Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Hugh Fitzgerald: Christopher Dickey and “Anti-Muslim Hysteria”

Mar 28, 2016 7:22 pm By Hugh Fitzgerald

christopher_dickey

After the latest attacks in Brussels, Christopher Dickey, a senior American journalist based in Paris, was alarmed. What alarmed him was not the homicidal hatred of Muslim terrorists or the Islamic State’s demonstrated ability to wreak havoc in yet another European capital. No, he was worried that “rampant Islamophobia” would only increase because of this attack, and “make it more and more difficult for Muslims and Arabs to integrate into European society. The level of suspicion is very high, and that translates into xenophobic politics. The kind of thing we see with Geert Wilders in the Netherlands, or Marine Le Pen in France, or the really, really fascist Nazi parties in… Greece. So I think all of that translates into a situation of more and more of a cultural divide. Harder and harder to integrate people. And then that, of course, will be used for more recruiting by the jihadists.”

It’s a longstanding concern for Dickey. After the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, he worried that “the right-wing politicians” in France were “going to do their best to take advantage of it and probably successfully to further divide this country”; his MSNBC interviewer Tamron Hall echoed his alarm, claiming that a “tsunami of hatred may await Muslims.” They must both have been disappointed, for no tsunami of hate rolled in, and those “really really fascist Nazi parties” never made a goose-stepping appearance.

In April 2011, after the fire-bombing of the offices of Charlie Hebdo, Dickey knew who was really behind it:

It’s a cliché among amateur detectives and conspiracy theorists, of whom France has a great many, that those who benefit most from a crime are the likeliest perpetrators. But that logic isn’t much in evidence when it comes to the burning of the satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo, its Paris headquarters firebombed in the dark hours of Wednesday morning.

In this case everyone’s obvious suspects are Muslim radicals…But there’s also little doubt that those who’ll benefit most from this crime are the right-wing politicians in France, including President Nicolas Sarkozy. They play on a generalized resentment of Muslim immigrants in thinly veiled but suggestive language that may broaden the anger still more. Here and throughout Europe—and indeed in the U.S.—Muslims are attacked intolerantly, and the acts of very few are attributed by implication to many. The attack on Charlie Hebdo fits perfectly into that picture.

Dickey’s reasoning recapitulated:

  • The question always to be asked after a terrorist attack is committed is cui bono? Who benefits? In this case, the French are not following that logic, because they are blaming “Muslim radicals” as the “obvious suspects” (implied contemptuous curl of Dickey’s upper lip). But Dickey knows it is not Muslims who benefit from these attacks.
  • The people who benefit are “right-wing politicians,” for “they ride the wave of that anti-Muslim intolerance.” Because these “right-wing politicians” and “islamophobes” stand to benefit the most, don’t discount the distinct possibility that they are the ones most likely to be behind these attacks that everyone is so busy blaming on inoffensive Muslims.
  • We should be worrying not about Muslim terrorists, but about those who, after every terrorist attack, whip up completely unjustified anti-Muslim sentiments to further their own intolerant ends. They are the true danger to European society.

When the second attack on Charlie Hebdo came, with the murders of twelve of its staff, and the swift locating and killing of Said and Cherif Kouachi, Dickey did not this time dare to deny that Muslims were responsible, or attempt to suggest that “right-wing politicians” might have been behind the attack. But in reporting on the Charlie Hebdo attack, he managed to include in his report references to “anti-Muslim sentiment [that] has been on the rise throughout Europe,” including “anti-Islam rallies in Dresden” and mosques being “burned” in Sweden (no mosques were burned down in Sweden, though there were three cases involving the tossing of burning brands) and legislation in the U.K. that “would require kindergarten teachers to monitor potential radicalization among their students” (no such legislation was ever proposed).

Dickey claimed that Europe had always “righted itself” after terrorist attacks (Baader-Meinhof, the Red Brigades) in the past, by “refusing to succumb to hysteria.” His implication was clear: Europe’s main worry now ought to be its “succumbing” to the “hysteria” directed at Muslims, with Dickey’s vivid imagination conjuring up these Nurembergesque anti-Islam rallies, this Kristallnachtish burning down of mosques, this thought-police monitoring of five-year-olds. Something terrible was happening in Europe as a reaction to these terror attacks, and it all had to do, according to Dickey, not with growing fears for the public’s security, but with the growing intolerance – that “xenophobia and islamophobia” — of non-Muslims.

It is Christopher Dickey who long ago succumbed to his own hysteria. It is he who has suggested we might blame “right-wing politicians” for attacks that later turned out to be by Muslims, that furthered their “right-wing” agenda. It is he who greatly exaggerated and deplored the “anti-Muslim sentiment” he finds in Europe, while he cannot allow himself to recognize a single reason that might justify that sentiment, though there are more than 28,050 such reasons available to him: the number of Muslim terrorist attacks that have been recorded since 9/11/2001. “Europe has suffered terrorism many times before, and always righted itself, refusing to succumb to hysteria. But the risk of radical overreaction to radical terror looms as large today, or larger, than at any time in the past.” Is it the “risk of radical overreaction” that is “larger than at any time in the past,” or is it, rather, the risk of Muslim terrorism that is “larger than at any time in the past,” in Paris and Brussels and everywhere else in Europe where ISIS, we have now learned, has managed to deploy its bezonians? When, in Brussels, the March Against Fear had to be cancelled because the government feared it might prompt another Muslim attack, was that an example of “overreaction”?

What, for Christopher Dickey, constitutes “radical overreaction”? Does he think that border controls in wide-open Schengenland have now become too strict? Has he noticed raids on mosques at midnight? Rounding-up of Muslims en masse? Gestapo knocks in the night? Has a single European leader – other than the much-maligned truth-tellers Geert Wilders and Marine Le Pen, always presented by Dickey and other bien-pensants as beyond the pale — even dared to affix the epithet “Muslim” to the noun “terrorists”? Haven’t they all stuck to the same script, the one Cameron read from this Easter:

When terrorists try to destroy our way of life, as they have tried to do again so despicably in Brussels this week, we must stand together and show that we will never be cowed by terror. We must defeat the pernicious ideology that is the root cause of this terrorism by standing up proudly for our values and our way of life.

So who are these terrorists, what is this “pernicious ideology” whose name we dare not speak that is the “root cause” of all this terrorism? If it is “our way of life” they want to destroy, then what “way of life” do they favor, and where, in what texts, might one find the rules and regulations of that way of life? Is it possible that reading the Qur’an and Hadith might be of help? Or would suggesting that be a sign of “anti-Muslim intolerance” and a “succumbing to hysteria”? When every government in Europe hastens after every attack to assure people that they should “stand together” (meaning that non-Muslims should continue to take part in the collective prefabricated farce and pretend that the Muslims in their midst give them no cause for alarm), have they “succumbed to anti-Muslim hysteria”? When the Prime Minister of France, just a few days after the Charlie Hebdo massacre, declared that “Muslims are the first victims of fanaticism, fundamentalism, and intolerance” and the same sentiment is repeated in the capitals of Europe again and again, with European leaders always bending over backwards to reassure the Muslims who ought to be reassuring them, does that constitute “anti-Muslim hysteria”? And one last question: did Europe “succumb to anti-Muslim hysteria” by admitting more than a million Muslim migrants and refugees in just the last year?

Christopher Dickey need not answer all of these questions. But perhaps, if he can find the time between outrunning that tsunami of anti-Muslim hatred that still has yet to roll in, and warning us about all the right-wing politicians in Europe exploiting those terror attacks on “our way of life” to further their xenophobic and islamophobic and “right-wing” agenda, he could try to answer for us at least that last one.

When there are terrorist attacks it should be the “peaceful Muslims” who are writing thoughtful articles calling on other Muslims to examine their communities, mosques, their holy texts and even their souls to find and root out and terroristic tendencies among themselves.

Think about it. If these “peaceful Muslims” who supposedly appalled that their religion being “hijacked” by extremists really exist, we should hear them calling out to their brothers, talking with their Imams and community leaders to ensure none among their Umah misinterpret Islam to cause violence. Where are their voices? Yes, we get trite statements from representatives of Muslim communities condemning attacks, but these are clearly PR for us, and not addressed to the Muslim community. I am expecting something totally different than a condemnation of attacks. I would expect a collective soul searching with much collective hand wringing that anyone among them could get Islam so wrong. After all, they have the “perfect example” of Muhammad himself right there at hand in their Qurans to lead them to peace and tolerance don’t they?

    • Elena Castillo says

      Mar 28, 2016 at 9:17 pm

Amazing premise. There is no outright boycott of muslims against other muslims who are doing what they are not. Maybe because they inwardly desire to be more loyal to the Quran themselves, and have the guts to do what their brothers are doing? Jihad is a mandate; more nominal muslims that are not part of groups who are adamantly seeking to comply with all the Quran, are wannabes and doesn’t mean that they are against what the Quran says about infidels. It is naive to think that non-muslims are dividing society, it is the ideology that permeates all who adhere to the Quran that eventually wants all to convert to Islam or death; and rewards those who kill infidels. Non-muslims being friendly to people who have a book who promotes the death of non-converts is not the way that believers in this book will be disuaded from adhering to it.

Today I saw a video by a brave American Muslim which led me to conclude that the biggest Islamophobes are actually Muslims. Not that they are irrational in their fears. Muslims know for sure how vindictive and vicious their fellow Muslims can be when they feel attacked. This is why Muslims do not speak out, not because they necessarily sympathize with jihadis. Maybe if he really was such a ‘brave American Muslim,’ he would be looking at his Faith honestly. Instead of mouthing the glib, easy platitudes about how Islam is just being hijacked by a small group of extremists, and that virtually all American Muslims love America and cherish the freedom it offers, maybe he should critically look at Islam itself. Maybe the so-called ‘radicalised Muslims’ are the true Muslims, following Mohammed’s precepts and example to the letter, and maybe allegedly peaceful, star-spangled American Muslims like him are actually the apostates? Even if this ‘brave American Muslim’ is right, and most American Muslims are peaceful, love America and just want to live in peace with their fellow citizens, maybe we should all heed Brigitte Gabriel’s warning that ‘the peaceful majority are irrelevant.’ Her video clip should be required viewing for everyone in the West.

Hugh Fitzgerald: Christopher Dickey and “Anti-Muslim Hysteria”
    ……………………….

Who cares that Muslims are slaughtering us in the streets of our own cities? The real problem is “Islamophobia”. sarc/off

Repulsively, he sneers in this article that Charlie Hebdo did not have a high circulation and was on the point of bankruptcy; and that they sold out following the massacre there–as though they should thank the Jihad murderers!

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/01/05/are-the-terrorists-winning-a-year-after-charlie-hebdo.html

He ends the article describing the Eiffel Tower surrounded by Muslims–and he seems to be approving. What a nasty piece of work.

Christopher Dickey is a cultural Marxist who believes Marxist theories explain all. They do not. Islam is a galaxy away from his own. Islamic logic is not Aristotelian logic nor Marxist dialectics.

Christopher Dickey believes preposterously that he can present himself as an expert on Islam without reading the least bit of Islam’s voluminous foundational texts…the Sira, hadiths, Koran, canonical commentaries and Sharia law. Christopher Dickey is an absurd figure since he wants to preach a progressive acceptance of a philosophy that is backward, retrograde and opposed to almost everything he believes in.

Without having read even the basic Islamic reading list (source texts), how can Christopher Dickey be a source of information about Islam? He can’t.

And here’s Christopher Dickey condemning as gruesome not Jihad terror, but someone daring to post pictures of Jihad terror:

“Marine Le Pen’s Gruesome Twitter War”

Comparing extremists of ISIS to extremists of Le Pen’s National Front is a stretch. But when she posted ISIS atrocity pics to show the difference, she went too far.

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/12/17/marine-le-pen-s-gruesome-twitter-war.html

Notice he doesn’t say that ISIS went to far in committing the atrocities in the first place.

I am not an entirely uncritical fan of Le Pen, but this is just grotesque.

Pro-Qadri protestors continue sit-in outside Parliament on second day

An estimated 25,000 supporters of the former police bodyguard gathered in Islamabad’s twin city Rawalpindi in the afternoon to offer prayers, before turning toward the heavily-barricaded capital, which was patrolled by hundreds of police and paramilitary soldiers.

Their demands include the execution of Asia Bibi, a Christian mother-of-five who has been on death row since she was convicted in 2010 of committing blasphemy during an argument with a woman over a bowl of water.

They are also calling for Qadri to be officially declared a “martyr” and want the immediate imposition of Sharia law.

The older we get, the more difficult it becomes to shed our cherished desires for humanity that we have ascribed to others and then found to be untrue. I remember my youth and the belief that all people, given the opportunity, would choose freedom and the best life they could live; with altruistic love for their fellow man.

Watching and experiencing life, that idealism has been eroded by reality, the understanding that cultures shape children into less pliable form as sustainers of the culture, that some cultures have outlived their sustainability, and that all cultures are not equal.

Mr. Dickey has kept his unrealistic view of Islam to the the point of mental necrosis, unable to delve into the Ideology of Islam; not defending it upon his study of Quran and Hadith(and Allah’s Islamosadism), rather, blaming the victims and those who care about what has befallen them – as some fictitional beneficiaries. There is no logic in such grotesqueness. It is a broken record.

We should try to be more like Muslims if we wish to COEXIST.
We communicate better while respecting the law.

Not need to over think this.
Instead of being full of anti-Muslim hysteria we should simply discriminate against Muslims wherever we find them, make them feel severely oppressed and subdued, charge them a special tax for being Muslim and stone them to death if they show any perceived disrespect for our values. Of course, I am not advocating that anyone break any laws. I simply state that we must change our laws to make Islam effectively illegal. No need to worry about the UN because they already overlook such legalistic discrimination.

This idiot is raising a strawman, a well known logical fallacy. Instead of writing utter stupidities he ought to take some lessons in Aristotelian logic. A posisble conclusion of what he seems to imply would be that right wing politicians like Le Pen and Wilders are paying or otherwise supporing the jihadis to do the attacks in order to increase their vote.

Asylumseekers from muslim countries should have to sign a paper stating that they leave and do not accept islam and sharialaws and only accept the country and laws in the country they ask to protect them.
If they will not sign or sign and afterwards demand and start to live according to the same rules as in the country which they claimed they escaped, from they should not be granted asylum or be forced to leave without delay if asylum was being granted falsely.
In order to protect the country they falsely claimed they needed protection in from that which they left.
They cannot claim protection according to EU rules since they are for European countries only and not according to the UN charter since they follow the Cairocharter.
Muslims should only be allowed to escape to muslim countries.

Islam is a totalitarian ideology, cloaked in robes of religion to present itself as honorable to an unsuspecting world. We have heard imams (Muslim clerics) who describe Islam as: “The Religion of Peace.” Islam is in truth a demonically influenced regime of warlords, whose goal is world dominance.

    The word Islam means submission.

Passages straight from the Qur’an which clearly show that Islam has nothing to do with peace. It has everything to do with beheading, raping, pillaging, and dominating the entire world. To those who practice Islam and are jihadists (the Qur’an commands this) their god Allah promises great rewards awaiting those who give their lives while fighting infidels.

Who are the infidels? This term means anyone who does not believe the words of their prophet, Muhammad. In fact, the Muslims in name only are hated by the Muslims who are obedient to the words in the Qur’an. Are you beginning to understand why the so-called moderate Muslims do not speak out against the terror? They are fearful for their own lives!

Here is an example of a command from their false god:

Quran (2:191-193) – “And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. And Al-Fitnah [disbelief] is worse than killing…but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving and merciful. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah [disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah] and worship is for Allah alone. But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun [the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.].”

I guess belief systems are entrenched in people such as Dickey and no amount of evidence will ever change it. It will take some personal loss or experience of the nature of Islam for that to happen. He is after all, Dickey by name and Dickey by nature.
