The idea that Islam is a religion of peace has to be constantly repeated, because it is contradicted daily by the behavior of Islamic jihadists, and their justification of their murders by pointing to the Qur’an and Sunnah.
The Sultan of Sokoto did not explain how it happened that a group that called itself the Congregation of the People of the Sunnah for Dawah and Jihad, which was the official name of Boko Haram until it changed its name last year to the Islamic State in West Africa, could have misunderstood Islam so spectacularly. Nor, unfortunately, did he say what he planned to do to teach young Muslims why they should reject and avoid this understanding of Islam.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III has described Islam as a religion of peace, lamenting that, “men of state rather than elder statesmen” often found it very easy to attribute every negative thing to Muslims and Islam.
Disclosing this at the 22nd Annual Ummah Convention 2016 organised by the National Islamic Centre, NIC, Zaria, Kaduna State, on Sunday, the Sultan declared that, “it is our right to practice our religion without any interference by anybody.”
He went on to urge Nigerians to rally round President Muhammadu Buhari in his task of building a strong nation, stressing that the call became imperative following the economic upheavals bedevilling the country and the quest by the present administration to proffer lasting solution….
