Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Toronto Star now calls the Islamic State “Daesh” instead of “the Islamic State” or “ISIS”

Mar 4, 2016 2:21 pm By Robert Spencer

The name that the Islamic State calls itself is…the Islamic State. The Star has chosen to obscure this because “the criminal gang that has murdered, raped and pillaged its way across the Middle East, while sending sycophants to slaughter civilians abroad, is neither Islamic nor an internationally recognized state.”

Yet everything it does, it patterns on the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah. So what makes it not Islamic? That Western political and media elites don’t want it to be.

Then there is the ever-present victimhood angle: “Amira Elghawaby of the National Council of Canadian Muslims says it’s important to go farther. She writes in the Star that there is an ‘almost immediate spike in anti-Muslim attacks and incidents reported to police’ after any terrorist attack by a group claiming to represent Islam: a polarizing effect that is one of Daesh’s aims.” So we are supposed to believe that whenever Muslims commit jihad in the name of Islam and in accord with its teachings, hordes of racist, redneck, “Islamophobic” vigilantes descend upon other, peaceful, innocent Muslims and make their lives a living hell? Pull my other leg.

IslamicStateshahadah

“The Star now says ‘Daesh’ instead of ‘the Islamic State’ or ISIS,” by Olivia Ward, Toronto Star, March 3, 2016:

Everyone knows Al Qaeda, but most people have forgotten it means “the base.” Boko Haram, which kills and kidnaps schoolchildren, means, unsurprisingly, “Western education is forbidden.”

But the term that makes politicians, pundits and journalists slap their foreheads is Islamic State — or the awkward acronyms ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) or ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.)

That’s because the criminal gang that has murdered, raped and pillaged its way across the Middle East, while sending sycophants to slaughter civilians abroad, is neither Islamic nor an internationally recognized state.

So as of today, the Toronto Star is switching to the title Daesh: in long form Arabic, al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham.

Daesh itself has abandoned the shortened term because it is too close to the Arabic words that mean “one who crushes underfoot,” or “sowers of discord.” It’s also similar to the word for bigot.

Those are much closer to the truth, and have the added benefit that “Daesh” also insults, rather than flatters, the group. So outraged is Daesh at the label that it reportedly threatened to “cut the tongue” of anyone who used it, instead of its self-styled full name.

“These people are a huge multinational gang of killers and rapists — they have no legitimacy as a state and this name change helps emphasize that,” said the Star’s editor-in-chief Michael Cooke, in announcing the change.

The switch to Daesh has already been adopted by politicians.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has been using the term since 2014, although Washington’s official title is still ISIL. Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron went so far as to tell the House of Commons that the country should drop other terms and use only Daesh.

French President François Hollande has endorsed the term, and many Middle Eastern countries refer to the militants as Daesh. “Arabic speakers spit out the name Daesh with different mixtures of contempt, ridicule and hostility,” Britain’s former ambassador to Iraq, Simon Collis, told the Guardian….

Amira Elghawaby of the National Council of Canadian Muslims says it’s important to go farther. She writes in the Star that there is an “almost immediate spike in anti-Muslim attacks and incidents reported to police” after any terrorist attack by a group claiming to represent Islam: a polarizing effect that is one of Daesh’s aims. And in a country that values its multicultural identity, one more reason to make the change.

Yes, those bad, bad white people. We’d better get rid of the white people. Islamic terror isn’t a problem. It’s the criticism of terror by white people. Hillary will shut them up by repealing the Bill of Rights.

My understanding is that ISISites/ISILites consider DAESH to be degrading and demeaning.

So let’s all call them that.

Fr. Basil, “Daesh” just mean “ISIS” in Arabic.

In other words, Daesh was the acronym ISIS used *for itself*. Now they feel they have outgrown just being associated with Iraq and Syria.

But the idea that this is a terrible insult to ISIS and one we should adopt is just silly, and one just being pushed by clueless dhimmis, and–worse–Taqiyya artists like Amira Elghawaby of the National Council of Canadian Muslims. She is cited in the story above.

Amira Elghawaby has made other demands–that we stop using the terms ‘Islamic terrorism,’ ‘Islamist terrorism,’ ‘Jihadism’ and ‘Islamofascism’.

“War of words: What we mean when we talk about terrorism”

      http://ipolitics.ca/2016/02/22/war-of-words-what-we-mean-when-we-talk-about-terrorism/

In other words, she wants us to whitewash Islam, and to pretend that Jihad terrorism has nothing to do with Islam.

That she is pushing so hard for the use of the term “Daesh” should at least give us pause.

The Branch Davidians may or may not have been “Christian” in any recognizable sense, but they were certainly not a “death cult.” Far from being a “death cult” themselves, they were murdered in cold blood by Janet Reno and her henchmen.

This was one of the darker days of the history of the US. Men, women and children were killed in that raid and it is my understanding that they were doing nothing other than being holed up in a building. I don’t think they were killing anyone. It was the US militia which killed. Had water and electricity been turned off they would eventually have come out. Janet Reno has much to answer for.

      The absurdly self-styled “Falsafa” wrote:

…and the Branch Davidians- David Koresh’s death cult called themselves Christian…so what is the point of this article? ah let me guess… its the usual pot calling the kettle black!?
      ……………………………….

The Branch Davidians have actually been around since 1955–an offshoot of the Seventh Day Adventists. The Branch Davidians are actually still around today, and are entirely peaceful.

David Koresh’s group were not actually Branch Davidians, but a tiny splinter sect, the “students of the Seven Seals”.

Koresh held that none of his male followers was allowed to have sex, but that he himself could practice polygamy. There is *nothing* Christian about this, in either Christian scripture or history.

The feds got involved because their were allegations that some of Koresh’s “wives” were underaged girls.

I am no fan of David Koresh’s dysfunctional cult, but to compare it to the Islamic State is absurd. Conquest was never one of his aims, and he never had any global ambitions.

Whereas the Islamic State intends to become the global Caliphate, and is making headway in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Mahgreb. They are pulling in fighters from all over the world–which was certainly *not* the case with David Koresh’s cult.

And what the Islamic State is doing is entirely on the basis of Shari’ah law; the tenets of the Qur’an, Hadith, and Sira; and the model of the “Prophet”, This was not the case with David Koresh’s sect vis-a-vis Christian texts and tenets or the model of Jesus Christ.

Not a single Christian denomination ever endorsed David Koresh’s cult.

Would that that were true of the Islamic State. Here’s the famous Al Azhar Univeristy:

“Egypt: Highest Islamic authority refuses to denounce the Islamic State as ‘un-Islamic’”

The fact is the Islamic State is 100% Islamic and is recognised by sunni Muslims as a state because they know well it is Islamic. Daesh is simply Arabic for isis, so what is the difference? It is the Arabic initials of islamic state, just like isis. Some people wrote that daesh is derogatory to the isis which is ridiculous because the name was chosen by them. Most (sunni) Muslims I spoke to in Europe and the Middle East believe ISIS is truly Islamic, Al Azhar also believes so. The maximum I could get from those Muslims is that they disagree with ‘some’ of ISIS actions. The Shia believe isis is not islamic, but that for obvious Shia reasons.
The funny thing is that the Arabic word daesh cannot be pronounced by Westerners because it includes a letter ( ع ) that has no equivalent in English. Why choose to embarrass yourself for the sake of a flawed argument?

  6. Custos Custodum says

    Mar 4, 2016 at 4:39 pm

Note how these well-practiced propagandists casually drop in some carefully constructed lies about seemingly minor points of the story, in the expectation that few readers would expect casual details to be blatant and important lies.

“Daesh” also insults, rather than flatters, the group …

Daesh is simply an acronym derived from the first letters of the group’s name in Arabic. The acronym itself is not insulting, any more than the acronyms NASA or NAFTA are insulting as such.

Boko Haram, which kills and kidnaps schoolchildren, means, unsurprisingly, “Western education is forbidden.”

The Nigerian group does not actually call itself “Boko Haram” at all. However, as with “Nazi,” those with ulterior agendas prefer to use the nickname to distract from even more unpleasant truths.

The group’s official name is Arabic: Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād ( جماعة أهل السنة للدعوة والجهاد‎) “Group of the People of Sunnah for Preaching and Jihad.” Note that Arabic is NOT spoken in Nigeria.

“Boko Haram” means literally that “books are forbidden” I would think. Arabic education is traditionally for children on a wooden tablet–not books. Maybe, the belief is that secular education with books is British colonial and haram.

    Mar 4, 2016 at 4:56 pm

P.S.: Another casual lie is the continuing reference to “Iraq and Syria.” IS expressly disclaimed this geographic limitation in June 2014.

Wikipedia (now partly controlled by paid Sorosites) steadfastly refuses to change the title of its article to “Islamic State” and helpfully explains that “the United Nations, various governments, and mainstream Muslim groups reject[] its statehood or caliphhood.”

Once the “United” “Nations” recognizes IS’s “caliphhood,” the terminology will become much easier. BTW, the former United Nations is officially known as الأمم المتحدة . The former UN is currently in the process of being merged into the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (منظمة التعاون الإسلامي‎).

Boko Haram’s actual name is Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād (meaning “Group of People of the Sunnah [acceptable islamic practice] for Dawah [islamic proselytizing] and Jihad”). Well, was – now they call themselves Wilāyat Gharb Ifrīqīyyah (Islamic State in the West Africa).

BTW the term wilāyat (Turkish vilayet) appears to imply a district of division of a larger entity (in this case, the world-wide “Islamic State” aka Caliphate).

It is not entirely clear whether the group still uses its original name (Jama’at …).

Importantly, both names are Arabic which is not an indigenous language in any part of Nigeria.

Toronto Star now calls the Islamic State “Daesh” instead of “the Islamic State” or “ISIS”
    ………………………………

This should not really matter, since “Daesh” means the same thing as “ISIS”. But it does matter–because in the West, using the term “Daesh” distances reader’s understanding that this is all about Islam.

    More:

Then there is the ever-present victimhood angle: “Amira Elghawaby of the National Council of Canadian Muslims says it’s important to go farther. She writes in the Star that there is an ‘almost immediate spike in anti-Muslim attacks and incidents reported to police’ after any terrorist attack by a group claiming to represent Islam: a polarizing effect that is one of Daesh’s aims.”
    ………………………………

This simply is not born out by reality.

But what it is intended to do, of course, is to prevent Westerners from daring to speak out against Jihad terror attacks, lest there is a phantom “backlash” against Muslims.

So we are supposed to suffer Jihad terror attacks *and like it*.

This is exactly what happens under Shari’ah and dhimmitude–no Infidels are allowed to even complain of being victimized.

    More:

So as of today, the Toronto Star is switching to the title Daesh: in long form Arabic, al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham.

Daesh itself has abandoned the shortened term because it is too close to the Arabic words that mean “one who crushes underfoot,” or “sowers of discord.” It’s also similar to the word for bigot.
    ………………………………

What absolute bs. “ISIS” just means “Daesh” in English translation–it is an acronym meaning exactly the same thing.

The only reason they are now using “Islamic State” is that their ambitions have moved beyond just Iraq and Syria. And it is hard to deny this–while the heart of the Caliphate is in territory formally claimed by Iraq and Syria, the Islamic State now has outposts in Nigeria, Pakistan, and Libya.

It is aiming to become a full Caliphate. What is a Caliphate? An Islamic State.

Others have urged us to refer to the Islamic State as Daesh–this will not harm the Islamic State–it will just confuse Infidels.

And, really, that is all it is intended to do.

How quaint and absolutely absurd. There has always been “an immediate spike in ‘Jewish’ attacks and incidents reported to police” after every lowlife terrorist whim; by a group not only claiming to represent Islam, but it would be difficult to convince anybody otherwise, based on their savage bellowing, as those responsible. It’s about time the mice did some debowelling of the fawning cats and their sleazy Persian (tor)mentors. Before ISIS, Hezbolla and their ayatoilet bankrollers burn in hell, maybe a conflagration right here on earth to get their own personal fireballs rolling? Iran’s subterranean nuclear world could be ripe for the pickings. There wouldn’t be enough virgins awaiting the degenerate scum in the afterlife even if they were only promised one each instead of the nursery rhyme version of seventy-two. (yeah, right!)

The point is that for people who don’t speak Arabic the term Daesh is not as illustrative as ISIS or ISIL. Non-Arabic speakers know immediately what ISIS stands for, not so with Daesh.

Just a very transparent attempt by the Islamophiles to obfuscate. Do non-Chinese speakers ever refer to the “People’s Republic in China” in Chinese?

But of course Olivia Ward knows better. How is your Arabic by the way.

I am confused. I do not see any anti-Muslim hate crimes, read of them, or notice any of them being discriminated against? AND I work with many. It seems the company I am stuck working with gets a Federal package to hire them, as well as other immigrants; I have found that it is those of us already Americans that are discriminated against- hateful and arrogant looks if we say or question anything a normal person would of impolite people. Arrogant and proud responses and challenges from Muslims is what I see. The thing I do not see is any discriminatory words or acts directed against anyone parading their Islamic beliefs. And they do, using office space and work time for prayer. Conspiring to cause problems and always taking front row parking spots, lol, just like many Americans- save for being able to pray and proselyte at work- which Muslims do. Anyway, could anyone show this so-called increase in anti-Muslim events???
