Congressman: photo of Islamic State caliph al-Baghdadi “eating a ham sandwich” would “undermine ISIS”

May 18, 2016 2:42 pm By Robert Spencer

“We have a State Department with people who think that you can show the evil of al-Baghdadi if you can show him personally executing a defenseless Yazidi. We need people who understand that if you can just get a picture of him eating a ham sandwich, that would undermine ISIS and its recruiting ability.”

As absurd as it sounds, Sherman is partially right. The State Department persists in working from the assumption that the people who are candidates to join the Islamic State will be turned off by its brutality. This is based on the further assumption that they share the values and perspectives of contemporary non-Muslim Westerners; State Department wonks can’t seem to conceive of the notion that anyone might not hold those values. They are bound as a matter of policy not to consider Islam in evaluating Islamic State recruitment, so they cannot consider the possibility that a young man who reads that his god wants him to kill or subjugate unbelievers (cf. Qur’an 2:191, 4:89, 9:5, 9:29, etc.) might be attracted, rather than repelled, by the sight of the caliph “personally executing a defenseless Yazidi.”

So Sherman is absolutely right about that part. But would a photo of al-Baghdadi eating a ham sandwich really undermine the Islamic State? Sherman’s reasoning appears to be that it would because it would demonstrate that he is a hypocrite, and not worthy to be the emir al-momineen, the leader of the believers. In that, Sherman reveals that he doesn’t know much about Islamic jurisprudence himself, although he is to be commended for recommending that policy analysts dealing with the Islamic State study it. That would be a refreshing departure from the prevailing denial and willful ignorance.

Would al-Baghdadi and the Islamic State really be discredited in the eyes of Muslims who support them if he were seen eating a ham sandwich? Probably not. A hadith depicts Muhammad saying: “You should listen to and obey your Imam (Muslim ruler) even if he was an Ethiopian (black) slave whose head looks like a raisin.” (Bukhari 9.93.7142) Muhammad is attempting to give what he thinks is an outlandish example in order to make his point that Muslims should obey the ruler even in extreme circumstances. Those circumstances include even if the ruler is sinful. Another hadith has him saying: “There will be leaders who will not be led by my guidance and who will not adopt my ways. There will be among them men who will have the hearts of devils in the bodies of human beings….You will listen to Amir and carry out his orders; even if your back is flogged and your wealth is snatched, you should listen and obey.” (Muslim 4554)

Is there ever a circumstance in which Muslims should not obey the ruler? Only when he commands something sinful. Yet another hadith has Muhammad saying: “It is obligatory upon a Muslim that he should listen (to the ruler appointed over him) and obey him whether he likes it or not, except that he is ordered to do a sinful thing. If he is ordered to do a sinful act, a Muslim should neither listen to him nor should he obey his orders.” (Muslim 4553)

So al-Baghdadi seen eating a ham sandwich wouldn’t do the trick, but al-Baghdadi spotted forcing another Muslim to eat a ham sandwich just might.

Sherman also says: “We need State Department people to [have] an understanding of Islamic jurisprudence. That’s not the kind of knowledge that you can get at Princeton. Woodrow Wilson did a great job. He did not memorize the Koran.” What he means by dragging Woodrow Wilson into this is unclear, but he is spot-on that State Department analysts should have a good knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence. Of course, that is forbidden by Obama administration policy.

“Congressman Seeks Ham Sandwich to Defeat ISIS,” by John Hudson, Foreign Policy, May 17, 2016 (thanks to Jerk Chicken):

A U.S. lawmaker criticized State Department efforts to combat the Islamic State Tuesday, saying American officials suffered from a “Eurocentric” understanding of the world. His suggestion: Instead of propagating videos that expose the group’s brutality, diplomats should catch the terror group’s leadership eating non-halal deli meats and disseminate that footage.

“We have a State Department with people who think that you can show the evil of al-Baghdadi if you can show him personally executing a defenseless Yazidi,” said Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), referring to the Islamic State’s leader. “We need people who understand that if you can just get a picture of him eating a ham sandwich, that would undermine ISIS and its recruiting ability.”

The State Department and Congress have long disagreed about the best methods of fighting the root causes of terrorism. Lawmakers often allocate money for hard security measures, such as law enforcement and border control, while Foggy Bottom emphasizes the importance of programs on prison deradicalization, rehabilitation and good-governance.

In his rather unique critique, Sherman chided the department’s habit of recruiting a workforce with Ivy League credentials.

“We need State Department people to [have] an understanding of Islamic jurisprudence,” he said. “That’s not the kind of knowledge that you can get at Princeton. Woodrow Wilson did a great job. He did not memorize the Koran.”…

According to one website about Brad Sherman, this congressman seems like he sides with Obama on many issues. He does not condemn the Demo. Nat. Comm. and Debbie Wasserman Schultze for aligning with George Soros! Rep. Sherman has also been questioned as to his standing with Israel against the powers that be in the Middle East, such as Iran! So it is no surprise that he thinks if Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi ate a ham sandwich, that would make other Muslims turn away from ISIS! Since I come from Brooklyn, NY, I think it would be fairly simple to try to sell the Brooklyn bridge to this simple-minded congressman. And he is a Jewish gentleman; with “friends” like him, Israel has no need of enemies. ?

    …………………….

Well, he *is* right to an extent.

Pious Muslims will not be offput by the brutality of the Islamic State–rather, that is its main *selling point*.

And it *is* refreshing to see an Infidel actually take Muslim “morality” into account.

But the idea that photoshopping Al Baghdadi chowing down on a Croque-Monsieur is apt to bring down the Islamic State is also absurd.

While there are some Muslims, for instance, who hate the Saudi leaders for their hypocrisy in privately drinking and partying, most of their subjects are fine with following them as long as they have regular executions in Chop-Chop Square and Shari’ah law to keep Infidels and women in line.

Besides, there’s the question of how many Muslims would actually believe that their beloved leader was gobbling down a ham’n’swiss–especially since Sherman has now spilled the beans, so to speak–wouldn’t they just assume it was “slander” from the “filthy Infidels”?

I could use the following image and mock it up with a ham sammy in a few minutes–would it actually help?

    https://jonathanoldham.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/abu-bakr-al-baghdadi.jpg?w=676

As absurd as all this is, though, it *does* point out the horror of Islam–where murdering an Infidel is praiseworthy, but having a Ham’n’Cheese McMuffin is “immoral”.

    God, I hate Islam.

Even if Sherman manages to somehow convince the Muslims that Al Baghdadi not only eats ham sandwiches himself but also makes others eat them, I don’t think it will put much of a dent in the Islamic State’s appeal to devout Muslims. The reason for this is simple- A caliphate is a fully Islamic idea. As long as this idea is being turned into a reality, Muslims are unlikely to care who is doing so. (The example of Saudi leaders that you provided, is a good one.)

But there is indeed this one thing that Al Baghdadi can do that will make Muslims turn against him- If Al Baghdadi makes others do Shirk, preferably on a regular basis! That is, if he forces [any of] his subjects to worship more than one god, make partners with Allah, etc. That is when Sherman will find no shortage of Muslims ready to kill Al Baghdadi.

Now as to how to convince Muslims that Al Baghdadi commits Shirk and makes others do so too, is something I do not know. Maybe all those people who claim that IS has nothing to do with Islam can help!?

      • gravenimage says

        May 19, 2016 at 12:47 pm

All true. Besides, one wonders in the end how much good it would do us “filthy Infidels” to further incite Muslims to target those they consider un-Islamic–considering we are the main victims. Muslims don’t really need to have anyone further validate their foul “morals”. Not that it would probably make much difference in the end–they are already highly motivated in that regard.

More impressed with his ideas for State Department recruits. After all, who memorizes the Qur’an?
Right, what the State Department needs are hafiz, imams, graduates of Obama’s favorite “beacon of Islamic learning” Al-Azhar (which, quote, “carried the light of learning through so many centuries, paving the way for Europe’s renaissance and enlightenment”). Hafiz who have memorized the Qur’an, especially that Sura “The Ham”, which follows “The Cow.”

Now if Sherman meant ex-Muslims like Sam Solomon, who was a professor of Islamic law for fifteen years, or the similarly qualified Mark Gabriel, we might be getting somewhere. Of course he doesn’t. He just means opponents of al-Baghdadi who’ve memorized the Qur’an, so maybe this will be Qaradawi’s next gig?

Sherman apparently thinks, because in his mind al-Baghdadi is perverting real Islam, he must also be devouring ham sandwiches, between rapes and beheadings. Or worse, he wants to fake the photo. Problem is al-Baghdadi is an imam himself with advanced degrees in Islamic jurisprudence and who has memorized the Qur’an, too. Just what the State Department is looking for! This is right up there with those plots to make Castro’s beard fall out or give him exploding cigars. Actually, an exploding falafel might just work…

Islamic studies is rigged – the Saudis and wealthy Gulf Arabs fund the Islamic studies departments in many universities.

And when Obama draws graduates from these acclaimed universities – he’s assured of getting the best the Islamic propaganda machine can offer!!

Georgetown University “Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding” Islamic Studies Department for one!

    ::

I think the Arabs did try to assert influence through the religious route – remember the ‘A Common Word/ Dialogue between You and Us’ which came off a little like a veiled threat. But they quickly figured out – that go to the heart of the influence in western society is to go through learning.

They are literally pouring hundreds of millions in western universities. And also aren’t the Arabs partly funding Common Core – all that strange Islamic madrassa stuff showing up in kids books. Things like ‘Allah is the only God and Muhammad is his Messenger – in the ‘World History’ books!

    ::

Although the Congressman is on the right track – I think that if is difficult for people to see how deliberate Obama’s actions are to do with obscuring the image on all things Islam.

No, change would not come from Obama – he’ll probably finish his last term in office – and could be found loitering somewhere around the Islamic world.

  9. John Johness says

This ham pig thing needs to be knock on the head. The Muslim regard the pig as unclean – just as we regard a rat as unclean. To eat a ham sandwich means almost the same as someone in the west eating a rat sandwich. It is not a big deal if the circumstances demand it and if the person was starving then it would be seen as sensible.
Obviously the Congressman is typical of the West pseudo intellectual, no experience of Sharia.
He probably thinks it the same as Judaism. He was told off when he was a kid by his Rabbi.
He is a fool, with no experience of the world and worse, he thinks he knows.

    • Jack Diamond says

      May 18, 2016 at 6:15 pm

True enough. per Qur’an 5:3 “whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin – then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” Nothing is more important than Jihad, not a ham sandwich, not the lives of Muslims who may be collateral damage.

Not to mention the whole halal meat business is nothing but a front for advancing sharia.
“Made lawful to you this day are the food (slaughtered cattle, eatable animals) of the People of the Scriptures…(theirs) is lawful to you and yours is lawful to them.” Qur’an 5:5. There is no requirement for halal meat in Dar al-Harb. But the demand for it furthers Islam.

We’d be rather disgusted by the idea of someone eating a rat sandwich, but no normal person would become violent as a result. Not so with Islam:

      https://www.jihadwatch.org/2009/11/australia-muslims-beat-11-year-old-for-eating-a-salami-sandwich

There are dozens of similar stories from all over the West.

That is because this is not really about pork per se, but about enforcing Shari’ah law.

    • gravenimage says

      May 19, 2016 at 1:02 pm

One more thing–we regard the rat as unclean because so many rats actually do carry disease–this, more than cultural taboos, is why most people here would only eat rat if they were really starving.

The Muslim ban on pork, by contrast, has nothing to do with whether ham sandwiches are healthy or not…

islam really is the weirdest piece of crap on this Earth.

That an American congressman could suggest, and probably be correct, in asserting that an islamic leader would be more embarrassed by a picture of himself eating a ham sandwich, than pictures killing, raping, torturing or even shagging a sheep, is pretty damn disgusting, and demonstrates just what we’re dealing with.

And how do you prove that what’s in the sandwich is really pig?

Now a picture of him porking a porker, that might just raise a few eyebrows, or at least make the other goat humpers a teensy bit jealous.

Maybe , we could too flood Middle East and all muslim world Facebook, Twitter, Google and any social network with ham and eggs , delicious pizza , club sandwiches with apparent bacon, Jell-O and almost all candies with gelatine. After a while , it might be tough to resist .

Abdeslam was caught by a suspicious pizza delivery ,after all . ( 6 pizzas for a place where was supposed to live a sick old lady and her daughter. How come was he eating pizza at the first place? A jihadist eating pizza?)

In France , Dounia Bouzar received state money for her deradicalisation center. One thing she would do with her jihadist , was to play them nursery rhymes that they might have heard int their childhood so to connect back to their humanity . It seems it works 0,01 % part of the time . I believe more in ham and eggs and pizza photos .

The British decided not to do it – but it would have worked better than showing a picture of al bagdahdi eating a ham sandwich. Muslims can eat anything, or do anything in the cause of jihad. Don’t recall the Hadith # but if a Muslim is unsure of the source of meat, all he need do is say bismallah before eating it and it’s all good.
