Wegmans bakery refuses to make cake for Ex-Muslims of North America, saying it might offend Muslims

Jun 29, 2016 10:40 am By Robert Spencer

UPDATE: Wegmans relented under pressure.

—–

Muslims didn’t even complain. Wegmans was just afraid that they might: “The associate further added that – the store had Muslim workers, ‘my employees may not know what this stands for, Ex-Muslims of North America, and I don’t have enough time and people to educate them on what it is,’ and although they were not sure if the employees would be offended, they ‘can’t put them in that situation.'”

Of course, Wegmans. To put them in the situation of getting offended would be absolutely intolerable. No one should ever have to live with the fact that somewhere else, some people who believe differently are enjoying a cake. Cakes should always be denied to anyone who might somehow be offending Muslims. To allow such people to enjoy cake could turn out to be a mistake of explosive proportions.

So now Christians are forced to bake gay wedding cakes, but “Islamophobic” cakes? Everyone agrees they’re beyond the pale.

muhammad_syed

“Apostates refused service at Wegmans bakery – fear of invoking offense led to discrimination, says Ex-Muslims of North America,” Ex-Muslims of North America, June 20, 2016:

Wegmans, a chain of 89 grocery stores, refused to bake and decorate a cake for a private celebration for those who have left the faith of Islam.

The request included a picture of the Ex-Muslims of North America (EXMNA) name and logo, with a caption of “Congratulations on 3 years!”, but was refused by an associate from the Fairfax branch of the popular chain, stating that the request was “offensive”.

EXMNA representatives called Wegmans bakery to clarify, and were refused again, with no explanation on why the logo, name, and caption was considered offensive.

After conferring with management, the Wegman’s employee stated that her boss(es) would not change their stance on the issue. The associate further added that – the store had Muslim workers, “my employees may not know what this stands for, Ex-Muslims of North America, and I don’t have enough time and people to educate them on what it is,” and although they were not sure if the employees would be offended, they “can’t put them in that situation”.

“I’m shocked by the denial,” said Muhammad Syed, the president of EXMNA. “There is nothing about our name or logo that can be considered offensive to any reasonable individual. There are some, however, who take our very existence as an affront to their faith, and to them I have only this to say: We have every right to exist and be proud of who we are, and we won’t back down.”

EXMNA representatives reached out to the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), a nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the constitutional separation of state and church, who agreed that the actions of Wegmans employees were unlawful and discriminatory. “Refusing to provide services to a group on the basis of their religion or lack of a religion is a clear violation of federal, state, and local civil rights laws—one we hope the company will move quickly to correct,” said FFRF constitutional attorney Andrew L. Seidel.
On behalf of EXMNA, FFRF is asking Wegmans to fulfill the original order without charge and educate its employees on their duty to serve patrons without discrimination.

“Ex-Muslims around the world are persecuted and threatened, even by their own family and friends,” Syed continued. “We assumed that here, in the United States, we could go about our business without disruption. Unfortunately, even respectable businesses would rather turn away a persecuted group than risk offence.”

Fear of poisoning to “please Allah” would be a serious concern of mine, were I from EXMNA.

      That’s what I was thinking.

Personally, I don’t want anyone baking me a cake who doesn’t want to do it.

Yeah and the “pie” in the movie “The Help” comes to mind. If you’ve seen the movie you know what I’m talking about…. Never the less these Ex Muslims deserve better and Wegmans might consider this……..They might just loose a lot of good customers because of this if they still refused to bake the cake.

    • Nigel GFF says

Is it possible that the employees have no concerns about the ‘halal’ status of Wegman’s cakes (ingredients). All those creams, gels, binders and emulsifiers etc. could well have a porcine whiff.
I’ve heard that the only part of a pig not used is it’s squeak – sound effects technicians might disagree.

      • Nigel GFF says

        Jun 29, 2016 at 6:30 pm

Have just read the ‘update’. The Wegmans spokesperson said, among other things ….

“We should have made the cake. The decision to not fill this cake order was made at the store level by a well-intentioned employee, who was trying to act in the best interest of a diverse employee population.”

This ‘well-intentioned employee’ is a sad example of a knee-jerk defensive response, which reflects our elites attitude of ‘defend islam’ to the detriment of ALL. The assumed sensibilities of a ‘diverse population’ trumps everything, including business (selling our products!). This ‘well-intentioned’ discrimination is a blind spot even the bosses and their lackeys can’t penetrate.

        • Jinger says

          Jul 3, 2016 at 1:35 pm

So they couldn’t give the task to another employee would it wouldn’t “offend”?

Although if it were me I wouldn’t want to but a cake from there, there’s no telling what some will do to the cake or your personal information.

I wouldn’t eat any food prepared by muslims. Google “muslim bakery feces” without the quotes. Contaminating food is one increasingly common tactic of jihad.

      • Lioness says

        Jun 30, 2016 at 12:59 pm

I wouldn’t either, DJM. When I see muzzies in food prep I walk away. However my fear is that they are behind the scence in bakeries, in food plants, in produce fields… I am sure they gladly will contaminate food for infidel consumption when the opportunity is there.

        • MS Case says

          Jun 30, 2016 at 10:51 pm

Contaminating food night be a minor thing…Just think of the real sensitive areas they work in. Government especially.

Let’s just call that “risk management” since Wegman’s doesn’t want to be culpable for the murder of those apostates per Sharia law. I wonder if Wegman’s makes cakes for homosexual unions since that would ALSO offend Muslims (forgetabout offending Christians…they don’t count since they don’t react violently.)

Does Wegman’s do First Communion, Baptism, Confirmation, Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitsvah cakes? I am sure that those offend muslims. Maybe they just get out of the business of baking cakes then they do not have to make decisions. Life is so much easier that way.

    • Norger says

      True that.

  8. Angemon says

Good thing they refused to bake the cake then – no chances of EMNA members mysteriously being infected with e.coli or something like that.

Oh, and they should sue for discrimination as if that was a Christian bakery refusing to cater to a gay wedding. Laws are for all, not some – is that the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave or a land ruled by a “party of crooks and thieves”?

    Boycott Wegman’s.

I understand the owners are afraid; they are afraid of terrorists hitting them for serving ex-Muslims; perhaps they are afraid of getting caught up in leftist charges of bigotry somehow, by daring to serve a public organization of avowed ex-Muslims; and Wegman’s may have read the news stories about feces getting sprinkled onto chocolate cakes in certain Muslim shops, and so on, and what happened with that.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-513621/Shop-owners-sold-chocolate-cake-sprinkled-human-faeces.html

Since Wegman’s has Muslim employees, the ex-Muslims group, if they ever get the cake, would do better to have it tested for, uh, shall we say, “impurities,” than eat it. Orthodox Muslims hate ex-Muslims and want to kill them or want to see them killed.

  11. mortimer says

Those living near a Wegman’s store must immediately organize a picket. Everyone who uses Wegman’s must immediately notify the store they will not use it until they reverse their policy.

Boycott them as long as they discriminate on the basis of freedom of conscience.

  14. TheBuffster says

    Jun 29, 2016 at 1:02 pm

If you hire Muslims to bake cakes, then you do not serve your customers best interests by asking those employees to bake cakes for ex-Muslims or for Jews.

But if the bakery refuses to hire Muslims, they can get in trouble for discrimination.

Business people should be free to set their own policies according to their own values, reasoning, and judgment. They should be free to hire, to serve or not to serve, and to choose *what* they will and will not serve, and let the market decide whether they flourish or go out of business.

Isn’t it obvious why the EXMNA logo is offensive? Just take a look at it:

This is a double-bladed Bat’leth, a vicious Klingon fighting weapon:
    http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Bat%27leth
This is a crescent-shaped, two-ended scimitar made of razor-sharp composite baakonite. Such images on cakes will encourage small children to play Klingon fighting games, lopping off each other’s ears and limbs.

By the way, after bad publicity they did finally make the cake.
