Good to see that even under the disastrous Angela Merkel, Germany has some standards. The neo-Ottoman caliph and dismantler of Turkish secularism was too much even for the Germans.
“Turkish president’s plane trying to land in Germany: Request denied!,” eTN Global Travel Industry News, July 15, 2016 (thanks to Paul):
According to unconfirmed MSNBC reports, Turkish President M Erdogan is seeking asylum in Germany. His plane is requesting landing rights.
According to other unconfirmed sources, Germany denied the request to land in the Federal Republic of Germany. The report continues, he is now asking Dutch authorities to land.
A senior US military source (unconfirmed) told NBC News that Erdogan, refused landing rights in Istanbul, is reported to be seeking asylum in Germany.

“and that Truth is US collaborated with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and many other jihadist groups to overthrow the legitimate government of Syria.”
Citation needed. Obama made a big deal about a line in the sand that had exactly zero consequences. Oh, and you might want to ask the people on the ground instead of copy/pasting what you’re told to copy/paste: the former president of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces – you know, the people who wanted Assad gone to begin with – recently gave an interview in which he harshly attacked the international community – and particularly the U.S. – and accused them of never desiring a regime change in Syria and therefore not taking a decisive stand against Assad despite his many crimes, nor did they significantly support the Syrian opposition.
“Question:
Why is US breaking international laws by keeping 250 of its soldiers illegally inside Syria???”

The Turkish military will not transform Turkey into another Islamic paradise. The reason they revolted against Erdogan is that they represent the modern, educated part of Turkey and are fiercely opposed to Erdogan’s attempts to recreate an Ottoman caliphate.
That’s the problem with democracy – it’s a numbers game. All through the 60s, the 70s and 80s, educated Turks in the cities limited their families to 2 or 3, as in the rest of Europe, while in the villages of Anatolia, where the mullahs still had a lot of influence, the population exploded. Now all those babies have grown up and vote, and elected a fundamentalist Moslem.

Here are some questions I’d like answered:
(1) Was the coup launched by what is left of the “old guard” in the Turkish military in an attempt to guard what is left of the Kemalist legacy?
(2) Could this be the “new guard” put in by Erdogan himself showing its disgust at Erdogan’s failure to move quickly enough to re-Islamicize the Turkish state?
The latter is a real possibility.

Excellent point Kepha, last thing I read is the Erdogan had essentially purged the entire power structure (judges etc.) and replaced with Islamists.

What I feel is a real risk here is that the Islamists will begin bombings and terrorist attacks against the secularists. Turkey still has a significant number of fundamentalist Muslimes in the countryside. They can cut off supply lines to Ankara.

Champ, traditionally the military in Turkey has been generally more secular.

Indeed, gravenimage. Years ago I attended a lecture in Philadelphia given by Daniel Pipes. As a way of indicating just how secular the Turkish military has traditionally been because of what Ataturk instituted, he provided the example that if a Turkish officer’s brother made the pilgrimage to Mecca, that officer would be dismissed from the service. Not the officer himself mind you going to Mecca, just his brother. Sadly, those days are over it seems and this may have been the last gasp of a Turkish military that is not what it used to be.

to Champ, who wants to understand whom Erdogun is accusing of being the ringleader..
Here’s my take: Erdogun is as of today holding our air force base hostage, preventing all comings and going or use of airspaces, and demanding the return of his arch enemy, Fethullah Gulen, who currently enjoys sanctuary in the USA. Gulen is the exiled head of the secularists.
Doubt the MSM will get around to calling extortion and hostage holding by their names, but I believe this is what is happening.Obama will probably give up Gulen (champion of secular govt) in a NY nanosecond for a couple of reasons.
First, Obama’s consistent and strong support for anything promotional of Islam and the Muslim Brotherhood, and second, he doesn’t want his “legacy” to be all messed up with a lengthy scandal like the hostage situation in Iran that was the crowning jewel of Carter’s presidency.
Cheers!

Right now Erdoğan is proud of what he pulled with this coup but I think before long he will regret it. Erdoğan has been backed 100% by the U.S. when he should have been put on the terrorist list and now he wants to accuse America of supporting his phony coup.
When earlier today we reported that Turkey has closed the airspace above, and suspended all US-led air missions out of the giant Incirlik airbase (which houses some 50 US nuclear bombs), we said that there is speculation the “airbase may be held “hostage” by Ankara as a bargaining chip ahead of demands for the extradition of Erdogan’s arch enemy, Fethullah Gulen, currently a resident of the state of Pennsylvania.” A few hours later this was partially validated when during a televised speech, Turkish President Erdogan called on the United States to extradite Fethullah Gulen, a US-based Muslim cleric he accuses of being behind Turkey’s failed coup attempt.
