In FrontPage today I discuss how Leftist protesters are making violence and intimidation a regular feature of the American public discourse.
Ferguson. Baltimore. Chicago. Everywhere Leftist protesters occupy the streets, those whose opinions are deemed insufficiently progressive are abused, mocked, ridiculed, brutalized and physically menaced. This lawlessness is rapidly becoming the norm; the Obama administration, as well as leading media and cultural figures, need to decry that normalization and act strongly against these thugs now – before the American public square is transformed beyond recognition, and ceases to be an arena for free discourse.
Although this violence and brutalization of political opponents is a new phenomenon in American politics, it has a historical antecedent: the Nazi Brownshirts. In The Coming of the Third Reich, historian Richard J. Evans explains how, in the early days of National Socialist Germany, Stormtroopers (Brownshirts) “organized campaigns against unwanted professors in the local newspapers [and] staged mass disruptions of their lectures.”
To express dissent from Nazi positions became a matter of taking one’s life into one’s hands. The idea of people of opposing viewpoints airing their disagreements in a civil and mutually respectful manner was gone. One was a Nazi, or one was silent (and fearful).
That is just the kind of public arena that the Left has been trying to bring to the United States for years. For decades, they have told us that their political and ideological opponents are not just wrong, but malevolent. In college in the early 1980s, I was taken aback by the obscene, relentless, vicious hatred that the Left directed toward Ronald Reagan – I was at that time entirely sympathetic with their disdain for him, but the frenzy with which they expressed it, their wild furious contempt, shocked me.
And that was nothing compared to what they had in store for George W. Bush. Years ago, the Democratic Party as a whole, along with the entire Leftist establishment, adopted the Alinskyite tactic of ridiculing, mocking and smearing their foes instead of engaging them on the level of ideas. Leftists today routinely portray their opponents as simultaneously stupid and evil, idiotic but crafty; it’s practically a reflex.
The shutdown of Trump’s rally in Chicago, however, takes this one step farther. Trump supporters leaving the arena in Chicago after the Left-fascists had forced cancellation of the Trump rally last Friday experienced that firsthand. AP reported that “the protesters closed in on the building, obstructing most of the exits just as Trump supporters began filing out. The Trump supporters had little choice but to push through the anti-Trump crowds that parted only slightly, yelling, ‘Racists go home!’…Trump supporter Bill Vail said he walked through a gauntlet of protesters who cursed at him as he pushed through holding his 9-year-old daughter’s hand. She cried, he said.”
Commented Vail: “They scream about tolerance, but are being intolerant themselves. That doesn’t make sense.” Yes, it does. Clearly the authoritarian, America-hating Left has decided that the Brownshirts had a good idea: those whose dare to oppose their political views will henceforth be greeted with truncheon and fist. Soon the dissenters will learn their lesson, and accept the Left’s agenda with docility.
Cruz, Rubio and Kasich are already learning to do this, as they demonstrated when they had the audacity, or craven opportunism, to claim that Trump’s rhetoric was at least partially responsible for the shutdown of the Chicago rally. Do they think they will be spared? Do they realize that by charging that Trump bears partial responsibility for the thugs’ actions, they have tacitly validated those actions, implying that under some circumstances, the forcible shutdown of one’s political opponents was acceptable – if, say, that political opponent was prone to saying “outrageous” things?
They don’t realize that once that premise has been accepted, it can be turned on them. And it will be. Now that they’ve apparently agreed that violent thugs can be justified in forcibly silencing those they hate, what will they possibly say when the thugs decide that they, too, have strayed beyond the bounds of what one is allowed to say?
Cruz, Rubio, and Kasich – to say nothing of Clinton, Sanders, and Obama – should have forcefully and unequivocally condemned the Chicago thugs, called for their arrest, and declared their unshakeable support for civility in the public discourse and respect for one’s ideological opponents. Instead, they all contributed to the erosion of that civility and respect, and took the U.S. just a bit closer to becoming a tyranny in which the goons who shut down politically unacceptable rallies work for the state.
Hitler and Himmler and Goebbels, if they’re able to look on from their fiery graves, may be feeling a sense of having, at long last, triumphed.

A very good post, Robert. Ever since the 1960’s, the USA has been subjected to continuing threats of Leftist political violence. While I favor Cruz over Trump, I will also agree that charging Trump, rather than the Alinskyite Left, with creating a climate that calls for disruption and intimidation, was irresponsible.
BC says
Excellent expose’ of the left’s tactics. A pity it cannot be read in all major media outlets. I will post it in the Independent when there is an opportunity
grace says
That’s global I think. Anyone who expresses any concern about islamification takes a risk, even when it is just one on one with someone. When rallies are held by the so called right wing in Australia, we get attacked and abused by the aggressive left. And when the left get arrested for that violence, it has been reported as , “There were arrests”, leaving news viewers to assume that it was the ‘right’ who got out of control.
Always On Watch says
Grace,
Donald Trump’s “most unforgivable sin” has been what he has said about Islam (and Muslim immigration). The globalists — Left, Right, and Center — are stamping their feet over that.
dlbrand says
“Donald Trump’s ‘most unforgivable sin’ has been what he has said about Islam.”
Indeed, and for that reason, at last week’s Chicago scheduled event, “protesters” at that Trump rally multiplied exponentially, sufficiently so to shut the rally down.

Excellent article, Robert. Point on across the board.
Always On Watch says
Cruz, Rubio, and Kasich – to say nothing of Clinton, Sanders, and Obama – should have forcefully and unequivocally condemned the Chicago thugs…
They did not. Instead, they piled on.
I have my reservations about Donald Trump. But if the Left hates him so much, he is likely a good choice of POTUS.
I am consummately disappointed in Ted Cruz. What has happened to him?
Jay Boo says
Are you not disappointed in Rubio as well?
Alex says
Indeed. Everything and everyone the intolerant left hates should be regarded as very worthy of consideration. Trump got my attention (and then support) when they all started throwing mud at him.
dlbrand says
“I am consummately disappointed in Ted Cruz. What has happened to him?”
He has bowed his knees at the alter of Islam.
As Robert spoke to above, one either does so, or one pays a deep price for failing to do so.
As Islamic history provides, as the record thereof asserts of the “Messenger of Allah”: “Those who fight you die miserably,Those who make peace with you live happily.”
(Ishaq.)
So too, asserted of the same: “His [Muhammad’s) enemy bowed, and his authority prospered.” (Al-Waqidi.)
Senator Cruz is simply, along with Carly, one among our lineup of “leaders” on their knees before Islam.
dajjal says
I do not know the depth or breadth of Cruz’s knowledge of Islam but I am sure that Trump’s is harrow and shallow. Cruz irritates me by constantly appending “radical” to “Islamic terrorism”. Ending appeasment of Islam is long overdue. Our candidates should learn about Islam and inform the electorate.
Trump does not understand the source of Islamic hatred and needs to figure out WTH is going on. But we know. He wants a temporary hijra moratorium but I want it to be permanent and retroactive.
I created “Islam 101 For Politicians” for the benefit of Cruz and Trump; I urge them to make good use of it.
I do not trust Trump. I am convinced he is a LibTard. I voted for Cruz in the primary.
dlbrand says
Hey, dajjal, my Friend.
Last year, in the wake of the Carson high-profile statements on Islam; in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Tapper asked Cruz on Cruz’ stated fight for religious freedom, if that applied to Christian, Jews, etc. only, or if Cruz would also fight for the right for Muslims to freely practice their faith in our nation.
To which Cruz answered, Yes, I would definitely fight for the right for the Muslim to freely practice their religion in our nation. (If not precise quote, darn close to it)
That said, real brief here on Cruz and his understanding of Islam.
As I, and many others, have stated here and elsewhere before, for anyone, at this stage of the “game,” to be ignorant on Islam is inexcusable.
That is exponentially so for anyone aspiring to be the leader of the free world.
That stated, last November, as I know you know, Cruz introducing to Congress a Bill in which he calls for the Muslim Brotherhood to be declared a terrorist organization; one would presume Cruz, rather than simply pulling that option from a hat by chance, he did homework on the group.
Therefore, his stated call.
Therefore, assuming that; as I know you know, given your knowledge and understanding of Islam, all the guidelines, objectives, thus, the known practices of the Brotherhood come directly from the established text of Qur’an and Sunnah.
In other words, that organization functions, from stem to stern, on the “Book of Allah,” and on the traditions of the “prophet” of Islam.
For such reasons, boldly asserted by the group, and clearly provided in “SEC. 3. FINDINGS; SENSE OF CONGRESS…. (9)”, of the said Bill, the following declaration:
Thus, assuming, Cruz is familiar with the contents of this Bill, we thus deduce, he gets it: what the Brotherhood do they do guided by the Qur’an, led by the example of their “Prophet,” and thus, sworn to “jihad,” fighting, killing and being killed in the way of Allah.
Because all the afore-noted are simply basic doctrines in and of the Islamic faith.
Additionally, Section 10 A and B of the same Bill provide the following Qur’an-and- Sunnah- based tenets:
And number 11 there reads this way:
Now, in view and in consideration of the above, assuming, as stated earlier, Cruz is familiar with the contents of this Bill, as well as the reasons that justify the call and passing of such a Bill; if—which we know is so—the goals spelled out by the Brotherhood are found in Qur’an and Sunnah, thus basic Islam; why in this world would Cruz assert, he will fight for the Muslims right to practice their religion in our nation?

dajjal says
Well stated, friend. But I would not wager that Cruz read that proposed legislation. In any case, the political repercusions of a bill to ban Islam would be intense, deep and broad. Hell would break loose. Naming Ikhwan as a fTO is a first step in an incremantal process, not sufficient to satisfy us but the most we can hope for at present.
I would be surprised to discover that Cruz is aware of the mandatory fard al-kifaya binding on Muslims. He probably does not know that 9/11 was an act of Islamic worship. I tried to tell him, but there is no sign that he got my FB messages or tweets and no sign that he has read “Islam 101 For Politicians”.
Likewise, I doubt that Chump knows that Islam can not be practiced perfectly without jihad, genocide & terrorism. we must tell them but we can not compel them to listen or comprehend.
dlbrand says
Add also the follow for consideration along with that in my above post:
Cruz is clearly on the same side of the Muslim Brotherhood with respect to those aiming to silence Trump.
dlbrand says
Don Spilman, you asked, “DL may I make what you have said just a tad more succinct.”
And to that I answer, yourbet your boots–‘ mine too–you can.
What’s more, your appreciated added succinctness to my statements, in short, demand a re-post.
Therefore, as Don-man stated:
Amen, my Friend, Don-man. Amen. And that is for frigging damn sure.
Amen. And thank you, Sir, Thank you, Friend.

The Free Exercise clause is for legitimate religions, not for continuing criminal enterprises. When Moe’s cougar died and her estate was distributed, Moe’s meal ticket was gone. He had no source of money. He had a small cult to maintain and no income. At ytatthrib, he was reduced to begging.
There, Moe built a small army and began raiding caravans. With the proceeds, he grew his army until he was able to conquer Mekkah.
From Ibn Sa’d we learn that Moe was “raised for jihad and not raised for tillage”. From Sahih Bukhari we learn that “My provision is placed under the shade of my spear.”. From Surah Al-Anfal we learn that Moe got the top fifth of the ganimah and all of the fei. Bukhari’s book of Khumus adds lilly gilding details.
For documentation of the FFFI, turn to “Islam’s Mercenary Mission’, which is embedded in “Islam 101 For Politicians”.
Where in the Declaration of Rights and Constitution do you find rights to attack, conquer, enslave, kill, plunder, rape & enslave? You will find the right to manifest, practice & propagate Islam in that same place: nowhere.
Allah commands Muslims to obey andemulate himself & Moe. Consider what Allah commanded and Moe exemplified: conquest, terror & genocide: the practice of Islam is incomplete without them.
According to Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, the accursed abomination was an Islamic act of worship. According to 9:120, any step taken to injure or enrage us is imputed to the mujahid as a “righeous good deed”.
Who shall obtain a clue? Besides you? Please share this information with Senator Ted Cruz and Mr. Donald Trump: send them a link to “Islam 101 For Politicians”. Let the whole world know: Islam must go to Hell.
dlbrand says
Amen. Dajjal.
And thank you, Sir, for your input above. Thank you also for being one among the few with the courage, wisdom, and will to stand up to and in face of Islam and refuse to bow.
Rest assured, I have sent the link you provided to Mr. Trump. That and much more, to be sure.
Thanks again, my Friend.
dajjal says
Thanks, friend. I learned hours ago, through the agency of a left wing news site, that Gen. Boykin, Clair Lopez and Frank Gaffney are included in Ted’s foreign policy acvisors along with other experts.
Of cuss, the smear artists are jumping on them.
dlbrand says
Dajjal, you stated of Cruz: “He probably does not know that 9/11 was an act of Islamic worship.”
I count that inexcusable ignorance. Willful absence of awareness.
As such, given the lives, limbs, and trillions spent on the lie of a Moderate Islam, and a corresponding Moderate Muslim; for anyone aspiring to be the leader of the free world to stay ignorant on Islam, I count such a choice–minimally–dereliction of duty.
If not worse.
You stated of your Candidate of choice, Cruz, with respect to info on Islam, that you “tried to tell him, but there is no sign that he got my FB messages or tweets and no sign that he has read “Islam 101 For Politicians”.
Damn shame. Damn shame–his stupidity with respect to Islam is a clear deliberate choice.
dajjal says
I can not determine at a distance, what he knows and what he conceals. There is a hope that he is learning from Gaffney, Boykin & Lopez.
I believe him to be more ideological and more honest than the alternative. His performance in the senate primary and election evince his ability to campaign against great odds. I think he is less likely to crash and burn under pressure.
I want to hear a genuine forensic debate between Crfuz & Trump, better yet a series of single issue debates.

In combination, they lead him naturally from the role of pestiferous busybody to brutal dictator. Where the productive man dreams of the things he might create if only left alone by his fellows, the Progressive dreams of the world he could create if only the lives and property of his fellows were at his disposal. The roots of his pathology lie in that oldest and most destructive of all human vices, the desire for the power to rule over other men.”

The Secret Service immediately surrounded Mr. Trump protecting him with their own bodies, but if there had been A shooter, it would have been too late. I don’t know when the custom started for politicians to have people seated behind them during speeches. I think it was Obama. Robert I have been waiting for you to write about the angry protesters demanding to assert their opinions by force into the Trump rally, I to saw this type of leftist organized disruptions, growing up in the sixties. Not too much support for his right to speak..and as the lurking “hate speech” laws that forbid truth or words forbidden by an enemy (resolution 1618 by the OIC) injecting themselves with the left, to control. I hope the other candidates speak out against the disruptions, before the Democrats misdirect and plea for civility. without a hint of past use of tactics. As they say in Chicago, the” Democratic Machine”, I agree with you and Sidney Penny comment, “And this just does not only apply to Leftist protesters but jihadists as well. They are also making violence and intimidation a regular feature of the American public discourse. and let us add world of public discourse, well.” Yes, sometimes I cringe at a few comments by Trump, the negative ads are out in force, without any context, but he is the only one who sees the misdirection of some truth never spoken by the uninformed left.
Rob says
Once again Robert, thanks for a great article. One thing that I wish people would start doing is calling this violent intimidation ‘Democrats’ doing this. Yes, they are leftists and, yes, they are called progressives, however, these names give the democratic party cover for what they themselves are orchestrating. All of these organizations are coming out of the democratic party-they are all voting democrats.
It is similar to to how islamists hide under a whole host of different names to give cover to islam.

I don’t see where the, taken in, is coming from. Robert is capable of defending himself, but the article is about right and wrong, not right or left. Now we see more and more justification for government authority presented to us in the form of ungovernable violent throwbacks. The government has not only refused to do it’s sworn duty, it has been attacking anyone who tries to defend themselves. To make matters worse, the government has been increasing the numbers of ungovernable violent throwbacks at a rapid pace. OK I am by and large a leftie. As to Islam, I am firmly in the Bill Maher/Ayan Hirsi Ali camp. While perhaps not all Muslims hold these incredible views about terrorism, free speech, freedom of religion, women’s rights (or utter lack thereof), gays, etc; I also do not believe for a moment that muslims holding those views are some tiny minority. And those views are opposed to everything liberals supposedly are for. I am flabbergasted, frustrated, and disappointed in the left’s failure to call out Islam and in fact “politically correct” defense of Islam. I completely fail to understand the logic of complaining when a clerk won’t issue a license for a same sex wedding but remaining silent about a religion that requires (and enforces in many countries) the death penalty — and gruesomely carried out — for gays. As a free woman who has had the right to have a career, go where I please when I want, choose my husband etc. I see the spread of Islam as not only a threat to my way of life but to my very life itself.
What is the point of my rambling here? The left and the right disagree about a lot of things. That Islam is a serious threat to our culture and civilization should not be one of them. Peace out.

It’s true that Donald Trump expressed puzzlement over why Islam hates us just a few days ago. Ben Carson gets it, has endorsed Mr. Trump and has become his advisor. Dr. Carson gets it. He will explain it to Mr. Trump.
Mr. Trump has begun wearing a bullet-proof vest since that flag-stomping idiot charged his stage last weekend. As my Concealed Carry instructor says, a head shot is difficult, even for a trained marksman. Nevertheless, we should all remember Mr. Trump frequently in our prayers.
How is that for a fine irony that Mr. Trump is being likened to Hitler while they themselves employ the tactics of Hitler’s followers? I read online some ‘serious-minded’ (so they think) psychologists who were explaining Trump’s ‘authoritarianism.’ I have a BS and an MS in psych; they were so wrong-headed in such a convoluted way I would have had to write at least ten pages to untangle it! All who are familiar with the murderous-filled long line of the now dead, in brief, who dared to do what Trump has done: publicly, clearly, if not declare then, minimally, allude to the fact, in brief, it is more probable than not that there are flaws in the “religion” brought by the so-called “Prophet” of Islam.
