Germany: Church holds Muslim funeral for slain Islamic State jihadi

Jun 4, 2016 10:51 am By Robert Spencer

Surrender. Defeat. Subjugation. This is what they look like.

St-Pauli-Church-Hamburg

“Outrage As Church Holds Muslim Funeral for Islamic State Fighter,” by Oliver Lane and Chris Tomlinson, Breitbart, May 27, 2016:

A German pastor has decided to hold a Muslim funeral for a 17-year-old who died fighting for Islamic State in Syria, leaving many outraged.

Pastor Sieghard Wilm of the protestant St. Pauli Church in Hamburg is stirring strong emotions after he made the choice to hold a Muslim funeral in his church for 17-year-old ‘Florent’, who died fighting for the Islamic state in Syria in July. The funeral will take place today.

It was confirmed that Florent had sent an audio message back to Germany shortly before his death, saying that he had become disillusioned with the terrorist group. This led to speculation that members of Islamic State had killed him themselves. Mr. Wilm said he has dealt with worse criticism in his life than holding a funeral for a terrorist and explained his motivations in an interview with SHZ.de.

“We cannot deny this is a difficult situation,” Mr. Wilm said in response to critics. “I can tell you as a pastor at St. Pauli, that I have also laid to rest more killers,” and claimed: “A man remains a man. Even a person who has offended against someone. Even such a man has relatives who mourn him.”

Germany’s NDR reports there has been heated discussion over the funeral, especially on social media. Euronews reports today’s funeral has “stimulated” debate.

Mr. Wilm claims that he wanted to use the opportunity to create a “safe space” for the family of the slain terrorist so they are not forced to grieve in private. He mentioned that the Muslim service would be a good opportunity for “learning and respect among religions”.

Seventeen-year-old Florent immigrated to Germany from Cameroon and was raised as a Christian until he was converted to Islam at the age of 14 by Salafist preachers. Mr. Wilm said that since the mother of Florent was Christian it was more appropriate for her to be in a church to mourn his death, than a mosque.

The radicalisation of Florent did not go unnoticed to the pastor who said at first he observed Florent wearing baggy white clothes, and his suspicions were confirmed when Florent told him he had changed his name to Bilal.  The young Muslim was said to have been influenced by Salafists, which led to him getting in trouble for abusing a young girl wearing an Islamic headscarf, according to Mr. Wilm.

Mr. Wilm fell out of contact with Florent soon after his conversion to Salafism, remarking that Salafists weren’t welcome in his youth centre because of the view they had on separating men and women. “I’d never see Florent alone on the road, but always in the group,” he said adding ” it was clear that he had been estranged from me and his former social environment”.

Florent was part of a growing list of young radicalised Muslims who have gone off to fight for Islamic State or attempted to make the journey to Syria. Sixty-five Muslims from Hamburg alone have travelled to Syria, and 15 have returned….

Salafism or Wahaism or whatever ism of Islam the objective is the same. Radical or moderate they are two sides of the same coin of Islam. It is just that they hoodwink all and sundry by playing “good cop-bad cop” with the same end goal. Need one say or inform that a fellow Muslim is much more prized/valued etc than any infidel -“after all those infidels deserved to die” (whenever any fundamentalist Islamist killed anyone for no rhyme or reason)

I understand PRCS is being sarcastic but I couldn’t stop myself from commenting.

The Christian Church has no business conducting a funeral for an unrepentant murderer who rejects Christ to be the Son of God and his Saviour from his sins who went to hell. Some say: “Bury him so that the people who are still alive will hear God’s Word.” By example of NOT burying the pagan the people see the truth, the truth that the Church stands for the truth. Do the military give their funeral rites to a non-soldier, even one who hates the military and hates the country that the military serves, etc.? It’s a shame what some priests and pastors and rabbis believe and do. Jesus said, “let the dead bury their dead.” )Mt. 8:22)

  6. mortimer says

    Jun 4, 2016 at 11:19 am

This is not a compromise or sell-out. It’s pastoral care for a grieving Christian mother. There’s no proof that Florent didn’t die a Christian after seeing the falseness of Islam.

Quote: “Wilm said that since the mother of Florent was Christian it was more appropriate for her to be in a church to mourn his death, than a mosque.”

    • Jack Diamond says

      Jun 4, 2016 at 1:13 pm

It’s not a Christian funeral service being held for the benefit of the mother, it’s a Muslim service inside a Christian church. It is anathema. Which also must mean he died as a Muslim. You know, he just saw the falseness of ‘salafism’ (that distortion of the ‘good Islam’) but not of Islam and so his corpse will be consecrated to Allah, with appropriate Qur’anic verses of supremacy and hatred for all those non-Muslims in the church (any who understand Arabic).

      • Jay Boo says

        Jun 4, 2016 at 2:05 pm

If the service had nothing about Islam and no visiting Koranimals to offer a “few words” then mortimers point seams reasonable enough but if this turned into the typical (Muslim service ) / interfaith gathering then it would be pointless at best to hold the funeral at a church and a deliberate insult to Christians.

      • gravenimage says

        Jun 5, 2016 at 8:13 pm

Mortimer and Jay Boo, Jack is right–this was a *Muslim funeral*:

    • Kepha says

      Jun 4, 2016 at 9:13 pm

Had Mr. Wilm merely allowed Florent’s Christian family members to mourn in the church, I’d have no problem. But I do have a problem with Herr Wilm holding a Muslim funeral in a church named for the Apostle Paul, of all people.

Islam insults Jesus Christ by calling him a mere man, denying that he made atonement for the sins of his people on the cross, and saying that the Holy Spirit promised by Jesus Christ in the Upper Room Discourse is actually a pile of dust and bone lying in a grave in Medina.

This shows how hollow and heretical the supposedly “Christian” churches of much of the North Atlantic world have become.

        Chrislam.

    • Baucent says

      Jun 5, 2016 at 3:27 am

Firstly there is no mention of the body. It is unlikely the body was returned from Syria to Germany. So without a body it’s not a funeral, either Christian or Muslim, but a memorial service. Where the pastor has made a error, is in allowing the memorial service to be conducted by presumably a Imam. Rev Wilm should have conducted the service as a Christian service for the mother and family and any muslim friends of the deceased that might have wanted to attend. But turning his church building over for a muslim service was a mistake.

      • Charli Main says

        Jun 5, 2016 at 4:14 am

Also—-any Muslim service conducted in a church, makes that church an Islamic mosque for all time.

This pastor is an arrogant and rotten to the core S.O.B.

Comfort for the grieving mother, ok, but a funeral must, at some level, ‘offend’ his parishioners.
The pastor, (“Mr. Wilm said he has dealt with worse criticism in his life than holding a funeral for a terrorist …”), sounds like a high-handed fool to me. The validity of the funeral is beyond my ken but I’d like to suggest to the parishioners to contact their bishop/church elders for guidance. It sounds like their shepherd is wavering.

The problem is one of reciprocity. Islam extends none to other faiths, because it believes itself to be the sole legitimate theology, superior to all others; indeed, Islam demands the killings or subjugation of people who choose to follow other faiths. So, all of these well-intentioned “interfaith” gestures, of which there are many in the U.S. and Europe, are misguided and naive, because Muslims will never extend the same gestures in return; their ideology forbids them from doing so. I’m recalling that plan (rescinded after criticism) by a U.S. university to allow the Muslim call to prayer to issue forth from the university chapel’s tower. All that these ill-considered gestures accomplish is to cement the notion of dhimmi status in the eye of our alleged Muslim betters.

I have heard esewhere that he converted back to Christianity, which may indeed mean he was killed by the muj. The least that can be done then is to insist on a Christian funeral.

If so there should be no Islamic element to the funeral. If he didn’t leave Islam then the best pastorally caring and theologically legitimate response may have been two separate services dso that poor mother and others who would not feel their grief dealt with by attending a Muslim service.

      Good post, GH.
If he did convert back and that was why he was killed, then he is a martyr for his faith.
These are key elements to the article we do not know.

I wonder if he did revert and the mother would have a Christian burial, if the Muslim husband would have an obligation to kill his wife because a Christian burial would dishonor his family as the son would be a disgrace to him which the wife supports.

With censorship I mean that living active peopel should be dealt with some decency.

How is muzzling people concerned about the terrible threat of Islam “decency”? Censoring people speaking out against evil ensures that there will be no decency in society.

Germany is one of the richest countries in the world and in Europe. The church is a forgiving institution. Punishment is for the governments instutions..

The idea that if this church refuses to hold a memorial service for a vicious thug that this is “punishment” is grotesque.

To Birger Winsa- As per your comment of June 5, 2016, 4:19 am, you state: “Punishment is for the governments’ institutions.” I would like to debate that point with you because I think the people who are in office, whether freely elected or dictators who seized power, should be punished for their hidden agendas and lack of transparency in the way and method of doing/not doing their jobs. Many make deals and many get paid off by those wanting to wrestle the power away from the voting population. And as a Swede, do you think you get your rights from God or from your government? What happens one day when you wake up and your government says “We won’t give you your rights today. Suffer for it. And oh yeah, tough tacks for you.”

So he had a Muslim service in a church. How can that be possible? Who conducted the Muslim service? Was it the good reverend? Was it an Imam?
For a Muslim service all the crosses and icons have to be removed and an Islamic blessing of some sort to cleanse the room.
If that happened did the good reverend have the church blessed again before he delivered a Christian service?
These questions are not being answered and I doubt anyone has asked them.
If the parents are Christian they could visit a church any time and pray for his soul but I can’t see how their son could possibly receive a Muslim funeral in a church unless that church was cleansed first. For that the reverend should be fired immediately.
That church would’ve become a mosque for that time and without it being consecrated afterward will remain a mosque.

Thank you for describing this church as “Protestant” and not as “Lutheran” (as so many erroneously do). This church is part of the EKD, which is, in fact, Protestant.

    Blessings!

Thanks for the comment brother Tiews. I’m a 1955 grad of our St Louis seminary member now of LCC, here in Canada, retired. God bless your work and family. And God bless America and all of the other countries too that have the Islamic cancer killing them.

To Pastor Tiews- Thank you for checking in with JihadWatch.org. This website/blog has taught me so much about the doctrines of Islam. Robert Spencer is brilliant and I love him. Many, many of the readers and commenters have taught me a lot as well. I am a member of a LCMS church in NYC. I love the Missouri Synod, but think they should stop taking money from the federal government for placing Muslim refugees. The mosques should be doing that, (if anybody should be doing that,) not Christian churches. Ministers of the LCMS (in my opinion) should focus on getting people to be part of the Body of Christ and to tithe, because obeying God brings blessings. Just my thoughts.

MMMMmmmmm, ‘Business opportunity here in Kent. ? I might organise funerals for Jihadi types. Stuff the Muslim carcase into my rowing boat, take the devout maggot and his koran out to sea half a mile. Check the dustbin sack for movement, knock it on the head if in doubt and heave it over the side.. THEN, and here is the payback for having to handle the Islamic piece of toxic waste. I might meet a rubber boat full of migrants heading for England and facilitate their arrival in Muslim heaven by swapping their boat’s bung or bungs for a cheap boot fair prayer mat. Inshallah !!

Germany: Church holds Muslim funeral for slain Islamic State jihadi

Surrender. Defeat. Subjugation. This is what they look like.
    ……………………………..

Perhaps even worse than that–cosying up to the worst of the worst.

Just like the kind of churches that slobber all over Death-Row murderers.

    More:

It was confirmed that Florent had sent an audio message back to Germany shortly before his death, saying that he had become disillusioned with the terrorist group.
    ……………………………..

The idea here is that Florent–really, Bilal–had rejected ISIS. But in many cases this is not a rejection of violent Jihad, but but just missing the amenities of the West.
