Trans rights activist cancels Hillel speech after anti-Israel protests

Mar 19, 2016 11:31 am By Robert Spencer

Are Americans going to consent placidly to the takeover of our nation’s universities and the extinguishing of our freedom of speech by these neo-Nazis? The freedom of speech is only dimly understood and under attack everywhere. If Brown University were still a university in any genuine sense of the word, it would rebuke the anti-Israel thugs and exhort Mock to go ahead with her speech at Hillel. But it isn’t, and hardly any of the other institutions that bear that label are worthy of it, either.

Janet Mock

“Black Trans Rights Activist Cancels Speech at Brown Hillel after Anti-Israel Protests,” by Aiden Pink, The Tower, March 16, 2016:

Transgender rights activist and bestselling author Janet Mock has cancelled her scheduled speech at Brown University’s Hillel after coming under criticism from campus pro-Palestinian activists for appearing at the school’s Jewish student center.

Mock, an African-American trans woman, was scheduled to speak on Monday at Brown/RISD Hillel as part of a year-long series of lectures on LGBT rights organized by the Jewish student group Moral Voices.

But her decision to speak there was criticized by some students, who argued in a petition that it was inappropriate for her to appear at Hillel because the group “has consistently defended and even advocated for the Israeli state’s policies of occupation and racial apartheid.” The petition also accused Hillel of being complicit in “pinkwashing,” or promoting Israel’s positive record on LGBT rights to distract from its mistreatment of Palestinians. The petition clarified that they were not against Mock speaking on campus, so long as she did not do so at Hillel.

Moral Voices leaders criticized the drive for Mock to cancel, noting that the group takes no stance on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. They also questioned the broader implications of the cancellation campaign:

This petition does, however, make us ask: given that Hillel is the center for Jewish life on this campus — with a mandate to support the interests and meet the needs of a very diverse constituency of Jewish students on College Hill (ranging widely in their political, religious, and cultural inclinations) — does simply engaging in a Jewish space render one unfit to do justice work?

Nonetheless, Mock decided to cancel her appearance. Her representatives told Moral Voices organizers, who had been working to secure her appearance on campus for almost a year, that “the focus of Janet’s work was lost leading up to the proposed event, and her visit was received with controversy and resistance rather than open dialogue and discussion about the issues closest to Janet’s work in movements for trans liberation, racial justice and intersectional feminism.”

The idea that Hillel’s sponsorship of groups that support Israel makes it inappropriate for activists to speak there on unrelated topics was heavily criticized in a counter-petition released after the cancellation was announced. “The fact that Hillel is home to groups engaged in discussion on Israel and Palestine does not make it acceptable for students on campus to oppose Hillel events that are entirely unrelated to Israel,” it said. “Accusations that all events organized by Jewish groups, even those with no Israel-related stances or affiliations (such as Moral Voices), are part of some nefarious Israeli propaganda machine echo familiar tropes of anti-Semitism.”…

Judging by the stuff going on in Brown University, it is probably a good idea to stay out of there. Students are actually neglecting their studies because in their priorities political questions come first. It is all about Gaza and Israel. There is a Jihad going on.

Now ,what would all of these “institutions of higher learning” do in that case?
      Expel it’s student body?
      OR,
Stop their institutions being training grounds and indoctrination centers for Ant-American/Anti-Semitic fouled up brain-dead robots?
And if the taxpayer funded state universities persist in coddling TREASONOUS Seditionists, including tenured America-Hating”” academics”,then it;s time for State Legislative action and/or an Election referendum vote on subsidizind Treason on campus

Transgender rights activist and bestselling author Janet Mock has cancelled her scheduled speech at Brown University’s Hillel after coming under criticism from campus pro-Palestinian activists for appearing at the school’s Jewish student center.

Ack! So many low-hanging fruits! Must… resist… urge… OK, just one: who do these Brown people think they are to shut down a (Mock) woman in behalf of the anti-gay, anti-trans stone-chuckers?

But her decision to speak there was criticized by some students, who argued in a petition that it was inappropriate for her to appear at Hillel because the group “has consistently defended and even advocated for the Israeli state’s policies of occupation and racial apartheid.”

What the f*** do these alleged “occupations” and “racial apartheid” have to do with trans-activism? Nothing, of course – divide and conquer, textbook Alinsky.

The petition also accused Hillel of being complicit in “pinkwashing,” or promoting Israel’s positive record on LGBT rights to distract from its mistreatment of Palestinians.

A more accurate description would be pro-“Palestinians” using the imaginary mistreatment of “Palestinians” by Israel to whitewash their treatment of LGBT “Palestinians”.

The petition clarified that they were not against Mock speaking on campus, so long as she did not do so at Hillel.

“No, I’m not anti-Semite, I’m just anti-Zionist and anti-Israeli. I also believe all and every Jew is Israeli and Zionist – that’s probably what’s confusing you, but I assure you I’m not anti-Semite”.

Did the pro-“Palestinian” group offer a different place for her to speak? Of course not. That’s how flimsy that excuse is.

Janet’s work in movements for trans liberation, racial justice and intersectional feminism.”

So many buzzwords it seems I’m standing inside a beehive or something… What takes priority in that? Trans-liberation, racial justice or intersectional feminism? Are white feminist trannies higher or lower on that scale than black trannies? Or black feminist trannies? Or black feminists?

    You can’t serve three masters.

“Accusations that all events organized by Jewish groups, even those with no Israel-related stances or affiliations (such as Moral Voices), are part of some nefarious Israeli propaganda machine echo familiar tropes of anti-Semitism.”…

    Damn right.

I have two comments for you.

When you deconstruct (cultural Marxist term) leftist doctrine rationally, it is easy to make mishmash of their positions. The Black Lives Matter don’t really care about black lives, but about black racial identity and incidentally, political power for black hucksters. The feminists don’t really care about women, but about promoting cultural Marxism under the feminist banner. It’s becoming somewhat difficult to believe that the liberal Jewish leaders really care about Jews, since they promote groups and positions that are going to suppress the freedom to be openly Jewish.

The second comment is that, as you are aware, the doctrinaire leftists really don’t care about the logic, or lack thereof, of their positions. Theirs is a religious fervor, taking religious in a pejorative sense. I mean nothing against the truly religious readers who from my experience, are more than happy to engage in a reasonable and factual discussion.

The people who support Hillary will do so in spite of her pathological lying and her felonious treatment of classified secrets. They simply don’t care. Assuming you can get them to discuss the issue with you at all, they will give a mindless reply like “all the politicians are like that”. So, treating leftist actions rationally is not going to affect the people who support. But, it’s a nice exercise in logic anyway.

With all due respect, this illustrates the suicidal stance of organized liberal Judaism. They support Israel, but align themselves with the hard-left groups and hard-left positions that demonize Israel and give political support to the international boycott movement that intends to cripple and destroy Israel.

The hard-left Jewish establishment also supports the immigration of Muslims, who will without question intensify physical attacks on Jewish people and Jewish buildings.

Why is Hillel chasing after Janet Mock, who dumped them under the bus at the first whiff of politically correct criticism? Because their desire to participate in the hard-left, politically-correct spiritual movement trumps their sense of survival and reason. The liberal Jews will likely vote in droves for Hillary Clinton in the general election, assuming she manages to avoid indictment until then.

I’m an atheist with a Jewish background that I remember fondly, and it is painful to see them acting so suicidally.

        Haha,

We still have a lot in common, apparently.

But don’t worry about what they call you. The president of the Union for Reform Judaism, probably the largest Jewish organization in the US, gave a speech at the Islamic Society of North America, a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.

        http://www.isna.net/children-of-abraham.html

Such is the suicidal orientation of the Jewish Community.

Speaking of that, I wait in vain to join a protest against the treatment of Christians in Muslim and ISIS-controlled territories in Dallas. The Christian churches here also show no interest in demonstrations.

Don’t paint everyone with the same brush. I am a foreigner, I went to an American graduate school and am always grateful for what America and it’s people have done for me.

The problem in American university system is that tenure makes professors lazy. Perched upon their ivory towers, these formidable intellects lose touch with reality — i.e. the industry — and conceive crazed doctrines in disciplines whose very titles are baffling to one’s mind.

Fix that system and the entire left leaning infrastructure will collapse. Universities are meant to train students to get a job and not to indoctrinate them in politics and make drones out of them.

      • ainu888 says

        Mar 19, 2016 at 3:56 pm

There is an entire industry built around guilt-whoring and and victimhood-seeking. Obviously, it’s easy to do that when one has tenure for life and one is subsidized by the tax-payer.

The trouble is, the agenda of guilt is driven by: Islamofascist towel-heads; marxist doctrinaires who would have no place to regroup after their defeat in the real world, if the subsidized university did not exist; and colored people who are still living in the past and just don’t let go because they would have to admit their own failures the moment they stop blaming others.

Professional victims, all of them. And you subsidize them.

And then, there are Chinese and Indian graduate students, slaving away at minimum wage, in Engineering, Math, Biotech and medical departments making the world better.

Who is paying for this massive pro-arab lobby in the American university system? Would your children have spare money if they went to American universities so they engage in anti-Israel activity? Of course not, because they would be debt-straddled and trying to make sure they get a job.

So, how can these pro-arab students afford this luxury, i.e. relentless political activity in the most expensive and high quality university system in the world? Follow the money.

I used to be a teaching assistant. Most of my American students used to juggle two jobs and their studies and that was hard enough. They did not care about all this stuff.

And yet, when you went to the student center, we always saw someone in Hijab socializing or writing ten page articles about faith. Did they not worry about their education? What set them apart? Were they that affluent ? Or was someone paying for them?

I had a Hilel on my campus too. And they were quiet. They conducted social activities and undertook trips to Israel. But I never once saw them, and they never thrust themselves in other peoples’ faces.

But then, you have the typical Palestinian mobs, many of these “students” look like they’re military type, and are sharp. Not your typical student.

They draw legitimacy from the fact that they speak from American universities. From *your* universities, that you subsidize with your tax money.

And I was one of those students who did not care about the “plight” of Muslims or any other minority for that matter. I did care about getting good grades (which I did), worked a part-time job, did volunteer work and prepare for my career – what most serious college students do.

As for the “plighters” – well, they should maybe grow up a little bit and learn to take care of themselves.

I had a man who was my student. He worked full time. Then, he put himself through college. There was another lady, who worked at Walmart four days a week. Or, a girl who stayed up till 2AM solving problems in engineering to ace her grades.

This was the America I wanted to admire.

Not those women who spent all their time writing ten page articles glorifying the hijab. Or any faith for that matter. You come to university, you do what you came to do, you win my esteem.

At the end of the semester, we spent 18 hours at a stretch in problem solving sessions to improve the grades of the students. Sometimes we forgot to eat. My blood sugars would fall since I was on medication. Sometimes my head would spin.

But I kept quiet. This was my way of helping these youngsters begin their life.

This was the America I wanted to admire. Not those guilt-pimps.

        Ainu888,

You’re right on concerning university tenure. The professors use tenure so they can indulge their idiosyncrasies and not worry about the effect they have on other people, professors and students.

They also use tenure to perpetuate their own ideas. Most universities have an “up or out” rule, by which a professor has to become tenured in a set number of years, or he must leave that university. Tenure is generally granted by the senior professors, so there is tremendous pressure to conform to their ideas. So much for academic freedom.

I disagree with you somewhat in your assertion that the purpose of universities is to prepare the students for jobs. That’s one of the purposes, but another purpose is to create and preserve knowledge. Sometimes the two purposes are in conflict, as when you have an especially creative, productive professor who is a miserable instructor.

The question is, with the present corruption of the universities, do they now serve either purpose? Affirmative action has lowered the standards of both professors and students, and with the presence of mediocre students and the pressure to pass the lower-skilled minorities, the quality of instruction has deteriorated.

At the same time, the creation of academic fields of study which, as you put it, “crazed doctrines in disciplines whose very titles are baffling to one’s mind.” A graduate in cross-cultural, trans-gender, or feminist studies, or “social justice” is essentially unemployable. I met a very nice, hard-working girl student at a very good university who was majoring in “social justice”. Nobody told her that she was setting herself up for failure. Or, the best outcome was, as she was bright, personable, and hard-working, she would have a successful career in spite of losing four years as a student and being saddled with a tremendous debt.

In my opinion, the universities have lost their purpose: they are no longer centers of creative thought, knowledge advancement, or student preparation. The technology centers of science, engineering, and computer science are the least corrupted and most productive, since you can’t really fake these fields of knowledge. But, the greatest advances are presently made in industry-affiliated research centers.

I agree with you completely on the need to eliminate tenure altogether. I would also advocate doing away with the requirement for a university degree for employment. There are academic unions, such as the Association of University Professors, and various certification bodies, that maintain the pressure on university on physical facilities (such as obsolete libraries) and on the maintenance of tenure. A university that loses certification can no longer grant degrees that meet job-related degree requirements. What the requirement for university certification does is the classical effect of the “regulatory” agency: pump up the cost of entering the market so the small, entrepreneurial competition is squeezed out.

Easy, ainu. Not all of us are knocking foreign students in US universities! I’ve had a lot of friends in that category, some of whom stayed to help us improve our country; some of whom went home to build their own. I always counted the opportunity to meet lots of people from much of the world a valuable part of my higher education.

I’m also of the mind that RonaldB has noticed something about what our universities have become. Wish I had time to write up a few more of my ideas as blogs or other such things, and become part of the small, entrepreneurial opposition. I see so much utter blather on the history of religion (especially Christianity and the Bible) that I think there might be room for someone to set the record straight. Unfortunately, tertiary education has also become rather bureaucracy-ridden, and we who teach in it are often subject to extra meetings, exercises, and the like that stink of someone in the county seat, state capital, or Washington writing regulations to justify his continued employment…

The most sacred thing is the victim from a “marginalized group” and any deviation is treated as blasphemy. Recently, campuses have added muslim to the list of “marginalized groups”. The idea has developed that if you say something that offends someone, they will be traumatized and damaged and become victims. The conservatives are bad and everyone is onboard on fighting conservatives. If you graduated from a university before 2013, you don’t really know what’s going on.
