To this poster advertising Islam Awareness Week, someone has added a note demonstrating he has more Islam Awareness than the organizers of Islam Awareness Weeks would like:
Sura 9:5 is chapter nine, verse five of the Qur’an: “And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”
That’s the quintessential example of a Qur’an verse that Islam Awareness Week types would prefer you weren’t aware of. This is, understandably, a verse much beloved by present-day jihadists. In a 2003 sermon, Osama bin Laden rejoiced over this verse: “Praise be to Allah who revealed the verse of the Sword to his servant and messenger [Muhammad], in order to establish truth and abolish falsehood.”
Ibn Juzayy notes that Sura 9:5 abrogates “every peace treaty in the Qur’an,” and specifically abrogates the Qur’an’s directive to “set free or ransom” captive unbelievers (47:4). According to As-Suyuti, “This is an Ayat [verse] of the Sword which abrogates pardon, truce and overlooking” — that is, perhaps the overlooking of the pagans’ offenses. The Tafsir al-Jalalayn says that the Muslims must “slay the idolaters wherever you find them, be it during a lawful [period] or a sacred [one], and take them, captive, and confine them, to castles and forts, until they have no choice except [being put to] death or [acceptance of] Islam.”
Ibn Kathir echoes this, directing that Muslims should “not wait until you find them. Rather, seek and besiege them in their areas and forts, gather intelligence about them in the various roads and fairways so that what is made wide looks ever smaller to them. This way, they will have no choice, but to die or embrace Islam.” He also doesn’t seem to subscribe to the view commonly put forward by Muslim spokesmen in the West today — that this verse applies only to the pagans of Arabia in Muhammad’s time, and has no further application. He asserts, on the contrary, that “slay the unbelievers wherever you find them” means just that: the unbelievers must be killed “on the earth in general, except for the Sacred Area” — that is, the sacred mosque in Mecca, in accord with Qur’an 2:191.
If the unbelievers convert to Islam, the Muslims must stop killing them. The Tafsir al-Jalalayn: “But if they repent, of unbelief, and establish prayer and pay the alms, then leave their way free, and do not interfere with them.” Ibn Kathir: “These Ayat [verses] allowed fighting people unless, and until, they embrace Islam and implement its rulings and obligations.” Qutb says that the termination of the treaties with a four-month grace period, combined with the call to kill the unbelievers, “was not meant as a campaign of vengeance or extermination, but rather as a warning which provided a motive for them to accept Islam.”
Finally, it is noteworthy that, according to As-Suyuti, the jurist Ash-Shafi’i took this as a proof for killing anyone who abandons the prayer and fighting anyone who refuses to pay zakat [alms]. “Some use it as a proof that they are kafirun [unbelievers].” Likewise Ibn Kathir: “Abu Bakr As-Siddiq used this and other honorable Ayat as proof for fighting those who refrained from paying the Zakah.” Thus even Muslims who do not fulfill Islamic obligations fall into the category of those who must be fought. This is a principle that latter-day Salafist movements apply broadly and use frequently in branding governments that do not rule according to strict Islamic law as unbelievers who must be fought by those who regard themselves as true Muslims. This is playing out now in the Islamic State’s declaration that those Muslims who do not accept its authority are unbelievers and can therefore lawfully be killed.
Now there’s some Islam Awareness you’ll never hear in an Islam Awareness Week.

Another aspect is that if Muslims tell you that they are to emulate or try to be like Muhammed then it doesn’t matter how “moderate” they may appear to be. The Qur’an doesn’t hold a candle to the Haddiths and the Sira. The world has known for seven hundred years literally every aspect of Muhammed’s life, his sexual preferences down to what he eats. All one has to do is study those works available from UCLA and you will see how literally dangerous this Islam matter has become. They have infiltrated into the civic parts of government and public services. WE are in trouble! Get rid of them — especially if they are “moderates!”

Someone should just quickly compile all the comments by prominent writers over the years on the incubus named Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, supposed author of the Qur’an.

If people of this religion are asked about the soundness of their religion, they flare up, get angry and spill the blood of whoever confronts them with this question, They forbid rational speculation and strive to kill their adversaries. This is why truth becomes thoroughly silenced and concealed.
Kemal Ataturk(Founder of modern Turkey, 1881-1938)
Islam–this theology of an immoral Arab–is a dead thing. Possibly, it might have suited tribes in the desert. It is no good for a modern progressive state.
David Hume( British philosopher of the Enlightenment, 1711-1776)
The admirers and followers of the Al Coran insist on the excellent moral precepts interspersed through that wild and absurd performance……But would we know whether the pretended prophet had attained a just sentiment of morals? Let us attend to his narration, and we shall soon find that he bestows praise on such instances of treachery, inhumanity, cruelty, revenge, bigotry, as are utterly incompatible with civilized society. No steady of right seems there to be attended to, and every action is blamed or praised, so far only as it is beneficial or hurtful to the true believers.
George Bernard Shaw(British Playwright, Nobel prize winner, 1856-1950)
Islam is very different being ferociously intolerant…….And there is no nonsense about toleration. You accept Allah or you had your throat cut by someone who did accept him and who went to paradise for having sent you to hell.
And there are many more perceptive and keen evaluations of Islam. This is what “Islam Awareness Week” should highlight. Will it? No! It would be all lies and prevarications about this destructive ideology founded by a criminally insane being.

Zimriel says
“Abu Bakr As-Siddiq used this and other honorable Ayat as proof for fighting those who refrained from paying the Zakah”
I could see that, from sura 9’s context. The sura expends much effort (vv. 64-101) in lambasting the “munâfiqûn” (perhaps those who buy their way out of the military) who, in fact, do *not* spend enough fî sabîli ‘llâhi. The English Qur’ans often translate that “hypocrites” with an eye to the English Bibles. Q. 9:68 lumps the munâfiq and the kâfir together. Q. 9:97-8 calls out the Arabs(!) by that name as munâfiq.
mortimer says
Thanks, Zimriel, for a very important observation, namely, the ‘hypocrites’ who do not participate in jihad are LUMPED TOGETHER with kafirs who must be fought and killed (q-t-l). I found K.9.73 even more demanding: “O Prophet! STRIVE (i.e. make jihad-warfare) against the disbelievers (l-kufāra) and HYPOCRITES (wal-munāfiqīna) and BE FIRM or HARSH against them” !!!
This is a call for Mohammed to make war on non-jihadists (i.e. what we call ‘moderate Muslims’).
It’s clear from the Koranic text that non-practicing Muslims are considered ‘kafirs’ by Mohammed.
Koran 9.73 makes perfectly clear that ‘moderate Muslims’ must be treated the same as kafirs; they must be fought-and-killed (q-t-l). Koran 9.73 confirms that ‘moderate Muslims’ are considered to have left Islam.

Nelson Abdullah says
I am no expert on Arabic or Islam but I always believed that the phrase “Allah Akbar” and the variant “Allahu Akbar” – were being incorrectly translated. Too many people are translating this wrong when they say “God is Great”. Allah is the name of the Islamic deity, God is the name of the Christian and Hebrew Supreme Being. So the correct translation should be “Allah is Great” or “Allah is Greatest”.
Derek lambada says
Greatest (or greater) rather than great is the key correction. It’s not praising the object of the religion, it’s declaring the object (and his instruction) superior to all other considerations.
It’s supremacist and good Muslims repeat it at least 5 times a day.

The kind of Islam awareness they’d prefer you not have.
I received my first–and unquestionably largest and heaviest–copy of Qur’an from “the boys” at CAIR some years ago.
It is titled The Message of THE QUR’AN, and is what “the boys” provide to prospective reverts via their “Explore the Qur’an” campaign.
Well, let me tell you–I explored it and (unlike the clowns who provided it) it does NOT whitewash or provide cover for Islam’s true teachings.
I highly recommend that all here request a copy (and one for each of your friends, too) as it costs CAIR actual money to provide those free copies and it does what “the boys” at CAIR have thus far not had to do: tell the truth about Islam.

August_West says: “Writing on a sign, which will surely be replaced, is not evidence of success…We are losing the war.”
You are mistaken. That writing on a sign is as pathetic as it is encouraging. It means the awareness of the peoples is rising, and *an action* has been taken, even as small as “defacing” one of the enemies propaganda poster.
It is an *act of defiance*! Small, whilst passing by, perhaps in a hurry. But *it was done*. And the mere act will encourage others. A small step, others make already large ones.
We are losing? Just wait for the bullets to fly and bombs to fall.
Ever heard of: “When the going gets tough…”?

Mirren10 says
”Writing on a sign, which will surely be replaced, is not evidence of success”
It is evidence that whoever wrote it knows what sura 9:5 says, and is not fooled by crap like ‘islam awareness week’. It is evidence that there is *knowledge* out there.
”I doubt anybody even will be motivated to Google sura 9 5 on his/her smart phone while walking by.”
Really ? How can you possibly know that ? I would bet there are probably *lots* of people saying, ”Sura 9:5 ? I wonder what that is ?”, and **finding out**.
”We are losing the war.”
Speak for yourself. *You* are obviously happy to roll over and bear your neck to the scimitar. *We* are not. Why are you coming here to sow despair and despondency ? Bugger off, dementor.
Wellington says
With you again, Mirren. While I can appreciate those who know that the struggle against evil is often very difficult, that doesn’t translate into defeatism as evidenced by August_West.
Baucent says
Quite right. No need for defeatists, image if Churchill had taken that attitude in 1939.
RonW says
It’s not defeatism to note reality and plan to ameliorate it. Nothing to do with Churchill. Red herring non-sequitur.
Baucent says
“No plan to ameliorate” in August_West’s post. Just defeatism, and that is not Churchillian, whether you like it or not.
RonW says
Yeah, but just saying ‘sura 9:5’ doesn’t give you a reason to look it up. Why’s it there? Maybe pathetic musfool adding a ‘peaceful’ verse as a reason to go? If I didn’t already know what it meant I’d be inclined to ignore it.
There should have been some other text as well as the 9:5. Maybe the ‘Allahu Akbar’, as suggested, or perhaps ‘Oh Really!?’. Cause some cognitive dissonance to give a reason to solve a mini-puzzle. Then you’ll get a google lookup.
linnte says
Well, I know if I saw it I would Google it. But first I’d have to find out what Sura means. All that searching might just give a non-Muslim impetus to read that whole book! We CAN hope!

Mirin;
I am more than happy to “bugger off” but before I do…
Sorry to have miss led you old boy but I am not, and never claimed to be, Winston Churchill.
While I did spend my formative years in the British public school system, in Surrey no less, I did not know that I was expected compose notes on this site that would be held to a Churchillian standard.
Which leaves me to wonder if writing “Sura 9:5” in an empty space portion of a poster is considered particularly noteworthy in a place like New Brunswick New Jersey. I wonder how Churchill would be judged by history if his primary accomplishment was to run around writing slogans in the corners of Nazi posters?
I might only add that if you think that the average student at Rutgers University (or any other University including Oxford and Cambridge) is oh so inquisitive that they run around campus constantly Googling that which they don’t understand, then I would only say that you probably don’t spend much time with large numbers of university students.
Despite the fact that I was exposed to the British public school system, and even wore the Harry Potter outfit, I can’t respond to being called a “dementor” which is a first for me.
I do, however, understand your “Churchillian” request for me to “bugger off”. So in the words of the great “Churchillian” orator, Mirin, you can now consider this particular dementor to be appropriately “buggered off”.
With all respect that is due
August West
Mirren10 says
What a load of puffed up nonsense.
It’s Mirren, by the way, not ‘Mirin’, and I’m an old girl, not an ‘old boy’. 🙂
It was not I who referred in my post to Churchill; that would be Baucent.
I don’t know what school you went to, but they obviously didn’t pay much attention to spelling, or reading comprehension. I should tell Mummy and Daddy to ask for their money back, if I were you.
The point of *my* post, was that, however *small* it might be, the writing of Sura 9:5 on this poster is evidence that there are people out there, who have knowledge of the koran, and are not fooled by the nonsense perpetuated by mohammedan apologists and their dhimmi tools in such antics as ‘islam awareness week’. That is an encouraging sign.
” I wonder how Churchill would be judged by history if his primary accomplishment was to run around writing slogans in the corners of Nazi posters?”
A particularly ridiculous strawman, since neither I nor Baucent suggested anything so stupid as what you attempt to produce as an argument. Did they also fail to teach logic fallacies at your school ?
”I might only add that if you think that the average student at Rutgers University (or any other University including Oxford and Cambridge) is oh so inquisitive that they run around campus constantly Googling that which they don’t understand, then I would only say that you probably don’t spend much time with large numbers of university students.”
Yet another strawman, only marginally less stupid than the first. What I said was; ” I would bet there are probably *lots* of people saying, ”Sura 9:5 ? I wonder what that is ?”, and **finding out**.” I didn’t reference university students at all. This may be news to you, but even university towns contain inhabitants other than students.
”Despite the fact that I was exposed to the British public school system, and even wore the Harry Potter outfit, I can’t respond to being called a “dementor” which is a first for me.”
In the Harry Potter books, dementors sow despair and despondency.
You said; ”We are losing the war.”
Perhaps you would prefer to be categorised as Lord HawHaw, or Tokyo Rose ?
We in the West are engaged in a fight to the death for our values, our culture, our civilisation. This site is dedicated to spreading knowledge of jihad, islam and mohammed, and how Islam’s intent is to eventually ”make all the world for allah.” We here, and millions more, do not intend to ‘go gently into that good night’, nor do we intend to supinely roll over in the face of Islamic supremacism.
If that’s what you want to do, that’s your choice, but don’t come here, denigrating signs of hope, however small, with your cowardly dhimmi attitudes. We are in a war, and we need patriots and optimists on our side, not pusillanimous traitors.
” … you can now consider this particular dementor to be appropriately “buggered off”. ”

Koran verse 9.5 is said to abrogate 124 verses of the more tolerant ‘peaceful Islam’ of the Meccan period.
A practical application of Koran 9.5 is the following example from the Sira:
(Sira:Ishaq:455 at the Battle of Badr) – “As the bodies were thrown into the well, one of the Muslims saw the body of his father thrown in. He said, “My father was a virtuous, wise, kind, and cultured man. I had hoped he would become a Muslim, but he died a kafir. His abode is Hell-fire forever.”
The ultimate application of K.9.5 is to be able to murder one’s own disbelieving family members without remorse.
This is what Muslims are being taught to do. Do Muslims feel conflicted in any way about murdering people of their own nation, people, race, family or tribe?
Are Western people aware that Muslims don’t feel concern about the murder or mutilation of apostates or blasphemers?
Hope says
Yes! This cheered me today.

Here’s the official Islam Awareness Week claptrap there:
https://ruevents.rutgers.edu/events/displayEvent.html?eventId=69228
“What makes this religion, this way of life, so popular? Did you know that although Islam originated in Arabia, there are more Muslims in Indonesia than any other country in the world? Did you know that Islam is derived from the Arabic root word “Salaam” which means peace? Did you know there is an entire chapter entitled “Mary” in the Holy Qur’an? Did you know the name “Muhammed” is the most common name in the entire world? Did you know that Muslims believe in the Torah as well as the Gospel? Did you know that the best man in Islam is the one who treats his wife the best? Did you know women in Islam have a right to divorce and inheritance?”
Let’s wade in to this morass of half-truths and out right lies, shall we?
Islam is derived from the same root as “Salaam”, but it actually means “submission”, not “peace”.
That “Mary” is not the mother of Jesus in Islam, but of “Isa”–a vicious figure utterly unlike the Jesus of the Gospels, whose main role in the Last Days is to *kill Christians*.
That Muslims believe Jews and Christians corrupted the Torah and Gospels, and that anything in them that contradicts the Qur’an–including Jesus being the Son of God–is not just false, but a deliberate lie?
The the real “best man” in Islam is the “Prophet” Muhammed–considered the ideal man–who struck his child bride Aisha.
That women only have a right to divorce if a Shari’ah court decides she does–while a Muslim man can just recite the “Triple Talaaq”, and he is divorced.
That women do indeed have the right of inheritance–but that, infamously, she may only inherit half of what a Muslim man might, and that she may inherit nothing at all from a Muslim if she is not Muslim herself.

The closing especially, about “pay the jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” As if paying ANY tax is done willingly.
nacazo says
9:29 demonstrates that the fight is not defensive (these people did not attack muslims). The fighting is for what the people of the book believe. Also the word used in Arabic is qatilu using the root q-t-l which means killing. So it’s not an intellectual fight (taqqiyya alert) it’s a fight that involves killing.

I don’t know if Robert Spencer will read this or maybe some other expert will and can explain it but every time I read the usage of the term “abrogate” it doesn’t make sense. If I cannot understand how the word is used then I also cannot argue with other people about it. Can someone please explain this?
Quote “Ibn Juzayy notes that Sura 9:5 abrogates “every peace treaty in the Qur’an,” and specifically abrogates the Qur’an’s directive to “set free or ransom” captive unbelievers (47:4). ”
According to the dictionary, “abrogate” simply means abolish. But I think I also learned that, as far as the Koran goes, it meant that “what comes after or later” replaces “what came before”.
So please explain how a something in Sura 9:5 abrogates something in Sura 47.4?
Keys says
@Nelson A
I am no expert. You need a more knowledgable JW poster to better answer your question.
Though, if you are unaware of this it may help. The Koran is not in chronological order, so a high-numbered Sura verse does not necessarily abrogate a lower numbered Sura verse. Also, some scholars divide the Koran in to Meccan verses (tend to be more peaceful and “religious”) and Medinan verses (the later more evil verses, which abrogate the earlier, generally) based on Mohammad’s life.
From what I read Allah (AKA Mohammed) can justify anything, anytime making him chaotic and dark. Mohammad made himself god, and the measure of all things; he could change anything, anytime to fit his schemes and machinations.
My previous paragraph is not meant to be scholarly – just my observation.
Hope one of the experts here at JW can help you more, or lead you to a good book or link relating to you question.

Pretty much. The system of abrogation comes into play when 2 apparently contradictory verses are resolved by the later-written verse over-ruling the earlier verse. Sura 9 was the last chapter and therefore over-rules any earlier suras. After the Iranian revolution in 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini criticised the local mullahs for only preaching the early ‘peaceful’ verses and imposed Sharia law.declaring the Prophet ‘cut hands, feet’.

Nelson Abdullah says: “… but every time I read the usage of the term “abrogate” it doesn’t make sense. … Can someone please explain this?……So please explain how a something in Sura 9:5 abrogates something in Sura 47.4?”
Your requested explanation:
The ‘unchangable’ Quran has been changed by Caliph Usman/Othmann the 3rd Caliph. He has completely rearranged the Quran out of chronological order, and also burnt hundreds of other Quran copies. Surah 9 was the last ‘revealed’ Surah, long after S47.
I hope that answered your question.
Further, you obviously don’t know the Quran, at least not well. Note here Surah 6:115 “The word of your Lord is complete, in truth and justice. There is none who can change His words.”
Question: If it’s complete, then why all the other Surahs, following this one?
Should you really know the Quran, I am sure you will be able to answer the question with confidence and assurance. If not, then hopefully this will give you food for thought.

Ignorant people being led by liars knowing the religion is a fraud. In the book “The Devil We don’t Know-The Dark side Of Revolutions in The Mid-east” By Nonie Darwish
“Like a ponzi scheme Islam must have expand to survive. The ponzi scheme works as long as more and more people join the pyramid of Islam. When the light of truth reaches the pyramid, especially the majority on the bottom, who are not benefiting from the system and who are being sacrificed to preserve and perpetuate the fraud, then the whole system will collapse and the colossal deception will be exposed.
Tyrannical Islam will collapse when the civilized world exposes it for what it is and rejects it ; when its leaders get tired of their lies, fabrications, and incitement against innocent victims; and when Islamist are discredited and disrespected no longer given funds to enable terror groups and jihadist individuals.
The author dreams of a day when the snake of sharia will crawl back into its hole in mecca, as Mohammed himself said before he died.

I got an idea. Start your own “Islam Awareness week” Even copy the exact same poster. Only they will be given a different curriculum. A Robert Spencer curriculum.
Also be very worried about this development. The Muslim movements are strongest on the campuses. There is a reason for that. They are trying to subvert our youth. I know they are active at UIC so I can understand why the Trump rally in Chicago got cancelled.
Don says
You can do that for yourself. UCLA and other places have the Haddiths and Cira which you can read and quote to Muslims. I again appeal to you to watch the various links to Dr. Bill Warner and spread his message of Political Islamic threats. We have nothing against Muslims, per se, but their blind obedience to Muhammed whose life we know more about than any other person in history! Yes, even more than Jesus. He was rotten to the core! You can say that with conviction because Islam has not hidden that. You do like Dr. Bill Warner does and use their own approved literature to show them the Truth. So, again, what you want, is already available to you. GO THERE and get it. The easiest way is through Dr. Bill Warner.

I wish people would stop using the word “abrogation,” since most people have no clue what it means. There is no reason on earth to not use “canceled,” OF which 100% of people know the meaning. If we want to teach what is in the koran, we have to use words people know and understand. That is good teaching. This is not a vocabulary assignment, though there are a lot of Arabic words to be learned, this is getting knowledge out that THERE ARE NO PEACE VERSES LEFT BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL CANCELED OUT.
Donal says
“Abrogated” is a GOOD word and does not match the definition of cancel. Don’t be afraid of learning new words to understand what they mean.

Donal:
If you’re going to correct someone’s use of the term “abrogate,” it might be useful for you to tell us what “abrogate” means. Here’s what my dictionary says: 1. repeal or do away with (a law, right, or formal agreement), 2. evade (a responsibility or duty).

Who needs this religious junk? I’ll take Einstein and Asimov.

Daniel, you can have Einstein and Asimov and Tolkien and…. AND have religious junk too. Unless you’re a Muslim, then they would frown on your personal habbits of open mindedness!
