Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Islamic Social Justice Warriors: A Riddle Wrapped in an Enigma

May 9, 2016 1:51 pm By Eric Golub

Can Muslim women achieve equality and “social justice” within the traditional confines of Islam? A new program at New York City’s Union Theological Seminary (UTS), the Islam Social Justice Interreligious Engagement Program (ISJIE), held an inaugural panel discussion that tried to reconcile these two irreconcilable ideas.

Like the panel, the audience of approximately 100 represented no coherent philosophy. One young man wore a “gay pride” T-shirt, despite the fact that gay rights are nonexistent in the Muslim world. The crowd, diverse by race, age, and ethnicity, was ideologically monolithic. They appeared to be either leftists ascribing qualities of tolerance and inclusion to Islam, or those who would use leftists to advance a decidedly backward agenda.

After recommending the Twitter hashtag “#MuslimWomenInAction,” moderator Jerusha T. Lamptey, assistant professor of Islam and ministry and ISJIE program advisor at UTS, announced that the program would focus on “social justice issues, such as incarceration, climate change, [and] economic inequality, not just Islamophobia.”

Lamptey asked, “Can you be a scholar and an activist? Do our institutions permit us to be both?” In fact, institutions become havens for activism only when academic activists alter their scholarly missions.

Declaring ISJIE’s goal as the spread of social justice within the parameters of Islam, Lamptey encouraged the audience to ponder, “How . . . we cultivate a cadre of people” into action?

The first speaker, Amina Wadud, professor emeritus of Islamic studies and visiting scholar at the Starr King School of the Ministry, a Unitarian Universalist and multireligious seminary in Berkeley, California, described her personal journey through several religions before eventually stumbling onto Islam.

Wadud was “raised by a Methodist minister,” then “made a stop in Buddhism for about a year,” before embracing Islam, because, as she put it, “peace and harmony requires promoting justice.”

She was feted as the star panelist for her life’s work—a peculiar status given that she had difficulty defining what she actually did. Noting that “I work with LGBTQI Muslims,” Wadud conceded that, “A lot of my work is unknown” and “only one in ten know my work in my own community.” “I’m terrible at the institutional structure in every way, shape or form. I’ve always been rebellious,” she added.

Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York, attempted to whitewash history with a fictional narrative of Islam’s prophet, Mohammed:

Our prophet was a racial justice activist, a human rights activist, a feminist in his own right. He was a man that cared about the environment. He cared about animal rights.

She then declared, ludicrously: “He was also the first victim of Islamophobia.”

Omid Safi, director of Duke University’s Islamic Studies Center, rambled about the trials and tribulations of parenthood. Comparing it to living in a “torture regime,” Safi explained that, in both cases “you have woken up every two hours.” “Do I love my child more than I hate their poopy diaper?” he asked, before declaring, “And love wins. And the reason they are alive is that love wins.”

He segued to anti-Israel rhetoric without referencing the Jewish state by name: “Any movement that represses anyone else’s baby is an insult.” Alluding to the United Nations’ 1975 resolution equating Zionism with racism and getting the date wrong, he praised 1974 as the year the world condemned “racism, materialism, militarism.”

Safi attacked Hillary Clinton for being “a woman who proposes sanctions (on Iran),” for supporting the “continuing oppression in Palestine,” and for her “use of drones” before launching a string of self-pitying non-sequiturs regarding professorial finances: “Eighty percent of professors are adjunct [the actual total is seventy percent]. They do not have healthcare. They live below the poverty line.” Worse: “I’m a full professor still paying my full undergraduate student loans, and my master loans, and my Ph.D. loans.”

Perhaps forgetting the panel’s purpose, Safi kept complaining: “Do I write a book that my twelve friends will read if I send a free copy? Or do I want to teach the public?”

The event ended with UTS’s Lamptey reading a letter from NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio praising ISJIE. Several days later, DeBlasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray, announced a $500,000 grant from the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, a non-profit organization that promotes public-private partnerships “to meet the needs of the underserved,” for Sarsour’s organization, AAANY.

Sarsour, a self-described “Palestinian-American-Muslim, racial justice and civil rights activist,” is notorious for tweeting a photo of a rock-throwing Palestinian child with the heading, “The definition of courage.” When Jewish Councilman Rory Lancman replied, “No, the definition of barbarism,” she eventually responded, “The Zionist trolls are out to play.” That her organization is a recipient of taxpayer funding is an outrage.

It was a fitting end to a day of sloganeering against Israel and “Islamophobia,” meandering, incoherent rants, and the opportunistic nexus of Islam, feminism, and “social justice.” Given platforms such as ISJIE and the audience’s eager engagement, the movement to cultivate a cadre of Islamic Social Justice Warriors has launched. Americans should be wary of academic activists bearing “justice.”

First, here is a “Welcome aboard !” from me and, I am sure, many other readers of Jihad Watch.

I have not read the content of this post yet or watched the video, but the well-intended effort of these women is probably doomed to failure because of two reasons:

    1. Females are, of course, permanently second-class humans in the 7th century world of Islam.

2.. The essence of Islam is not what newly-minted optimists hope, but by the Qur’an and Hadith.

Linda Sarsour is the Al Sharpton of Islamists. And since there just aren’t many anti-Muslim incidents in New York City, she invents them.

And one of his fellow Mohammedans holds an image of the White House with the “Black Flag of Jihad” flying over it and the caption “Islam Will Dominate”.

The following is a bit scary:

“Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York, attempted to whitewash history with a fictional narrative of Islam’s prophet, Mohammed:”

“Our prophet was a racial justice activist, a human rights activist, a feminist in his own right. He was a man that cared about the environment. He cared about animal rights. He was also the first victim of Islamophobia.”

There are a couple of possibilities here:

    1. She is totally ignorant of the actual history of Muhammad. She has heard only what she is supposed to hear – namely that Muhammad was really a good guy.

    2. She is vaguely aware of the evil of Muhammad – but she chooses to ignore it because it does not fit with the image of Muhammad being a “good guy”. This is “confirmation bias”.

    3. She is well aware of Muhammad’s history – but chooses to propagate the myth that Muhammad was a person to be respected and emulated. This is the Islamic version of Hitler’s “Big Lie”.

The troubling bottom line here is that the meme that Muhammad is really Mr. Wonderful is spreading – and there was no one there to challenge her. I would like to have seen Ann Coulter magically appear to provide a slightly different view of Muhammad.

Hello Ted —- Your item #3 is the actual fact on her remarks, and Robert along with long time posters here are quite familiar with Linda Sarsour. Use the search box to find some of the shenanigans she considers legitimate.

If you want a comprehensive contextual explanation of what her strategy is, watch a video by the brilliant expert David Wood, titled “Three Stages of Jihad”

Running 24:56, filled with David’s typical dark humor along with CITATIONS FROM THE SACRED TEXTS TO PROVE HIS ASSERTIONS — I have recommended this item often.

Best seen when not multitasking or distracted. Please pass the word about it on to people important in your life, but who are still clueless regarding an agenda of devout Muslims in the U.S.

Yes, Jihad3tracker, David Wood and David Wood’s “Three Stages of Jihad” is excellent. His views are consistent with what I have already picked up from Bill Warner. It is also consistent with my observations of what I see going on in the world.

But what is going on the mind of a Jihadist Muslim? As a former Christian, I can over-simplify my personal view of “Christian Think” as follows:

        1. God Exists.
        2. You should be a good person and the best way to do that is to follow Christ.
        3. If you do so, you will live forever in happiness with Christ.

So what does the Jihadist Muslim think?

        1. Allah Exists.
        2. You should follow the will of Allah, kill the unbelievers, and emulate Muhammad.
        3. If you do so you, you will live forever in paradise.

I would love to know what is going on in the mind of Linda Sarsour. She is clearly a very dangerous stealth Jihad warrior.

Here is a JW contribution by Dr. Nicolai Sennels from September 2013 — “Why Islam creates monsters” :

          https://www.jihadwatch.org/2013/09/nicolai-sennels-psychology-why-islam-creates-monsters

You might find some insight there about the personality disorders (sociopathology & psychopathology) which find Islam to be an irresistible attraction. I don’t know what Linda Sarsour’s biography contains, but for reasons best explained by a PhD in psychiatry, she rivets Muslim authoritarianism into her consciousness.

And for a fascinating documentation of what happens when an imam encounters another person who cannot be dominated by his supremacist urge-to-kill, find Pamela Geller’s video “meeting” with the UK’s Anjem Choudary during a Sean Hannity show a couple of years ago.

Apology for no specific link — with a bit of luck you ought to be able to snag it. The absolute best moment is when imam Choudary is rabidly foaming at the mouth, furious that Pam is not in the same room so he could beat her to death, and she says something like “Sorry, I am not under the Sharia”. Priceless, as the cliché goes.

          I second Ted Tyler’s remark no.3.

She is undoubtedly aware of Mohammed’s official biography the Sira. No Muslim can be unaware of it. Without the Sira, there is no biography and no chronology of Mohammed. Everything about Mohammed must be adduced from the Sira and the Sira is filled with unsavory details of every kind.

Linda Sarsour is proudly lying about Mohammed. The ‘Great Leader’ stories are reinterpreted in every generation. Some Muslims favorably compare Mohammed with Hitler without any disdain or disapproval!

Jihad3tracker, The article by Nicolai Sennels, Ph.D. Psychologist, was excellent. It is consistent with my view of Islam and it is a bit scary.

Here is the video on “Pam should be killed”: https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2015/05/07/radical-imam-anjem-choudary-tells-pamela-geller-she-should-be-slaughtered/

The video was very disappointing. Sean Hannity kept interrupting Anjem Choudary. Quite frankly, I don’t care what Hannity has to say. I already know his point of view. What I wanted to hear was Anjem Choudary given enough rope to hang himself. That never really happened because on too many occasions, Hannity’s mouth was open when it should have been shut..

          “God Exists // Allah Exists”

God is an unproven hypothesis and nothing more. For me personally, He exists of course, but I’m as unable as anyone to give a valid proof.

Religions, on the other side, always are social constructs and nothing else. A must-read in this respect is Mircea Eliade: for instance in “Mythes, rêves et mystères”, folio essais, Paris 1957, p. 229 one can read “mais, répétons-le, tout ceci a une signification religieuse (…) l’union sexuelle et l’orgie sont des rites (…) // but, let us repest, all this has a religious signification (…) the sexual union and orgies are rites (…)”; or in “Le sacré et le profane”, Gallimard, Paris 1965, p. 11: “Certes, pour faire mieux ressortir les catégories spécifiques d’une existence religieuse de type archaïque et traditionnel (…), nous n’avons pas insisté sur certains aspects aberrants et cruels comme le cannibalisme, la chasse aux têtes, les sacrifices humains, les excès orgiastiques, que nous avons d’ailleurs analysés dans d’autres travaux // Sure, in order to better pinpoint the specific categories of a religious archaic- and traditional-type existence (…) we have not insisted on some absurd and cruel elements such as cannibalism, head-hunting, human sacrifices, orgiastic excesses, which for that matter, we’ve analyzed in other books”.

Rituals and ceremonies are of paramount importance in Mamûnism (vulgo “islam”); they may be socially utile but by no means have anything to do with God. As I’ve said already (May 10, 2016 at 9:35 am), Mamûnism — vulgo “islam” — is NOT a religion.

        May 10, 2016 at 8:29 am

Rene Fries – And your point is……..?

Be aware that the actual existence of Muhammad is totally irrelevant. The important thing is that millions of people believe that he does and make decisions based on that belief.

        • René Fries says

          May 10, 2016 at 9:35 am

My point is that when the ground on which so many people rest — in this case: the “rock hard ground Muhammad” — is pulled away from under their feet, there simply remains no argument whatsoever which could be deducted from the “sayings”, the “conduct” or the “prescriptions” of such an inexistent “person”.

The first of my comments to http://www.raymondibrahim.com/2016/04/10/isis-or-islam-which-breeds-terrorism/ will give more details, principally about the German “Inârah”-series (it needs to be said here that the authors of that series are by no means the only sources I’ve at hands concerning Mamûnism aka islam, I right now remember Grousset, Corbin, Arnaldez, Cusanus, Kepel and Kalisky but there are others in my bibliotheque).

You say: “The important thing is that millions of people believe that he does and make decisions based on that belief”, thereby confirming my point that these people base their decision on a BELIEF. But luckily, it is not the number of believers that makes for the accuracy of a scientific claim. History is a science [with many auxiliary sciences such as the study of written documents, archaeology, comparative linguistics — the “Inârah”-series going as far as to give examples of akkadian, aramaic and ge’ez –, inscriptions, numismatics and so on], and the question whether or not someone existed is a historical one.

All the authors having contributed to the said series are amongst the best specialists worldwide; their names are given in extenso in an other of my comments to the aforementioned R.-Ibrahim-link. Furthermore, the utterly strict criteria (“peer review” being but one of them) presiding over the making of such a series in such a scientific Editors House as Schiler, are entirely justified because their scientific credibility and career are at stake. They’ll not jeopardise them lightly, be sure.

Yup, Muhammad must have felt complete equality when referring to others as “raisin heads”, apes, and pigs, felt the glow of brotherhood while administering the right to have one’s head removed to hundreds, felt the feminine mystique of telling women they were inferior because the Quran said so, leaving environmental trash while sacking cities, much like the trails behind today’s Muslim migrants, and loved the “animals”, the Infidels, apes, pigs, and dogs.

It’s amazing that brains, like Linda Sarsour’s, capable of complex language, could be so incapable of rational thought and diligent study.

Islamic Social Justice Warriors: A Riddle Wrapped in an Enigma
    …………………………

“Social Justice” has always been a largely bogus idea–to apply it to Islam renders it completely meaningless.

    More:

Can Muslim women achieve equality and “social justice” within the traditional confines of Islam?
    …………………………

I doubt that #MuslimWomenInAction has much to do with equal rights for women in Islam–more to do with eroding defense against Jihad terror in the West.

    More:

…moderator Jerusha T. Lamptey, assistant professor of Islam and ministry and ISJIE program advisor at UTS, announced that the program would focus on “social justice issues, such as incarceration, climate change, [and] economic inequality, not just Islamophobia.”
    …………………………

In other words, keeping Jihadists out of prison and claiming that Muslims on the dole are somehow economically discriminated against. The “climate change” thing is just a distraction thrown in to make Islam look “green”, and hence attractive to the eco crowd.

Really, this whole “social justice” thing is intended to make Islam–laughably, given its grim history–look like just another “civil rights” group.

    More:

Lamptey asked, “Can you be a scholar and an activist? Do our institutions permit us to be both?”
    …………………………

Well, for anyone who has been within hailing distance of a college campus at any time over the past fifty-five years, this is a ludicrous question. Protesting is probably more popular than studying at many universities. As for the institutions themselves, most universities have been bending over backwards for protesters since the days of sit-ins.

But I guess this still sounds “transgressive” to some.

    More:

Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York, attempted to whitewash history with a fictional narrative of Islam’s prophet, Mohammed:

Our prophet was a racial justice activist, a human rights activist, a feminist in his own right. He was a man that cared about the environment. He cared about animal rights.
    …………………………

Just ludicrous. The “Prophet” promulgated wife beating, genocidal antisemitism, and the wholesale slaughter of dogs.

But this grotesque whitewash is going over well with some witless liberal Infidels, who are ready to swallow almost anything.

And Linda Sarsour is a nasty piece of work, claiming that the ‘real’ terrorism is the phantom Islamophobic “backlash” against Muslims.

    More:

She then declared, ludicrously: “He was also the first victim of Islamophobia.”
    …………………………

Yes–anyone resisting conversion at sword-point is engaging in “Islamophobia”…

Welcome and kudos to Eric Golub and Campus Watch for exposing this stupidity.

I watched that up to the point where moderator Jerusha T. Lamptey announced that the program would focus on “social justice issues, such as incarceration, climate change, and economic inequality, not just Islamophobia.” What was missed in the article was one further subtle point… She had said that rather than focus on Muslim issues they would go for the ‘broader issues’ (my words) such as incarceration, climate change, and economic inequality. Point being, there is no way to address purely Islamic social justice issues because social justice doesn’t exist in Islam when seen from a modern perspective.

In fact, I have talked to Muslims who rave about how progressive Islam was in the treatment of women and other social issues. They will proudly point out that women had no rights until Muhammad gave them rights. So strange they don’t consider how pitiful those rights actually are in light of modern times. That is because Islam is perfect, then therefore women’s rights are must good. Kind of circular thinking.

It is really quite astonishing to see this dog and pony show they put on. I think it is purely for appearances, because what do they have to offer in context of broader issues that affect us all? Surely nothing more than hundreds of other social justice committees. Then what does teaming up with Muslims bring to the table? I can’t think of anything except what it brings to them: A chance to rail against Islamophobia and the opportunity to make it look like Muslims care about social justice issues.

Now of course they may care about broader issues, as I keep saying, such as poverty and incarceration, but they are ignoring the thousand pound elephant in the room, Islam’s inherent misogyny and homophobia, among other problems. So it’s all a farce!

It’s also bs that Islam gave women rights at all, even by the standards of the time.

The pagan Arab world was pretty sexist, but Muhammed’s first wife Khadija was able to build and run a profitable caravan business during this period. She was independent and successful. How many Khadijas would there be in the Muslim world? Damn few.

Feminist qualifications of Mohammed: 1) 24 wives 2) raped captives 3) raped his slaves 4) pedophile 5) raped corpse of aunt 6) commanded FGM 7) commanded grown men to breast feed ten times to become adopted ‘family’ (even though he had banned adoption) 8) tolerated severe beating of women 9) called for assassination of women with children 10) commanded women to lose children in divorce 11) commanded women to receive half of male’s share of inheritance 12) commanded women’s testimony to be practically worthless in court 13) declared women irreligious and stupid.

    Wow! What a feminist!

      Quite a list, Mortimer.

I’d also add that Muhammed struck his own child wife, declared that “silence is consent” when a frightened virgin is faced with a forced marriage, and presided over the stoning to death of at least three women. *Ugh*.

I am not at all surprised. You cannot possibly get any farther to the Left than NY City’s Union Theological Seminary. The ministers this school cranks out are the battiest of the moonbats, completely out of touch with reality. Social justice is their religion and, of course, that includes lots of pampering and coddling of “marginalized” groups such as muslims.

    Jihad Attacks 151; Killed 1144; Wounded 1664; Suicide Blasts 26; Countries 20.

Just imitating Mohammed…that wonderful ‘human rights activist’. Or was he?

I would say that Islam does concern itself with a lot of SJ issues. This is not really a modern thing. But so what, so does the Bible. I could pull HUNDREDS of SJ verses from the Old Testament, including rights for disabled, animals, homeless etc.
I understand that Israel is surrounded from all sides by maniacs who want to rip it to shreds and throw them into the sea, and they tried to multiple times. But from the view of an average Palestinian, it’s just an issue of good old fashioned self-determination. As in the case of Chechnia or Kosovo, it’s just BS stalling from the host country. You really can’t hold an entity from leaving your state. And for those who say that Arabs are the invaders and they should go back to Arabia- are you guys serious? All of Europe is different invasions and settlements. Should the English go back to Germany? It’s really an unfair point. Arabs settled the Levant, it’s a done deal. Maybe Russians should leave the areas that USSR annexed from Poland.
The Isralis may have a divine right to settle in the land, but they don’t have a divine right to statehood.

not all of eretz israel, just the jewish half. The same UN condemned Israel hundreds of times. It also condemned NKR for occupying azeri territory. We really don’t want to use them as a moral compass.

Not really. The local Muslims are more concerned with the destruction of Israel and genocide of the Jews. There is no real concept of “self determination” in Islam.

As in the case of Chechnia or Kosovo, it’s just BS stalling from the host country.

So you will have no problem when the mushrooming Muslim “No Go Zones” in Europe demand their own “statehood”?

So–you’re suggesting that we fully enable the invasion of ravening Muslims into civilized Europe, because–hey! Its happened before in history?

Muslims conquered the Levant, the Magreb, and the Middle East, and they are now violent Muslim crap holes. Is this what you want for Europe and the rest of the West?

      More:

Arabs settled the Levant, it’s a done deal.

The Muslims–this is not really about ethnicity–invaded the Levant. Again, is this what you want for the West?

Divine right is not the issue for most people–Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East–a vibrant, civilized, modern society. Is is correct that you have no interest whether she and her people survive, or whether she is turned into an oppressive, violent killing ground? *Ugh*.

A female Muslim baby who poops brings dishonor to the Muslim household.

““Do I love my child more than I hate their poopy diaper?” he asked, before declaring, “And love wins. And the reason they are alive is that love wins.””
