Munich Shooting Exposes Media Double Standard

Jul 23, 2016 3:48 pm By A. J. Caschetta

Munichshooting

Another shooting in Europe yesterday, this time in Germany, shocked the media into action. When news broke of an active shooter who began killing people in front of a McDonalds and then moved inside to the Olympia Shopping Center in Munich, it looked like another ISIS attack. But something was different this time.

Eyewitness reports began trickling in indicating that the shooter was heard complaining about refugees, so the media shifted gear, dropping the usual journalistic reticence when it comes to discussing a killer’s motives. Many seemed certain that this killer was finally part of the always-expected, but never-quite-materializing, backlash against Muslims.

The same tendency was evident across the political spectrum on cable news networks.

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith told his audience that social media was filled with reports of the shooter shouting “I am a German” and “[expletive] the foreigners.” After mentioning how unreliable social media can be, he repeated twitter posts about the shooter wearing “distinctive clothing,” indicative of right-wing, neo-Nazi types. In this case, it was the shooter’s boots. Compare this boldness to Smith’s past reluctance to mention on air the names of killers “with Muslim names” lest his audience jump to conclusions about their motives.

On CNN, Wolf Blitzer was confident enough to call the ongoing attack a “terrorist situation.” He noted that “millions of refugees…causing a huge political issue” were “destabilizing German society” and suggested that a “right-wing” anti-refugee event was underway. His guest, Massachusetts congressman Adam Schiff (D), concurred that it was likely a right-wing attack.

Over at MSNBC, Chuck Todd wanted to talk about “the big picture” which led him to “the refugee crisis” causing “anxiety and upheaval,” and to a German society “angry at Muslim presence.” Todd went so far as to “draw a straight line from Syrian refugees, to Brexit, to anxiety, to anger.” He hypothesized how the identity of the shooter might impact Angela Merkel’s future: a Muslim shooter would be detrimental, but a right-wing shooter could be shrugged off, perhaps even advantageous to her image.

With each passing moment as anchors, experts and guests awaited the German authorities to begin their press conference, things got even stranger.

At MSNBC, Chris Matthews filled air time by surmising that Munich was in the midst of a “Nativist Attack.” Cal Perry, MSNBC’s terrorism expert, bested him by labeling it a “Xenophobic Attack.” Perry expressed relief that the attack “doesn’t bear any of the similarities of ISIS attacks,” and pointed out that it was occurring on the “fifth anniversary of the Anders Breivik attack.”

Meanwhile back at CNN, Erin Burnett’s guest, retired Colonel Cedric Leighton, cited a report that the shooter had what sounded like a “southern German accent” and concluded that he was therefore not a refugee. “It’s very clear to me,” Leighton announced confidently, that the shooter “is not someone affiliated with ISIS.”

Juxtaposed with the trepidation and caution on display during the far more common instances of jihadist violence, this eagerness to cover right-wing terrorism betrayed a double standard that would have been hard to miss.

It brought to mind the early coverage of the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado. When reports came out that the killer was named James Holmes, ABC’s Brian Ross eagerly reported on air that a “Jim Holmes” of Aurora had recently joined the Tea Party in Colorado.

Rather than being fearful of saying the wrong thing, or concluding too quickly the significance of early reports, much of the media, especially the left, salivates over the prospect of right wing terrorism (real or imagined). It is the raison d’etre of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Many journalists still refuse to recognize the tell-tale signs of jihad terror, even subtle ones like when a killer declares his allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to a 9-1-1 operator or engages in ritual beheading. But a surprising number of journalists had no problem concluding that a German shooter who curses foreigners must be a right-winger.

Also notable in the early coverage of the Munich shootings is what was not said. There was no apparent compulsion to calm audiences by asking that they rationally examine the statistics – after all, aren’t 99% of all jack-booted Germans who shout at foreigners really just peaceful, law abiding citizens?

When the German authorities finally told the world that the shooter was an 18-year old German Iranian from Munich, the mood changed quickly. And when it was revealed that this killer too had shouted “Allahu akbar” (the jihad battle cry), it was all too much.

So back they went to discussing Hillary Clinton’s Vice Presidential pick and analyzing the Republican convention speeches. False alarm.

It seems that the Iranian may have vented his anger at Turkish and therefore Sunni Muslims who were his classmates. This is also very serious as it is playing out the Sunni Shiite conflict which has been going on from the first decades of Islam. It is bieng transferred to Europe thanks to the mad immigration policies of the German and UE elites.Nobody has come up with the explanation for how he got the gun and the ammo.

A bit of common sense for journalists to apply:

Neither Christians nor Jews nor Hindus nor Nazis shout “Allahu akbar” (the jihad battle cry).

Who would be most likely to shout “Allahu akbar” (the jihad battle cry)?

As you name the Jews: German leftist magazine Spiegel Online always gives the name of the gunman as “David S.” Maybe they want us to think he’s Jewish. (The full name of course is Ali David Sonboly) and clearly a Muslim name.

No other religion offers forgiveness of sins and paradise (Jannah) for killing people. It completely bypasses repentence and restitution to those a jihadist has previously damaged. How can Allah be just if he passes out paradise without any requirement for repentence or restitution?

Apparently, if Allah gets what he wants, the jihadist goes to paradise and those sinned against can go to Hell!

Always note how Nazi references by the left frequently declare that this or that Nazi or Nazi-type group is “right wing.” Since Nazism is shorthand for National Socialism, and Nazis were all about using the State to subjugate and control the people, if the “wing” reference is to be accurately used, it should be “left wing” Nazi or neo-Nazi group. Sadly, too many on the right let this slander almost always go without challenge, and it helps the left smear the right in the process.

His first name is Ali. Many or the majority of people in Iran are not at all interested in Islam, so the fact that he could be called David, would not be any problem. It seems that it wouldn’t that difficult to destabilize the Ayatollah regime in Iran as almost the totality of youth there are fed up of Islam and the mullahs. They almost ousted the Ayatollahs some years back. If here had been a decent President in the U.S. and not Obama, maybe the Ayatollahs would not be governing Iran at present.

Watching from the UK, these twists and turns and changes to the narrative were very striking.

The weirdest bit was ‘bama’s statement that went something like ‘we don’t know what is happening in Munich ‘, which kept running in the breaking news banner, on a couple of channels.

I’m tiring of all this crapspeak, and so must most of the population be too.

It’s also noteworthy that we never get interviews political dissidents, while the incidents are still hot.

They get quotes from ‘bama and May and any number of weird and wooly pundits, but never Marine la Pen, Gert Wilders or Frauke Petry in Germany.

Of course we know why, but it’s really piss-poor journalism.

Suppose these ‘populists’ made a big mistake and said something hateful, like we’re always told they do? That would be news and vindication of the media stance, but MSN won’t take that chance, because they suspect that these are honest and sincere people, who will probably say what we’re all thinking, so they are never consulted until the fuss has subsided and the public are trying hard to forget what is happening.

If all the media can produce is an endless array of commentators who don’t know what is occurring and why, then what is the point of them continuing? Just report events and move on.

Now he paid back by shooting them, or maybe revenged on innocent Turk youths. And the PK-media tried to make big politricks or Nazi terrorism of it. Shame on them. Shame on schools which cannot protect their students against criminal students at the same school. Excerpt:

Lauretta said she heard the gunman say, “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is great” in Arabic. “I know this because I’m Muslim. I hear this and I only cry.”

          You wrote:

          Jul 23, 2016 at 8:45 pm

What countless sources, Champ? I see only CNN and then a bunch (not many) other media repeating what CNN reported.

I want to see “Loretta” on TV so that I can get a first impression of how trustworthy she looks. I want her to repeat on air what she said to the CNN reporter.

This will FORCE the majority of the media (which have been ignoring “allahu ackbar”) to investigate. Then, we might learn something.

Remember, the CNN journo got “Loretta” on the phone by telephoning stores in the immediate vicinity of the McDonalds. In one of them, “Loretta” claimed to be a witness to the shooting in McDonalds.

As you know, not all witnesses are accurate or truthful. Some “witnesses” later turn out to be LIARS. I don’t know which category “Loretta” belongs to. If I never hear from her again, I will have to file this under “not proven”.

I don’t know why I talked to you Champ. Obviously you are an idiot and I’ve wasted my time.

ALL the information except for ONE item points to shooter being Columbine/Sandy Hook-style revenge mass murderer.

          — Been bullied all through school, it’s well known that the worst bullies in German schools are Sunni Muslims, he is Iranian (probably atheist).

          — On at least two occasions, bullying got so bad that he filed police complaints for robbery and assault.

          — Typical loner profile, no friends.

          — Obsessively researched mass murderers, as evidenced by books found in his room

          — Did not look neighbors in the eye or greet them

          — Selectively targeted victims resembling the bullies who made his life in school unbearable

          — Never been religious

          — Shouting about his grievances from deck of parking garage, nothing to indicate he had jihad motive

As opposed to that there is only ONE item of information pointing in a different direction, namely that he allegedly shouted “allahu ackbar” in McDonalds. All we have is the voice of a pseudonymous female on CNN and NO corroboration. This female has apparently disappeared from the face of the earth, and NONE of the survivors known to have been in McDonalds have confirmed.

And does “Sam” consider Robert Spencer to be an “idiot” as well? Robert considers CNN to be a reliable news source:

Well–this dismissive remark does not square with anything that “Sam” has written pertaining to whether or not CNN is a reliable news agency.

He claims that I am “idiot” for considering CNN to be a reliable news source, but Robert is simply “infallible” for using CNN? To say that “Sam” is illogical and inconsistent is an understatement.

And I don’t need to resort to name calling and insults to prove that “Sam” is off-base and crude, his own words have demonstrated that.

Angemon, did you miss how I also referenced the Sandy Hook killer in Connecticut?

The small children whom he murdered in the school had never done him any harm. Yet they fit a pattern in his imagined grievances.

Munich killer posted a fake Facebook entry under a female Turkish Muslim name, hoping to attract youngsters that fit his “enemy pattern”.

At some point in the future, if and when solid information substantiating “allahu ackbar” comes in, I will concede that you are right and I am wrong. As of now, though, I feel good to be very skeptical of a “jihad angle”.

    • Custos Custodum says

      Jul 24, 2016 at 7:12 am

Here are details from the account in the UK Daily Telegraph, presumably based on German media sources:

Using the name “Selina Akim”, Sonboly posted a message hours before the attack saying: “Come today at four o’clock to McDonald’s at OEZ [shopping centre]. I am giving away anything you want as long as it’s not too expensive.”

      …

Among those he murdered were a group of four children – aged 14 and 15 – who were mown down at the table where they were eating.

The teenage friends comprised two boys of Turkish origin and two girls from Kosovan families, bolstering the theory that Sonboly chose his victims as he rampaged through McDonald’s and into a busy shopping centre. In all, seven of his victims were teenagers and the oldest was a 45-year-old mother of two of Turkish descent.

      …
Four of the teenagers, all friends, killed by Sonboly were named last night as Can Leyla, 14, and his friend Selcuk Kilic, 15, both of Turkish origin, and two girls: Sabina Sulaj and Armela Segashi, both 14. A fifth member of the group was critically injured.

Dilan Demir described the scene on Facebook: “I was close to the scene and was hiding with a friend. When it was very quiet we got up and saw five people. They looked dead, one of them was him [Selcuk]. He lay with his head on the table. His two other friends, and two girls, lay on the floor.”

This seems to suggest that the shooter created a fake Facebook account specifically to lure Turks and/or other Muslims to the McDonalds, and then committed the murders.

It does seem rather suspicious – as others point out above – that the alleged shout of “Allah Akbar” was not witnessed by anyone but – of all things – a Muslima. (Of course, this could be attributable to the usual media censorship.)

If the version above is correct, then the Islam-compliant media are now in a bind: if they stick to their denial of any connection to Islam without presenting a consistent account of what happened, people will conclude that this is yet another Islamic atrocity being covered up.

On the other hand, if they go with the story of years of bullying leading up to this act, the better-trained media users will put two and two together and conclude that bullying BY MUSLIMS is the most likely explanation.

      • Sam Hawkins says

        Jul 24, 2016 at 9:47 am

bullying BY MUSLIMS is the most likely explanation

The evidence for that explanation is already overwhelming and more keeps pouring in. (Note, I in no way condone what he did. The answer to being bullied is NOT murder.)

        Latest from the DM:

tend to mostly agree this is not one of the regular jihadi attacks, I’ve known quite a few iranians, they are fixated with their Aryan heritage, they have their own supremacy thing going within islam, they just don’t do “allah uakbar”, we know he’s a shia from the name Ali, only shia use that name.

No one seems to have considered that one of the victims could have shouted “allah uakbar” thinking this was an IS attack and it would save their own skin.

Spencer seems to have been blogging this one with an open mind, the purpose of this post (which is not Spencer’s) was to identify reporting double standards. The lying media has been complicating the real war, their misdirection and willingness to perpetuate the victim status of muslims has always been treasonous. They can’t be trusted.

So you think you can push me around
And make me run, well, I’m gonna tell you now

I’m gonna get me a gun
I’m gonna get me a gun
And all those people who put me down
You better get ready to run

Must have been the Munich shooter’s favourite song.

On the issue of “get me a gun” how did an 18 year old kid in Germany get a Glock 17 and 300 rounds of ammo(as reported)?

      Thanks for digging these out.

What’s really disturbing is that he wrote this long before converting to what he ‘believed’ was a peaceful religion, or did he?

Somewhere in the back of his mind he . must have known what was to come, and what he was getting into.

This is especially likely as his father was Greek Cypriot, so someone in the family must have told stories about the Turks and islam, during his childhood..

Hence the murderous song and his later conversion.

Like you say, it could’ve been written by, or for, that kid in McDonalds.

And why has the song been pulled here in UK? Stevens has been active in ‘charitable’ work and also funded a mosk which had a scandal attached, as I recall, but can’t find confirmation for now.

So, it seems that Cat has abrogated or hidden his violent verses to appear sweet to unsuspecting eyes.

      Nothing to do with jihad.

      Move along please.

I believe he is not your typical jihadi. Why:

He spoke very calmly, no trace of a regional accent, educated German, hated Turks.

He used allahu akhbar to do damage to those who bullied him.

He is not from a typical Muslim family, if all. I do not know any Iranian in Germany who is. None.

So he is not a jihadi but was bullied by Muslims. He is a poster boy for our campaign against the islamic invasion, though

Because, we’ve been saying that islam is a political ideology and a societal infringement and bears all the hallmarks of a contagion.

Whether this kid was muslim or not is almost irrelevant, his family came from an islamic state, so we are not in any way surprised by his MO.

As is consistently pointed out here – it’s the ideology that counts.

If you look closely at documented Islamic atrocities, you will note that there are very few examples of Shiites committing suicide bombings.

Related to this, Persions/Iranians seem noticeably loath to sacrifice themselves for the sake of religion. On the other hand, they are happy to assist Arabs to blow themselves up.

Some years ago, there were news reports that Iranians had set up as middlemen charging young Saudi men several thousand dollars a head for the chance to blow themselves up fighting Americans in Iraq. The anti-U.S. terror groups (predecessors of Islamic State) presumably also paid for the supply of Saudi-educated (i.e. stupid and fanatical) suicide bombers.

News entertainers bend over backwards to make it not a Moslem if at all possible. If that fails, then the operating assumption is that it was an insane one. This is to prop up the central assumption that Islam itself is not violent or expansionist, that it’s a simple and peaceful religion somehow especially prone to being badly misunderstood by its practitioners. When fools like Shepard Smith and Wolf Blitzer are pushed to the wall, then they trot out the fact that Moslems kill Moslems, as if that eliminates Islam as an explanation. Denial of reality is of necessity slippery as an eel.
