UK: Theresa May scrapped aerial border surveillance despite warnings

Jun 1, 2016 1:35 pm By Robert Spencer

What’s the big deal? What could possibly go wrong? It isn’t as if Britain faces any threat from any entities that wish to destroy it, right?

Theresa May

“Theresa May scrapped aerial border surveillance despite warnings from former security minister,” by Peter Dominiczak and Steven Swinford, Telegraph, May 31, 2016 (thanks to Lookmann):

Theresa May cancelled an aerial surveillance programme designed to stop migrants crossing the Channel into Britain to save money despite warnings from a former security minister, the Telegraph can disclose.

The Home Secretary in January agreed to scrap a £4million surveillance contract despite being told by Baroness Neville-Jones, a former security minister and chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, that it was a risk to Britain’s border security.

It comes amid growing criticism of Britain’s border security after growing evidence emerged that people smugglers are increasingly using small boats to ferry migrants across the Channel to small ports and harbours on the UK coastline.

Two British men were at the weekend arrested after a boat carrying 18 Albanian migrants was rescued off the coast of Kent.

The Home Office on Tuesday announced that around six new vessels would be brought into service to patrol British coastal waters.

However, the plans were immediately labelled a “joke” by Conservative MPs after it emerged that all of the boats will not be fully operational until the end of 2017.

Mrs May in January cancelled the contract with Cobham, a major aviation services company, providing round-the-clock aerial surveillance of Britain’s borders.

In a letter to the Home Secretary seen by the Telegraph, Baroness Neville-Jones said: “Cobham are well aware that their service is not the only way in which aerial surveillance can be provided.

“They do point out however, legitimately in my view, that if the intention is for the Border Force to rely from January solely on services that can be procured on an ad hoc basis under the MMO’s Framework Agreement, this is likely to lead to reliance on less capable aircraft with much less experienced and practised crews – if indeed there is any availability at all when needed.”

In a response Philip Duffy, Chief Operating Officer of the Border Force, said that the Government has to “ensure value for money”

He said: “As you are aware, there are other forms of aerial surveillance available across Government which will provide the required level of capability, and it is also incumbent upon Border Force to continue to explore new and emerging technologies available in the market place.”

Frank Hurst, a former head of maritime operations at HM Customs and Excise, said that the decision to end the air surveillance contract was “short sighted”.

He said that the surveillance has been in use for more than 20 years and had proved “extremely helpful” in spotting vessels….

It seems Home Office needs the money to check ROBERT SPENCER . He is the one who is a threat to UK.

Carmel been fitted up for your burqa or hijab yet because you will soon may have to wear one when you go out and leave the house

Hope your not too fond of a drink at your local because that could become a thing of the past or your weekend sleep in, as you could find yourself being woken each morning just before sunrise by ‘call to prayers’

Carmel I trust you or none of your friends are gay because that could have rather nasty consequences going forward and the same could apply to any of your straight female friends who happened to have a relationship outside of marriage, while I hope you all enjoy being constantly pregnant from 15 to 50. And do enjoy celebrating Christmas with your family and friends while you still can as you might find Ramadan to be not quite so much fun.

It sounds like you are just really going to love life under Sharia

Pro internet tip: When using sarcasm, always indicate that it’s sarcasm, no matter how obvious. People can’t hear your sarcastic tone when it’s in text format.

I disagree. “Carmel’s” comment had sarcasm written all over it. But there are some people who have some disability and fail to see it (sarcasm, that is, for those who need a detailed explanation).

I guess governmental penny-pinchers CAN put a price on security…

If Brits want to save money, they should cut down on welfare to Muslim parasites.
Even though polygamy is illegal in UK, the British government doles out welfare to polygamous Muslims.
Polygamy of course implies stubborn refusal of Muslims to integrate… the very situation that breeds Jihadists and terrorists. In essence British government pays Muslims to breed terrorists.

Indeed. But law enforcement won’t riot in the streets, so governmental busybodies go through the path of least resistance.

We had brave and decent leaders in those days ( Churchill) but Cameron, Blair, Brown et al are in a very different league; stupid, thick, full of self aggrandisment, surrounded by sycophants, shielded from real life and never having had a proper job in the real world. No wonder we are in a mess.

  6. Ric says

May has been incompetent, utterly disastrous as Home Secretary. Not to say that if she were replaced her successor would be equally inept. It doesn’t matter who is at the helm of the UK government… they are equally inept and live in a proverbial bubble of denial. It is the non-Muslim folks who are paying the freight, it is they whom are up and must deal with illegal-immigrants becoming a stain on this once great Union. Anti-Semitism is rife, as is anti-Christianity, now, deemed worthy of being demonized; not, however, Islam.

The nutters, the overlords of both the UK and EU have brought this upon themselves; however, it’s their citizens that will reap what their spineless, politically-correct leadership has sown.

  9. Ghost Writer says

Is Ms. May saying that Britain cannot afford 4million pounds? That would be a truly ridiculous statement. But I cannot see that she said that was the reason for ending the procedure. So, it is not clear why she is ending the procedure. But I suspect a sinister agenda.

I used to know two women long ago who would go into Moss Side UK at night, specifically to get raped. They would return blissed out, and full of love and sympathy for the rapists. Maybe that’s her fantasy, but her society position won’t allow it. I’m not female, i can’t suss that. I’m just trying to find a reason why she does what she does.

No refugees where T May lives, imagine that.

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/may/27/scotland-welcomes-third-of-uk-syrian-refugees-resettlement

“But no refugees were accepted in the six-month period by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, in which the constituency of the home secretary, Theresa May, is located, or by Watford borough council, home to the constituency of the Home Office minister responsible for resettling refugees, Richard Harrington.”
